I had no idea that ear anatomy was so difficult, so thank goodness I went to him! My original idea (which I was told at a different shop I could've done) would have hit a blood vessel in my ear and ended terribly. SPYRO SAVED MY EARS and did a beautiful job. He works with you and your budget and your anatomy to create a custom look that you will love. I'm completely sold on Gypsy Hill, and as soon as this piercing is healed, I'm going back to help dress up my other ear ! Do yourself a favor and visit them! I'll be back for my tattoos in the near future. ************************************************ I started going to Kim years ago when her shop was on E. Franklin Street. She does excellent work and until this day people always ask me who and where I've gotten my tattoos done. I give them Kim's name and her shop constantly. I stop going to the shop because of the cancellations. One time it was 20 minutes when I was on my way to the shop and the next it was the day before I received a call to reschedule. Few times before then. I definitely didn't care for the piercing person she had there and some of the other people that worked with her. They had an attitude that made me feel like I had the plague, but I didn't care as my artist was Kim. Kim was always cool and very creative. I would have stayed with her if not for the cancellations. Got a huge hunter x hunter tattoo here from Tyler and it was amazing although inevitably painful experience. It was my first tattoo and I love it so much. The staff was super nice and caring and let me munch on some snacks and stuff so I didn't pass out and even got me a little stuffed animal to squeeze super hard to distract me from the pain of the tattoo needles. I am definitely planning to do another large piece from here as I love the vibe and artistry of the shop, highly recommend if u need a piercing or tattoo to go here as they will make sure to do a good job. read more

I came in with a nose piercing change gone wrong that was done somewhere else. I just needed my piercing to be fixed because I saw it was not healing right and the jewelry was stuck. Pat took his time to diagnose went went wrong and he did his best to get the jewelry out and put new jewelry in that would help my piercing site heal. I do not recommend. Maybe if you are young with a " cooler than though" attitude, you may enjoy this place. First off, when I was looking for the place, it was in a really nice neighborhood in Chapel hill, which is fine, just very unassuming. I walked in, and the front desk girl was very snooty, along with the piercer. They seemed very " I'm cooler than you with my piercings and tattoos" attitude, I've seen it many times over my years as a tattooer and tattoo conventions. It's obnoxious. Anyways.. the pricing was super high and I just had to walk out. I just came back from a more professional place with less sneaky pricing, and appreciated the other place that I went to even more. I am very upset with my experience! I got a daith piercing a couple months ago (roughly August) and was told I was getting surgical grade jewelry. I paid $100!!! For crap jewelry and a piercing. The piercer acted like he was doing me a favor getting me out the door only charging me $100 while most places will do it with actual surgical grade jewelry for no more than $40. I would give it 0 honestly. Went to get my septum jewelry changed because my piercer was closed for the day. I bought the jewelry and laid in the chair for almost an hour as the piercer struggled to fit the piercing in and had to keep switching the jewelry because it wouldn't "fit". He finally got a hoop in with a taper...because he pierced another whole in my cartilage. I was in so much pain I ended up taking it out the next day and went to my regular piercer a month later so she could remove the scar tissue and fix the piercing. I wasted $70. read more

I came here with my 8 year old daughter to have her ears pierced. Pat was PHENOMENAL! He took the time to explain everything to her and was super patient when she was looking at all the different earring options. I was beyond pleased that he required my daughters consent to have her ears pierced (and of course my consent). I also set up an appointment for myself at the same time. I had my ears re-pierced after originally having them done with a piercing gun 30+ years ago. If you ever had the gun then you probably remember the pain and trauma it caused. Emity was SO AMAZING!! Needle piercing is so much better!! Very slight, but quick, discomfort and you're done! Emity also focused on education and consent. I'm an RN and I know sterile procedure when I see and I SAW IT! Super clean studio and amazing staff. My 5 year old who was with us tends to be a bit anxious in new situations and she happily sat next to us without a care in the world. So, why should you come see Pat and Emity? 1. Super clean and friendly environment. 2. Amazing staff that are trained in their craft. 3. Communication happens the second you get here and that means no surprises. 4. Education and consent so everyone is on the same page. Don't go somewhere else and have an untrained store employee pierce you. Come here for your piercings from the trained professionals. You won't regret it!! Tip: if a child is being pierced check to see what documentation you will need to bring with you to prove that you are their legal guardian. read more

This is an updated review from my initial 5-star review last week. I got three piercings done by Mermaid and within a week of getting the piercings done she had left the shop and unfortunately one of my earrings fell out. I went back to the shop to get it re-pierced the same day the earring fell out. I was told that because Mermaid doesn't work there anymore that I would be recharged for something that took under a minute at the shop I had just spent almost $100 at one week prior. I ended up paying $20 after 2 attempts at up-selling me on jewelry when all I needed was to get an earring in my ear so the hole wouldn't close up. At the end of the day $20 isn't a massive expense but I was pretty disappointed with this type of customer service overall, especially after such a pleasant one initially. read more

I highly encourage checking out this place. Kim has done many of my pieces and I am now in the process of getting a full leg sleeve done by her. She rocks the new school pieces, but she is very capable of doing other styles. I'd be willing to travel to the moon to get work from her, but luckily I don't have to because Gypsy Hill is a lot closer than that. read more

A very professional and clean studio with knowledgable staff. Unfortunately, also deceitful. Prices are not displayed visibly, but instead written messily on a ripped out sheet of paper and pen. Employees are not on the same page of how to advertise cost, which looking back is probably on purpose. It is a shame to have a really great experience up until the last 5 minutes at checkout! I felt that because we were clearly not regulars and were young we were taken advantage of. I wish the studio luck at their new location and hope they cater to a more affluent, less gullible clientele. I will enjoy my piercing about as much as I enjoy eating cereal for dinner for the rest of the week due to the outrageous price of my simple lobe piercing. read more

Do NOT go here if you want clean lines or an artist that takes your requests seriously. I stopped by for a small design on my wrist recently on a trip to Chapel Hill. The design was basically just 6 small lines, and I requested it to be thin like my nearly identical existing one. The artist (small girl, curly hair) drew the most CROOKED lines ever and didn't even acknowledge it. I'm sure she was sober and was just having a bad day, but these lines make me wonder. I'm scheduling a tattoo removal for once it heals. I never write yelp reviews but for the love of GOD, spare yourself the heartache and go somewhere else. read more
