Hope this message finds you well. I am extremely disturbed by an experience I had today, September 3rd, upon arriving at the facility. Normally I am greeted warmly by a wonderful staff member, but today an unfamiliar staff member named Jake approached me in a manner that was deeply unsettling. As soon as I walked in, he fixed me with a harsh, almost hostile look. He then rushed over to me and abruptly asked, "What gym do you usually go to?" His body language and the way he looked me up and down were aggressive and inappropriate, leaving me feeling highly uncomfortable, unwelcome, and singled out. What made the situation even more distressing was that just moments later, two other individuals walked past him and he made no effort to stop or question them. It was very clear that I was treated differently, and I cannot help but believe this was because of my skin color. This encounter was not only unprofessional but extremely disturbing. It made me feel discriminated against and as though I was not wanted in a place where I had every right to be, especially considering that I could have easily paid for entry that day. I am bringing this to your immediate attention because no member, guest, or visitor should ever feel targeted or harassed in this way. I recommend ANY other Golds gym in the area!!! read more

Gold's Gym - Gyms Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

This was a really good gym. I'm in town as a guest visiting family, and Carter, Jake Morris, and Thiago helped me and were so kind to getting me back into the system. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would give this less than 5 stars. This was a very good gym when I came to it in high school 20 years ago. It has improved and evolved since then with the really nice lifting platforms. As someone who uses a powerlifting gym, this is pretty accommodating for someone who typically doesn't use globo gyms. Leadership is everything. I was a member here for 7 years. Saw at least 10 general managers come and go. That's a sign in itself of a bad workplace, but I never had issues as a member until recently when for the first time in 7 years, my card was declined on the automatic monthly withdrawal. The person at the front desk said I needed to talk to my bank about it, and because of the failure, I was also charged a fee. To my bank I went, and they told me they couldn't even find an attempt at a withdrawal and verified there was plenty of money to cover the bill. I asked my banker to call Gold's to say so. That's when the girl in billing said there must be something wrong w/ my card... information must've changed. Nothing changed on my end, but she did have my old address. That's when she proceeded to talk over me telling me how their billing system changed, which made it clear to me that the issue was due to their system change. My card, afterall, had been accepted for seven years under the old system. When I said, "Let's update the address," she asked me to hold, but in fact hung up on me! When I tried to call back, the girl at the front desk said that the girl in billing wouldn't come to the phone because, "There were words." WHAT? There were no "words." No verbal combat. There was me saying their system change was the cause of the error, but no "words." That's when the front desk girl transferred me to the new GM who interrupted me before I could even finish telling him what happened by asking for my correct address, as if updating it was the only problem there was, the problem was fixed and we were finished. I had to tell him to take me off speaker phone, blasting my personal information all over his office to whomever was in earshot. I then asked if he cared to hear the rest of the story. He took the cue, then proceeded to defend the billing girl for having a bad day adding, "We all have bad days." Then he patronized me by offering me a free workout with a trainer. What the hell? What about your unprofessional staff member who hangs up on customers, never apologizes and refuses to do her job? What about the fee you charged me as a result of YOUR system change? How many other members were wrongly charged this same fee and didn't bother to find out why? Needless to say, I cancelled my membership. And THAT was a hassle, too! Didn't get my fee back even though the GM said I would. The billing company refuses to let customers speak to anyone who has access to account information and only accepts e-mail. What the hell kind of customer service is that? Good riddance to Gold's and their immature, ill-equipped, unprofessional staff! There are better gyms. Cheaper gyms. A solid gym. Could be a great gym if they changed some equipment Cons: - The functional space is nice, but overall lacks functional equipment (in my humble opinion). They only have ~2 TRX and limited resistance bands/kettlebells. They don't have rings, despite the space and structures to apply them. Recently, they sadly replaced the only Jammer for another cable universal (of which, there are many cables but no good substitute for a Jammer). -There are some Gruntasaurus Rex's here. This isn't the occasional, more reasonable grunt at the end of a one-rep max or end of a long superset.... it's the embarrassing grunt through every rep. Thankfully, the gym is sectioned off enough (long hallway) where those avoiding this can exercise away from this (e.g. women's gym on way other end) - The contract is quite binding. Need to move substantially away from a Gold's or have a doctor's note. Pro's: - It is relatively a large gym, which is overall well organized with ample weights/plates and various machines/benches/cardio machines/cardio theatre. A little tight on squat racks. The equipment stays reasonably cleaned and maintained. - If you like heavier dumbbells, this is one of the only places around that go up to 150's - The classes seem solid, and well attended - They have a solid functional space - Have saunas and the locker rooms are solid (bathrooms marginal) - Childcare is at a reasonable cost and has a good acceptance for different age groups. Let me start this out by saying I wish I could give this place zero stars. READ THE CANCELLATION POLICY BEFORE SIGNING UP. The management is too busy trying to rope you in to a s*** contract that they provide zero transparency as to the unnecessary logistics and repercussions that come with cancelling your membership. I was told that I could cancel verbally, so after leaving Richmond to move to Washington, D.C., I assumed that I would not be charged any longer. Not only did their third-party billing service, Taft Services (don't even get me started on them), bill me every single month one year later and refused to compensate me in the slightest for their screw up, they also charged me an additional $50 cancellation fee. Never in my life have I had a more negative experience with a gym, but doing business overall. You will get screwed over by the verbiage of the contract, I guarantee it. read more

Horrible experience with this gym! If you are looking for a gym with flexibility and Good Service and a good variety of Stuff to help with your workout this is not the place! They are privately owned and that means you can't go to any other locations and they will not tell you you are paying double the price to go here vs going to any other golds gym. I got a membership that allows you to travel between gyms and this location was closer to my house but it's considered a franchise and doesn't allow you to workout here. It doesn't say anything anywhere about it not being apart of the Golds Gym actual gym. Wasted time driving here and missed my workout. Better communication would be great. read more

READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY, SPECIFICALLY THE CANCELLATION POLICY IN MIDDLE OF THE BACK PAGE BEFORE JOINING! To be clear, the ONLY way you are able to cancel your contract is if you have a written doctor's note or you relocate to over 25 miles away from the location. That's it! No other reason is valid in their eyes, even if your work situation changes and you travel frequently and your new schedule prohibits you from having time to use the gym any longer, as what has happened to me. You still have to pay the remainder of your contract, despite not being able to use the service. If you no longer want to use your cable, your internet, your cell phone, your water, etc. - you would call the customer service to cancel your agreement. The process is surely not easy to go through at the different call centers, and it is almost always frustrating, but at the end of the day if you do not plan to use a service contract any longer (in almost any other institution) then you are able to call and stop paying for something you can no longer use or afford. Why is that not possible with a Gold's gym membership? At the time I joined, I didn't know that I would have a career change that was going to make it impossible to come to the gym any longer. If I had known, I would certainly not have signed up for a contract that I couldn't get out of any other way! My advice is to do further research about other gyms in the area before considering joining Gold's Gym (perhaps Crunch Fitness, American Family Fitness, or the YMCA - for example) and ask them what their cancellation policy is to make sure that even if something unexpected arises (as in my case,) that you will still have the option to stop paying for a service that you no longer can use. Otherwise, prepare to be frustrated that you will be forced to pay about $35 a month (or more) to this company and not have any other recourse. read more

This is without a doubt the most uncomfortable gym i have ever worked out in. Way too much groaning and grunting...by muscle bound bro science dimwits. Although the equipment is good. Getting in them us next to impossible. The women are looked at like food. The men hoard free weights. Tie up equipment and talk about others. Making it very uncomfortable. Personally I've tried to cancell my membership. Golds gym will not allow me to. Even after explaining being bullied into a trainer that i did not want Niw they take 35.00 per month for membership and an additional 45.00 fir a trainer that i have worked with 2 times. I'm a simple person that enjoys working out. Yes, this gym has lots of equipment and is somewhat clean but they have some management problems. If you're looking for friendly management that will assist with your problems, I would not recommend this gym. My family and I have had nothing but headaches with this Gold's Gym. I can account on numerous occasions we've had to talk to upper management to solve problems with payments or training. The gym also has problems with staff constantly changing which has lead to confusion and inconsistent responses. Though it is not all staff members that we have come in contact with, the vast majority of staff especially leadership is lacking. Staff was very inconsistent with enforcing the rules of the gym, which at times was very frustrating. It was obvious which people had the in with management. If you're looking for a gym to workout in then I would suggest not coming to this Gold's gym. There are plenty of other gyms nearby that don't have the same issues. read more

Beware of their contracts and their shady billing service. I would give them negative stars I could! I was moving to other state and they didn't have golds gym and when I provided them with all my document they said they will cancel it but they still kept on charging me. When I called them to ask them why are they still charging me they are like we don't have proper documentation. Even though I provided them with New state driver license and bills. So usually I am one to never give negative reviews, however 7 months later I'm still super disturbed with golds gym. A previous reviewer on here nailed in on the head READ THEIR POLICY INFORMATION SUPER SHADY BILLING/CONTRACTS. I signed up for golds in jan2019 for only a 3 month contract, march2019 I was under the impression that I was only renewing for an additional 3 months. Meaning my recurring charges should have ended june2019. Inconveniently I find out this month that they had continued with recurring charges without my authorization. I went into the gym at one point to see what I can do, they pretty much said I was screwed and the only was out I would have to pay a cancellation fee of like $120. Called their customer service line and they also said their was nothing they can do and I would continue to get charged regardless unless I paid a cancellation fee. Very annoying, I feel like they've been stealing money from me practically. The facilities are nice with a lot of good equipment but definitely full of guidos. Sucks there is not any golds gyms in Delaware (current location). read more

I joined Gold's Gym last April 2018....for a 12 month contract(sooo I thought). At the time they were using very small pads to sign you up (visually I just could not see the print) at the Gayton crossing location and in the process of building the new center. I was told I could cancel anytime with a $50 penalty. The new center did not open till months later...and started off with class times that were good. All of that changed!!! Times no longer good...then with a job change I asked to cancel my membership....found out they had locked me into a 24 month membership and would not release me...so of course I still pay monthly fee plus their yearly fee on top of that!!!! Do not trust any of their recruiters!!!! They Lie ...Lie....Lie!!!! I cannot wait to be rid of this gym!!!! read more

I went to this Gold's for a while when I lived in an apartment in the West End. It's pretty basic. There's lots of cardio and weightlifting machines, rooms for classes, spinning and locker rooms. It's nothing fancy and it's not brand new, but it does the trick. I was perfectly happy here. As with most gyms, the best time to go (if you work full time) is during the on the weekend and the worst time to go is between 5 and 7 on week days. The personal trainers here are hit or miss. I think the turnover is pretty high. I had one who was really great and another who always missed sessions. I'd have to call and ask her why she didn't show up. I'm pretty sure I left my membership with outstanding sessions, but I just didn't want to bother to try and get my money back. This Gold's is a solid, simple place to work out, but if you want trendy or fancy, go elsewhere. read more

If I actually went to the gym in the mornings as much as I fantasized about going, I'd give Jillian Michaels a run for her money. Today was yet another morning where I gazed at the clock, looked towards the light streaming through the hotel window, glanced at my running shoes and began the habitual snuggle back into my pillow. This morning, my inner workout girl voice won. (It doesn't happen too often. Her voice usually prevails in the late afternoon). Since the Courtyard isn't known for their fantastic work out facilities, I made the 2 mile trek down West Broad Street to Golds. Well, not physically... I drove. I suppose this is the irony: I drive two miles to the gym to jump on a treadmill and run almost 4. After a quick free weight session, I drive two miles back. For a $15 guest fee. One of the smaller Golds Gym facilities I have attended, but traffic was slow this morning, and the entire row of treadmills were virtually empty. Enough equipment to keep one busy for a few hours; I foresee returning to check the box on the AM workout next time my inner workout voice wins. Don't expect to see me anytime soon though......... read more

I'm a new member at Gold's gym West End and I have to say I'm underwhelmed. My biggest complaint is with the daycare. Every time I have dropped off or picked my kids up from the daycare, the workers are just sitting not engaging with the children. I was previously a member of American Family and the workers were always engaged with the children doing some type of activity: coloring, games, movement to music, etc. If you don't have kids then the gym is fair, the staff is nice, but if you do have kids you might want to consider elsewhere if you want them to do anything besides watch a movie or play wii. read more

I've had the privilege of being a member at the Golds Gym at willow lawn and other than the proximity to where I live now, this place is not worth the money. Crowded, small, staff isn't that friendly and no exciting changes over the years I've been coming. I don't believe in using cloth towels in wiping down equipment because I think using throw away paper towels is more sanitary. Also, paper towels and hand sanitizer stations aren't accessible. I'm already considering other alternatives. read more

I went to work out with my daughter as her guest. I like that theres no charge to bring a guest, or any pressure to join. (Unlike Amfam who make you sit down with a sales guy) but what I dont like and evidently they dont tell you at Golds is that your $30 membership thats giving you access to all gyms doesnt mean literally all.. certain franchises are owned by certain ones and the all that you get access to is still limited to certain ones NOT ALL. Other than that..the gym was nice. I liked the setup of machines, and got a good workout in. I have considered switching from Amfam to Golds. Maybe one day. read more

I was out of town, and had to find a place to workout the day after thanks giving. Although the location seems to be a little aged. The equipment and weights are all new, in functioning order, and clean. The staff were super friendly! I would definitely go back! Love this gym!!!! Has everything for every goal type whether it's for sports training, bodybuilding, etc. I have seen so much progress from members here compared to other gyms I've been too. I used to belong to this location as well as a Golds in California. I considered rejoining when I moved back to RVA. However, for what you get, I think they are overpriced! This gym space is fairly small and tight. In my opinion, the ceilings are low for a gym (no warehouse feel). If you come into the gym in the evening after the crowd, the air is thick and it is terribly humid inside. I love that they have arc trainers but to me, that piece of cardio equipment is not worth joining this tiny gym again. read more

I would of made this post a while ago but somehow my account was hacked when I moved and I recently started looking for a new gym and it made me think about it. I went to westend golds for a little while but couldn't get over all the shadiness that you was constantly hearing about. I almost got sucked in to a Personal Training contract and thank god my friend talked me out of it or else they would have taken me for every penny I had. I finally moved and was able to get out my contract and get away from there. But one of the things I did remember was the front desk girl in the mornings was always really nice to me and put in the effort to help me when needed and went the extra mile for others from what I seen and the cleaning lady there was always cleaning every time I seen her. The billing department at that gym is the absolute worst and I pray for anyone who has to cancel. read more

Gold's gym is overall a horrible gym. I had many issues with their billing department and their training department mainly. I paid for training sessions I was not getting and when I tried to get those sessions no one would tell me why, but they were not giving me my sessions. Finally Matt, who was the last training manager I talked to, promised me I'd get those sessions. I had about 4 "sessions". Those sessions were all with different people and they were about 10-15 minutes long when the sessions are supposed to be 30. I've been involved with so many different people because of their high turnover rate, I cannot keep track of the names. This gym is very unprofessional and I wasted a year and a half of my time and money trying to get sessions that were owed to me because I had paid for them. I quit the gym and am glad to be done with them but it's like I flushed 500+ dollars down the toilet. read more

Avoid Gold Gym. Go to any other gym. I wish I never went to this gym, it really just squeezes as much money from you as possible. Firstly they signed me up for a compel fitness that wants you to sign a 1-year contract as soon as you're there. I signed up for this contract and the sessions were simply some random workouts they got from a website and asked us to do. The trainers were different each time you go to these sessions which don't give you any chance to form a bond with your trainer and grow with them. Then the gym when you want to cancel comes up with a new excuse each time for why they cancel. Apparently the managers are NEVER there when you want to cancel. NEVER! They are always gone when you want to cancel a membership. Don't sign up with them, they won't let you leave. It's no wonder they filed for bankruptcy. read more

I love working out at this location. It is large and has plenty of equipment. It doesn't get too crowded. I never have to wait for a machine. The clientele is nice. The staff is super friendly. I have been training with Krishna and she is awesome. She knows what I need to work on and she pushes me to get it done. read more

Stay away! You cannot cancel your membership. We have been trying for several months, in person, by phone and by email. The gym itself is happy to write a contract and bill you for years but they say they can't cancel it. The number and email they give you are no help. They say they can't find it - or you have to contact the gym directly (who of course cannot cancel it). An email acknowledged receipt of our request but never stopped billing. Used a workout pass at this gold's gym a while ago in the Richmond, VA area. One of their personal trainer's Andre Karr become very irate with me when I forgot to re-rack my weights on a bench press machine. I asked to speak to a manager but he said there was not one around at the time! read more

I transferred from another Gold's and I'm delighted. All I really want in a gym is equipment in good working condition and equipment I can actually get to use. All the equipment that my old gym thought was too expensive to maintain or replace is here and it works and it's the latest model. And I've rarely had to wait for a piece of equipment to become available. read more

Very disappointed with golds gym. I was a member for over 2 years and I moved. They have continued to charge my account the ridiculous training and membership fees even after I paid $50 to cancel the membership. Their relationship with Taft financial is missing. There is no right form of communication. They are taking my money and do not even care. I am paying for a service that I have not used in almost 10 months. $400 a month has been coming out and account I did not authorize. Absolutely ridiculous. I have enjoyed my experience so far....there could be minor improvements...a few air fresheners in the ladies restroom area..updating and cleaning the tanning beds..changing out a couple of the really old rusted machines I've seen near the theatre room and in the ladies work out area (although there are other options)...also the gentleman who generally works front desk early morning seems to have a tough time keeping up with the movies.Ive had to remind him that the movie is over(credits and all) lol, a few times...not a deal breaker. You will not be able to cancel your contract. Even if you are moving, your new residence has to be less than 25 miles away from the gym or any other gym in the franchise. Taft services handles the payments, so it is more there fault than Golds's itself. All I can do it try to use the location near my new residence even thought I am very dissatisfied with the service associated with this mediocre gym. In general their selling practices are shady and they will tell you anything to sell you a 2 year contract. I know shame on me for not reading the fine print. It was my first time getting a membership for a gym. I remember specifically asking the attendant during the signup process if I could cancel the contract and she said "Yes". read more
