We brought a 2.66-carat family heirloom diamond to Gilmore Family Jewelers to design and mount a…read morecustom engagement ring. This was an extremely meaningful family stone connected to our engagement. The diamond was originally purchased in 2002 for approximately $16,000 and had been tested multiple times over the years, including at home, consistently indicating that it was a natural diamond. During both the initial design evaluation and intake process, the jeweler carefully inspected the stone, complimented its quality and appearance, and documented it twice on receipts as a diamond with no laser inscription. When the completed ring was returned to us, we immediately noticed the center stone appeared different from the original family diamond. The color and reflection looked noticeably different, including more green than we remembered seeing previously. We later learned that this type of appearance is commonly associated with moissanite. We sought independent evaluations from two gemologists, one of which occurred in the presence of Gary Gilmore himself. Both gemologists identified the returned stone as laboratory-created moissanite bearing a laser inscription. What made this situation especially concerning is that Gary Gilmore's own website advertises expertise in jewelry evaluation, custom jewelry work, and heirloom pieces. Both independent gemologists separately expressed surprise that a jeweler with Gary Gilmore's level of experience and reputation would document the same stone twice as a diamond and later identify it as moissanite. After these evaluations, the jeweler changed his position and claimed that the stone may have been misidentified from the beginning and that the recorded dimensions and weight supposedly could not correspond to a natural diamond. However, both gemologists disputed that explanation and advised us that measurements alone do not conclusively determine whether a stone is diamond or moissanite. Our original family diamond was never returned. In addition to the original value of the diamond, we also paid approximately $2,500 for the custom engagement ring using this stone. This situation has delayed our engagement and caused significant emotional and financial stress. Because of the seriousness of the discrepancy between the jeweler's own written documentation and the stone that was returned to us, we have filed a small claims lawsuit and are pursuing the matter formally. We could never recommend working with Gary Gilmore or Gilmore Family Jewelers for heirloom or high-value jewelry based on our experience.

Mark Beauchamp of Jewelry by Design made my anniversary + wedding ring dream come true…read more When I got married, I chose to wear only my engagement ring, since it was so beautiful both on top and in the intricate detail along the sides. I never cared for the wedding band it had originally been paired with. I decided I'd design a custom wedding band for a future anniversary, if I ever felt moved to. Years passed, and I never did, until after a trip to Italy for a major anniversary, when I finally decided to take ten diamonds from a family ring and design two jackets, one for each side of my engagement ring, with five diamonds apiece. Given the shape of my original ring and the need to fit five diamonds on either side, it ended up being a fairly large, striking design. Mark understood exactly what I wanted right from the start. He created a mold so I could visualize the design and confirm it was truly what I envisioned. He also suggested that the center ring remain a separate, detachable piece rather than being fused into one unit, since he felt the three rings would sit better together that way. I came in to see one of the side rings once it was made with the diamonds set, so I could approve the design before he continued. From there, he worked remarkably fast. I had my center ring back within days, and the complete set within two weeks. I ended up with exactly what I wanted. I later had the rings soldered together, since I use my hands constantly and wanted everything to stay perfectly aligned. Mark completed this task with expert precision as well, and at no extra cost. I knew going in that adding the side jackets would mean my center ring wouldn't stand out quite as prominently on its own, but that was a tradeoff I was happy to make for the finished design. From start to finish, Mark both validated my vision and offered thoughtful suggestions along the way. He also did beautiful fine engraving on the sides of the rings to help everything match seamlessly. It's a ring I love wearing every day, and my husband loves it, too. I want to thank Mark for his incredible attention to detail and the tremendous value he provided. His rates were more than reasonable for the level of craftsmanship and care that went into this ring for our special anniversary.

The gentleman that is at the store is very welcoming and has always treated us with respect. However, I purchased a silver necklace May 30, 2025 and it has turned a dark color. I reached out to the phone number and the email that is listed on the website and on the business card and I've had a bad experience. The phone number that I texted only reached out to me once and asked me for pictures of the receipt and pictures of the necklace which I've provided. After that, they stop responding they don't acknowledge my text. The text show as received, but no one has replied back. I try emailing and no response via email either. At first, when I would call the phone number the line would ring but now it just takes me straight to voicemail. I tried calling with a different phone and the phone number rings but they don't pick up. At this point, I am very disappointed at the fact that a store of this caliber would have such poor communication skills with a committed client like I am. I just need guidance on what to do with the necklace or how to clean it. I am going to attach pictures of the necklace and the receipt to show that the necklace was not cheap. I have gone to Golden Seashell twice now to repair a gold chain that I wear everyday. Due to the…read morefact that I have always had pets, I tend to break my chains on a regular basis. Golden Seashell is located on the main drag of Newport in Ocean Beach a couple of blocks from the water. For that reason, parking can be a bit challenging, but it is also convenient to stop by on my way to pick up lunch or do something else at the beach. It appears to be a one-man shop where the owner does all of the repairs. Both times, drop off and pick up have been quick and easy. Both times, he has taken a quick look at my chain and given me the price and timeframe. Both times, he repaired the chain successfully. The price is reasonable in comparison with what I have paid in other places in the past. The only reason I can't give five stars is that the timeframe given is one to two weeks. This last time, he took just over a week. In other parts of town, I have had some places fix it within a day, some, even within an hour. I imagine he is probably busy with a lot of other repairs. However, to have someone fix my jewelry locally at a reasonable price is a pretty good deal, and I will be back to Golden Seashell.
