I've been dreading writing this review because I had to put my cat down here, but it's time. I came across Good Ground while looking for a nearby vet to bring my cat to when she suddenly stopped eating and drinking. My cat has had kidney disease for the past few years along with other issues that I'd been managing fairly successfully with medications, but I could tell something was really wrong and needed to find someone to take her to while I was out here (we live in Astoria). I chose Good Ground due to proximity and the fact that they had an appointment available later that day. I called my vet in Astoria to forward over her records so they'd have all the info and know her health had been on the decline. It was a long wait from the time we got there until we were seen, and when Dr. Swanson finally saw her she didn't seem to know anything about my cat's history even though I'd forwarded the records. I filled her in, and she recommended bloodwork and a urinalysis to learn more about what was going on, as well as giving her some fluids and a shot of antibiotics since her urine looked cloudy. I asked the vet if there was any food she recommended for cats in this state to entice them to eat. She recommended some kind of organic food you could only order online...I was looking for something that was easily accessible that was palatable. My cat didn't improve and got worse, so the next afternoon I was eager to talk to someone to find out what the bloodwork had found. The front desk person told me that the vet usually calls at the end of the day to talk about bloodwork but again I reminded her that my cat had not eaten or drank anything in days and that this situation is more urgent than that, that I'd want to bring her back in today if something could or couldn't be done. I finally heard back from the vet who confirmed my worst suspicions -- her kidney disease had progressed dramatically, and on top of that she had a terrible UTI. The vet kept calling my cat a he during this time which was also upsetting on top of getting this news, wasn't her gender anywhere in these results? She then talked about hospitalizing my cat for three days and giving her an IV to flush out her kidneys. I ask what the outcome of that would be. Best case, she tells me my cat lives another month and then we're right back where we are now. Worst case, my cat gets hospitalized for three days, comes home and crashes and we have to put her down anyway. I guess don't really know how folks are out here about their pets. I know it's the Hamptons, so maybe people here feel more inclined to throw money at the problem. But money aside (my insurance would've covered it), I couldn't imagine putting my cat through a hospital stay and have her last days of life be spent in a strange place which I know she hates, only to have her die a day later anyway. I was surprised that I had to be the one to bring euthanasia up in this conversation and not the vet. While I was waiting for this bloodwork, I had called my vet in Astoria who agreed that euthanasia was likely the best option for my cat at this stage. If you've had a pet for as long as I had my cat (14 years), you know when something is really, really wrong. Throughout her illness I'd always been so afraid I wouldn't know when the right time to put her down would be. If you have a chronically ill pet, I can promise you, you'll know. I will say that putting my cat down here was the kindest experience it could have been. The entire staff were extremely respectful and communicative during every part of the process. They even gave me a plaque with her pawprints imprinted in it as well as a paper with her ink prints. I don't know that Good Grounds is the best option in an emergency situation, but I do think that for more straightforward, non-emergent issues it would be a decent vet choice. read more

We recently switched to Good Ground Animal Hospital and couldn't be happier! The staff is amazing - so nice and welcoming from the moment you call to make an appointment. Dr. Spanbock is fantastic! We recently adopted two kittens, one of which had tested positive for feline leukemia (prior to us adopting her from the shelter) so we needed to have her retested and both kittens were due for a few more vaccines. We were a bit anxious while we waited for the test to come back, but Dr. Spanbock really made us feel at ease. He answered all of our questions, explained everything thoroughly, and he's got jokes! He's wonderful with people and pets! Thankfully, the test came back negative, so a happy ending for us, but during those stressful few minutes, we really felt comfortable talking with Dr. Spanbock and for that, I am so appreciative. Yesterday we had our second appointment because one of our kittens started limping over the weekend and we had no idea why. The kitten was seen by Dr. Swanson, and she was also incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and even though the moment I brought the kitten into the office she stopped limping and was walking like a champion, I was never made to feel silly for bringing her in (even when I referred to her front paws as arms). We had another great experience in the office. The staff at the front desk are all so nice and the office is super clean. The whole experience with Good Ground has been phenomenal and we look forward to bringing our pets there for years to come! read more

I had an emergency situation with my dog. I called the office and was helped immediately with my issue. They told me I could come in before they closed and I was seen within 5 minutes. The staff went above and beyond with the comfort of my dog while we dealt with the emergency at hand. Dr Spanbock and his staff are extremely sweet and supportive at all times. I am 68 years old and have never written a review, either good or bad. however I feel the time has come. we have used good ground for the past 4 years, ever since we moved out here. my dog is almost 16 years old. last week she stopped eating for a day, even treats. we called good ground on Monday and were told they couldn't see us till Friday. i told my wife "let's wait till morning and see how she is". in the wee hours of the morning, we woke up and there was a lot of blood on our bedroom floor, with a little diarrhea. first thing in the morning, I call goodground and said it was urgent. could they please squeeze us in. they said no, Friday was the soonest. we called westhampton animal hospital based on a friend's recommendation. they were full as well, but said "come down, you may have to wait, but we will get you in." in the waiting room we coincidentally met someone who went thru the same thing a year ago. to make a long story shorter, our dog is ok and I love our new vet. anyone who goes to goodground vs westhampton is making a big mistake. Dr Walker is an amazing doctor.   She is always there and really cares about our fur babies. Bella has arthritis and she recommended laser sessions, some treats for her joints and the result was amazing. Dr. Spanbock and his staff are wonderful, not only super professional, but also very caring and knowledgeable . My regular Vet is in NJ, I was out on the Island for the summer , my dog got infested with ticks and was in horrible pain. I went to 2 Vets and they wouldn't take him. I drove to Good Ground and not only did they take him immediately, they comforted my dog as soon as he got into the office, treated him and a short time later my dog was on his way to feeling himself. Dr Will Spanbock was amazing with my bichapoo that was bleeding from rectum. He quickly assured us that after taking X-rays she would be fine with som antibiotics. He said we could bring her back in morning if we felt she was not better. To our amazement she was fine and we were able to continue our vacation during Easter Holiday. Dr. Spanbock and Dr. Walker are both wonderful, caring, astute vets who are wonderful with my dog Weasel Boy. Weasel Boy has degenerative disc disease all up and down his spine. In addition to pain medicine management, which helps keep my dog pain free, they offer laser treatments which are very helpful. The entire staff is wonderful and super helpful, for instance they cut up tiny pills into quarters for me so Weasel Boy has the correct dose, not an easy task. While in the waiting room on our first visit Weasel Boy shook and cried. Now he can't wait to get out of the car to go visit his many friends at Animal Clinic Hampton Bays. By the way, I wound up at this clinic after two veterinary clinic misdiagnoses. read more

Dr. Walker is now at a more convenient location on Montauk Hgy. in Hampton Bays, NY. Dr. W. and her staff, especially Jen, are terrific and compassionate professionals. We totally trust her with our pit/boxer mix, Butch, as we did with our beloved brindle boxer, Sophie, who passed 2 years ago. Both of our dogs suffered from spinal arthritis - not exactly life threatening in itself, but it presents a fall risk, which is life altering. Sophie had stomach cancer as well, and Dr. W. made her last days as happy as possible - and she and her staff supported my husband and me through her tough last months. I never get the impression we're being taking advantage of financially and feel satisfied that all is being done that's possible to keep Butchy as pain free and happy in what are certainly the last leg of his earthly journey. We've been to several vets in Brooklyn and Long Island and this is our favorite. All of the doctors and techs are so welcoming and gentle with our furry friends, especially our 14 year old mutt who is winding down. We have appreciated how they have never tried to force us to buy anything unnecessary or do anything extreme for our dogs that would cost a ton of extra money. We have been using this vet for about 7 years since we moved to Hampton Bays. Dr. Walker, Dr. Spanbach and all of the warm and caring staff have been wonderful. Our three dogs and two guinea pigs have been patients there and they even gave us a referral for one of our chickens this summer. They call after every visit (and we have had a lot of visits!) just to check in and make sure all is ok. They never try to push services or procedures but give all the options and their opinion to help us make the best decision. We lost our dog Bailey two years ago and they were so kind and comforting. Now our 15 year old dog Scooter is having some issues and I am so glad that they are our vet. I highly recommend them. We have used a lot of different vets on both North and South fork and they are hands down, the absolute best!! read more

I see all these great reviews for Spanbock, but let me tell you about my experience with him and how it destroyed my life. Nine years later, I still haven't recovered. One morning my dog was throwing up and just laying down, refusing to stand, in obvious pain. I took him to the vet (a few weeks earlier I had specifically asked to not see Dr. Spanbock anymore because he had led us astray with our other dogs healthcare) and as an emergency Spanbock was who we saw. I was a mess and crying. The whole time I was in there he spoke to my mother, and basically refused to even look my direction (I assume because of the previous complaint I made about him.) He told me my dog was fine and I was overreacting. He also said that they could do a $300 test to check to see if there were any blockages but that performing that test would be CRUEL and unnecessary. He reiterated I was overreacting. Against my better judgement, I relented. I have to live with that. Spanbock gave my dog a shot to make him stop vomiting (which ended up making things worse and part of the reason my puppy died later that night) and it worked for a few hours. Around 3-4 PM my puppy threw up again. I took him back to the vet, where Spanbock finally agreed to do the test. During the test, my puppy threw up blood and the medicine they gave him, they couldn't even finish performing the test but they knew now for sure his intestines were blocked. I'd also like to point out, that their inability to complete the test did not deter them from charging me over $300 for it still. After that, Spanbock said he could do surgery, but there wouldn't be anyone there at night so I should really take him to the animal ER in Riverhead. Pretty sure the real reason was he didn't want to do surgery at the end of the day. Well, I take my poor pup to the ER and they had another dog in surgery so we had to wait. By the time they could operate on him, his vitals weren't great and things were looking dim. When they finally did the surgery, we find out his intestines had twisted and were 80% rotted. The vet told me that if was 70% or less he would have had a much better chance of survival and could lead a somewhat normal life. They even showed me a real picture of his insides, an image that haunts me to this day. They told me I would be cruel to do the surgery, so I told them to close him back up. They let me see him while they got the paperwork to euthanize him, He looked so frail and I remembering holding his head and crying, asking him to please just go and not make me have to put him to sleep. He died in my arms a few seconds later. I thanked him for not making me have to euthanize him. I asked the vets if I had brought him in earlier would he have lived and they said most likely. That's when the guilt started. If I had listened to myself and not Spanbock, if I had insisted he do the test that morning, my puppy would be alive. I can never forgive myself for that and I have to live with it. Oh and the best part is, I was so distraught when my puppy died that shortly after I started fighting with my fiancee, told him I needed time and some space to get over this. Three months to the day after my puppy died, my fiancee got into a car accident that took his life. Had I been with him, he wouldn't have died (he only wore his seat belt when he was with me and he was going to a place I usually accompanied him). Those two things will always be related to me as well now. Also, the 4,000+ dollars my mom and I spent at the ER, (and that's not including what Spanbock charged me) led to our financial downfall and eventually forced us to move off Long Island. One day destroyed my entire life. I guess what I want people to know is to not trust Spanbock's judgement. If you think he wrong or feel uncomfortable with his suggestions in any way, TRUST YOURSELF. Get a second opinion, don't let him shame you into listening to him. If you love your pups like I loved mine, trust your instincts and don't ever let a vet push you to do something you don't feel comfortable with. I can't even say my puppy's name most days and I left it out of this review to make it easier to write. I still am sitting here in tears though. read more

I am forever grateful to Dr. Will Spanbock for restoring mobility to my dachshund Cody's hind legs-He was totally paralyzed when I brought him in recently & within 3 days, I was able to bring Cody home-& slowly but surely, within the next 3 weeks, he is walking again! Dr Spanbock has been taking care of Cody & his female companion Grace, also a miniature dachshund, since The Animal Clinic opened-& I couldn't be happier with everyone there- but this latest incident,which was ultimately a question of life or death, proved Dr Spanbock to be the calmest most competent vet I could hope for!We are all lucky to have their practice in our area. read more

Dr. Will Spanbock aka Dr. Platinum has a sixth sense when it comes to our furry babies. He knew EXACTLY what was wrong with my Precious even before he examined her. Her back legs were bothering her. That he told me is a telltale sign For diabetes. She had kidney issues as well. He took such good care if her. Dr. Walker is also amazing. She was the first doctor that I met when I moved to Hampton Bays. I was told Precious who was a rescue was 4. Dr. Walker took xrays of her and found that Precious had arthritis in her spine and said Precious was most probably 8 or older. Dr. Walker too has a sixth sense about your pet. I went to FIVE vets in NYC where I lived at the time and not one diagnosed her correctly. The staff Jen, office manager, Jenn, Billie, Lilly, Kayleigh, Nick, went out of their way to help in any way they could to make Precious have a great life! Thank you! read more

Dr. Spanbock is just a great guy, never mind being a great Veterinarian. When he was working in Eastport he was my vet for a few years. I moved but, I would have switched to Hampton Bays to have him care for my cats. After moving to Arizona one of my cats had a very dire emergency. I called Will back in NY because I trust him and he spent time with me on the phone and did not sugar coat what I was about to deal with. My cat did not make it but, my trust in Dr. Spanbock helped guide us to the right decision for our little guy. The world needs more people like Will. Thank you. read more

Dr. Spanbock is absolutely the best vet I've ever been to. When my cat, Leo, was diagnosed with lymphoma he did the absolute best he could to make sure he was comfortable. He didn't sugar coat or push any surgeries, he was realistic and straight to the point while still being incredibly empathetic about how hard the situation was. Since then, we've brought all our kitties to him and he's been absolutely wonderful with them! read more

My kitty was injured so had an abscess and because he had a flea or two, they refused him proper care, but still charged me a full $250 for work not done since, I later had to drain the abscess myself. Then they charged me for a follow up visit where the vet refused again to see sent a technician to see the patient. This decision was based on the assumption that I wouldn't know a 16 year old boy from a veterinary professional. This office needs a dictionary and then have the vet look up the term "fraud" and familiarize himself with all the deeds that qualify as such. read more
