Unfortunately, one of the people in the pro shop came out and chastised us for taking longer than the allotted time and backing up people behind us. Never mind that we were letting people play through. Needless to say, I refused to waste my money there on food and I will not go back. It's great to try to keep pace going, but if you alienate young players, who are going to be your customers in the future? I was so put off by the tone, I was ready to leave and blowoff the back nine. My kids wanted to keep playing. Unfortunately, once we started the back, my daughter decided she didn't want to get more people mad at her so she didn't want to play. I finally convinced her to at least drop a ball by the green so she could chip and putt. Not really how to help her improve her game. So many other courses around here that actually appreciate and support young players, no need to play Swanhills!

The course was having a special weekday deal apparently, a $1/person/hole or $2/person/hole/cart deal. So it would have cost 36 dollars total if we wanted a cart, but since we didn't it was only 18 bucks! We also got a tee time right away, but later on in the afternoon we started seeing a little congestion on the course. As for the course itself, it was a pretty good layout, with lots of long dogleg holes. I think there were only two Par 3 holes. There were few wooded areas and no water features, so it was rather easy to keep from losing many golf balls through the day. We only lost 1, between the two of us! There was also ice cold water in coolers after the fourth hole and then a couple holes later, which was nice. All in all, I think I would go back here again! Absolutely nothing wrong with this course, and a very low chance of losing balls (compare that to the Ledges)

We had a 2:33 tee time. We showed up at about 1:35 hoping to get some range time in. They told us to tee off immediately or we would be blocked on the turn by leagues who "held the box" at 4:00 p.m. No one had told us this when booking the tee time. After that, we were treated with a 5 hour round. Today I played with my wife and son. 3:00 p.m. tee time. When we showed up the folks in the Pro Shop seemed surprised and irritated that people might be expecting to play golf. There was no one present initially, and when finally the lady came over from the bar it was a joke. She had no idea what was going on. Another guy came over, and I politely asked "Are there any pencils?" (since none were present) and at one point also politely asked "Can we get our cart keys?" Again, he was quite irritated that someone who had booked a tee time and been waiting in the Pro Shop for at least 10 minutes might be asking these questions. He said something like "OK, OK, settle down. Everybody wants pencils, cart keys, etc." Geez. Then we had another 5 hour round (or I should say we skipped the final hole to avoid a 5 hour round). I use the word "hack" in the title, and as an 18 handicap, I'm pretty much also a hack. But my wife, son and I will EASILY play under 4 hours if no one is in front of us. Brooks Koepka is right: Slow pace is killing the game. If you're looking to get drunk, and play in a league or an outing, Marengo Ridge is for you. If you just want to play golf, go somewhere else. And it's too bad.. the course is is really nice shape, and it's an interesting layout.

I've deducted a star from 4 to 3 because this course was in worse condition in 2013 when when we…read moreplayed it years ago. The fairways needed a lot of upkeep and the greens were pretty hacked. For only $25-$40, this is one of the best courses you can play at that price. Thus I'm giving it 4 1/2 stars. The pros: What separates this course from other nicer courses is the greens, which are usually in excellent condition. Some holes remind me of looking at a cover of a golf magazine I applaud the players who fix their divot marks. And if the weather has been hot and dry, the greens are fast like glass. Most of the holes force you to shape your drives and there are many water holes and bunkers. The driving range lets you hit on grass and carts come with GPS. The cons: The only thing I can think of is the distance, but I will not deduct any stars for that. I highly recommend this course if you can make it out here, but practice shaping your drives at driving range first.
