The food was OK, soups weren't super flavorful. Actually quite bland. Dim Sum was good and cooked fresh to order. Service was good and the inside was very nice. 2 stories with a nice winding staircase. Located in Chinatown in the center of London.

    Pork Dumplings were delicious....

Really delicious option for Chinese food in London. Everything was on point from the Chow Mein, Shu Mei, Salt & Pepper shrimp, and won ton soup. Was great setting, as well as a short weight. Plentiful menu and overall delicious food. Make sure you check it out.

One of my wife's goals during our London visit was to have Peking Duck in Chinatown. Upon entering the gates of Chinatown, we saw Golden Phoenix and decided to try it. I heard once that you know you're at an authentically good Chinese restaurant if you have a surly waiter. Well, in our case, we should've had great food, because our waiter was not exactly Mr. Personality. He seemed impatient, and had a rudimentary command of the English language at best. However, I will say he brought out the food very quickly, and we did order several items to family-share. The Peking duck my wife craved came out first. Mr. Surly, using a butter knife and fork, deftly cut up/shredded the duck into easy to eat pieces. The duck was flavorful, and most importantly, moist (I've had more instances of overcooked, dry duck than I care to recall). I had a really delectable soup, sweet creamed corn with crab. The pork dumplings had a nice savory quality. Spare ribs with chili and salt were rather small, but had a nice presentation. Mixed vegetable noodles were "meh". The Szechuan beef was good, but extremely hot, a 5-alarm mouth fire for sure! There are a myriad of other items available, their menu is one of the most extensive I've seen. In summation, the Peking duck was rather good, and that's what we wanted. However, the other food was just "ok" and the dining experience (rather loud and chaotic) combined with the surly server left something to be desired. Also, some of the prices are market, and the bill turned out to be higher than anticipated. 3.25 stars overall for Golden Phoenix.

We were stuck eating here on Christmas night as nearly everything around town was closed. There was an extremely long line outside however we waited through it to get a table. There was a sign on the front of the door saying it was Cash only for the day due to the Holiday, which also meant they had set menus with pricier dishes than normal. We asked for water when we got there and watched them fill it up under the sink. We ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken along with Chicken Fried Rice and Fried Wontons. The food came out after quite a long wait. It seemed like all the other table around us were getting service a lot faster than us. The fried rice and chicken came out together. The rice was the worst version of fried rice Ive ever eaten and the chicken was unimpressive as well. They had forgotten the fried wontons so we had to remind them twice. When they came out we were stunned. They were simply fried wonton wrappers with a tiny sliver of meat. It was definitely not worth the price they charge. The food ended up making a lot of us sick and we were very disappointed with our christmas dinner.

I don't get all of the bad reviews. The night I went there was a great experience. First, they have 2 menus. One a normal menu. The other a "special" menu. Of course, the special menu has the more authentic dishes. I started a bamboo steamer of har gao. It was fresh, the skin was thin and stretchy, which is good. The dumplings were also very large. Must be top 10 har gao I've had worldwide. Not bad of a start. Then I had 2 dishes. One was pea leaf shoots sautéed with garlic. I also had a special seafood hotpot. It has a few special things in there aside from the seafood including duck feet webbing. The interior is a bit interesting. 2 floors of seating. Typical traditional dark wood and lots of red. Kind of feels like a nice Chinese restaurant! Overall, it's a great authentic Cantonese Chinese restaurant in the heart of London's Chinatown. If you were to stop in one place to say you ate in Chinatown, I'd definitely put this place on the short list.

I liked everything. All the fried stuff does not have heavy fried taste. The noodles are interesting. The duck was excellent. The pork was excellent. Fried rice is not greasy st all. It's white rice lightly tossed with meats and egg. Jasmine tea. Get the Dim Sum which ends at 5 pm!! Pork dumplings are the best I ever had. Service is very good to the exception of removing empty plates from table. They won't remove until you're done with everything. FYI. They have birds nest and shark fin.

We went for lunch and order several dim sum. They were very good. The servicer was polite and we sat apart from other diners. I would recommend this place who visit Chinatown in London.

Prawn and lychee - super weird combo

This is one of those places you regret eating in. Food is expensive, greasy and you leave feeling kind of gross. We went for Chinese New Year so everywhere along the China town strip was rammed packed. After waiting for around 20 minutes for a table we were seated on the third floor of the restaurant (this place is massive!). We ordered the duck curry (super salty), the ginger chicken (meh), the prawn and lychee in wine sauce (which didn't taste like anything except hot lychee - super weird to eat), some rice and a veggie dish. Service was extremely slow that day but understandable because of CNY. Luckily my mum understood Cantonese because hardly any of the waitresses could speak English. They were super friendly once they knew how to communicate with you though. The bill came up to an extortionate £30 per person considering the food is pretty much the same as any standard Chinese takeaway. Would not recommend :s

Octopus satay... pretty tasty, with a tiny bit of heat.

Okay, first I have to say going on Chinese New Year weekend with all the celebrations and footfall in Chinatown, I believe food can be below par on the whole street. But I was pleasantly surprise. I expected dire service, I mean it still wasn't great, but I've experienced far, far worse on this street and think it's part of the parcel with Chinatown. (And already having service charge included) So let's get to it... joined a long queue outside and was only waiting 10 mins before we were seated. Had to ask for a menu. Waiter comes to take a drink order and realises we haven't been give a drinks menu. We have a tsingtao each, which was £3 for a 330ml can. Ordering was fun... A form which you mark against the dishes you want. Had to grab a guy to take the order, he advised it's the only opportunity to order, no add ons, probs because it was busy but I guess good to know. Food arrived as and when it was ready, i'm not a dim sum know - it - all so it was rather hit and miss (as I ordered dishes I wasn't sure I'd like, just to try) but I did enjoy the deep fried prawn toast, vietnamese rolls, octopus satay and mixed seafood rice. I didn't enjoy the hueng rolls; they were a bit to glupy for my liking and the pork steamed dumpings weren't great. All in all a much better experience than my last Chinese new year in Chinatown. Bill was £39.30 including service charge. Put £40 down and the guy never came back with my change. Rather cheeky but I wasn't going to cry over 70p. Shame someone didn't look after our table and serve us properly. I was always looking around to ask for something or other. One Waiter wished me happy new year on the way out which was nice. I would go back - which is a statement!! Next time I'd know what to order and really enjoy it all. Oh the dragon came in from the street and danced in the restaurant - that was a treat.

    Liquid custard bun

Here is a bog-standard Chinese restaurant in the middle of Chinatown; the exterior and staircase may look grand but the plates and bowls are plain white, the service is a little lacking and the toilets are not well signposted (the men's toilets misleadingly has a logo of a woman and a man on the door). Nevertheless, the food is acceptable; they provide sizeable portions of dim sum, all looks fine enough and makes for a satisfying meal. (P.S. The custard bun is the lucrative kind with warm liquid custard oozing from the centre - not available everywhere but a delight to savour when you do find it.)

Nice restaurant but not excellent. The crispy duck was the lone standout, the rest if the food was only fair. The service was very friendly.

Dim sum in London? Yes, absolutely! If you know where to go…read more.. Just like So Cal, the best Chinese restaurants in London are not located in Chinatown. Royal China is in the Hyde Park area, across from the northwest corner of the park (Princess Diana Memorial Playground). It is literally just steps away from two tube stations -- Queensway on the Central Line or Bayswater on the District or Circle Lines - so you can easily get there from almost anywhere in central London. The dim sum was legit and comparable to some of the top players in the San Gabriel Valley. I was particularly impressed by some of the dishes that are hard to find outside of Hong Kong. FRIED MINCED CUTTLEFISH BALLS: Even some of the best dim sum places in the SGV don't offer this or can't make it right. But this was perfectly 5 stars! The batter was light, and the minced cuttlefish filling had a good consistency and bounciness. The cuttlefish filling was mixed with some chopped water chestnuts which was the authentically correct Cantonese recipe. It was delicious and without even a hint of fishiness (GREAT!) PAPER WRAPPED PRAWNS WITH SESAME SEEDS: This is another bold and hard to find item. The wrapping tasted like bean curb wraps and it was deep fried. The prawn tasted fresh and again, without a hint of fishiness. A generous sprinkle of sesame seeds added the final touch to this delicious and creative dim sum plate. TURNIP CAKE: Pan-fried to a nice golden brown, these slices of turnip cakes were truly my cup of tea! Without the fishy dried shrimps that so many restaurants in the SGV tend to use, this dish was like a breadth of fresh air! Instead of dried shrimps, the cakes were mixed with small pieces of cured meat (Chinese sausage) that gave it a truly Cantonese flavor. The other dishes were good but not as impressive. SIU MAI was good and was comparable to those from an average SGV place. The black bean sauce of the PORK SPARERIBS was yummy but the dish was mostly bones with little meat. We also ordered a CHINESE SAUSAGE AND CHICKEN RICE which was topped with small pieces of thigh meat that were rather bland. The only flavor for the rice came from the Chinese sausage. Overall it was still a delightful and solid 4-star dim sum experience. I will definitely be back the next time I find myself in the streets of London.

The La Mian Stall is an institution and long time resident at the the sunday market at Brick Lane…read more To find them, they are near the top of brick lane market, right underneath the underpass, closer to Shoreditch High Street Station than Aldgate East. Sundays only from some time in the morning until 5pm when the market shuts down. What you will find is a little taste of Asia in the best possible way. Hand-stretched flour noodles (la-mian) made right there before your very eyes, boiled, then served in the broth and meat accompaniments of your choosing. I had one with minced pork and 'special sauce' (who doesn't like special sauce?) and it was really good. The noodles were (obviously) really fresh, the broth was decent, and the pork bits salty and flavourful. AND all for about £5 a bowl. They also have chicken, roast pork, chilli tripe, and all kinds of available versions in addtion to some wok-fried items and really tasty dim sum. The only dim sum I tried was char siew bao, and it was legit (£1.50 for two). Plus they have a plastic table-clothed table for a few people (can maybe fit about 8 or so people) and some cheap plastic stools to sit on, so it is one of the few places along the brick lane market where you can actually sit down to eat. So authentic in its practicality and function that it makes me smile. This is also a great stall because you can stare at the guy making noodles, which is a fun show in itself. He's got skills.

** IMPORTANT NOTE: I think these guys go on holidays for 3-4 months at the beginning of the year,…read moreso don't freak out like I did when I kept visiting Brick Lane every Sunday hoping to catch them! Hopefully they'll be back soon :( ** I've been extremely picky about Chinese food since arriving in London, but luckily, this little La Mian stall under the bridge at Brick Lane has got it right! Fresh hand pulled noodles (la mian), swimming in a bowl of broth with your choice of roast duck, chicken, minced pork, and a few other variations. They also serve up other small dim sum items, such as pork buns, shrimp dumplings (har gow), pork dumplings (shiu mai), spring rolls, etc. I've tried their roast chicken leg, which is very good. The broth that they use is a mixture of soy, chicken (possibly beef) bouillon stock powder, plus a few other things. I think the broth could be better, but for the quantity I get, and by London standards - there's not much else to complain about! I've also had their tan tan noodles, which came with 5 or 6 pork shu mai. The shu mai was alright, I don't think they make this, and it was in a spicy peanutty soup. I've had proper tan tan noodles before, and this kind of missed the mark. Tasty in general, yes.. but doesn't really resonate a true bowl of tan tan noodles. i think I'm just gonna stick with normal noodles in a basic broth + meat! As for seating, there's a little table with a few small stools, but good luck getting a seat unless you're on your own! There's also a huge jar of chili oil on the table too, so don't forget to drizzle some over your noodles before taking off. The cost is very reasonable, especially for the quantity that you get. I think it runs you anywhere from £5.50-£7 per bowl, and even though they don't look THAT big - don't let it deceive you, as you will literally have to roll away. In Chinatown, a crappy bowl of noodles will cost you about £6, plus their "discretionary" (translation: mandatory) service charge. However, be prepared to wait for your food! Its awesome watching the noodle man do his thang, but with everyone standing around watching, its hard to figure out where to queue, and if people are even waiting in the queue. I believe this is a 2-man show, and while I get that they are popular and I'm sure they're popping out as many orders as they can - we waited 45 minutes for 4 bowls of noodles, which is a bit ridiculous. I think if they had a 3rd person in there, it would really speed things up. In any case though, if you have a lazy Sunday, get in line :)
