Glad we found this place! Stopped here with my besties on the advice of an Iowa resident. She said "don't miss this place - there's always a line out the door on weekends and the specialty breads are delicious!" Great advice! Stopped on a Wednesday --(no long line) and we loved it! Garlic and bacon bread, Tart cups and pies were DELICIOUS and prices were good! They have tables and chairs in the back to sit and enjoy the goodies. A note to those who are health conscious. SOME stuff has hydrogenated oils and a few other not-so-healthy ingredient so take notice when reading labels. Recommend the aforementioned bread, Tart Cups and Pies. The Golden Delight Bakery is possibly the best bakery ever ever. The name alone speaks to exactly what the place is and upon entering you're greeted by smells that remind you of love and happiness. The magic is located inside a small house that sits about a mile off the main road. Seriously, it's too bad we can't take a picture of smells. Our purchases today included some delicious crescent rolls, a "half-moon" - effectively a turnover, and a caramel pecan roll that was simply amazing! The selection of pies, donuts and other pastries isn't overwhelming, but this is serious quality. The cookies are also particularly good with the oatmeal chocolate chip here, being the only ones that have ever rivaled my moms! Everything is made just behind the swinging doors and coming out throughout the day. Upstairs lives a lovely gift shop that contains an eclectic mix of items including baby dolls, rocking chairs, Amish themed books and Grandfather clocks. Plenty to keep you busy before taking your delicous baked good back home. We're discovered the place we'll be coming for all our delicious bakery needs. It claims to be a bakery, but it's so much more than that. Their cheesy garlic loaf ($2.75 a loaf?! YES PLEASE) and cinnamon bread were both to-die-for options, but I spent just as much time perusing their fresh pasta, jams, and other awesome features. Your first trip (because it won't be your last) to the store will make you wonder if you've come to the right place. Located on a gravel road off the highway, you'll come to a house that has been converted into the bakery. Go in, order a doughnut for yourself... and if they are fresh out of the oven, order two because you will end up shoving the first one in your mouth and wonder if it was all a dream. Golden Delight Bakery is housed in a little farm house off a gravel road. If you are coming from Iowa City, drive past the cheese factory and towards Kalona, turning onto Johnson-Washington. The shop will be about a mile down the road on your right. Watch out for horse and buggies (this is Amish country, after all!) While the bakery is not much to look it, the pies and other baked goods make it worth the trip. Run by the Amish, the shop is gaslit and has no electrical appliances. Instead it carries the best sticky buns I have ever had in my entire life. They are baked fresh daily and come with a goey white frosting or a caramel-pecan topping (the latter is my personal favorite). On busy days it is worth hovering by the back door in hopes of getting a tray of fresh sticky buns to take on the road. I have not tried the pies, but they look spectacular. If they are anywhere near the unbelievable deliciousness of the sticky buns then I'm sure they are worth a try. And about those sticky buns... Imagine a soft, warm, fluffy, freshly baked, melt-in-your-mouth roll topped with just the right amount of caramelized sugar and just the right amount of pecans. Every time we have bought a platter of these buns, they were demolished in a single evening. To be honest, because these buns are fresh, they are really best eaten the day they are baked. After a day or so they are reduced to the level of really really good sticky buns (instead of amazingly fantastically delicious best-you've-ever-had sticky buns on the day of). Was a little skeptical after my first trip here. I got a loaf of their rye bread, and while good, it was too soft to even spread peanut butter on. That's a big ol' bummer right there. However, Half moon pies? Pretty damn good. Who needs a whole moon? Glazed donuts? Awesomely fluffy. Cinnamon raisin bread? Holy shit. I ate the whole loaf in 24 hours. No butter, no spreads, just me pulling slice after slice out of the bag and shoving them into my grubby little mouth. Their bread really isn't suited to my general purposes of sandwich making, but that doesn't really matter.
