Our small group consisted of one experienced rider, one rider with some experience, and two novice riders. The girls who led the ride were both amazing and were eager to talk about the history of the island and our horses, which were all rescues, save one. They shared stories of how the horses got their names, as well as how they'd survived on the island with no power for almost a year after a hurricane destroyed the island's infrastructure. Our ride took us through the old sugar plantations and onto the beach before taking us into the water. Before entering the water, we were warned about the behaviors to watch for in our horses that would indicate the horse was about to lay down in the water, as they like to do sometimes and what to do if the horse did lay down. My horse, Alien, apparently loves the water so much that he moans the entire time, and he loves swimming! This was not your typical cruise ship excursion where you walk your horse in the shallow water. We were in about 5' of water, and it was AWESOME!!! I felt like I could have stayed and ridden horses on the beach and in the water all day, and yes, Alien made his "ohhhh this feels so good" noises the entire time we were in the water. My shorts were completely soaked, but I expected that and I wasn't bothered by it! The warm sun meant they dried quickly. I rode barefoot because I was wearing flip flops, and I didn't want to risk losing them on the ride. It was my choice, but I recommend if you're not comfortable with riding barefoot, wear something like water shoes, old sneakers, or Crocs. We rode our horses into the ocean, and for those who wanted to, we even got to stand on the horses and dive into the water--such a unique and exhilarating experience! Along the trail, they pointed out interesting local plants and flowers and shared fascinating information about them, which made the ride even more enjoyable. What really set this experience apart was the people. Steve, Jeremiah, and Emily were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. It was obvious that Cowboy Steve isn't just running a business--he truly enjoys meeting people, teaching them about horses, helping them feel confident in the saddle, and sharing an experience that they'll never forget. We arrived early and hung out until Dana was ready, then got to meet the animals. A baby donkey! A mama donkey! Chickens! Horses! Sheep! Goats! Cats! Dog! Recommend long pants, sneakers, and long sleeves if you have them as there are some thorn bushes along the way. Dana taught us how to guide the horses (different from other styles I've used before, but easy once I understood.) She had us lead the horses out to the start of the trail and we used a mounting block to get onto the horses. She adjusted the stirrups and we were off. We followed a dirt trail that at times was paved, along the side of a hill with amazing views of the bays. We also went by the Fortsberg ruins (but didn't travel up into the ruins themselves. Definitely worth the drive across the island if you're staying in Cruz Bay to enjoy a slightly quieter side and a different perspective!

My 10-year-old daughter was really nervous at first, but Joshua stayed right by her side, encouraging her with so much kindness. By the end, she said it was her favorite experience on the island! Even my teenage son--who I wasn't sure would enjoy it--had the biggest smile on his face the whole time and said he loved it!! That alone says everything! I highly recommend you bring a fanny pack for your camera and wallet, although, Nick took care of holding my loose items and made sure my purse was safe and secure. Also stay tuned because they have some wonderful features developing for a couple's ride. Nick gave me all the confidence in the world, that's how I got to stand on top of a horse. Nick and Folksy were very friendly and knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the island. The horses were well-trained and clearly well taken care of, although my wife had a bit of a battle of wills with hers! Nick showed her how to properly control the horse, making it a funny memory rather than anything that took away from the experience. The tour largely takes place on the horse preserve/sanctuary that Nick runs, so it was really cool to see the different horses and learn about their lineage. Hopefully you'll get lucky and meet Monster, who is a beautiful horse despite the name. I can't recommend this tour enough, we're looking forward to doing it again someday. But just remember to wear sunscreen- it's a rainforest tour but the best (breathtaking) views are at the top of the hill exposed to the sun. Dab on some sunscreen and you'll be glad you went.

It is now called Hacienda Buena Vista. It is located in the same place in Palmas del Mar. Just follow the signs to the Equestrian center. They now have a website (haciendabuenavista.com), as well as FB and IG pages. This makes it so much easier to reach them and get up to date info. Before it was a hassle. You can reserve a tour via phone or the website. Unfortunately, we didn't know this. I was used to the old ways of just showing up. We wanted a pony ride for our son. I'm sure they will take walk-ins if there's space available. Not this time. It was Sunday, which seems to be their busiest day. Plus they were short staffed. They told us they didn't have anybody available for another 40min. My wife didn't want to wait that long so we left. Next time. The guy suggested we reserve for Saturday which is less busy. I'll keep that in mind when making a reservation. In addition to horseback riding and pony rides, they also offer a stable tour and bike rides. They also breed and train horses. I believe they also giving riding lessons. Just ask.
