This review is primarily for the mochi stand by the entrance of Golden Mall. A few days ago, I had stopped by to order a stuffed mochi. This came out to $10. The options for filling include: lychee rose cream, matcha cream, mango cream, taro, and purple rice(my fave). After the filling gets packed into the mochi, it is sprinkled and dusted with crumbs or pork sung. There is not a lot of seating area in the golden mall, so I'd highly suggest taking the order to go. The mochi was good, but will become stale if you leave it overnight. I'd highly recommend eating it right away. read more

I have had quite a few things from this mall that are always enjoyable. I usually stick to sweets from this mall as I have had the Yaya Tea, Cotte Latte as well as Good Coconut. I stopped by the other day because I heard they had replaced one of their stores with something new and I knew I had to try it! They currently have a new store called the Golden Sponge (doesn't have a Yelp yet) and it was definitely worth the trip! I grabbed a couple of different flavored sponge cakes and took them home to enjoy! Starting off, the original flavor was only $1 and it was nice and fluffy as well as not too eggy and not overly sweet. I also got the Pandan Flavor which was $1.25 not too sweet as well but was a little denser than the original one. The Pandan flavor was easily found when eating and for $1.25, I feel like that price is pretty unbeatable. Lastly, I ended off with the Strawberry Flavor which was also $1.25 (all flavored ones are $1.25). Now this one was a little disappointing as it was the densest out of the three and the strawberry flavor was a little hard to find. This might be a personal preference though because I do love a good artificial strawberry. But it wasn't too sweet either and again, I felt like the price justified the flavor. The person at the store was super sweet and helped me navigate the flavors because I wanted to get one of each but did not have the stomach space for that. They have so many other options too that I have yet to try like a chocolate flavor, a confetti flavor, etc. I will be back to try the other flavors as well as some of the soufflé cheesecakes I saw chilling by the side fridge! read more

Hidden gem of a food hall in flushing! There are many options- they have all kinds of food from baked goods and dessert to dry hot pot and noodle soup. Tried Lao Ma and Ginza Don. From Lao Ma we got dry hot pot with a peanut sauce because we didn't want something too spicy, but it ended up lacking a bit of flavor. We enjoyed the ingredients though- definitely stick to the standard spicy mala dry hot pot. From Ginza Don we got the Chashu Rice Bowl and the Cheese Sausage Corndog- the meat had a nice smoky yet sweet flavor and the corndog was tasty and had a great cheese pull. Convent located across from the train. There are a lot of stalls to choose from. It's not quite as cute as all of the social media videos show it to be however it's still a great experience overall. As a family of three, we tried food and drinks from five different stalls. Staff was friendly and there wasn't too much of a wait for any food item. Some tables were dirty but there are janitors circulating around available to clean them if needed. My advice would be to arrive more around lunchtime because the closer you get to closing more more stalls tend to shut down. read more

I feel like this is a hidden gem in Flushing since it's downstairs and doesn't look like much from the exterior. Lots of authentic Chinese food stalls in a small compact area with some seating. It can be intimidating at first, but the menus at every place are in English and Mandarin and the staff also speak both. The restrooms are tiny, door barely opens and closes. read more

I was in food heaven here and there was such a variety of authentic and varied Chinese food here that I wish I could eat there for 2 weeks! It is a blessing of a place to eat and just walk around and see and experience so many different parts of Chinese food all in one place! The stalls are all individually owned and the people are all so friendly and helpful. If you speak Chinese (Mandarin) that will help a lot but the folks there will still try to help you through their menus. Give it a try! It is worth the trip! read more

We first started coming here to the basement about 20 years ago when there was an all you can eat, no-frills (grungy?) hotpot place in the rear. Some prepared foods were actually stored in the bathroom, yikes! That was a true "secret spot" frequented by older school kids, hipster foodies (Anthony Bourdain!) and mostly locals. The newly renovated Golden Mall is much more gentrified, cleaner and should have a wider audience, but one can still transfer RMB/USD between the US and China here. We decided on the dry pot and chose our ingredients from the self-service bar at $13.99/pound. The dry pot is cooked per your requested spice level-we ordered medium, which was about a 3 out of 10. Food is cooked very quickly and within 5 minutes our food was brought to our self service table. As far as local, Flushing, dry pot, for us Laoma Malatang in the basement of the New World Mall is still the best tasting, but this is a pretty close second. The wok temperature here is slightly lower and the finished product doesn't have the same level of dryness. In all, lunch was $35 including 2 bowls of rice (included free) and 2 cans of soda. read more

Many of the stalls are local Flushing favorites: ViVis Bubble Tea, Yozi duck noodles etc. I was a bit disappointed that this Yozi didn't have dry hot pot on the menu like its first location in New World Mall, but maybe they'll start offering it in time. I loved this place when it was a real hole in the wall. Now that they cleaned it up the food is all mostly the same. Very little difference from one stall to the next. Much more commercial vs the mom and pop feel it had before and my favorite stall that was right at the entrance is gone! They had various pockets filled with different fillings. My favorite was the breakfast one that had eggs and chives and they had steamed pork buns and other buns and spicy cumin lamb and everything was so good and so delicious but no more. I gotta try and find another place like that. There's gotta be one in the neighborhood somewhere... maybe I should've given it four stars because if you didn't know what it was like before you probably would like it, but I'm so disappointed with the change that I settled on three stars. THAT front stall! My girlfriend and I were in need of a quick, cheap snack/meal on a random Saturday evening and we came upon the infamous Golden Shopping Mall, where it all started for Xian Famous Foods. Xian has since moved a few doors down and, well, expanded into a nice "little" business, but there still remains many authentic northern Chinese entrepreneurs in here. Initially, we walked inside and noticed the small seating area for the hole in the wall restaurants inside/"food court", but weren't sure if we wanted to eat and sit or just grab and go. We walked back out and checked out the food that the fella manning the front stall was selling and it all looked good .. and inexpensive! We were about to walk away, but the man hollered at us in English and asked us what we wanted. To be honest, some of the merchants in Flushing can be downright cold, but this gentleman couldn't be any more friendlier to us as he even volunteered to pose for one of my Yelp photos, but I respectfully declined. We ended up ordering a few items from his stall: a pork bun, lamb burger, beef burger and 2 Chinese chive pocket pancakes with scrambled egg filling. All of it came out to about $11 only! None of the food was anything new to us, since we were used to the flavors, so we loved each and every bite of what we ordered. Plus, we were starving! For the newbies though, the lamb and beef burgers are basically like pita pockets with minced lamb and beef meat. The pork bun is exactly what it's name implies. The chive pocket pancakes are filled with small bits of scrambled eggs and chives. All you have to know is that it's all delicious ... and cheap! We will definitely be back here soon! read more

Not exactly the cleanest environment or smells too good making your way inside. The price point is great, and the food is amazing. If it were the Cold-in Shopping Mall, it'd be freezing inside. Oh wait, in winter it really is. And if it were the Embolden Shopping Mall, then visiting it would cause you to become more brave in general. Oh wait, that may be true. And if it were the Beholden Shopping Mall, then you would find something spectacular to behold inside. And that part is definitely true... BEHOLD! THE "N1" AT XI'AN! Lamb Cumin Handpull Noodle, possibly the best dish in Flushing, in Queens, in NYC, in the USA, and maybe the world. Much better here than at any of the many chain/franchise Xi'an locations popping up around NYC. This is the original, the basement, the best. This is where to come. Of course Xi'an has many other foods to try and some of the (cough cough Lamb Cumin Burger cough) are incredible, but none are as life-changing as the N1. And of course there's Lam Zhou and Lamb Noodle, and many other excellent places to eat within the Golden Mall, but nothing compares to going down the stairs, navigating the catacombs of the East Asian back street-replica underground (OK it's not that hard but it's fun to imagine it is) (I'm talking about finding Xi'an), and getting the N1 and being in heaven, and completely full, for ages. Basically, if you haven't been here, you must. It's more important to experience this place than anything in Manhattan, food-wise. Heading for Brooklyn? Sure, for some vintage dresses and a stacked burger and some bacon flavoured Ice Cream. But if you want the real NYC, the NYC that doesn't exist anywhere else, you come to Queens, head for Flushing, enter the dingy, dirty, run-down, busy, almost-exclusively-Asian, barely-English-speaking Golden Mall, and you go to Xi'an. **This review is for the HOT POT joint at the bottom level of this mall (all the way in the back). {Ambiance} Loud, Crowded, and not the cleanest. I feel like I've been warped back to China. They offer some really tasty and authentic food here, so I don't mind. Its like I'm eating at my grandpas house in China. If you're a germaphobe, this may not be your cup of tea. {Service} Quick. You sit down and tell them you want the hot pot. Don't expect big smiles and a friendly hello. There is no menu. They immediately start setting up your hot pot items. Just let them do their thing and you will have a delicious array of food in front of you in no time. Some of the servers here speak a bit of English, so if you don't speak Chinese you should be ok. Just keep it simple. If you want more of something (ie. broth or meats), just point at it and say "more please." That's really straight forward. {Food} I always get the half spicy and half non spicy broth. The half spicy is the REAL deal here fellas. Its mouth numbing, eye watering, going to have to visit the toilet all night kind of spicy. Very authentic though and just the way I like it. All of their hot pot items (crab, fish balls, veggies, enoki mushroom, shrimp, meats, tofu,etc) are UNLIMITED. If that isn't great enough...their sodas and water bottles are UNLIMITED too. There is a fridge in the back that is filled with all sorts of sodas and water. You help yourself and get as many as you want. There is a sauce bar (i.e soy sauce, hot sauce, cilantro, green onions, sesame paste, etc.) where you can make your own creation to dip your food in. I think there is a small sign stating that the sauce bar is a dollar. Though, I'm not quite sure how much they enforce that charge. Honestly the food is delicious inside the mall but the area where it's located is closed by a supermarket so it smells really really gross. If you could hold your breathe for 10sec and just rush down the food court then you're good. They have a lot of options inside the food court and I always go to the second store to right when I first go in. My mom and I always get pork noodle. Their pork is always one huge piece of pork and super tender; it's not the small diced one. The noodle is $6.50 each. Try it !! Another thing is that the store doesn't have any space for you to sit down and eat so if you wanna sit in and eat then you have to go to the back and there's sitting areas dedicated to this store and they will bring the noodle to you to the back. read more

This is essentially a small, secret, hole in the wall, divey food court. When you walk down the stairs into the basement, it feels like you dug a hole to China and stepped into a secret little food world. I initially walked right by this place so you have to look for it. It's small and grungy. There is seating but not a lot. Didn't look crowded though, it might be too hidden to attract crowds. I didn't actually eat here as I was alone and had plans to try a different restaurant. I'd like to return with a friend or two (not the place for large groups) although I hesitate somewhat as it didn't look like the cleanest place in the world. It's very smelly because it's such a small space. I'm sure there are some vegetarian options but you might feel a bit ill from all the meat laying around in close proximity (I repeat, it's a small space). It's certainly an experience though so I suggest you at least check it out. Oh and it's cheap which is a plus. If you're squeamish and want something more modern and polished, go to the New World Mall to eat - they have a large food court with a million options (but it's sure to be crowded). read more

This is the mall where X'ian Famous Foods (they recently closed their stall) and Tianjin Dumplings got their starts. When you descend down the stairs your first time here, you wonder if it is really the right place. Coming in from Main Street there are often some less than savory characters hanging out inside the entrance (I have never seen them bother anyone) and once you go down the stairs you will see many (mostly food) stalls with cheap stools or counters at which to sit. But upon further examination, you will realize that most of the stalls are clean with A or B board of health ratings, prices are low and service is friendly...though it does help if you speak at least a little Mandarin. In some ways I dread writing this review as this not so well known mall is slowly becoming more and more crowded with "lao wai" (I liked being the exception) each time I visit! In fact I discovered a new dumpling place when the past two times there were no seats left at my favorite, Tianjin Dumpling. My new place was great but sorry you will have to find it yourself because previously I reviewed Tianjin Dumpling and now I can't get a seat for myself! read more

Whoa, a friend told me last night that the underground Golden Mall in Flushing has closed, taking with it our favorite dumpling spot. We called it the Three Ladies dumpling restaurant - located at the end of the side ramp leading down into the mall and not far from the former Xi'an Famous Foods stall. Even though dumplings are Not my thing- I parked myself in front of the most central stall- the pork-meat-customizable dumpling stall. The lanky woman who runs the joint hasn't got too much patience when I couldn't exactly decide- so she made up my mind for me- pork, shrimp egg and chive it is. While waiting she told me the pay per lb prices of marinaded innards on display- which were really up my alley. I made her give me a small plate of 4 items, tendon, tripe, bamboo shoots and cucumber. $5. As were the made to order dumplings boiling away. It's as hole in the wall as it gets- but surprisingly clean and devoid of anything funky smelling- actually smells deliciously of broth and cured meats and soy. My dumplings were piping hot and so flavorful. The shrimp flavor just works magically with pork and whatever veggie you'd like to throw in too. I wish they were fried because the dumpling skin started to get a bit gummy after 5 or 6. Or 7. Anyway, I put away all 12 with my marinaded side of goodies when all said and done- I cannot resist good meat with crushed pepper oil and a bath of black vinegar. New fave spot. read more

Now Golden Mall is the oldest food court in Flushing after Flushing Mall was closed down years ago. Flushing Mall is now under construction to become some kind of building and possibly another food court. Golden Mall used to be the to-go for Chinese food when Flushing was not populate by Chinese restaurants and new food courts. It consists of varies of quick meals shop similar to fast food and most of them are street food in China. Tourists and people who are new to the neighborhood tends to go to the new food courts like the New World Mall (biggest food court in Flushing) or New York food court(newest food court). Years ago, La Ma Ma La Ting and Xi'an Famous was originated from here and now it has expanded and became a chain restaurants. Almost all the restaurants of La Ma Ma La Ting are located in Queens, Flushing. Most of them are in the food court and one has become a hot pot restaurant close to the Queens Botanical Garden. Xi'an Famous has become so popular that it has restaurants through NYC. Then there is a dumpling shop right next to Xi'an Famous, they also expanded and created a dine in restaurant named Dumpling Galaxy which is at the corner of Franklin Ave and Main Street. Who have thought all of these restaurants have such an influence in NYC. While these restaurants has expanded, there are few that did not but still they are some of the best quick meal restaurants in NYC. There is the lamb noodle soup in which the soup(slow cook for hours) has strong lamb tastes and it is unbelievably good. On the same floor, there is a soup dumplings shop and right next to it is another restaurant that serves peanut butter noodle. Walk into basement, the first restaurant spotted is the restaurant that serves very spicy noodle and food. Across from that is Lan Zhou Hand Pulled Noodle. Everything here are affordable so you can always try something without worrying about your budget. I just love this place and hopefully it will be the same forever. But Possibly not, due to gentrification in Flushing things are changing rapidly. I will always go back as long as it is still there. I think one of the best place to get authentic Chinese food without traveling to China is New York. You can get the best and the most authentic Chinese food here if you are a bit courageous and a bit adventurous. Just like most of Asia this place is small, crowded,may be not the most hygienic looking places but believe me they make the yummiest and tastiest food that you can't get in any top restaurant. There might be some language barrier but everyone speaks the language of good food. There are some really hiden gems in this so called mall. If you thought the food court at your local Westfield Shopping outlet was exceptional, you haven't had anything more gritty, delicious, and gut wrenching than the many local eateries you'll find at Golden Mall in Flushing. Gritty = soup dumplings, savory pancakes, crispy skin duck buns, and hand pulled noodles for under $6 combined (that's not a typo), prepared in ways that may cause you to want to close your eyes while being whipped together in front of your face. Delicious = just that: no matter if your food was dropped on the floor and surreptitiously placed back in a steamer or frying pan (I witnessed this first hand with my meal), you sort of just turn your cheek the other way and hope you get home before that comes into play later... Gut wrenching = well, if you're anything like me... the grub is so delicious and cost effective, you'll hardly bat a lash when you spend the next 18 hours chugging Pepto Bismol like your life depended on it. But trust - it's worth it. Not sure what kind of magic concoction would leave my insides in ruins, yet appreciative of the experience... but they managed to pull it off. Bottom Line - OMG. I had no idea that this place existed until a friend of mine told me about it. I am a huge fan and would not only go out of my way to come back, I would make this the destination to go to eat (except not vendors 15 and 17). On Sunday, April 11, 2010, my eating companion and I had a plan to eat our way through Flushing in one afternoon (which took 30 minutes on the 7 train from Times Square). Since we wanted to eat as many different things as possible, we decided to share everything we ordered. We were able to hit 4 food vendors in this location, as well as a few street vendors a block down (we're suckers for trying food). We probably spent about 2 hours eating at these vendors. The following are the vendors we ate at (also see my uploaded photos). We were able to hit 4 of the vendors: Xi An Famous Foods (Vendor #36) We ordered the [A1] Liang Pi "Cold Skin Noodles" and the [B2] Savory Cumin Lamb Burger. Total cost was $6.50. The lamb burger was VERY savory and the cumin seasoning was fantastic! It was slightly but not too much spicy. The bun was a great consistency to go along with the lamb, and because this vendor's food comes from the western province, it has a little middle-eastern influences to it. The noodle dish was pretty good, too. I would order both dishes again. Hou Yi Taiwanese Steak House (Vendor #29) We ordered the Oyster Pancake and Popcorn Chicken. Total cost was $9.00. The Oyster Pancake was very good and memorable. My eating companion is from Taiwan and she said that this is as good, if not better, than the best oyster pancake she has had in Taiwan. If I could eat more, I would have ordered another one. The popcorn chicken was very similar to a Japanese chicken kara aga. It was salted enough, but somehow did not have the kind of flavour that would make this memorable. We did not finish the chicken and took it in a to-go container because we wanted to eat at other vendors, too. Guizhou Beef Noodle (Vendor #15?) We ordered the regular beef noodle at $4.50. The noodles weren't anything different than I've had before, and the beef was pretty tender. The food at this vendor was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. I probably would not come here again, but only because there are other options from other vendors. Wenzhou Zhu (Vendor #17?) We came here only because we saw a sign for shanghai dumplings (in Chinese characters). This dish was $4.00 and they informed us it would take about 10 minutes to steam them, so we walked around and came back. You get 8 dumplings, which was pretty good for the price. However, these dumplings aren't really Shanghai dumplings. The outer skin of the dumpling was bread instead of what you normally get. If I had known they used bread for the shell, I would not have ordered it. Also, the pork stuffing was not very good. It was more like ground pork inside a white steamed bun. I would definitely not come back to this vendor. Xie Jia Cai (Vendor #38) We did not have the stomach space to eat here, but at a dozen dumplings for $3, we could not resist and requested to purchase fresh pork dumplings (uncooked). We brought these home and had the dumplings for dinner. The dumplings were okay... nothing out of the ordinary. I suspect they would have been much better had we ate them freshly cooked by the vendor. Next time, I will eat them on-site. read more

Authentic, hole-in-the-wall-y, Chinese cuisine located in a basement... Anthony Bourdain brought the popularity here when he tried Xian's Famous Foods... but I'm going to spill the beans on a DIFFERENT secret yall Americans don't know about. Ready for it???? The 2nd food stall to the left, after you enter the basement makes the most dahlicious BRAISED PORK NOODLE SOUP for $5. The meat unravels itself and just falls off the bones in this tart-like delicious broth. Introduced to me by my parents, this is a Wenzhou delicacy that's too good to pass. Their seating is actually located all the way straight ahead to the back of the basement (with red walls). Come here for the CHEAP FOOD. Not decor - it's quite dingy looking, really. read more

Golden Mall - Braised pork with flat handmade noodles. 2nd stall to the left!! - Food Court Near Me - Flushing, New York

I have to say it took me a while to find this place. I went in the main entrance but only saw a few food vendors and couldn't find the food stall I wanted which was listed as being in the basement. I exited "the mall" and looped around outside and wandered some more until I found the downstairs entrance. Man it was a tough find - couldn't even tell it was connected to the main floor of the mall I was on. Anyways I didn't read the reviews that well and didn't realize that this was not the modernized Asian mall but rather more like ones I went to when I was travelling through Asia. So be prepared for a bit of a culture shock. I mean it's different but keep an open mind as many of those shops had "A" health inspector grades posted. The original Xian's Famous Food started here and Bourdain himself ate through here. There's a few dumpling and hand pulled noodles shops. It's no frills and a bit dingy but it is an experience and the food was worth it. Just note that there's not a lot of English posted and limited spoken so just speak slowly and point at what you want. read more

For all of you non Asians such as myself, this is a great spot to get some tasty Asian goodness however unequal treatment may be a turn off. This place is hidden among all the stores on the main road of Main Street, the only reason I had an idea that a place like this existed was due to countless foodie shows on cable showing these hidden treasure troves of food. It looks like only a single quick stop restaurant on the outside but when you walk in you see a hallway that leads to the abyss with stores lines on each side. I didn't have to wander any further, there was a little, 12 seating, restaurant with some tasty dim sum options and soups to the immediate right from the entrance. I decided to give it a try and my tongue was in for a pleasant surprise. Now don't let the shaggy, not so clean atmosphere fool you. Place has a B rating but the food gets an A from me. I only tried the steamed pork buns because that's what I was in the mood for at the time but the other dishes people where eating looked fantastic. The pork bun was so well seasoned, the pork melted in my mouth. The broth in the bun was savory, I could taste a hint on ginger in it. It was just perfect, but I gave them the three stars for the wait and being skipped. I had only one order to go and there where many people after me whom ordered more items as well as steamed buns but was taken care of before I was. Although, the cooks were pleasant, I felt as if that was not cool at all. Because of that, I don't know if I would go back. Maybe with another person but probably not by myself. So, if you are in town and want to try some authentic Chinese pork buns, I'd say give this place a try (if you don't mind the wait), affordable and delicious. read more

Coming here feels like a small trip to Taiwan or China, a place where Mandarin is spoken, small stools, and a quick bowl of noodles or dumplings are consumed. FOOD: There are a lot of choices but we ate at two places: Lanzhou Ramen and a Shanghainese place. The Lanzhou places is downstairs and the Shanghainese place is upstairs. The Shanghainese place we got soup dumplings, "old duck noodles" (lots of duck organs like liver and blood), and pan fried dumplings. The Lanzhou place I had sparerib noodles but ramen style, by accident. All was good. Keep the appetite up. Don't let the language barrier get you. This is the real Chinatown of New York, not Canal Street. Find somebody to help translate or speak slowly and clearly, and you'll be well rewarded! read more
