I knew I had to stop by here before leaving Stockholm and today was that day! I noticed the odd protruding crane like structure when I was walking around Slussen and looked up the name of it. Turns out Gondolen is a bar/restaurant that was converted to from a crane! Of course my New York self just had to stop here. Expensive cocktails, views of the city? Pretty much what every New Yorker lives for. So I made my way through the construction and followed the signs to Gondolen. Once you walk into this glass building there's 3 elevators. 1 elevator can hold 1 person, another elevator can hold 2 and I believe the 3 elevator can hold 5. Anyways I took the 2nd elevator that held 2 people all the way up to the 11th floor where the bar/restaurant was located. Once I walked in, I was greeted by the coat check lady and she was super nice in seating and welcoming me! She informed me that they won't be serving any food since the kitchen was closed but I can sit at the bar and enjoy some drinks/desserts. So that's exactly what I did! I ordered a elderflower and lime juice drink that was strong but not too strong and refreshing. I can definitely see myself ordering these while laying out by the pool. They're so crisp and cooling! I decided to get the creme brûlée because I heard great reviews about it. I'm honestly so glad I did! I've had creme brûlée at other restaurants before and I never noticed the vanilla bean seeds in them. However, Gondolen did not disappoint as I saw MANY vanilla bean seeds which indicated they used the actual bean instead of the extract. Way to go Gondolen! Anyways, the view was breathtaking, the atmosphere was cozy and the staff was extremely friendly. If I lived in Stockholm, I would come here at least once a week to enjoy the environment and views!

    Stunning view .

Gorgeous views overlooking Stockholm. Great service , great beers , comfortable atmosphere. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a relaxing drink with a gorgeous view.

It's difficult to give three stars because the view from the top of the restaurant was beautiful. We got a nice view of old town and of the water. However, the food here is what brought it down to 3 stars. We expected a lot more from the food given the price (over 1400 Kronas a person). Rib eye was extremely salty and overall, the food lacked a layer of delicacy. I would recommend coming up here for a drink (although still pricey for what it is), but skip this place for dinner.

Had dessert and drinks up here. For dessert we had the strawberries and creme and chocolate truffle. The strawberries came in a bowl with a side of creme that didn't seem to have any sugar. The sugar came on the side. It was almost something you could make at home. The chocolate truffle was a dense ball of chocolate. Dry apple cider, you can never go wrong with an apple cider. They served it with a glass of ice, amazingly refreshing ! The view was beautiful. You can see all of Stockholm from this. There's an enclosed area in which you are able to borrow blankets and be warmer. There's also an outside area, which is the bridge..

If you are a sucker for the views this is one of the places to go to in Stockholm. Although it is far past its glory days, Gondolen serves food and drink of impeccable quality. They excel in fish and seafood and they will pick a wine for you that perfectly matches the food. It's pricey, but not outrageous. For starters, I can recommend the oysters that are fleshy and fresh. For the main dish, the turbot with capris and beetroot is delicious and perfectly cooked. My objections then. First, the servings are way too small, you will never be statisfied if you order just a main dish. Second, the whole place seems a bit unmodern and it's easy to feel a bit out of place. Finally, the entrance is just horrid. It smells of urine and the elevator ride to the restaurant will make you lose your apetite. It's too bad to lose points on things that should be hygiene..

We were here for the Christmas smorgasbord - "julbord" - and this is what this review is about. This was the second time I was there for the smorgasbord in three years. We were a company of four with a reservation for 7:30pm (yes, reservations are needed and in due time to reserve a spot). Arriving 15 minutes early we were sent to the bar to get a drink - and enjoy the magnificent view, overlooking the city in 270 degrees; be it a summer's day or a winter's night - it is sensational! When we got our table we were immediately seems by the head waiter for our order of drinks - both the signature aquavit and the "mumma" were delicious. Then he ushered us on to start at the table with herrings. After a feast of herring and Atlantic herring, it was time to start with more fish; salmon in a myriad of ways, paté made from seafood. Thereafter followed cold cuts, then warm meats, then... And, if you ever get confused where you are or what you "ought" to eat, there is a list on all tables. If you are a fan of either lutefisk or porridge ("risgrynsgröt") they have to be ordered separately but are part of the menu. But do remember to leave some room for the desserts... Lord! We left after 2.5 hours, bellies full, we were happy - and I remained full for three days after this! :D Service was very attentive, professional and kind. The meals were all excellent, and well-prepared. To some the (porcelain) pig head on the table was a turn-off although very traditional.

This is the view you get for your $$$$

This place had the best service of any restaurant I have been to for a while. All the reviews below that suggest you don't eat here... why not? The food is good! Ok it's not the cheapest place to eat but it has an outdoor roof terrace wirh a fantastic view of Stockholm. Maybe the inside part of the restaurant is run down but there's nothing wrong with the open area. They have a good selection of wine, staff who can help you choose it and are genuinely friendly, and the food though expensive is still tasty. I will surely return here next time I am in Stockholm :)

Pickled herrings are amazing. Now why can't we have then like this in the States?

Pretty hard to find if your just walking the streets in Gamla Stan but so worth it if you find it. Excellent drinks and while we were there, they had a beer special that was up my alley- so to speak. We also enjoyed some smoked salmon for an appetizer that was awesome as well. Some colorful lights and a large umbrella with some space heaters help to take the chill out of the late summer nights. And the bartenders were spot on with a drink or beer when needed. Just what we needed after some full days of walking through the historic town that is so full of great things to see. It's not often I want to try something a second time, but this space deserves a return trip.

For dessert there was a strawberry sambuca shake which was out of this world. I would definitely want to come back for dinner, but for a special occasion. The prices were a bit high (although I do think it's worth the price). Will definitely be back for drinks, though.

I will go through my archives and post what I have from the establishment. The employees were so sweet and truly were the cherries on top regarding our experience here. We had so much fun here we dropped over 400 bucks I feel in American Dollars. One drink we had was the gonzo. The bar manager who was there that day ( my visit was in February 2017) had recently won a Bacardi cocktail competition for Sweden and was be going on to the international competition and if she won, the gonzo would win some notoriety [think same status of staples like rum and coke, vodka tonic, etc etc, along those lines.] The club also sold a few finger foods which I don't recall too much but I do remember them being tasty. All in all pretty pricey bar in a nice area near Gamla Stan. If you need advice on visiting Sweden, go in the springtime or warmer weather as it is an country of several islands and best explored from the water.

Like Noma in Copenhagen, Frantzièn is booked for months at a time. Next day, I found his gastropub, the Flying Elk. Here you can sample the cuisine of Stockholm's favorite chef. The space is warm, open windows in summer; it's next to the water-- an optimal space to enjoy the breeze while getting a bite to eat, sample brews, an Aquavit and maybe another dish. And I did just that. For starters I had the Pan fried scallops, truffled scrambled eggs, smoked brown butter, pomme paille, covered with bonito style shaved truffles. Get this. I could have had 3 of these dishes easily. I think this is perfection of sea and earth with layer upon layer of earth manna: scrambled eggs with truffles, brown butter, the thinnest crisp potatoes and to add insult to the experience shaved tuffles on top. The dish wants you think it's Japanese, it's not...but so beautifully earthy, beautifully tasty and beautifully satisfying. My next dish the Veal Schnitzel Björn Frantzén: veal with triple cooked fries, roasted anchovy butter, red wine jus and sorrel salad was a symphony of taste contrasts: the panko-crisp texture of the veal with red wine jus (grapey delicious sauce albeit slightly overcooked cutlet), roasted anchovy butter with triple cooked fries (crisp into unctuous browned butter with a hint of anchovy) and the nicely tart (and teasingly pungent) sorrel salad. For dessert: "Eton Mess" Vanilla ice cream w/ raspberries & pink pepper meringue, strawberry & hibiscus mousse scented with roses . This was my fave dessert this trip. It's not just vanilla ice cream, it's amazingly well made silky yet subtle vanilla ice cream, that framed the summer raspberries; you scoop the strawberry/hibiscus mousse with a slightly pungent pepper meringue, the complex crumbles on your palate and you swear you've never had anything like this. The flower petals and dried raspberries on top of this "mess" sealed this dish for me as one my favorite desserts ever. A sauterne and a coffee later, the day seemed perfect. I loved this dish so that on one of my other visits to Gamla Stan, I ordered it to go, to seal the flavors in my memory as we strolled through the cobbled streets of this magnificent city, giddy. Loved it. Coming back. Visits: 2 Tip: Come hungry.
