To preface, I like most things about this gym as a regular member who knows what they want to do here. The equipment is decent, members are friendly. No billing issues thus far. They could add some machines but if you don't go at 5pm you'll probably be fine. But the purpose of this review is to warn others of the awful personal "training" practices here. TL;DR there is no oversight on trainers and they do whatever they want with clients seemingly not to the clients' benefit, imo they are lying and stealing money from those who don't know any better. The ANNOYING: To say the group fitness classes are a nuisance is an under-statement. There are TWO "special" rooms that non-premium members are not allowed to use because they are reserved for classes. Sure who cares I'm not using that space anyways. But frequently the classes are held outside of these rooms and take over as much space as possible. Every Sunday morning, the turf is nearly inaccessible because a group class is being held. The turf is the only open place for members to warm up, sled push, use some of the non-machines, etc. Unless the group class should be held there. Then you have to hug the wall and watch a circus. And good luck getting any equipment because they're using all of it. The exercises they do would be easily adjustable to fit in one or both of the studios but either out of laziness or entitlement on the instructor's part, they are not. The saddest part is that the group could probably do their own thing for free outside in a park, or at least get the same benefits because I'm betting there's a big "fun" component rather than a productive one. If I was attending these classes and still couldn't do a full push-up after a year of trying, I'd be pretty upset but they don't seem to be bothered. Everyone seems to be putting in some effort but are not being set up for success which really bothers me as a former coach. If someone is struggling with form, it's the coaches job to make an adjustment or regress it to a point they can do it, not have them flop on the ground week after week expecting that maybe someday they'll be strong enough. They do not understand progression in the slightest, and all do the same thing regardless of ability to actually perform a movement. If you are a regular non-class attending member the class instructors and goers will act like they are better than you or have some protected class status, it's very odd and entitled. The PREDATORY: You get a trainer to train you and make progress toward your goals. And if they're really good, teach you enough to be successful on your own- and those things are where the "trainers" here fail. As someone with 5 years of personal training and athletic coaching experience, you are being scammed out of your money if you sign up for training in any capacity here. The "trainers" (with the exception of Whilem he's chill) do not know what they are doing, no matter how hard they will make it seem like they do. If you don't understand exercise and hire a trainer for help, that would make sense. But it is incredibly easy to seem like an expert to someone with no knowledge, which is what I believe the trainers here do. One "trainer" in-particular hides behind gimmicky exercises and big words to trick his unaware clients and disguise the fact that he doesn't have a clue how to actually train someone to make progress in the gym. I've seen people over-complicate exercise but this guy is a whole new level. He frequently invents worse versions of exercises that already exist to an absurd degree. I feel the worst for the paying clients here because it's not their fault and they don't know any better. I've heard him give exercise cues that are either completely incorrect or downright dangerous. The clients look the same as they did a year ago and still lift the same weights. Maybe they're not doing what they should be outside the gym or maybe they just aren't doing anything productive in the gym, both are the responsibility of the person they are paying to help them be successful. I'm there at the same times consistently and have seen the same stuff every week, frequently changing exercises, under-loading, and over-explaining everything to their clients, while they spend tens of minutes of their hour-long session, not working out. I have never seen a client or class attendee do a full session without poor form on something, and the "coaches" do not know how to adjust an exercise to the point where their clients can actually do it. Some of the worst form I've ever seen at this gym has been in a class or with a "trainer" and a correction is never attempted. It's shameful on them and sad to see so many people throw their money down the toilet when they think they're doing something to help themselves. If you know what you're doing, you'll be fine here. But if you don't, take your time and money elsewhere because you won't learn anything from the charlatans here. read more

This is a great spot and space for a gym although it could be cleaner it's really disappointing when you see the common areas where the clothing, supplements, and especially the seating area and tables are dirty and have not been cleaned for months so disappointing. This brand is treated so poorly, although it is still in a great space it is ill-equipped some machines they have duplicates of some of the most popular machines. They only have one. when it opened making management aware, but they have not made changes. read more

THE BIG: Pretty big and spacious gym with new equipment. On the ground floor of the Vy. Parking is inside the garage adjacent to the gym. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here on a Sunday for a Golds Fit class and the gym is massive. Note: the Golds Fit class is on the turf and not in the room on Sundays. Still a fun time! Checking in was a breeze and all the equipment smells new. Just a big open floor with nice high ceilings. Bathrooms are nice. No sauna. There is a recovery room with therabody hyperice compression pants and other cooling and heating recovery tech. Staff are super friendly and there to answer any questions. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall a really decent gym. It is a bit far from where the in-laws live but nice to come once in a while when in town. read more

Beware when you sign up for personal training sessions. They continue to charge your credit card for 6 weeks after you cancel the weekly sessions. Then they refuse to refund the overpayments. I ended up with more than 25 pre-paid sessions after I cancelled and they will take a year to use up. Security is terrible. There have been 2 killings in the building in the last month. One was on the gym floor when one member emptied his handgun into another member and the second was this week when police shot and killed another assailant in the same building complex. Gold's management has not added security at the entrance and has not taken any steps to protect their members. If I didn't have a year of prepaid training sessions for which I can't get a refund for overcharging me I would have already joined a different gym. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with the reliability of this gym. They claim to open at 7 AM on weekends, yet once again, the doors are still locked well past opening time. This is not the first time this has happened, and it's incredibly frustrating for those of us who plan our day around being here early. When signing up. They failed to mention the $99.99 annual fee that hits you after just one month of enrolling. I made sure to ask about any fees or other charges and was assured only had to pay the bi-weekly amount when I enrolled my son. "Check your contract" they said as they did not seem surprised about my call asking about this unexpected charge on my card. They did not tell me this when I signed up, they don't give you a contract when you sign up. You just sign on the pad. You will get it via email after you already out of the door getting stuck with this. Tried to cancel and get a refund with no help. Called, told me to send an email, sent the email with no answer. I got a membership 2 weeks ago, salesperson told me there's massage chairs in the recovery room that goes with my bi-weekly charge of $34.99... but they weren't massage chairs lol. He didn't give me the invite to the app, I tried again at home. I kept trying with no response til I emailed him saying I need help and was pretty much "sorry can't help you, go to customer service." So I did go to customer service just for them to ghost me practically. I have been a Gold's Gym member for over 10 years, and my last visit I asked for a towel and I was told oh I need to upgrade my membership which I believe is ridiculous as no one has ever asked me to do that. Secondly, I completely understand when there are scheduled classes going on in the specific room for other things than cycling. but there are cycles on the corner of that room, and are not accessible, and you have to sometimes wait because there are classes going on back to back. The gym needs to take those cycles out of that specific room and put it somewhere gym members can utilize them as you can't ride a cycle while another class is in session. Thank you! read more

I have been a member at this gym for a few years and it has the same standard equipment at a very convenient location. Since this gym is relatively smaller than other franchise locations, when there are changes, I notice it. For example, the changes in the staff. Everyone is very pleasant! I do not experience discomfort with gym related requests to any of the staff. That is relevant because I have been a member at this gym for a few years and I did not always feel that way. And today, a manager put in the effort to remember my name. Very cool. More about the offerings at the gym: ample lockers available, sauna and showers, and overall clean facility. Last time I checked, I think this location still offers plenty of workout classes too. These classes are included in the membership. There might be a smaller schedule following the COVID-19 pandemic. That's all I know; I don't attend them personally. If anyone is COVID-19 cautious, I will say that 90+% of the people in the facility (including the employees) do not wear masks. Depending on the time you choose to workout, there's plenty of room to social distance. There is also ample hand sanitizer set up throughout the workout floor except for this one spot by the windows. read more

Worst gym ever! While they were open, they couldn't control the people who worked out, from occupying the machines for long periods of time. Fast forward, they closed their Reston location to open another. Meanwhile, I couldn't work out for months, and they had no problem taking my money! I tried so many times to talk with the manager or a regional manager, and I was ignored, so I finally canceled my account because they still hadn't opened after more than 5 months. I have the documentation to prove I canceled, yet they continued to go after me and sent me to collections! They even took money from my bank account after I canceled. Unbelievable that they can't seem to get they act together. Do not sign a contract with them. They will think you are committed for life and will never let you out! They closed the gym near my house and I was told that if I didn't transfer the membership to their new location (literally 10x farther away), it would cancel automatically. I let it cancel and switched to Worldgate, which is a MUCH better gym, by the way. However they closed with no notice (another member showed me a notice hanging in the gym on the last day open) and the new facilities took too long to open so I cancelled. I contacted ABC (the billing company) on 3 occasions and told them that I was cancelling - ABC rep said that was fine, but told me I had to give 30 days notice ($40) - which I had no problem with. However 4 months later I received a collection notice for $180. I contacted this company and they told me it was because I didn't put it in writing (wasn't asked to) and it was for the balance of the contract period. Seriously Golds Gym - you were awesome, except for the lack of closure notice. Why, oh why are you still using these sheisty companies with their weird tactics for squeezing money out of people. My husband and I have been dealing with a billing issue with Gold's Gym DC Metro for several months. When the Reston gym closed in May and was supposed to open in its new location in June, I put my membership and personal training on hold. It is now September, and the new gym is not open yet. Even though I put my personal training on hold while waiting for the new location to open, Gold's Gym billed me for the time the Reston location was closed - services I didn't receive. To make matters worse, they submitted my account to their collection agency (Aldous & Associates). It took multiple phone calls, emails, and a personal visit to the Chantilly gym to get it resolved. It is now supposedly resolved, but I am confident I will get another email from the collection agency. RUN away from this place. Don't sign up for anything. Very dissatisfied with the Reston Gold's Gym. I recently signed up for membership and my daughter was excited to check out the new gym after school on the free week pass. We arrived to check in and she was told that you had to be 18 to use the free week pass. The staff then said if she was a full member she could come in with me to workout. So basically my daughter would need to get a full membership with zero options to see if she liked the gym before committing to the monthly fee as a student. I am pretty sure whatever liability verbiage is in the general contract could be adopted for minors to use a week pass to avoid this disappointment from Gold's Gym. read more

The franchisee is closing at the herndon clock tower and memberships are being transferred to Reston corporate which recently relocated. The previous Reston location had poor equipment especially compared to the clock tower so who knows what they'll have at the new location. read more

Boring gym. They need an upgrade and an update! It's overpriced for what they offer. They need to get more classes and updated the facility.

Avoid at all costs. The management is atrocious and should be ashamed and embarrassed of themselves. Do not waste your valuable time and energy dealing with this sleazy business. The gym itself is fairly old and dingy. The space gets is small and gets crowded during peak times. It's okay for a while if you don't care too much about the condition of your equipment (a workout is a workout), but overall a pretty rough gym for the price. My real gripe comes from trying to cancel my membership. I moved across the country and was unable to physically come into the original branch to cancel. I called Gold's corporate and they said I had to send a certified letter to the branch. Despite following their instructions perfectly, two months later, I'm still being billed. I went to a Gold's Gym thirty minutes from my new home, and was denied having my membership canceled because "we're a franchise so we can't affect that gym's memberships." I called the branch in Reston directly and the guy who picked up the phone claimed he wasn't authorized to cancel my membership without me being present. He said he could ask his GM for approval -- GREAT! -- Within a few minutes (So clearly the GM was around, just not willing to talk), he said I could send an email to cancel by the following day. I sent an email immediately after my phone call, and 7 days later, no response. I sent a follow up email, 2 days pass, no response. I sent an email explaining that I would be filing a complaint with the FTC. Within a few minutes of that email, I get a response from the gym with the confirmation of my billing cycle ending. It should not require multiple emails and phone calls to cancel my membership. What a joke. Wasted several hundred dollars and several hours of my time. read more

Truthfully, I'm quite surprised at how others rated this gym so low. Yes, it's odd that it's upstairs. Yes, it's definitely smaller than other gyms, so you might have to fight for a treadmill right after work. However, there's plentiful parking (it sucks when that's not the case at my Arlington gym), and the staff have been nothing but amiable (maybe even likeable). I can't speak for any classes or trainers, since I go after work just to do cardio, but this place serves my needs and is conveniently around the corner from work and just off 267. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Gold's Gym's business strategy is twofold: the first is to make this facility as unappealing as humanly possible so that those of us who are dumb enough to sign a contract never want to be there. The Reston gym is tiny, outdated, and poorly designed. There is one cramped area to lift weights that is routinely full of people shoulder-to-shoulder trying to workout. The cardio machines are often broken. There are no areas to do floor exercises or stretch, often resulting in people on the floor wherever they can find space. The second step is to make it impossible to vacate your contract, even if you have a legitimate and legal reason to do so. I moved out of Reston to Richmond where there are no corporate locations near me, so according to my contract, that allowed to cancel penalty free. The Gold's Gym associates literally tried to make that impossible. I was first told I had to drive back (2+ hours) to Reston to cancel in person. Then I was told I could do it in person in Richmond. Richmond has no corporate locations, so the non-corporate location indicated they couldn't help me and directed me back to Reston's management. No exaggeration, for MONTHS I've been on the phone back and forth with management trying to get my membership canceled and to stop getting charged--as is my right according to the very contract we both agreed to. Every time they assure me it's taken care of, and every month I still get charged. This has happened now TWICE despite being told it was handled. The staff also seem pretty disinterested in resolving any issues that don't concern coercing people into signing contracts. I can't tell you how many times I've called and asked for a manager to follow up (since no one but a manager can deal with memberships) and I never hear back. I don't know if their hands are tied or if they just don't care. All in all, this has been the most frustrating customer service experience I've ever had. Gold's Gym has a truly unbelievable level of incompetence from the top down and a total disregard for paying customers. Don't waste your money here. read more

I give golds zero stars if I could. We got tricked into a contract when we specifically said we did not want to be locked into anything long term. When we tried to cancel they had no idea how to do it so we wrote a formal letter to bring in - we saw the manager who signed us up and looked to him to help us and he walked away from us. I'm completely furious at there lack of customer service... them lying to my face, and the lack of knowledge they have with the company. WORST GYM IN VIRGINIA. I had initially been told I could do a 3 day trial to see if I liked the gym before committing to a membership. After I finished up on my first day I essentially got ushered into the office to sign a contract. I will admit it is my fault for allowing myself to be pressured into signing a 1-year contract when I didn't really feel I'd be able to commit to a year. I honestly never went back to the gym again, for multiple reasons. But I had signed a contract, so fine. HOWEVER my contract supposedly ran out 06/03/2018. I am STILL being charged every single month. I did NOT okay extending my contract. There is no way for me to cancel my payment/membership online. I have reached out to Gold's Gym MULTIPLE times and they have not responded. At this point they are stealing my money. read more

I workout here and have been a member for a year and a half. The staff is pretty friendly, there's always new people and I don't think people stay with the job long. I really like the classes and it's nice they're included. Yoga on Saturday morning is my favorite. It is pretty small and I'd like to go to a bigger gym, but a 5 minute walk from my house is worth it! read more

Pros: Most of the people who work there are friendly. The classes are awesome, and the instructors are great at what they do! The gym is reasonably clean. The monthly membership is affordable, which is hard to find in the DC metro. There is a good amount of equipment for the size of the gym, but forget about finding a treadmill or elliptical during M-F between 5pm-7pm. This brings me to my cons... Cons: The gym is TINY. You can't even walk through the gym on a week night without feeling like you're going to run into someone. Forget about being able to stretch or do some toning work on a mat. If there are any mats available, you'll be stuck doing your crunches next to someone's crotch because everyone is crammed into the gym like sardines. If it weren't for the convenient location and affordable membership prices of this gym, I'd consider looking elsewhere. read more

The General Manager (Rob) was equivalent to a use car salesman. Never believe a word that he says. After a tour, he told me to come back after 5 days and let him know if I wanted sign up. My credit card would not be charged unless I come back and sign up. Two weeks later, I noticed I got charged for a year long membership. I called and spoke to him and he told he never said that. I went to this gym for just over three years, primarily while it was still a Fitness First. As others have noted, it is small and does feel tight, especially after 5 PM on weekdays. If you're an early bird and can squeeze a workout in before 8 AM, there's no issue finding space or your choice of machines. Absolutely on the positive side is the affordability. I joined in 2010 with no contract for $20/month, and my rate was never changed, even following the purchase by Gold's. The annual fee in March is also reasonable. I never experienced billing issues either. If you need a decent place for some cardio or a good group class on the cheap, this is your gym. It's not the best in the area by any means, but certainly adequate given the space constraints. read more

The gym is nice and the trainers are good however their billing is ridiculous. When you have an issue the people who answer the phone and general manager usually are unable to solve the problem and you are told to send an email to the regional customer service center. No phone number is available to call the regional folks which just makes for that much more displeasure. Be aware of what you pay to cancel. I canceled my membership and 3 days later was billed for a membership plus training classes. 26 days later I was billed an annual assessment which I was told was for facilities, etc. I am out $180 all billed after my cancellation. read more
