It seemed a lot bigger in the photos here on Yelp. It's a very tight space inside. Very little collection of small things like figures, cards, etc on display for sale. Most comics are in boxes, so hard to know what they have. Spent about 5 minutes inside and was never greeted by either of the employees even though I walked by both at least twice each. I'm sure it's probably great for the "regulars" but there are better options with larger facilities elsewhere in the L.A. area. read more

Am I a total nerd ? YES! Do I love comic books? Another YES! And that is why I keep coming back to this amazing local shop. They have such a large variety of comics and graphic novels here. The fun part is always digging through the boxes to find your prize. Staff here are super chill and extremely knowledgeable. I truly appreciate people who have a passion for this kind of thing. Every so often they do hold special events and signings. I have met Danzig a few times just being a patron shopping or for his Verotik signings (they carry his comics here). The store also has some rare comics in the back, collectibles, and stuff for the littles. Prices do vary as with any comic shop based off what you're looking for. read more

Golden Apple Comics is a must in Los Angeles as well as the world... Their extensive collection of comics, collectibles, graphic novels, trading cards, toys, replicas, memorabilia is one you'll truly appreciate and their service is beyond above. It's a very intimate store with quite a bit to take in from X-Men to Star Wars, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Cobra Kai. And everything is very reasonable in price, even autographed items and rare collectibles. You can even sell comics here and purchase protector sleeves for both cards and comics to keep them in better condition. I don't stop in too often, but when I do off the corner of La Brea/Melrose Avenue... Usually after a trip to Pink's Hot Dogs or Mr Charlie's for lunch (both within walking distance)... I make it count! Parking in the area is street galore, I sometimes take the metro over to save me the trouble - the 212 from Hollywood/Highland is a pretty safe bet. Service was okay. A regular came in and interrupted the person I was about to ask for help and I had to find what I was looking for myself. I didn't encounter any real "Comic Book Guy" from The Simpsons types. The selection is heavily slated toward trade paper backs, which I prefer. They had exactly what I was looking for. Zero Customer Service or Enthusiasm Stopped by Golden Apple Comics on Melrose and immediately felt unwelcome. No one greeted us or offered help the entire time we were in the store. The employees just stood behind the counter chatting loudly with each other and seemed irritated anytime a customer asked for assistance. One was glued to their phone while another reluctantly helped someone else. It's disappointing -- comic shops are supposed to feel fun and community-driven, but this one felt indifferent and cold. Every time I've been here recently the same guy has been hanging out next to the counter and angrily yelling. I don't know if he works there but it doesn't seem like he does. At least twice I've been in the middle of checking out or asking a question about something in stock and he just walks up and starts talking to the employee I'm talking to or slaps a comic down on the counter and starts yelling about it or the writer. I've gone on different days of the week and he seems to always be there. He creates a very unfriendly and annoying environment in a store where I used to enjoy browsing. Now if I have to go there I get in and get out, but luckily there are many other shops in the city to choose from. read more

Such a strange experience and incompetent staff lol. Came here with my family around 1:30 PM today. Everything was going normal just browsing around until there was a middle-aged black man who was in need of assistance. Mind you everyone is talking to each other. Every employee I saw was engaging in conversation with fellow coworkers or indeed helping other white customers. The black man asks the worker in the back area if he's busy since he is in need of assistance. The worker literally responds with "yea I'm really busy." Flat with no follow up. How embarrassing like seriously it was only until my mother turned to his direction and made eye contact that the man scrambles to find somebody else to assist the black customer. I ordered from this company and it took almost a week for them to process the order and have it shipped. Then, the delivery was sent to the wrong address by Fed Ex. I contacted Golden Apple and they told me I needed to talk to Fed Ex about the situation. I talked to Fed Ex and they told Golden Apple sent the order, they are the ones who need to contact them about the situation. It seems Golden Apple does not know how their business works. When I spoke to a woman at Golden Apple, who decided to remain nameless and who hung up the phone on me when asked to speak to a manager, she told me that I need to contact their warehouse (one that does not have a phone number) via email and they are the ones who take care of their orders. She told me the warehouse does not have a phone number. They just use a messaging system to contact them. The pause in her response made me feel as though she was lying. Her hanging up the phone on me after refusing to state who I was speaking to and saying that was not important proves that business isn't worth dealing with anymore. Rude customer service is what is expected from people like her. They have my money, but I still don't have what I ordered, but the person I spoke to couldn't care less. I've read other reviews of people not getting their orders in a timely manner and the woman I spoke to admitted they have gotten calls about merchandise not being delivered properly. They need to fix their faulty system and they better have either my money or my order returned next week. This IS important! read more

Very hard to place orders, questionable shipping policies and charges, very rude employees. there are thousands of other comic book shops to order from that are much easier/nicer. Uses Shop Pay so.... thats the main problem. Upon ordering Shop Pay's own payment system was down AND wouldnt except paypal. Upon calling the store, the csr was rude and cussed on the phone.. not a good place to do business with. This has been my comic book store for years, and I recommend it to anyone who appreciates art and pop culture. The staff are universally friendly and knowledgeable, and the inventory is well-curated. There are routinely interesting signing events and whatnot, but I really try to avoid those since it's such a small space and I want to shop and mind my own business. Parking in the lot next door is usually pretty easy. Overall, highly recommend. read more

I moved here about six months ago and even though there are many comic stores close by, I wouldn't dream of shopping anywhere other than Golden Apple. They're communicative with their customers and always respond to emails about editing the pull-list. They have an amazing selection and are extremely knowledgeable and always ready with a recommendation no matter what kind of comics you're in to. They host amazing events at the store, and the atmosphere is nothing short of fantastic. They also learn the names of their regulars which is nice. I have been going to comic bookstores since 1985 when I picked up my first Batman and X-Men comic books. I wasn't able to get to Golden Apple until 1987 but I remember all the visits since then. Yesterday I was lucky enough to take my son and daughter and it was a wonderful and enjoyable visit. It was a pleasant experience just to watch the business open on time because so many little businesses do not. This shop is filled with comic book JOY. There is a huge selection of new material and a very good selection of older books. Even though my collection is quite extensive I was able to find a Silver age Superman and a key Bronze age Detective Comic with Batman that I purchased. Staff was helpful and offered a full view of "wall" books I was interested in. In addition to all this I had a great conversation about collecting and our shared passion. Stands out as one of the best comic shop buying experiences. I highly recommend Golden Apple. read more

Ryan the owner is very knowledgeable and took me through the whole process of what books I should be trying to buy versus which books I shouldn't buy depending on what I want to do with my collection and all I can say is that I will continue coming to the shop. I was excited to support a local comic shop. Print media is something I love and I want to see still produced. However, after 3 months of waiting for my order and no communication I tried reaching out to this shop via phone. I was spoken to very harshly and talked down to about my inquiry. When I explained that because of the long wait and now this treatment I would like to cancel my order, I was yelled at being told to never shop there again. ....this is how comic stores die. Which is really sad to see. I very much suggest going to Amazing Comics and Cards in Long Beach. They won't yell at you and actually have pulls for you sent. When I told Amazing what happened they apologized for Golden and even gave me a free added comic. read more

I like to check out comic book stores when I visit different cities and look for obscure back issues and/or store specific variants that aren't easy to come by. This comic store is really nice and fit the bill for what I like to find in a new city. First and foremost, great organization on all of the products. Variants are displayed nicely around the store so they are easy to see what they have available. Also, in the back left side of the store are some older books that are on display shelves behind a counter. Current (including past several weeks) comics are located down the wall on the left when you first come in. Tons of titles are available. I'd guess that if you wanted they have pull list options available. Staff were friendly and checked if I needed help a couple times. Overall a cool place to check out. If you collect anything comic related you should check these guys out. read more

So I pre-ordered TMNT #100 1:50 ratio for the above store on October 14th. This is approximately a month and half before release. Due to this being a landmark issue I paid the above company 25 dollars over the ration cost to secure my copy. I waited and waited and finally decided to inquire about it on January 2nd. I emailed the company multiple times and received no response. I checked my Golden Apple account to find that they had marked it fulfilled on Dec 10th. I checked the USPS tracking number and saw that USPS had not received the package. I then went to the forums to vent. One person suggested that I do a charge back. Amazingly the above company responded immediately, giddy to issue me a refund. I was curious so I checked their site and noticed the comic I had ordered was sold out and listed at $125 over what I paid. Comic sellers raise prices drastically when people are in fear of missing out (FOMO). Definitely motive to lie about what happened to my comic, if they can bank an extra $125. After the refund I received a pompous email telling how great they were and had been in business for 40 Years. Their excuse was that the package was lost. Hey stated they would have sent me another copy but that I had insulted them so th y would only refund. 1) if you were a business owner and had mailed a package on Dec 10th, and had received no confirmation of delivery to USPS, would you not inquire about it before a customer complained over a month later? 2) how could you send me another copy, when your site says you are sold out? My advice would be to stay away at all cost from these scammers. read more

I was scrolling down the of reviews for golden apple because I haven't visited there in a while. Many many years ago, in the late 90s, I drop by the store to buy a yo-yo. That same day I met big Bill the owner and his wife Sharon. Bill showed me around the store and I was fascinated by not oldie the volume and variety of his inventory but how well he seem to know what he had where it was how much it cost how rare it was and just about anything else you could think of He put down a couple plastic chairs in front of the store because it was such a nice day. Melrose is obviously a very busy street specially on the weekends. It was amazing to me. How five minutes couldn't pass without somebody pulling over and giving a shout out to Bill. I couldn't believe how many people he knew. A good number of celebrities drop by to say hi. They always wanted to give him tickets to one thing or another. More often than not Bill would take the tickets and just give them to other people. Employees customers, whoever? He was a very knowledgeable and generous guy. Overtime I met his sons; Ryan and Damien. Very knowledgeable and well educated. Their personalities seem to be a good balance between Bill and Sharon. He was very proud of his sons and told me one day if I ever fade away, the store will be in good hands. My wife will step up another notch, and one of my sons will surely Step in to fill my void. It's been many years since Bill passed away, and the store has moved from the original location, but from what I've been told by people that frequent their more than I have for years, they have carried on big bills tradition of making sure people get good service and value for the troubles. Although most of the reviews are obviously positive, the reviews are peppered with one star reviews from people that have had seemingly horrible experiences. I am not going to come out of left field and say any of those people are incorrect about having a poor experience, for the simple reason that I can't prove or disprove that they did or didn't. That being said and considered, I know that golden apple hasn't been in business for so many years before and after Bill's death, treating customers poorly. Bill used to tell me that one of the key things that he went by was the practice of not being happy that you can get customers to come in and buy something. He said what got him happy was that people would go out of their way to let them know they came back again to get something else. He used to tell me customers don't keep the store alive. Repeat customers and word-of-mouth and keeping up the enthusiasm of people to want to patronize the store... That's what keeps the store in business. .... I would say to anyone who has or might in the near future when I'm not paying attention, has a bad experience in anyway in communicating, ordering online or over the phone or however... If they have a problem, they should write down the time of any incident and make sure they have a name and before they give a one star review make sure that they were trying to be part of the solution and not being part of the problem. ... from decades of communicating with others in my life, I have found that is unprofessional is it may be or may seem, sometimes the reactions you get from store personnel are directly, reflecting the attitude. The volume were the bad language that you were sending in their general direction. If a one star reviewer jumps on an employee at a store because they feel like they're not getting their way, and during their rant, they're expecting the store employee to act very professional and emotion free, they are having a fantasy bout in unreality. There is an old scene that when you throw trash directly into a fan, it comes right back at you. Effective communication for productive results... There were only two choices... You're either part of the problem or part of the solution. Ryan will not have an employee in the store that tears into the customers. I would suggest, not tell, not order not demand... But suggest if you have any problems with any dealings with golden apple comics, that you try to contact Ryan directly. If you call the store, before you really start conversing on your situation always note the time and ask the person for their name. If it's an unusual name, ask for the correct spelling. Tell the person you don't have the greatest memory, but you like to remember who you talk to. Personally, over the decades, I've never had any kind of problem when I visited the store. I sent many friends and relatives there and never had one of them Tell me that anybody there jerked them around. But like I said, the one star reviews that I read this evening, there's no way I can say those people are completely fabricating something. Because I wasn't there. What a great place! The super-knowledgeable, super-friendly staff can find you any series and the works of any author, any illustrator in nanoseconds. And, if you come in more than two or three times with the same request, they'll remember you. "You're the Brubaker/Phillips guy, right? A bunch of new, signed books just showed up. Over here." They host signings all the time and once, just for the hell of it, a clerk loaded me down with an armful of remainders. If you're in the neighborhood, it's definitely worth a look.
