Golden Sabre Academy - Fencing Clubs Near Me - San Marcos, California

I have been involved in fencing in variety of capacities on and off for about 40 years. Visited GSA last weekend. Very impressed with facilities and location. Close to the freeway, many stores/restaurants nearby. The salle itself puts safety and comfort of fencers first. There are separate well appointed rooms for parents, kids, homework doing students, etc. Coaching is on very high level, the club has produced in short time a few national event medalists. I think it's enough to say that even adults come here to practice their fencing skills. We came here with my brother and were immediately welcomed by Sergey and Sergey's wife. We were impressed by the equipment and Sergey's skills as a teacher and as a fencer. Kids absolutely love him and look up to him. Not every child is talented and not every child has was it takes to become good at this sport but some do and I think here you'll truly find out because your child will be in hands of a professional. read more

The staff here does not understand customer service. I went to watch my youngest son in his first fencing competition. When the national anthem started to play, my older son wasn't paying attention and stayed seated for the first several seconds of the song. We nuddged him and told him to stand up...which he immediately did. When the national anthem was completed, the coach that runs the Golden Sabre Academy stormed across the room and said: "you're son is a terrible American. I'm from Russia, and I love this country more than your son does!" My husband is a Service Disabled Veteran of the Marine Corps Infantry. He tried to explain that our son didn't mean to offend anyone, and his response was, "I don't care! All I know is you're son hates this country!" We continued to watch as that coach walked around yelling at pretty much every child that was standing near something he owned like everyone was out to break something such as the inexpensive mirrors on the wall. His wife also took a Dixie sized cup from my son's friend's hand and told them they had to pay a $1 before having any water. It was very hot with no fans or a/c so another parent went and bought waters to hand out. I would not recommend this club to anyone. read more

My son has been fencing at Golden Sabre Academy for five months. I cannot say enough positive things about this club. Sergey is a firm but fair coach. He expects hard work and encourages every fencer to do their best both on and off the strip. The facility is top notch with plenty of space and equipment and membership fees are unbelievably affordable. We have been coming to the Golden Sabre Academy for about six months. Our daughter has transformed under the coaching and camaraderie fostered by Coach Sergey. Her physical fitness level and skill in fencing and other sports has increased dramatically as a result of the regular exercise and lessons. Mentally, she has aquired greater focus. The facilities are comfortable, clean, and prepared for classes and competitions. All members and families are friendly and supportive, especially with the newer members. My daughter started in November 2014 with the 3 free session trial and she liked the whole mask and sabre experience. Fencing is giving her a lot of confidence. Sergey is a tough coach but everything he does is in Pro of your children. You can leave your children with confidence everyone adults and kids are respectful plus the club has video cameras. The coach doesn't demand you to buy the equipment right away and he will allow you to use the club equipment for several weeks. And this is an A++. read more

Our son has been fencing at Golden Sabre Academy for a few months now, and he loves it. He has just had his first competition, and the amount of confidence he has gained is just amazing. Sergey is a demanding but kind coach that cares about our son's character as much as he does fencing. The facilities are great too. There is a room for parents to relax and watch their children fence on a big screen television, there is a room for the kids to relax and play while they are waiting to be picked up, and there is a kitchen/breakroom where everyone can store and eat their snacks. On top of that, Sergey and Marina communicate all the time with parents via email and in person. I highly recommend Golden Sabre Academy. read more

totally unprofessional and bad training skills the trainer is rude and very aggressive with kids My son who is 10 years got hit by a sabre on his elbow the trainer kept yelling on him calling him drama queen in front of the class which i would understand if he was acting but he could not stretch or flex his arm for three days after ! not only he yelled on him he pulled My girlfriend after the class and used the worst language describing My son literally as a( P..s..Y) I mean he did use the word she was shocked of the language he used as she has a master's degree in child education. I went to talk to him in a very rude way he responded that his conversation with My Girlfriend is an adult and he could use any language he wants and if I do not agree he will terminate my son from the fencing club and he did send me an email with the termination next day, this is not to mention the following he is a bad trainer who is always smoking in front of the door and inside the building , he never attend his students competitions and very rude. As he announces it is a profit free organization I'm going to seek a legal advise. read more

She is getting into shape, learning a skill, and making new friendships. She is also looking forward to competing. Sergey is a serious and knowledgeable coach, and we appreciate this. GSA is a top notch sabre fencing club. Students receive excellent training and enjoy working hard individually and together under Coach Sergey's leadership. Coach is very accomplished in his own career as a fencer, has great teaching skills and credentials, and has a passion for this sport which is contagious. Coach trains students to think strategically and prepare mentally, not just perform tactically. He is firm, holding students to high expectations, but he is also generous with encouraging words, knowing when each student is trying his or her best.
