Riding in Esperanza was amazing! We faced some heavy rain on the day we initially booked for, but they were great about contacting us to reschedule. The views were gorgeous, and it was much easier to get to the Black Sand Beach on horseback than on foot. The guides were great and quick to help us with anything we needed. We have taken horse back riding tours in Puerto Rico many times before.. in Carolina, Isabella, but never in Vieques. However, this was my favorite tour! The views are absolutely unmatched in other locations. This tour gives you access to the beaches, the cliffs, and forrest areas. The guides were absolutely such gems, very kind, very knowledgeable about the area as well as the horses. I felt so comfortable on my horse the entire ride, they truly matched us all with great horses. The ride itself was really good, beautiful views and well looked after horses. However I was booked on a 2 hour private ride, we set off at 4.10pm and we got back at 5.25pm. A few groups rides went out at the same time as me, and by the time I left at 5.40pm they were still not back. My huspand actually booked this for me as a gift on our honemoon, and he came to collect me at 5.40pm as he wanted to get photos of me getting back, but obviously he couldn't. I messaged the company after to ask why it was so short, and they told me the guy taking me out asked me if I wanted to go to the mountains or the beach, and as I said the beach, that was a shorter ride. However he NEVER expressed this was the case. Just asked which one I wanted to go to, and presented it as an either/or option. I even asked him which was a nicer ride and what his preference would be and he just said they were both good. Really dissapointing and made a lovely gesture by my huspand a little bittersweet, as the private rides are very expensive, and I barely got half the time the company said we'd be riding for, so we didn't get what we paid for. read more

Absolutely first rate! We (one very experienced rider, one slightly experienced, and one absolute novice) had the most amazing ride with Elizabeth. The horses were well trained and also very well taken care of, and were a pleasure to ride. Elizabeth led a great tour- really informative and we also got to see parts of the island that we wouldn't have been able to access. Riding in the surf and on the black sand beach was a so much fun! Please be careful with this company, it's our nightmare in Vieques. They don't respect their customers and threaten us to delete bad reviews. When we arrived at the farm at 3:50 PM, we found that the check-in for the 4:00 tour had ended. However, they didn't allow us to ride the horses and didn't give us our money back. (This is about their policy ) and told us " when she said no, it's mean no, go back to your FK country." When I arguing with them, my camera dropped on the ground and they immediately took it away. Then they asked us to leave the private property (their farm) immediately. When we leave their boss text me: she took a selfie with my camera. She asked me and my bf to delete the negative reviews about them on google immediately. And she wanted me to go back to Black Sands (an undeveloped beach strewn with rocks) at night to get my camera. It's ridiculous that no one will be able to find anything on a beach without any lights. When we asked if we could go to the farm the next day to get my camera back, she mentioned that there was another negative review online. Obviously, the boss doesn't want any negative reviews online, we don't understand how she can be rude to customers. If you have any bad experiences and want to complain please be careful they are watching you. This is our nightmare in Vieques. read more

Beautiful!! I went with my bf to try out horseback riding for my birthday and it was such a pleasure! Esperanza riding company is the best one to choose and Dante (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was a superb instructor. He always asked if we were okay and gave us simple instructions for how to handle our horses. I rode on Freddy(horse in photo) and my bf rode on Dude (white with brown speckles). Dante brought my husband and myself out on a gorgeous ride, over hills, along a cliff overlooking the beautiful ocean, through woods and along two different beaches. I ride frequently but have never ridden a gaited horse (which I guess all island horses are). It was a blast! The horses are incredibly sure footed and responsive. Being a horse person, I took note that all of their hooves were in excellent shape, they were fit and well fed as well. It was a little confusing at first, driving up to see the closed gate, but we quickly discovered we could easily open it to pull in, keeping the horses in their proper places (out as well as in!) The staff is young and energetic and matched each of 4 people, including a 9 year old, in my family with exactly the right horse to enjoy the experience. The ride to and through El Playa de Coca and El Playa de Negra was exciting (even a little scary at times, with steep inclines and declines that the horses handled with ease!) and simply the most beautiful and fun experience. The young guides payed close attention to the horses and also watched my little one to ensure he was comfortable and safe. They stopped at a point on one of the beaches to line up the family for a well-taken photograph. This was my 20 year old's favorite experience of our week long vacation in Puerto Rico. The beach ride was a little shorter than I thought but the view was amazing! They also took pictures for everyone which is super nice! Long pants recommend and it will get wet! What a great experience! We did a private tour with Valerie and couldn't have asked for a better tour guide and host. Absolutely wonderful!

Overall tour is alright, beautiful views, but after we went past the ocean, my saddle started to slip to the right and eventually I fell on my back, and the guide Victoria saw me falling but did not come over right away (she just strolled over until I actually FELL, then ran a bit to help me up, which is really unacceptable and lacking on their part). She explained with "the saddle got wet in the water and loosened", but that just means it wasn't secured tightly in the first place, which is extremely dangerous imo. Luckily I wasn't hurt badly but it could've been much worse. Would not be going again. read more

We had such a wonderful ride with our tour guide Elizabeth. We called a day ahead of time and were able to book a tour over the phone. She has two rides available, one at 8 am and one 4 pm, you have to get there 30 or 45 mins early so keep that in mind when booking. She texted us directions and it was easy to find. You could book a group tour or a private ride. The group tour was $80 per person and the private was $110. We opted for a group tour and were thrilled to be the only ones on the tour! Elizabeth of course honored the $80 per person rate even though we got a private tour. You can tell she really cares about the horses she owns and all the other roaming ones in the island. She was very knowledgable and talking with her was like talking with an old friend. Our horses were calm and kind and very well behaved. The tour was a good 2 hours and the best way to see the island in my opinion. I can't say enough good things about Esperanza riding company. I know taxi horses is right across from the W, but trust me this place is worth the drive or taxi ride. read more

My daughter, 10 yr old granddaughter, and I booked the sunset ride with the Esperanza Riding Company. We took the ferry to Vieques and a taxi out to their facility. We were greeted warmly upon arrival (by both dog and humans:) and were given well fitting helmets (required for guests), and a place to safely store our stuff during our ride. The forms you fill out when you book had already given the staff ideas about level of experience with horses, your size and weight, so as to help determine a good equine/human match. Elizabeth did the best tutoring on the basics of, and safety in, horseback riding that my daughter and I had ever seen before a trail ride (they also called out gentle guidance during the ride if needed). My granddaughter was having second thoughts as we waited to ride and Chloe(?) came right over and talked her through her anxieties in a very sweet way. Once on the horse & with further encouragement before the start she was as happy to be on her horse as the rest of us. My daughter works in Equine medicine for the U of MN and always scrutinizes the condition and care of the horses on these trail rides. Her well trained eye found the horses to be very well cared for, content, and well trained. This is not always (or sadly, even sometimes) true on many trail rides. These horses are obviously well loved. Even the novice riders in our group enjoyed a great ride. The ride itself was incredibly beautiful, with views that couldn't be better, and a beach ride portion that added a spark of excitement to the trip. The timing for sunset made it magical.
