Seeing the great reviews, we checked this place out in the middle of the afternoon for a late lunch. It was quite busy and so there was a bit of wait for our table. We decided to order the traditional beef noodles, dan dan noodles, and chow mein. First off, we noticed that the portions were huge! Each item was served in a giant bowl and they didn't skimp out on the meat compared to other places. I found the traditional noodles were not too spicy so I added some of their chili oil which was very fragrant. For the dan dan noodles, they were covered in a spicy peanut-y sauce with plenty of nuts and ground pork. The noodles itself tasted quite authentic and had a nice chew. However, I found the chow mein too greasy as the cabbage and noodles clung to the oil. I don't think I'd order this dish again. Other than that, the food tasted great and the prices are budget-friendly. I'd recommend this place to grab a hot bowl of hand pulled noodles - just don't forget to bring cash for 5% discount off your bill! read more

Very generous portions considering the price! Noodles are hand pulled and highly toothsome. You get a choice of noodle thickness and shape when you order, thin, medium and thick as well as round or flat. The broth is flavorful and fresh. There are bottles of vinegar and chili oil available at the tables. Servers here are markedly better than at comparable establishments in the plaza. It's newly opened, so quality of service may go down as time goes on, but my hopes are high! I got the zhajiangmian, which was quite good. My friend got the large bowl of noodles, which he failed to finish simply due to the fact that he is an exceptionally small man and the portion size of the noodles was exceptionally large. My go-to spot in Waterloo! I've visited Gol's' many times and am always satisfied with the food. I've tried the Beef Tendon Noodle, Baked Oysters and a few of the BBQ items, which I think all use the same cumin spice mix. The traditional beef noodles are the reason I keep coming back, with a really flavourful broth (not too spicy!), good beef and the hand pulled noodles are a great touch. The portions are huge and definitely easy on the budget (I sometimes split a large). There's very quick turnover, I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes for a seat, however service is basically non existent, so if you need something you'll have better luck getting up to the front to go ask yourself. This place was awesome! We ordered the traditional noodle soup, spicy beef chow mein, frog legs skewer, and the pork belly skewer. The food is extremely authentic (you can watch them make the noodles right there!), flavourful, and great value for the price! Loved the traditional noodle soup - it came with tons of beef, the broth was amazing, and the noodles were super fresh! The chow mein was also great, packed with veggies and meat, just slightly on the oily side. The pork belly skewer was super tasty and I loved the spices they used. The frog legs were good, and basically tasted like chicken (came with three) but they're pretty small and I wouldn't get them again. While visiting the University town of Waterloo, Ontario for a lacrosse tournament....we decided to pull into a small strip mall packed with eateries looking for pizza. As we drove through the maze of the cramped parking lot looking for the advertised Pizza joint to grab a slice it was nowhere to be found. To our incredible fortune we did find a noodle house. Gol's Lanzhou Noodles to be exact. If you've never had Lanzhou noodles your if for a treat. These aren't your dry bland pre packaged noodles. Oh no, these are made fresh before your eyes , hand pulled... it's like magic! I ordered the chicken chowmein partly because I saw it come out of the kitchen and wanted to steal the dish right from the server. My dining partner had a Gol's specialty which was the soup(spicy or mild). You also can choose the size of noodle you want from very thin to very fat thin noodles. There is a side menu for the more adventurous- (Frog legs,Beef heart vessel,pork feet, chicken cartilage) you get the picture.It's a very typical noodle house interior with about 10-15 tables. Very well staffed and very polite and attentive. We our dishes came, it was like euphoria the aroma and visuals were outstanding. Instant food porn! The taste and texture of the noodles....amazing! This is my go-to location for hand-pulled noodles. The price is amazing for the food portion (very student friendly, ~$10 for a lot of noodles). The taste is very unique and super great for a winter day (not that the soup has stopped me from eating here in the summer, haha!). I have yet to dive into their BBQ option but so far have tried the squid. The seasoning was exactly what I wanted and was super yummy; however, the squid itself was chewy, sadly. The service time is good and the place is small but fits a sizeable crowd. There is a bar and tableside option for anyone going in solo or as a group. During peak hours, you can expect to wait for a table. It's great that Gol's gets this much service but definitely turns me away when the line is so long. TIP: Get 5% off when using cash to pay! They give you the option of choosing the thickness of your noodles and the spice level of your broth. The regular size is super filling! This was so freaking good. I had the beef hand pull noodle soup with mild spiciness and the soup broth tasted amazing, I couldn't stop drinking it (I don't usually drink my soup broths!!!). I was impressed by the texture and amount of beef they added to the soup-- most restaurants give small amounts of beef, or very fatty cuts, or beef that is hard to chew. The beef was soft, tender, and not fatty! The noodles tasted great as well, only complaint was that they were very long (But I think that's the way they are supposed to be, I personally prefer shorter noodles though.) It was a perfect meal for a cold winters day, especially for a great price ($9.99!!!), note that the portions are on the larger/more filling end (I got a regular size). I've had a few different things on the menu and my overall opinion is that the noodles are very yummy but the sauce/soup always has too much MSG. For their classic beef noodle soup, the portion size is good but you don't really get much other than the noodles and the MSG soup, and when I asked for bok choy, they gave it to me as a plain boiled side dish instead and it wasn't able to soak any of the soup flavour. So the result is that the first few bites are delicious, but because the flavour is so uniform it gets old pretty fast. read more

This place is the place to go for hand pulled noodles. Service was standard and fast, the only thing I didn't really enjoy was how close together the tables were. I felt like I was practically sitting with the table beside me, especially since they didn't have the utensil box at their table and just reached over to ours to get chopsticks. The chairs also don't have backs, so there is nowhere to hang your bag/coat. Relatively inexpensive and super tasty. I got the original hand pulled noodles with beef, non spicy. The broth was delicious and serving size of noodles was filling. There wasn't an excessive amount of beef but it wasn't little by any means. when I eat noodles here, all my stress and anxiety is eliminated and it's impossible to think about anything else. I usually eat at restaurants around uwaterloo with my headphones on just eating alone. But I simply have to take my headphones off when I eat here so I can properly appreciate these handmade, authentic noodles. Then when I start to eat, I just become so grateful of everything in life tbh. The thick (or thin) noodles that each have different sizes cuz they're handpulled, the copious amounts of meat they give, the cheap price for each bowl, the menu having large *pictures* for each bowl so you don't have to guess what they look like, and it takes like 5 minutes to come out when you order it. In conclusion, this noodle place single-handedly makes Waterloo a livable city. read more
