After reading mixed reviews my boyfriend and I were a little hesitant to check this place out, but I am so glad we decided to keep our reservations. Both of us were looking to try some fish in Stockholm and The Flying Elk's fish and chips did not disappoint! The cod is very well battered and fried perfectly, the fries are great as well, and it all comes with a great curry mayonnaise for dipping. You also get some house-made pickled vegetables that add a great acidity element to the meal! We both enjoyed a couple beers and walked away super satisfied. We originally had reservations for the main dining room, but wanted to check out their "back bar" after doing some research, and I would highly recommend it! The back bar is a little less formal, dimly lit, and gives off a good vibe for relaxing, enjoying a beer, and eating some tasty food. Superb lunch. Frantzièn is one of Stockholm's premier chefs to experience and wanted to try the main resto on my last visit but couldn't get a reservation. Like Noma in Copenhagen, Frantzièn is booked for months at a time. Next day, I found his gastropub, the Flying Elk. Here you can sample the cuisine of Stockholm's favorite chef. The space is warm, open windows in summer; it's next to the water-- an optimal space to enjoy the breeze while getting a bite to eat, sample brews, an Aquavit and maybe another dish. And I did just that. For starters I had the Pan fried scallops, truffled scrambled eggs, smoked brown butter, pomme paille, covered with bonito style shaved truffles. Get this. I could have had 3 of these dishes easily. I think this is perfection of sea and earth with layer upon layer of earth manna: scrambled eggs with truffles, brown butter, the thinnest crisp potatoes and to add insult to the experience shaved tuffles on top. The dish wants you think it's Japanese, it's not...but so beautifully earthy, beautifully tasty and beautifully satisfying. My next dish the Veal Schnitzel Björn Frantzén: veal with triple cooked fries, roasted anchovy butter, red wine jus and sorrel salad was a symphony of taste contrasts: the panko-crisp texture of the veal with red wine jus (grapey delicious sauce albeit slightly overcooked cutlet), roasted anchovy butter with triple cooked fries (crisp into unctuous browned butter with a hint of anchovy) and the nicely tart (and teasingly pungent) sorrel salad. For dessert: "Eton Mess" Vanilla ice cream w/ raspberries & pink pepper meringue, strawberry & hibiscus mousse scented with roses . This was my fave dessert this trip. It's not just vanilla ice cream, it's amazingly well made silky yet subtle vanilla ice cream, that framed the summer raspberries; you scoop the strawberry/hibiscus mousse with a slightly pungent pepper meringue, the complex crumbles on your palate and you swear you've never had anything like this. The flower petals and dried raspberries on top of this "mess" sealed this dish for me as one my favorite desserts ever. A sauterne and a coffee later, the day seemed perfect. I loved this dish so that on one of my other visits to Gamla Stan, I ordered it to go, to seal the flavors in my memory as we strolled through the cobbled streets of this magnificent city, giddy. Having eaten at Michelin 3* Frantzén some thirty hours prior, a study in refinement rarely matched anywhere in worldwide, it was for the first of two dinners that a table was reserved at The Flying Elk, Björn Frantzén's "Gastropub" yet another space like those from Ramsay and Keller that looks to cash in on its chef's name without offering good value. Located in Gamla Stan mere blocks from the original Frantzén but visibly larger in layout, a single floor offering both indoor and outside seating facing water, it was immediately on time at 17h00 that guests approached the hostess stand, indoor seating requested given the sun's angle but neither windows nor shades offering much protection from rays that had already heated the room past temperatures comfortable for dining. Offering traditional Scandinavian comfort Foods crafted to Björn's standards and Cook Book, both it and one dedicated to his daughter with IDDM available for purchase or perusal, it was immediately upon seating that Staff informed diners that Fish and Chips were not available this evening, the Swedish Meatballs featured on a Kids Menu also probably something most Adults will pass on as they cost 10 SEK per year on the planet. Dividing the offerings into Snacks, Starters, Mains, Classics and Desserts, a Tasting Menu dogmatically offered only to the whole table even if other diners are willing to match course-for-course a la carte at higher cost, it was not long after ordering that sweet and spicy Cheese Puffs landed alongside pricy Pork Rinds, the ~10 SEK per bite cost about 10x what such things cost minus benign Chipotle Dip in Mexico or even the United States. Charging approximately 200 SEK per Appetizer, luxury ingredients combined with real estate costs and accolades something one must accept to dine at The Flying Elk, it was after requesting more water but before opting to move out of the sun that potted King Crab beneath Citrus Hollandaise and Carrots was joined by "Signature" Scallops, a decidedly decadent dish justifying such a designation with fluffy Eggs and Truffles swimming in Butter at the base and crispy Potatoes on top. Now resituated, a self-made choice that did not seem to sit well with the waitress, it was on recommendations that Schnitzel was sharable that just one "Main" was requested, 295 SEK justified by thinly pounded Veal with a crisp yet oilless Crust plus briny Butter, Roasted Potatoes and traditional Red Wine Sauce. Using the Anchovy Butter liberally on both the roasted Spuds and triple-cooked Fries that even Heston Bumenthal would be happy with it was after deciding to purchase a signed copy of "Lagar mat for sugna diabetiker och annat folk" that sweet tooths were indulged, Frantzén's Sticky Toffee Pudding not as moist or luxurious as many found in England but both the Eton Mess and seasonal Rhubarb Crumble with a sidecar of Vanilla Custard setting a high standard in terms of flavor, texture and presentation. read more

We didn't have reservations but were able to get a table in the back (beer?) room. So many things on the menu sounded good we had trouble deciding. We started with the crispy pork rinds and gougeres. Both were good but not great. The pork rinds oddly lacked flavor. But the black pepper mayo was quite good. The gougeres had good flavor but somehow weren't hot. The jalapeños added some nice spice. I went with the seared scallop. Wow was it amazing. So much flavor in one little dish. So rich and salty and creamy all at once. The pic doesn't do it justice. Husband said the wings were really good. The umami sandwich (appetizer) was huge. Butter fried bread is genius. And oh so tasty. Really enjoyed The Flying Elk, despite the location (not a huge fan of Gamla Stan: choked with tourists). The restaurant is bright & unassuming, the staff really friendly & attentive, & the menu is Franzèn so ya know it'll be good. It didn't disappoint. We went VERY early (pre-concert dinner), which may or may not make a difference to experience. We had the Gougeres & truffle popcorn to share as starters, I thought the Gougeres were brilliant, but while the popcorn was fine (& the others liked it a lot) i am a heathen and popcorn isn't giant on my love-list. For mains, I had the spicy burger which was terrific. The salmon looked amazing, but my friend scarfed it before I could try it. The wine was recommended, & I didn't like the first Cote du Rhone, which was immediately swapped out for a Nebbiolo, which was delicious. If you're in Gamla Stan & want bistro - as opposed to, say, Den Gyldene Freden - go. It was really good. read more

In terms of our expectations, they were pretty high for The Flying Elk. The menu reminded us of a lot of the modern American restaurants that we love at home with a Swedish twist. And with a top Swedish chef at the helm, we were psyched. Our experience started off a little strange when we asked about gluten-free options. For being one of the highest-end restaurants we dined in in Sweden, I was shocked by the lack of knowledge on the part of the staff about what on the menu was or could be made gluten-free. It was the only time in Sweden I felt truly nervous that my dietary restrictions would be a problem. The wine and beer selections were great, so no complaints there, but our main entrees were just so so. My "Roasted duck from Navarra with onion crème & deep fried sage" was very pretty to look at but way too salty. Any flavors were just overpowered by sodium. And the cut of the duck breast wasn't as high of a quality as I could have expected. My better half had the "Fillet of Iberico pork, wild mushrooms & crispy onions on toast," and he was more satisfied than I was, but not overly enthusiastic. He finished with the "Pancake with cloudberry and vanilla ice cream" (mostly we love the cloudberry jam from Ikea) that looked beautiful - wish I could have tried it. This place is good! We actually are in the back bar area as we didn't plan ahead for reservations. Chicken wings-soooo good and I don't even like wings. I just wish there was more. The blue cheese flavor and buffalo mixed was fantastic Gouda puffs delicious but again, kind of small Burger was great! Probably one of the top 5 in my life and I'm a burger whore Chicken sandwich was good but my least favorite compared to everything else. Came here with a massive appetite after a day walking around Stockholm and didn't leave disappointed. The beer menu was good (I particularly enjoyed the locally-brewed Sleepy Bulldog Pale Ale) and the food was excellent. I got the tasty fried pork rinds with creamy chipotle sauce and the absolutely delicious "Spice Girl" burger with fries. Staff was very friendly and accommodating -- the main restaurant was completely booked for the night but they quickly found a place for me in the pub area. If you're looking for great meal in a welcoming atmosphere that isn't outrageously expensive, I'd recommend checking out the Flying Elk. read more

And I almost fell off my chair when I was served a Bulldog in a glass of LESS than 40 cls at a amazing 60 SEK!! OMG! Anyhow, we came here around 5 on a Thursday evening and it was queuing up for tables already. We waited in line but could then go straight to the bar/pub to the left a bit further in. The bar itself is really small. There's a table for eating guests in the inner room as well. The food might be good but don't go here for just the beer. Not worth it. The burger her came highly recommended by a friend. Apparently this place was opened by a two star Michelin chef. I came during lunch and tried the tartare and the burger with the triple fried fries. tartare - delicious burger - juicy with fluffy bun and the right amount of cheese. I approve! triple fried fries - wow. these taste like buttery buttery croissants, not fries. They are super savory and while delicious, I'm glad I did not get my own full order. I was kind of surprised by the Yelp rating here, but after reading reviews and thinking back to my visit, I am not so surprised anymore. My friend (who was visiting Sweden from the US) and I decided to pop in for "Frunch". She had the foie gras macaron, which was totally precious and she LOVED IT, but it is, as expected, a bit overpriced. It's 45kr. For one. One whole macaron, that really, should be called a mini macaron as it was only maybe 3-4cm across. We both had the cougeres and they were tasty. I ordered the Umami sandwich; confit lamb, deep-fried onions, it was really, really, really good. So good I can still imagine how it smelled. I would definitely eat it again. The cocktail menu was great and the drinks we ordered matched our expectations for sure. That being said, I was really put off by the service, it felt SUPER inattentive. It was busy, but not overwhelmingly so; I couldn't understand why we basically had to flag someone down to get a refill on our water. It took FOREVER just to get menus and order and then once we were served it's like, to be honest, we probably could have dined and ditched. Someone was sitting at the table next to ours and we got the impression it was someone marginally famous. Like, in a douchey reality tv kind of way. Everyone that worked in the restaurant came up to their table to chat, meanwhile we waited forever just to get some goddamned water. It would have been a perfectly lovely lunch otherwise, but it just felt hampered by the lack of service in light of the never-ending parade of staff visits to our neighbor's table. I was traveling in Stockholm for a conference and my meal charges were covered by work, so I decided to try this nice restaurant that is normally a little above my food budget. The main restaurant area was fully booked so my friend and I went to the back area which serves the same menu. We had a great experience there! The Flying Elk is one of my favorite restaurants. The restaurant is really beautifully decorated and the food is beautifully presented. I travel quite often to Stockholm and a lunch or dinner at The Flying Elk is always a priority. I have had among my absolute best burger experiences here with 'The Iron Lady Burger' and 'The smoky Pistol Pete burger'. Two completely sublime burgers that are definitely among my favorites. Prices are a bit high, but the food is definitely worth it. Anything negative? Only slightly. The service used to be quite good, but I have experienced a little unfriendly staff occasionally. At the same time there is a change in the menu extremely often. This may be good, but a bit annoying if it happens too often. All in all, this is however a fantastic restaurant with a lot of good food, beautiful surroundings, but also a relaxed atmosphere. read more

Still, my score is low because I didn't like the food. - I tried some chicken wings, but didn't like the taste of them. - I tried some kind of chips, and while others of the group did like them, I personally didn't. - There was some truffle popcorn: I didn't like that. - My main course was the Arctic fish. It looked nice and was well prepared. But I discovered this wasn't my cup of tea: I didn't like it that much. Ok, too bad for me, but the rest of the table had similar experiences: - A lot of people were complaining about how salty all the food was. Some people didn't finish their dishes because of that. - One person almost had to puke at the toilet, but prevented that by going outside and get some fresh air. - I personally didn't trust the food anymore, so I didn't order any desert. But the people who did, complained about it. One person ordered ice cream, but due to the thick consistency she didn't like it, and passed it on until the third person trying it liked it enough to finish it. Yes, the portions are small, but that's something you know when you go to an expensive restaurant: you have to take a whole menu to be properly filled, and not just order a main dish. Since we had eten well at a food court earlier, the main course was enough. But one person ordering a schnitzel was really surprised that there were no side dishes with it: she just got the schnitzel, and that's it. Be aware of that when you order. I was visiting Stockholm from the U.S. and wanted to try some good local food with local beers. After searching TripAdvisor and Yelp, I decided to try The Flying Elk. My hubby ordered the Grilled Wolf fish because Wolf fish sounded interesting. It turned out to be a very nice piece of fish over stewed vegetables and a soup-like sauce. It was very moist as if it was steamed rather than grilled. We were expecting more of a charred/grilled exterior so the moisture was a little unexpected but it still tasted good. I order the Beef & Chicken pie topped with foie gras mousse. I'm from California, which has banned foie gras, so I try to get it any opportunity I can. Once again the dish came out looking nothing like I expected but it tasted good. The pie filling was hearty and tasted a bit like a beef meatloaf. The foie gras mousse had a nice foie gras flavor and complemented the beef flavor very well. However, overall the texture of the dish was mushy. They had beers on tap as well as bottled. But because The Flying Elk was more of a British pub than a Swedish bar, there weren't that many local beers. I chose one of the few local brews they had on tap and it was good (I forget the name). Be warned that in general food and beers in Stockholm is expensive and this was no exception. I think the pint of beer alone was about $15. The Flying Elk was good but I didn't think this place stood out. For that price, I rather go to an establishment that offered more local dishes. read more

Loved it! Had 2 starters and 2 mains. The scallops were delicious in the sauce. The tartar was tasty. The cod was perfectly seasoned. I've eaten here twice in the past two years of coming to Stockholm. The food here is solid good. First time I came, I had the kalix löjröm förätter and the veal wienerschnitzel. Was just delicious. But especially the kalix löjröm which was served on a beautiful butter toast and whipped bits of butter. Simple but amazing. Second time, I ordered the kalix löjröm förätter and fish and chips for brunch. OMG - the chips were addictive and the fish was battered so sinfully I had to stop myself from eating all the crunchy, fatty, deep fried batter. The lightness and buttery nature of the cod inside was just perfect. I will come back again on my next visit to this beautiful city. read more

My husband and I tried this restaurant on the recommendation of our concierge at the Hotel Nobis. We were not disappointed! We weren't that hungry so we decided to just split the Truffle Mac and Cheese and the Fish and Chips. The truffle mac and cheese was probably the best I have had. Unfortunately the portion size was a bit ridiculous. It was basically in the size of a dollhouse dish. Flavors were great though, I just wish they had a normal sized portion of it though. The fish and chips were a way better portion size though and the everything was cooked quite nicely. The flavors were spot on and it filled us up. The pea guacamole was interesting with the minty flavor, I can't say it was my favorite thing on the plate, but it was worth a try. I feel so strongly about elements of this place, that it's brought me out of Yelp hibernation (Yelp-ernation?). First, I am not a fan of these ginormous, sprawling Stockholm restaurants where every night's like a wedding reception and there are multiple bars and dining rooms tucked under the same roof. If you want to open a bar, open a bar. Why do I have to walk through a giant restaurant to get to it? Yeah, sure the vibe is different in each of the elements within the establishment, but combined it makes for a Disney-esque feel--a bunch of themed rooms. Want a beer? Go to the middle beer bar! A cocktail? Take it upstairs to the corner cocktail bar! Wine? There's a wine bar too, bien sur! This is all in addition to the main dining room. I have now experienced three of the four elements of the Flying Elk, and the rundown is such: Main dining room: very interesting menu, but there was a disturbing smell (a little something chemical, a little something bodily) that smacked us in the face upon entry and made us wonder whether we should stick around and risk finding its source. We did stay, and our uninvited dinner guest was a silent but assertive presence throughout the meal. Yuck. Then, the service was the pits. Our waiter could NOT be bothered. Well, he missed out on an extra round of drinks... wait, so did we. The s-l-o-w service was extra-apparent due to the lack of bread. If you're going to have terrible service, at least have your crew drop a basket of some gratis baked goods on the table. It takes virtually no time and makes your "guests" much less cranky that they are being ignored. As for the food, we took the Fish and Chips, which was pretty meh. The best part was the mushy peas. Also tried the oxbringa, which was OK. The presentation was hip and nice, and the food was fine. Nothing special. And I had the salad, which was over-over-over dressed. The elements of the salad (green beans, potatoes, smoked whitefish) were great, but half the amount of dressing would have sufficed. Cocktail corner: this is the best part! Come in the separate entrance, have a burger and a cocktail, and pretend you're not in a themed room of a giant establishment. Because the cocktail bar on its own is enough. The cocktails are beautifully crafted and the menu is interesting and the burgers are good. The only "beef" here is the price. The burgers are expensive (180 kr, I believe) AND if you want fries with your burger (duh.), you have to pay for them. Gaston wine bar: this is the part that spurred me to get reviewin' again. I will start with a big "SERIOUSLY?!?" Is this place for real? I have NEVER seen prices so overblown for wine by the glass. I support your French-leaning wine list, but I am no sucker. Everywhere else in the world, things are becoming more egalitarian--you can have amazing wine all over Paris for less than 1/3 of the cost of ONE glass at Gaston. I think the cheapest glass I could find was 139 kr (besides the house muscadet, which was 90-something, I believe), but most were well in the 200 kr range. I repeat, SERIOUSLY?! And the beer was no bargain, either. 57 kr for a Demory? Glad you sell it, but still--not cool. I realize we are not in France, but with those prices it feels like you are really rubbing it in. When will Stockholm take a cue from vibrant cities like Paris or San Francisco where you can enjoy great wine and food in small restos or wine bars at prices that are not overblown? I think they must exist here, but they are definitely too rare. And the Flying Elk establishment makes this all too apparent. read more

Came here for dinner my first night in Stockholm. The food was fantastic- I had the Reuben burger which was done really nicely. The fries came with a garlic aioli which was out of this world good. My dining companions had the short rib stroganoff and the artichoke dish with egg and they said both dishes were phenomenal. They had a great selection of beer, wine and cocktails. This place was a little pricier than what I was expecting, but the food was absolutely heaven. We sat in this little back section below a stairwell that said "the Corner club" and "closed". There was a restaurant in the front main area that I think might have been different than where we sat. I'm not sure, it was a little confusing. We both picked pretty tame dishes compared to the more adventurous options on the menu. The fish and chips were amazeballs! The best i've ever had! My friend's sandwich was amazing too! AWESOME!!!! We ate downstairs in the cozy, more casual part of the restaurant that has the same menu. The pork filet on toast points was to die for and the sticky pudding dessert had fabulous mixture of different tastes...toffee, butterscotch, hazelnuts. So so yummy!!! I would say get the burger if you want to check this place out. That is what we noticed most of the patrons order, so we ordered and enjoyed it, maybe even my top best burgers. We also got the veal schnitzel to try. It was okay. The red wine sauce that was poured on top was the best part, but it shouldn't have been the main taste of flavor.
