My Mom's Bakery opens EARLY every Tuesday through Saturday: they start baking their goods in the wee hours of the morning, and by 6 AM, their front doors are open and their kolaches and other baked goods are ready to be enjoyed. Their hours technically go until 11 AM, but they actually close for the day when they sell out, which is almost always earlier than that because they are so popular. So, it's important to get here as close to 6 as you can if you want the best selection. As I mentioned earlier, their kolaches are some of the best I've ever had. This quintessential Czech pastry, which comes in many different fruit (or possibly cheese or poppy-seed) varieties, is a very popular treat in this part of Iowa. However, even though it's easy to find kolaches around Cedar Rapids, it's difficult to find really good, traditional ones. The kolaches here remind me of the types I used to enjoy when I visited Cedar Rapids as a child, with a super light, airy dough and generous helpings of fruit in the middle. Their other pastries, including pecan cinnamon rolls and lemon bars, are fantastic as well. My Mom's Bakery also has a brand new, state of the art espresso machine, and they offer a full range of espresso drinks. I really enjoyed their plain espresso, but you can get drinks with milk as well. The shop itself is small, with just some counter seating (as well as a couple tables out front), so it's probably best to plan to take your baked goods to go. They do have a large, clean bathroom. The staff here is super nice, and we really enjoyed chatting with them about their story and operation. They obviously put their whole heart into this little shop, and it shows. We can't wait to come back the next time we are in Cedar Rapids.

I get here at about 5:55 on a Friday or Saturday to get my fix. I've heard they can run out before their closing time, and I don't want to take that chance! Always cinnamon rolls...but this morning, a lemon bar too. The lemon bar is fragrant and the crust is buttery perfection. After a few bites from my new favorite, I moved on to the pecan roll. Goodness gracious they are delicious. Perfectly baked bread and the caramelization and nuts are perfectly toasted. I hope to see you at 5:55 am at My Mom's Bakery!

I love the counter service concept and being able to pick my pastry out of the case before finding a seat. I ordered the breakfast burrito, a lemon poppyseed muffin, and a latte. For brunch catching up with a friend, it was the perfect blend of savory and sweet. And MAN was the breakfast burrito delish - I adore when breakfast items have a hearty serving of avocado, and the burrito struck the perfect balance of avo and egg goodness. The accompanying sauce was also delicious. My only complaint is I'm not a local so I can't visit more often. Definitely give this one a try!

My son had the grand idea to stop by for a brownie and when they walked in we were greeted by a friendly hostess who asked if we needed a table for 4. We were still thinking we would stick to just a sweet treat, until we looked at the menu and were told it was happy hour. We decided to all get dinner and were not disappointed! The meal was started with some delicious bread rolls, the beers were only $1.50 on happy hour and they even gave us scotcharoos to end our experience!! We are already planning our next trip so I hope to see you there! I promise it won't disappoint!

My son-in-law had the cinnamon rolls served at Iowa River Landing recently and pronounced them among the best he'd ever had--and he's had plenty! My daughter isn't a baker and decided to order desserts for Thanksgiving here. They were simply perfection. We agreed we have never tasted a better French silk pie. The chocolate flavor was strong and distinct, with a nice balance of lightness and creamy texture like a well-prepared mousse. It's clear the ingredients used were top quality. There was just a hint of saltiness that intensified the sweetness, and the crust was flaky and light. The whipped cream and flakes of chocolate on top were ideal complements to the filling. It's so good we all agreed we need to order another for Christmas, and I'm planning on serving one for my book club, too. What a hit! My daughter also ordered the turkey cookies--genuine works of art. None of us have seen such intricate, creative, colorful designs and the younger children in the family were just captivated! One of the grandchildren has an extremely severe peanut allergy. When my daughter called to ask about the safety of the products in that case, the person she spoke with was so kind and helpful. Some places we've found to be dismissive or defensive. Not so, The Eat Shop. They DO use peanuts sometimes, but they had not used any peanut products in the kitchen for a week prior to Thanksgiving, and they indicated that the risk would be extremely low of any cross-contamination. That is a fair and useful assessment, and we very much appreciated the information. Oh, and wonder of wonders in today's sometimes difficult, hit-or-miss business environment, the pie and cookies were beautifully packaged and DELIVERED to the door with a cheery reminder from the driver that "the pie should be refrigerated." I can very highly recommend The Eat Shop as a lovely little place to find something tasty and gorgeous for a special holiday or just a delightful treat for you or the family. It's easy to order in advance. All of us in the extended family have pretty distinct taste preferences, yet each of us was happy as could be, and that is what I'd call "a Thanksgiving miracle"!
