Quite a beautiful and peaceful place! We stopped in for dinner to celebrate my birthday had a great experience. Our server was great and super charismatic. She made us feel quite at home. The dining room felt like a rustic lodge or chalet, with large windows for easy viewing of the surrounding landscape. Each course was delicious, full of so many flavors and textures. I had the Beef Wellington and my wife had the Skirt Steak. Both cuts were cooked precisely as ordered. Dessert was the Lychee & Coconut dish. After desk check in, finding our "Gwenivere" required our Inn Keeper Mr Radin to show us that our #15 room was hidden behind an unmarked outer door. Our Gwenivere "suite" needs for updating to justify the price. A separate bedroom from the living makes it an actual suite. Replace the massive old world style estate bed, armoire. and supersoft broken down mattress. Bed stands need USB re-charging ports. Replace cheap plastic walk-in shower insert with contemporary faux stone panels. Update the website. The room views are parking lots, not river water. Ditch the kitchenette. Who does their own cooking in a $400 pet nite "suite". The Edge restaurant was ok but not great. The soup was very good. Squash I think. Seasoned nicely. The strawberry avocado salad was innovative but lackluster taste. I think they forgot the vinaigrette. The Chilean Sea Bass was thoroughly broiled perfectly. Very savory cooked mushroom and vegetable base. Shrimp in angel hair pasta was spoiled by a heavily salted creamy tomato sauce. The dessert of lychee coconut mousse was good. Very tasty flavors. Expecting an Inn of this rating Notably to see prime beef and pork dishes. Galena is in the Midwestern Heartland that produces the finest corn fed prime beef and pork in the world. This menu features grass fed lean meats in the Beef Wellington, Veal Strip Loin, and Elk Chops. If you like very lean meat cooked rare in order to retain any juices at all, this part of the menu is for you. Why people waste money on tasteless meat is a mystery. Free breakfast was ok. Had dinner for 6 at the chef's table in the kitchen. The owners were so incredibly welcoming in greeting our group at the door! Chef Brandon was very polite and hospitable while we asked questions throughout our meal despite being busy throughout dinner. Kitchen was incredibly clean and staff was on point from our server Dale to the owners stopping by to check on us throughout our meal. We ordered from the current seasonal menu (chicken, salmon (pictured), wagyu beef and steaks for entrees). All of the dishes were beautiful, hot and perfectly prepared and the flavors blended so well together. Highly recommend. A profoundly embarrassing and disappointing experience. I made a reservation for my wife's birthday. She has been missing unique American fare so I decided to make the 1.5 hour trip to go to the Goldmoor. She was ecstatic once she saw the menu, as was I. We arrived and were greeted by a gentleman (perhaps the owner, which makes recalling the interaction even more infuriating), who asked us upon arrival if we were sisters. I politely said no. He then went on to say, "I could have sworn you were sisters." After saying a second time we weren't, he said, "are you sure?" By the time, I was over the evening already and we hadn't even been shown our table yet. There are three profoundly important questions for the owner (?) to consider: First, is this a standardized question for every twosome that walks through the door? Put differently, I would be curious if the two couples around us were asked the same question. If not, then what is the explanation for asking two women if they are related and then more or less badgering them about it when they said no the first time? Second, this man then went around and asked every table around ours if they were ok and enjoying their time. He skipped our table every time he walked around. What is the explanation for that behavior? Third, what has happened in the past that has led someone to believe that they are exempt from making an impact on others with their behavior? This ridiculous interaction set the mood and tone of our entire $200.00 meal. Unfortunately, we do not support or recommend places that have staff who carry out microaggressions. This was an embarrassing and uncalled for interaction. My wife and I just wanted to celebrate a birthday, but instead we were met with weird questions about if we were related, then not believed when we said no. This place is interpersonally gross and I regret not walking out the second this person opened his mouth and failed to apologize. For reference, my wife is from the Middle East and I'm a white red head from the Midwest. Two women walk into a restaurant. That's it. That's the sentence. Grow up. read more

I would love to stay here but even if you are staying elsewhere, come here for dinner. The restaurant is definitely some of the more fine dining in the area. Very intimate dining room. The locale is awesome as is the waitstaff. Dale was very attentive. Small selection of domestic and imported beer. Mixed drinks were well done & enjoyable. There were no side dishes to the entrees listed on the menu. One of us asked for mash potatoes and it was provided. Asparagus soup of the day was very tasty. Our table of four allowed us to sample each others' entrees. Ahi tuna was tasty and presented well. The beef Wellington was ok but not stellar as I would have expected. Halibut is hard to find in the Midwest so we were looking forward to it. Though I believe servings are by weight my portion was less than half the size of my fellow diner. Another plate of Ahi went past our table and I noticed it too was larger than mine(?). Our table's conversation was lively so I let it pass. On the drive home we discussed the presentation of the halibut as well as the curious side garnish. Both of us thought that though the fish steak was flaky its taste and garnish were underwhelming. The Goldmoor Inn is just fabulous!!!! From the beautiful facilities, which draws you in, to the care of every detail that has gone into the place. When you drive into the grounds, you truly feel like you are in another world. A castle with cottages set along the rolling hills of Galena/Mississippi River, is just stunning and brings calmness to the spirit!! My husband and I went to the restaurant...... again, just beautiful down to the place settings and the linens on the table. Most importantly, the food was to die for. This use to be an amazing experience from beginning to end. The service and the rooms are great. The dining experience has gone down. I've stayed at the Inn at least 7 times over the past 10 years and his gone under new ownership and they have done some great upgrades in the rooms. You still get breakfast delivered to your room at designated time but for us it showed up an hour late and the presentation was fine. But the food was really average. The dinner menu was a fraction of what it use to be as well as the portion size. The taste was also not worth the price we paid. But if you didn't know the old Goldmoor you might enjoy this version of it. read more

What has been accomplished here is rare. My husband and I came for our 20th wedding anniversary and this place continues to impress! We have been in the garden suite, where the attention to detail is meticulous. The room, comfortable, clean and beautiful. We had champagne, fresh baked cookies and a dozen roses in our room. Don't let the drive into the property scare you, it's well worth it. We decided to check out the town the first night and we enjoyed a local restaurant, let me say outright that the Inn's dinner was definitely 5 star worthy hands down. Amazing. Seriously. The menu changes, we were told, but I would bet anything of his is phenomenal. We ate dinner while watching the sunset over the hill and the Mississippi River. The Goldmoor has new ownership since my last visit and this time around, it was everything I could have hoped for. We were greeted by a friendly staff and the owner himself. It was a celebratory dinner and they graciously gave our party of 6 a private dining room. The staff was on top of everything - drinks were constantly refilled and we felt looked after without the service being overbearing. Galena isn't known as a foodie destination, but my sister in law found this place online and based on the menu and reviews, we decided to try it. I'd give this place 3.5 stars. Their website says they have a dress code, no shorts, etc. but a few people were wearing shorts and t-shirts so no need to dress up even though this is a fine dining restaurant. We were early for our reservation so we sat in the bar area and had a cocktail. They have a very small but decent wine list, limited bourbon selection, but lots of other spirits. The cocktails were just ok. The server, owners, and all other employees were very friendly. 5 stars for the service! They didn't have any specials the evening we went. They have a smallish menu but everything we tried was very good. We had the salmon tartare and burrata appetizers, both good but the salmon was excellent. For our entrees, we had the beef Wellington, great, lamb chops, terrific, and scallops, very good. The only problem we had with the food was the fact that the scallops entree only came with 3 scallops. For a main, the number of scallops we've had at other fine dining restaurants has been 6. Spent the weekend at the Goldmoor Inn as an early birthday gift. The property is simply breathtaking, our room had a private view of the Mississippi River and offered an incredibly picturesque view of the sunset over the Mississippi. The staff was so warm and welcoming and we had a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us in room upon arrival. Rita was a wealth of knowledge on the history of the property and the area. We also had dinner one evening at hotel and I ordered the Beef Wellington. I have been to the UK many times and this Beef Wellington was better than any BW I've ever had. My boyfriend and I stayed the weekend of November 16, 2018 in the Arthur Suite. The suite was gorgeous. We loved staying in the room and struggled to want to leave to visit Galena. Breakfast delivered to the room really helped spark the romantic weekend for two and I highly recommend it. The dinner at the Inn requires a reservation and is pricey but worth every penny. I got the crab cakes with scallops and it was the best I've ever had next to places fresh off the sea. Two meals plus drinks was over $150. We also did a couples massage after breakfast on Saturday morning and the masseuses did a phenomenal job. They were kind, focused on the right areas, and we enjoyed it. If you're looking to save money, the massages are a pretty penny so might not be for you but if you have the money to spare I'd recommend it. My boyfriend and I saved up for the weekend expecting things to be expensive so we were prepared. The couples massage was $210. Overall, we 100% plan to return but will have to save again for a weekend like that. However, it's now one of our favorite weekends in our memories because it was gorgeous and we got to take care of us in a beautiful place with an exceptional staff. read more

We had an amazing dining experience at the Goldmoor Inn last Saturday. The inn was dressed up for the holidays and it looked right out of a Hallmark movie. The dining room was beautiful and the service and food experience were just outstanding. We had the short ribs for two; the presentation and quality of the meal was one of the best ever. The owner, Slobo took us outside to the amazing new patio overlooking the Mississippi River. We cannot wait to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio viewing the sunset next spring and summer. We got married here 10 years ago and returned to celebrate our special anniversary recently. The Goldmoor Inn will always have a special place in our hearts and therefore needless to say it also gets 'puppy points' and we overlook a few things.... But it is, after all, a 4 star Hotel and you expect things to be on point, especially with that price of $400+ per night. We stayed in one of the cabins and even though they are adorable, you can tell things are not maintained/cleaned really well. Towels have seen better days, our bathroom mat had a weird dark stain and over all you get the feeling it is not properly cleaned. You get complimentary breakfast delivered to the room and you are being asked to call the front desk and let them know what time you wish to get your breakfast. Which we did. The first morning it came 10 minutes later and the second morning they forgot us entirely, even though we had the owner himself on the phone the evening before. We had to call and remind them. Half hour later than expected it came to the cabin. And the way they bring the breakfast was another thing.... Its all packed in a big bag, the juice was spilled both times and they just put to bag on the floor...hmmmm There were a few other things, all minor, but for a high class Hotel like this one not expectable. They should definitely start looking and taking care of details. read more

I don't review a lot, basically only if something was stellar or horrid. Thankfully, this was beyond stellar. The scene: 8 year anniversary, planned to camp, forecast of a weekend of rain, days away. Naturally, I scramble and pray something good is out there. Lo and behold, The Goldmoor. Very expensive but I take the risk. The result? An unforgettable weekend and an elated Lady. When you go in town and people ask where you're staying, and you mention the Goldmoor, expect to have women swoon at the romance you two must be living in. I had no idea, the whole area did though and they know you're in for a treat. 1- aesthetic: 9.5. Think oldschool Europe with modern touches and an absolutely stellar elevated grounds overlooking diving birds and butterflies above the Mississippi at sunset. It could have only been better if their was a live band playing string instruments on the premises haha. 2- accommodations. 9.2. To go above you'd have to shell out an extra $100 a night. Massive rooms, a giant bathtub jacuzzi in the room itself, not even in the bathroom. Bathroom is massive. Each room has a full kitchen. The bed was wonderful (California king). 3- dining: dinner 9.5, complementary breakfast 7.6. I've been around the world and tastes it along the way. I actually keep a list of my best dining experiences since childhood, this cracked into the top 20. 4- staff: 8 5- owners 9.5. Charming German couple who take such pride in what they do it permeates through the walls. Every detail is them. They talk to you and not at you. They are friendly and the accent adds to it haha. 6- Galena: 8.8. Didn't know what to expect, not what I expected, vastly superior. Think Appalachian terrain with educated friendly people. Civil war era downtown construction along the Mississippi. Great shops and food. All local, all ran with love and passion. Do it. Or don't. Genuinely a mistake if you don't though. read more

We stopped in here for dinner after hiking in the area. The food is absolutely outstanding! The chef prepares the food perfectly. Every plate we had was amazing. Overview: The Goldmoor Inn is located 10 minutes from the little wine and antique town of Galena along the Mississippi River. Its a beautiful and private estate with luxurious dining options, spa packages, and private cabins/cottages. Our experience: My husband and I selected the Goldmoor to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We are in our 30s. This is our 2nd time visiting Galena (last time we stayed in town). We treated ourselves to the English Cottage for 4 nights, the cottage was a private guesthouse on the property with a King bed, whirlpool tub, large shower, and screened in porch facing the river. Pros: The owners are very friendly and personable. The estate and grounds are gorgeous. The room was clean throughout the stay. Complimentary breakfast, coffee, and afternoon cookies, made fresh daily. The breakfasts were unique each day which was exciting for us. They cater to dietary restrictions or allergies. High end restaurant on site with top quality dishes. Offers spa packages. 10 minute drive to Galena, wineries, and outdoor activities. Cons: For a Galena Inn, the restaurant had a small wine list (see photo) and no local wines. There was no offered happy hour (complimentary wines or charcuterie boards). The afternoon cookies were nice, but we would have preferred other options (fruit, cheese, etc). There were no blackout curtains in the room. We traveled from out of state and our sleep schedules were altered. We would have loved an option to darken the room in the mornings. Turning on the fireplace in the room is not an option for summertime. This was not stated on the website description and gave us a false impression we could have a fireplace atmosphere in the evenings. The river is separated from the cottage by a train track and horse ranch (a massive stable) which is a little distracting from the view. The massages we received were mid-line quality. One of the masseuse wore rubber gloves the entire time which was weird and not as enjoyable. Additional information: If you plan to drink in Galena, especially in the evening, the back roads to the Goldmoor are small, dark, and winding. Lots of wildlife. The English Cottage is private and secluded from the main house, which is excellent, however we didn't have much interaction from the owners or other guests and not a lot of information about additional services or local activities. Suggestions for improvement: Offer additional services for guests and more information, even those in the cabins and cottages. Offer activity packages for local activities (wine tasting,, horseback riding, ziplining, etc.) and diner reservations for other restaurants-- and make the arrangements for the guests. Provide happy hour options for guests to meet and mingle, and a better outdoor seating area for drinking. Please add darkening curtains. Also please add signs for cottages for "do not disturb" and eco friendly options like "no new towels needed". read more

We had dinner reservations for 8pm on a Saturday. We arrived shortly before our reservation but there were no parking spots. Not out front and not behind the building. It was 3 degrees outside, we nowhere to park. My wife went inside to find out where we could park but the "manager" seemed unconcerned. Needless to say we left without parking or eating. Ordered Foie gras appetizer which was fine. Then ordered soup of the day for both of us and beef Wellington and said we were going to share. Waitress said there was an $8 shared plate charge which I didn't feel was necessary with an appetizer and soups. Did give her a strange look but she still added $8 even after also ordering a dessert. Food was fine but there is a lot better in Downtown Galena. And to top it off my dessert was some sort of key lime pie thing that was basically two solid, hard as a rock graham crackers with key lime filling in the middle. Couldn't finish it as it was kind of gross. Poor attempt at remaking the 'last' piece of key lime pie. read more

Whatever the appeal is of the on-site restaurant, we certainly were not impressed by our stay at the Inn. While we had a pleasant check-in, it basically went downhill from there with one dumb problem after another the whole weekend. Here's a quick overview: *Room didn't seem like the one we booked; we later learned they put us in a different room altogether and the room we booked is already occupied. *Staff member blamed Expedia for the mixup--seems wrong rooms being booked is a known problem nobody has gotten around to fixing. *Our "suite"--the one we didn't book--was next door to two heavily trafficked porta-potties set up for a wedding and looked out onto a parking lot. No tranquility or views for us! *We also learned that none of the "suites" are suites in the Merriam-Webster/traditional sense of having more than one room. They're all one big room with a bathroom (and quizzically, a giant jacuzzi in the corner). This was a problem because we expected a second small area for our infant daughter to sleep in. Looks like we're sitting in silence after 7:00 or sitting in the plastic chairs outside the door until we go to bed. *Being a B&B, breakfast is included in small restaurant or delivered to room. Just have to call to request delivery. First morning we call, and then call again, and then a third time. Each time no answer. Give up and eat cold pizza. Get a call two hours later noting we never collected our breakfast and asking if we still wanted it. *Overarching sense of nobody knowing what was going on at any given time. For example, we had the following actual interactions with actual humans employed in the hospitality industry: "Do you do room service?" We normally do. "Are you doing it today?" I'm not sure...let me check...okay we are. "Is there a menu in the room?" Nope, don't ask me why. We have one at the front desk. "Okay, I'll come up there." "Here's our order--we have a sleeping baby in the room though, can we just come pick it up?" Nope, we don't do that. "Can you maybe come to the exterior door of the room, where we'll wait to meet you?" How about I just call the room when we're on the way? "Um . . . that would wake up the baby." Okay, we'll come to the door, no problem. *Knock, knock, knock* . . . *baby wakes up and starts crying* Room service ignored the request or it was lost somewhere between the two to three people involved in this transaction at a small country inn; ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Wife loses it. *Food was somehow cold. One appetizer, soup, entree, and dessert nearly $100. Deliverer of room service wants credit card number for order as wife storms off with food and I comfort crying baby; the same number we gave to front desk when we placed the order. Cold food actually pretty tasty. *Front desk lady apologizes but deflects blame entirely to wait staff, asking us to identify the employee who knocked on the door. We're charged full price for meal. Maybe our standards our too high. Maybe every single person we encountered had an "off" 48 hours. I don't know, but I'm not going to find out by staying here ever again. read more
