I'm surprised this place is still around! Golden Corrals are franchised, and I'm sure there are probably decent ones somewhere else in the country that may be similar to Hometown Buffet. BUT this one ain't it! There were a handful of items that were decently edible like mashed potatoes and gravy. The salad bar was also alright. It's difficult to mess up chopped lettuce mix because it only requires opening a bag or container and pouring the contents into the bin. Fried chicken was fine as long as you are able to get a piece or two. I noticed if you come in later in the evening, the food is not replenished so you are stuck with bottom of the bin caked on dry remnants. Here are the highlights: the server bringing the drinks and busing tables was doing her best to be happy and welcoming. One of the cooks was very courteous and also did her best to anticipate customer needs. They get two thumbs up! Now for the fun part: The clam chowder was too salty and had an aftertaste of old dirty towel, promising a fitting end to my evening with a bad tummy ache. The cook making the steak didn't seem to care about communicating a single word with the customers. Her sole purpose was to repeatedly flip something that looked like meat and point to a bin full of burned protein hockey pucks. I noticed how the line of hungry patrons grew with eager anticipation as she stopped flipping and started attempting to slice. As each diner finally walked away with something on their plate, she was free to disappear in the back to probably make more clam chowder. I watched a couple seated near me with steak on their plate. Husband was breaking a sweat trying to slice a piece while his wife was busy trying to gracefully eject something inedible from her mouth. Now on to the pinnacle of the meal - dessert time. There wasn't much left, so I chose a slice of pecan pie. It looked promising, like something you could pick up at the local grocery store, but that's where any similarity ends. It tasted old and stale, like it was made from expired corn syrup found at the bottom of the moldy basement. The soft serve ice cream machine was screaming like an exit door alarm every time someone pulled the arm to coax out some frozen ice milk. Then I spotted the highlight of the evening. I didn't think it was possible to mess up jello, but heck you learn something new everyday. I captured that masterpiece in a photo. Sadly, the owner of this location really needs to put many improvements in place. People do enjoy going to buffets and truly miss Souplantation and HomeTown Buffet. Golden Corral has the potential to fill this gap. It is in a good location anchored by Target with lots of parking to serve a busy neighborhood in oceanside. It also has a few employees who still care to do a good job. So please take the good location and good staff and make this Golden Corral a worthy business for hungry patrons looking to spend money at a place with quality food and variety. read more

The staff was on it when it comes to clearing our table. They were efficient and friendly, that's about it. We went on Sunday lunch, arrived around 1ish. It wasn't packed, but a lot of containers were empty. Steak. They didn't have a consistent person there, at times people just waited until someone showed up. They also gave super rare meat. The outside was nicely charred, but the inside, pure red. Unfortunately, the attendant lady making it didn't speak English and luckily, a gentleman waiting with us was able to translate for us. We were asking for medium. It was still given to us super rare. Also, it was pretty much unsanitary or cross contamination as they used the same tong to grab raw meat, grill the meat, then put the meat on our plate. I'm talking about she's using the same tong mid way grabbing raw meat and flipping and giving us our steak. Food signage was all over the place. About 50% (or more) was off. So don't even bother reading those, just assume what you're grabbing. Everything tasted bland or generic, like no name brand food just got heated and put on the platter, same for the salad items. Like I mentioned, you go here to get full. We got buy one get one free meal, so essentially, for $11 per person, it's a great deal, but I'd never pay full price for them. Surprising! My son was visiting and he seems to always crave GC as he now lives in another state. He says they are different. Better where he lives. I guess we'll have to check it out. I wasn't expecting much to begin with, so maybe that's why I am surprised. Price was still a bargain considering the selection of rather tasty food (it was all pretty good); and, the fact that you can do just what I did, have a bite or two of just about everything before you get full. Arrived at four Parking was a piece of cake walked in. I was only the second one in line place empty I asked for the senior discount and I wanted to use my rewards program. Good luck with that girl had no idea so it looks like I'm gonna have to try to scam my receipt or enter the barcode when I'm done. I went to get a plate. There were only two left. I grabbed them both made myself a salad. I guess it's early but no fish no steak no nothing so I grabbed some mashed potatoes and some of the bourbon chicken The bourbon chicken is usually delicious. Not today. You could tell it's been a while. After finishing my salad, I went back to the food court looking for Fish. There wasn't no so I waited and I waited and after about eight minutes, I finally found somebody and asked she immediately went and got some. I also inquired about the other food coming out it appears there only two employees working tonight. The young woman taking the money as a cashier and one person clearing tables. When I first sat down, a young man brought me a glass of water no straw I'm finishing my meal and I'm still waiting on that straw I came here because I enjoy their white fish and their sweet potatoes. As I said earlier I had to wait forever to get the white fish and there were only a couple of pieces. I've been over half an hour and I still haven't seen a sweet potato I also haven't seen a steak or any other things they normally have and I'm still waiting on that straw. I finally went to the register. There were three other people complaining that they didn't have steak. They didn't have sweet potatoes. They don't have any of the normal foods. Grabbed a chicken wing on first plate. Inedible - so dry. After sitting for 30 minutes the same sad ginormous pieces of chicken were still there. Finally when refilled, grabbed a couple of drumsticks. Nice and hot and tasty. Other highlight were onion rings. Stayed warm and crispy under heating lamps. Oh and hubs said the bread roll was good. Some background, I'm not a buffet person so I was not expecting to go in and get a QUALITY meal but I was expecting quantity (key word BUFFET) or at least some type of EDIBLE food for the $70 I just paid for 2 adults and one small child...yes around $70 since I'm rounding. Unfortunately, they too said this was horrific and it was not like this the one off time they came. In truth, this is the worst restaurant experience I've had post Covid and that's saying something...I don't even know where to begin but here goes: We arrived around 6:20pm on 3/9 with maybe 3-4 parties ahead of me yet somehow it took the manager 20 minutes to help everyone in line pay...ok fine; they were short staffed and scrambling. You could tell it was amateur night, a server walked up to the manager and handed him a cup of forks and said "that's all we have" (no forks?) the manager was working the register and kept running off. This is peak dinner time and the forks was an omen of things to come. We pay and seat ourselves and surprise! there is no edible food, actually there is no food just old empty caked on trays and scraps. Empty tables of past diners are piled with dishes all over the restaurant. Only empty caked on trays that you can tell have been sitting for a few hours are available. Dried pasta noodles from heat lamps and entrees? One piece of pork that you can tell has been sitting. Two fried chicken drumsticks count them 2, 1 gone...I thought ok, more food is coming (it's a buffet right?) I asked if they had pizza because that's what my kid wanted and they said sure in 15 minutes but I waited for 20 min. I kept walking around with an empty plate in my hand hoping to find food I could feed my kid. I finally saw some peas and corn that looked ok and gave that to my child while I waited for the pizza. Again, I keep looking around and nothing was getting replaced. I keep telling myself they are short staffed food. I finally see some steaks getting thrown on the grill and thought ok steak and I tell everyone in my party because we are all waiting for food to come out. I wait another 15-20 min and we get little 4 oz meat pieces that are charcoal on the outside and are blue, raw inedible on the inside. I go back and ask to have my piece grilled some more. They do, I get it back and the meats still raw so I give up. I finally see the pizza...I grab 3 slices from the 1 med size pizza put out for my kid....it's barely cooked enough to serve and makes frozen pizza look gourmet. My kid says "sorry mom it's not good". I walk around again, oh they have finally brought out 1 tray of new mashed potatoes. I grab some I take two bites I leave them inedible. I walk around again, meanwhile they keep charging unsuspecting souls money to eat whatever scraps they have....even the ice cream machine is down, salad bar? they have iceberg lettuce in the salad bar along with empty vessels. It's dishonest and deceptive, now I'm really upset. I walk up to the manager and say you have No Food. His response, it's coming and I say it's been an hour there is no food, I've been waiting. He looks confused and says an hour? I reply, yes and I go grab my receipt to prove it. The people look confused probably wondering if I'm being serious? They look around and realize it's true. I continue to complain to the manager and explain how long I've been there how long I've waited and his response "I can't do anything you've been here too long! I tell him of course it's been long I keep getting told food is coming and you keep letting unsuspecting folks in! "his response I don't care tell corporate". I think I will thanks right after my yelp review. Be fair and warn customers about the situation and let them decide if they want to pay full price for your scraps! This is unsafe and borderline theft. Your restaurant was filthy, "clean" plates were dirty and the whole establishment looked disgusting. I'll cut my losses and take this as a blessing in disguise. Who knows how sick it would have made me, but I still think about letting my kid eat your stale peas and corn because she was just too hungry. I read some reviews posted the same day I went to this joke of a buffet and guess what? Patrons did get sick. AND people complained there was no food. I didn't get an apology , a discount, a refund nothing from this incompetent Manager whose last name is Chen. All he gave me was attitude and rudeness as if I was trying to swindle him, HA! Don't believe me, check out the video and pics and you decide. This was the second and last time I ever set foot in a golden coral no matter who asks me to give it a chance. Food: I've seen better, warmer, more recent food at a gas station. Everything was empty and the trays with food looked like it's been sitting there for hour. It was so dried up, i thought it was a decorative clay sculpture. The cuts of steaks are the size of a finger and you either get them in purple or gray, they don't understand temperature. I'm not exaggerating when I say that almost everyone had to blow the toilet bowl afterwards and play detective as to which mystery tray we had in common. We waited 20 minutes for food to come out NOTHING... the manager was sitting down eat with her family, they kept bringing more people in and there was no food!! I'm not a picky eater but nothing here was really good other than the fried chicken which was salty. We stopped by on a sunday as we had driven by a few times and wanted to give the place a try. We paid about $75? for 3 people. I didn't really have high expectations based off of most reviews. I went to the salad bar and all you can smell is the bathroom as it's right next to the salad bar :( the lettuce was still drenched in water. I served myself a side of salad and fries which were soggy. I also got fried chicken which was alright. None of the food options looked edible. The deserts weren't good either I got chocolate cake and by far the worst cake i've ever had. Towards the end I was atleast looking forward to ice cream BUT the ice cream machine was down. I was so shocked at how many people would come eat here! The place truly needs a visit from corporate because it is a mess! It felt like I was on a show being pranked with how messy it was. The doors to even come in and out are so dirty, my fork was dirty, my sisters cup still had food chunks around it. I would SUGGEST YOU SAVE your money and go else where. Food is cafeteria grub. There's a good amount of selections and you'll probably find something you like but it's just all very low quality, salty or greasy foods. They were extremely understaffed and tables weren't being cleaned for 10-20 minutes at a time. People and kids can be quite ruthless here. Came here when it first opened before the pandemic and it wasn't very good so we never came back. But I guess going so many years without any good buffets (rip souplantation and local casino buffets) I was dying to give it another try especially since a lot of the newer reviews are good. We spent $75 for 3 of us and I wouldn't say it's worth it. The salad bar wasn't extensive. The cheese tasted a little moldy. Everything else was what you would expect from a basic buffet. Some items were better than others. The yeast rolls are the best thing here. The desserts were sad. I'm sad they don't offer icees or cotton candy anymore. Drinks aren't self serve. Can't remember if they weee before the pandemic but I know they were at the home town buffet that was here first it took a while for our drinks to come. The dessert options are almost exclusively chocolate so if you're not a chocolate love you're SOL. There was a strawberry cake - tasted like it was from Walmart. There was banana pudding but it was empty and never refilled. Bread pudding but that never usually good at a place like this. Then there was brownies, fudge, chocolate covered marshmallows and cookies that looked really unappealing but were prob the best dessert option. Much better tasting than you would expect. I was very disappointed in Golden Corral on June 2nd, 2025. We arrived at 11:15 and we were told that it's "DINNER MENU". The dinner menu start at 11:00am. They were not even prepared for the dinner. They still had partial breakfast and dinner. The pizza they served was cold and the fried chicken was good. Just make sure that you get there an hour after breakfast has ended. This way you can be sure that you are paying for the right meal. Big disappointment for them not being prepared! The head and assistant manager was not even present. read more

Owner, Worden Cheng, is unprofessional, but most of his employees are great. The food is often empty, old and dried up, or attacked upon bring out. Bathrooms are disgusting! My husband and I went here as a joke to see how bad it could be after reading a review of a now closed buffet. It was far worse than we imagined. We paid for our meals and one diet coke. There was no instructions on how to get our drink but we were eventually helped by a bus boy/server. The drink I received did not taste like Diet Coke. He offered to bring a second one and assured me this one came from the diet coke fountain. It still didn't taste like Diet Coke (maybe it was coke zero or labeled/hooked up wrong underneath the fountain) so I chose not to finish it to avoid excess sugar. Speaking of mislabeling, almost nothing on the buffet line was labeled correctly and it wasn't even close.....things which obviously were cheese sauce was labeled beef. I asked a worker if something labeled liver was actually liver and he told me it was actually chicken stir fry so workers knew it was mislabeled. Food was not cooked properly. The fried chicken seemed underdone in the middle and cornbread was so raw that it was still runny batter when scooped! I suggest hiring a "polisher" with the main responsibility is to ensure all plates and silverware are polished and clean. Tried their breakfast today, not sure what I was going to find after reading some of the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived between 8:15 - 8:30 AM and found all the dishes full and hot. There was a large variety of breakfast foods (eggs, potatoes, various types of meat, etc.) along with lunch/brunch types of foods including the salad bar, chicken, taco bar, etc. I liked that they had gloves available near the clean plates. After covid I get a little weirded out knowing everyone is touching the serving spoons or tongs. Maybe that's just me but I had no problem putting a glove on the hand I was using to get my food. The staff was friendly from beginning to end and our server (I think that's what they're called) was Carol. She was very friendly and attentive. Visited the table every so often to make sure we had everything. I got there at a good time, and it wasn't crowded. There was plenty of staff for the number of people there. If it was busier, it's hard to say whether there were enough staff for a full house. Maybe they know it's a bit slower that early in the day and staff accordingly. The only negative for me was I wish they had little signs/labels on the glass above the dishes, so we know what they are. Yes, I knew was most of the items were but there were some I had no clue about. One I thought was French toast but upon the first bite, I learned it was made with banana bread. We've been eating at this Golden Corral location about twice a month for more than two years. It has always been good, and they've improved the food quality even more over the years. This restaurant serves delicious, classic, home-cooked comfort food buffet style in a non-pretentious setting. It's exactly what we love, and the price is excellent (less than $20 per person for breakfast and lunch). You can see them freshly making the bread, biscuits, pizza dough, pastries, etc. in the kitchen. The mashed potatoes are also homemade and extremely delicious. They have a large selection of foods to choose from, including a salad bar. Their soft-serve ice cream machine is a crowd pleaser, and the dessert selection is fantastic. It's great to sample many different types of food for the price of one entree at other chain restaurants. Everyone who works there is friendly, and they remember their repeat customers. The bathrooms have always been clean when we've eaten there (breakfast & lunch).
