Whenever I have a rating that goes against what others' ratings are for a particular business, I…read moremake sure to thoroughly evaluate all aspects of the business and my experiences of it. So yes, I have taken a full and complete look at this business and my experiences with it and simply had a different experience than others. I took lessons here awhile back and have recently been taking lessons at a different business recently. The lessons at My Chicago Golf started out well. Marcus was attentive and was able to make a difference in my game. Things were going well. That is, until, he slept through one of our scheduled appointments. His system sends out numerous reminders about upcoming appointments to customers. Unfortunately, it seems that it only sends them out to his customers, and not to him. We had an appointment scheduled, and I showed up fifteen minutes early. His storefront was locked, and knocking and ringing the doorbell did not yield any type of response. Unfortunately, emailing, texting, and leaving voicemails also did not make a difference either as they all went unanswered. After waiting about forty-five minutes for a sixty minute lesson, he finally opened the door. At that time, however, the customer for the next hour was already waiting at the door! That customer was courteous enough to let me use his scheduled hour, and he rescheduled with Marcus. As the lesson went on, Marcus did apologize for sleeping through it. He said that he overscheduled himself that morning, which caused him to oversleep during a nap. He was definitely drowsy throughout the appointment, and wasn't entirely alert or focused on my swing. What disappointed me the most, however, was that he didn't take responsibility for his mishap. Mistakes happen to everyone. Apologizing is only the first step in taking responsibility for those mistakes. He didn't offer an extra free lesson or a refund, or anything for that matter, to make up for his major mistake. This last part that is why he is losing two stars. If he would have taken responsibility for his failures, I wouldn't be as disappointed with him. I even would have used the final lessons I had in the package I purchased. Instead, I let them go unused because I was so let down by him. Missing an appointment completely without notice and/or an acceptable reason is a huge negative and a large problem. These lessons are not cheap. What's even worse is not taking responsibility for it. Mistakes can be overlooked, if the person making those mistakes owns up to them and takes responsibility. Unfortunately that didn't happen here.

As someone who is just getting started golfing, he has really stressed the fundamentals while still pushing me to get to a point where I have the necessary skills to be able to practice and grow independently. The difference I see after each lesson is measurable and I've always left with things to practice (with videos demonstrating the exercise) so I can continue to see growth. Additionally, his location is a fantastic setup with some of the newest golf simulator technology to really enhance the lesson experience. I did a fair amount of research on different golf instructors and facilities in Chicago and am thrilled I landed on My Chicago Golf. I can't recommend Marcus and My Chicago Golf enough.

Being my first time here, I wasn't familiar with how things worked at this course, especially with their Toptracer setup and range boundaries. There wasn't clear signage to explain the rules or layout. Unfortunately, after hitting my balls, the owner himself came storming out and started aggressively yelling at me in front of other customers for apparently hitting balls past a certain perimeter -- something I had no idea was an issue. I tried to explain it was my first time there and that I was unaware of any restrictions, but instead of de-escalating, he continued to berate me. Things got even more unsettling when I went to my vehicle in the parking lot, only for the owner to follow me out, sit on the hood of my truck, and physically prevent me from leaving the property. It wasn't until the police that he called arrived, I was able to safely leave. I've never experienced anything like this in all my years of golfing at courses around the country. It was an incredibly unprofessional and uncomfortable situation, and I would strongly advise anyone -- especially visitors -- to be cautious if considering this course. At the very least, be aware that this business seems to lack proper communication and hospitality toward guests unfamiliar with their setup.

A couple of weeks ago they had booked a tee time to play four holes together, hoping to enjoy a quiet, casual outing with a golf cart on a nice day. When they arrived and went inside to pay, the owner immediately scolded them for scheduling a tee time for only four holes, claiming they took a spot away from a "full-paying customer." Instead of calmly explaining course policies or handling the situation with understanding -- especially given their ages -- the owner raised his voice and made them feel unwelcome. He then insisted they pay the full nine-hole fee, even though they were very clear about only wanting to play a few holes. It's incredibly disappointing to see a business treat guests this way, especially elderly customers just looking to enjoy a peaceful round of golf together. There's a right way to manage course operations, and this wasn't it. Customer service and basic kindness matter -- and unfortunately, that was lacking here.

The indoor food first: we got the fried cod and a couple of drinks. I wish I'd taken pictures but the place was crowded and loud so it was a little much to try to relax and hear the music much less have a conversation so when the food came, we ate! The cod was thickly battered but cooked nicely with plenty of tender fish inside so the batter didn't take over. Almost, but not. We got a generously sized baked potato and a little coleslaw. I avoided the coleslaw, but the potato was good and the hot food was delivered hot, which was a refreshing change from some places. Although crowded the service was good. It was a little slow getting our checks but everyone was leaving around the same time so that's understandable. My friend had a nice chat getting to know the waitress at the end. My friend is definitely a get to know you kinda person, but that's beside the point, except I'm sure the waitress will remember us next time we go so that's nice. The music. It was supposed to be an acoustic night but definitely was hard to hear over the conversations which were loud. He did do a few riffs on an electric guitar and I think some kind of keyboard, no doubt so we could hear something, but the room and crowd was not made to be able to hear much. In the better weather these events are louder outside and crowded with 3 food truck choices usually. I look forward to going to those again. I wish I could review the golf course but I've yet to play it. I look forward to trying 9 holes soon. It has three 9 hole courses, regulation length. love to try it out. From the clubhouse it looks beautiful and lots of rolling hills so I'll have to give it a spin this summer too.
