I have gone to Golden Seashell twice now to repair a gold chain that I wear everyday. Due to the fact that I have always had pets, I tend to break my chains on a regular basis. Golden Seashell is located on the main drag of Newport in Ocean Beach a couple of blocks from the water. For that reason, parking can be a bit challenging, but it is also convenient to stop by on my way to pick up lunch or do something else at the beach. It appears to be a one-man shop where the owner does all of the repairs. Both times, drop off and pick up have been quick and easy. Both times, he has taken a quick look at my chain and given me the price and timeframe. Both times, he repaired the chain successfully. The price is reasonable in comparison with what I have paid in other places in the past. The only reason I can't give five stars is that the timeframe given is one to two weeks. This last time, he took just over a week. In other parts of town, I have had some places fix it within a day, some, even within an hour. I imagine he is probably busy with a lot of other repairs. However, to have someone fix my jewelry locally at a reasonable price is a pretty good deal, and I will be back to Golden Seashell. read more

I went to have the watch battery changed on my late father's watch. Apparently, there was some complication because the repairman (who I believe is the owner) loudly announced that it was "horrendous watch" and that "he hoped he would never see it again" to everyone in the room. He went on to describe in detail why it was such a bad design. My son was with me and we were both shocked. I've had the battery changed on this watch twice before and never had a problem. This leads me to believe that the issue was one not of watch design, but the ability of the repairer. I was also disappointed to see that the back of the watch was not aligned correctly. It's incredible that he would make such disparaging remarks about someone's personal jewelry for all to hear. I chose this store because I like to support local business. Sandwiched between tacky tourist shops, thrift stores and cheap clothing retailers, Golden Seashell is very easy to miss...but it really stands out as a unique and special shop that is a must visit when you're in OB. I found it on Yelp when i was looking for a jeweler who could change the batteries on multiple watches. I called around and this was the cheapest and had good Yelp reviews so I gave it a shot since I knew I would be in the area. I'm glad I discovered Golden Seashell! Not only did the owner change my batteries at an excellent price (two batteries cost $8 and another $6 -- whereas a Hillcrest shop quoted me $10.95 a piece and a North Park chain store would have been $8.95 each)....but the store is filled with treasures! There was a ton of unique jewelry with authentic stones and unique designs that I don't usually see in department stores or online, and they were all really well priced. Also, there is a huge collection of ancient coins, including from the Roman, Byzantine, Greek and Spanish empires that are an absolutely sight to see. They also have the legit "OB" logo in pendants in sterling silver or gold. I would definitely come back to buy gifts or a beautiful necklace for myself! read more

When I offhand mentioned having a coin mounted as my engagement ring, Scott was all about it! Very courteous and knowledgeable, my ring was ready in about a week, as I recall. I had a sort of nebulous idea of what I wanted; plain, silver, interesting. I didn't want prongs to get snapped off or anything to be remotely breakable. When we came back in to pick it up, it was *exactly* what I was looking for. Have brought watches in to have the batteries replaced - yes, some of us still wear watches! The most recent one was a waterproof Ripcurl watch for surfing, and they even had the batteries on-hand, so could replace it while we waited for just about $10. A few months ago I took my new Seiko watch to get the bracelet sized here. I took it here because it was a holiday and it was one of the only jewelry stores open and was quoted the most reasonable price by phone. They did the job quickly, however even when it was being done I got the feeling they didn't know what they were doing. The bracelet was fine until I got home when it almost immediately came apart. With only minimal online search Apparently certain bracelets use a different than normal pinning system with pins-and-collars, and that they didn't put the collars back in to keep the sizing pin in place. Special equipment (like 15 bucks on amazon) is required to size the bracelet. I wish they would have told me they didn't know how to do it to start. After a few days I just removed the bracelet and put on a leather strap and the bracelet sits in a drawer in pieces currently. In the future I will buy the tools online and watch a youtube video rather than take it back here to get it fixed, or take it to somewhere that knows what they are doing. I am giving them 2 starts because they were cheap, quick, and open, all good things that for simple jobs would be fine. read more
