This was our first time at a Good Luck Macbeth production. we were there for Dracula, a Comedy of Terrors. We weren't sure what to expect as we have seen shows on Broadway, and other larger theaters, but we also love local theater. I don't know why we have not been to one of these shows before, the actors were outstanding, the production was hilarious, and we had a great time. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary...... Oh wait, it was noon on a hot August Saturday, when a friend and I came to GLM. GLM was hosting the traveling production of Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy. A fabulous way to enjoy this early 1800's American writer. After checking in at the door we were directed into the theater, where it was open seating. I recommend arriving 20-25 minutes early to get the best seat. After seating the first cocktail was passed out and a welcome to the show announcement was made. The first poem was Pale Blue Eye paired with a drink of the same name, with a pale blueberry eye floating in it. Emptied were picked up and The Cat's Meow (a spin on EAP's favorite drink, brandy milk) was paired with The Black Cat. After the first two readings, I was getting the subtle hint Poe didn't know how to properly keep murders a secret. Next was the famous The Raven accompanied by nevermore. The final story was The Masque of the Red Death and to sip while sitting on the edge of your chair. The brandy milk was my favorite. It reminded me a little of a Brandy Alexander. The other three cocktails were good and great play on the accompanying story. Although they were a bit too sweet for me. The performances were fabulous, the tortured well portrayed. The stage with limited props and a magical backdrops was perfect. It drew you into his small dark world. The cast was your crew. Creating cocktails, picking up empties, and performing. An incredibly hard working small group. It is not all dark and dreary. The Poe puns will have you chuckling along, or maybe that the the fourth cocktail I had. Now I'm curious about other similar productions. I would love to attend more like this. Be considerate- the seating is a bit tight. Try not to come and go. Also watch your drink, I wore some of the person's next to me. Great theater. Deadly fun concept. read more

This place has such an adorable intimate vibe for live theater. A small bar inside for libations alcohol and nonalcoholic. Parking can be a challenge as it's midtown and street parking so plan ahead! Such a great theater to perform for! Fully enjoyed it! We had quite a large cast and they did everything possible to help us feel like home, even offering complimentary tea for our voices. The back stage (behind the curtain is small with 15 cast members) especially stage right but the downstairs green room was huge! Plenty of seating and mirrors for everyone. Attended the Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy. 4 readings accompanied by 4 themed cocktails. Stage was lit by luminaries. Just before Act 1 the electricity went out over half the town. They carried on by candlelight - which made it that much more authentic. Cast & Crew handled it flawlessly. Great entertainment- then as we walked out into the lobby - lights came back on. I went to the Edgar Allen Poe event on Sunday with my good friends. We got to 'look ravishing' (it's so fun dressing up!) for the event and the venue has a quant old vibe - perfect for spooky shows. Please make your production of "Evil Dead" an annual event!! What a fabulous time at GLM! The staff, the decor, the overall direction and caliber of performances are all wonderful. Everyone seemed to just be loving life and I can't say enough good things about their Evil Dead production. It's hilarious, extremely well done, and absolutely must come back for another year! The seating is stadium style, and the seats themselves are okay. Not super comfy and definitely a tad narrow but they're decent enough. The sound quality of the performance was top notch. Parking can be a challenge if you want to park super close. But we managed to get within a couple of blocks and enjoyed our stroll through the neighborhood. It felt safe and was worth the walk to support this theater and it's talented actors! read more

I went to see Let the Right One In at Good Luck MacBeth recently. This is their Halloween offering and it is absolutely perfect. Spooky setting, murder, creepy kids and a vampire...this is one of my favorite stories. I've read the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist and I've seen both the Swedish and American movies so I'm very familiar with the source material. They did an amazing job with this. The actors were wonderfully cast and the production stayed true to the book. This was my first time at this location for Good Luck MacBeth. I opted for the VIP ticket with champagne service and I highly recommend the upgrade. My seat was in the front row and it made me feel completely immersed in the play. The Stage Manager, Christopher, was warm and inviting and very attentive with the champagne service. The experience made me feel special and appreciated. As an added bonus, there was a panel discussion with Christopher, the Director of the play and local horror celebrity Zomboo after the play. I can't recommend this play and this venue enough. From the perfectly creepy music being played before the start and at the intermission, the small venue and beautiful production and set, to the wonderful people volunteering, this was such a great, intimate experience. I will definitely be seeing the Christmas offering and I plan to purchase a season ticket for 2020--VIP of course. read more

This little theater group is awesome and put on some good entertainment. We have attended a number of shows previous to Covid. Sadly we missed out on our season tickets last year. Tonight was there first show back. It was an epic coming out. Support the local arts scene and see live performances. This theater group puts on really good shows. Their space is clean and had been spruced up. The have a bar with beer, wine, can cocktails, and some snacks. Everyone always has a smile on their face and willing to engage you in conversation including the guests. We are looking forward to attending The Colony in August/September. read more

This is a neat little theater located in midtown. Like that they have stadium type seating, so you can see more than the back of the head of the person in front of you. Theater was well kept, they had a bar for refreshment. The Reindeer Monologues was well done. Yes, it is a "dark" comedy, with lots of "adult" language, but the actors did a great job and the play was funny...as it was meant to be. Would definitely like to go see other works. read more

This is the first time we have been to a show in their new location in Midtown. We had gone to a play a coupe of years ago when they were downtown and were impressed by the quality of the production. We decided to go see their newest play "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea". The play looked intriguing and the original New York Production had gotten some very good reviews. The theater is a re-purposed retail space in one of the charming old buildings on Virginia street near St.Lawrence. It is in the same block as Wedge, Dreamers Coffee, Picasso & Wine, and Midtown Eats. Creme, Reno Public House and Chapel Tavern are also in the neighborhood. The biggest negative is the lack of parking in the area. I really don't mind walking, but it is a challenge finding a place to park in the area without fear of being towed. The space is cozy with a casual welcoming atmosphere. We bought our tickets on line with no problems and they had us on the list. They offer wine and beer and light snack in the small lobby and patrons are welcome to take the drinks to their seats. The performance venue is very intimate with room for about 50 people. I suspect the setup is adaptable. For this performance it was set up as an pit theater with the seats on raised steps with the stage area on the floor level. Really not a bad seat in the house. It was a little tight, but not uncomfortable. The stage was minimally set and it was a two person play. The show was presented without intermission and was about 90 minutes long. The production was perfect for this small space. We very much enjoyed the play - the acting was excellent, the story line was brutal and emotional. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. We look forward to attending many more shows here. read more

Wow! I really wasn't sure what to expect when I walked into GLM last night, but I must say myself, and everyone else there, was wowed. I knew I was going to see Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, a dark and gritty story about two people who'd led questionable existences coming together and falling in love. The story itself seemed straightforward, but the show was anything but. A simple set and two incredibly talented actors successfully portrayed these characters drawing the audience in, allowing them to feel the tough emotions of anger and hatred, and bringing them along to celebrate and laugh with well placed comic relief. This two man production was incredibly captivating, and had me scanning the 2014 schedule to see what's coming next. Who knew Reno had such great actors and playwrights? It's clear that Reno's arts and culture game is stepping up right alongside everything else, and I for one am proud to see this! If you've never been to a show at GLM, you really need to do it and make arts and culture part of your 2014 plan. GLM's shows are entertaining, inspiring, and most of all affordable, offering a "Pay What You Can" performance during each show and a Happy Hour Theater night when $40 buys 2 tickets and a bottle of wine. It's a great night out and you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself. But don't take my word for it. Check em out yourself! read more

I love seeing movies, especially indie films at art-house theatres, and it kinda killed me when I learnt on my on-campus interview for a position at the university that Reno did not have an art-house theatre. I wondered, where was I going to get my non-mainstream entertainment on twice a month? I am thankful that Michael T. introduced me to Good Luck Macbeth, which shows indie films and--even better--also puts on live performances. Seeing live theatre was not part of my upbringing, so in college and grad school I never thought, "I should go see a play." Seeing "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea" at Good Luck Macbeth, however, got me hooked. Don't get me wrong, I love me a movie (both mainstream and indie) any day of the week. There is just something so exciting about seeing a live production. I participated in the preview night for the Game Show Show with my Yelp acquaintances Michael T., Nancy V., Robert S., and Dale G. and had a blast being on stage and seeing the Utility Players do their thang as our opponents in Family Feud and The Money Pyramid. I came back as an audience member on the night that the Utility Players took on Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, and watching the show was great fun. Good Luck Macbeth's location is perfect: two doors down from Midtown Eats, around the block from Reno Public House, and near all sorts of other good things in the north Midtown area. I appreciate that they sell beer and wine and small snacks before the show and during intermission, and that they accept payment by credit card as well as cash. The folks who run Good Luck Macbeth are exceedingly friendly and community-oriented while still being mighty fine performers and businesspeople, proving wrong my nebulous and half-baked ideas about what "theatre" people are generally like. I look forward to attending future live performances, Films On Tap! events (indie film screenings with beer pairings from the folks at Craft), and Movie Musical Sing-A-Long events. I highly recommend checking out Good Luck Macbeth, especially to my fellow theatre newbies. read more

I participated in the "Preview Night" for the Game Show Show. I wasn't really sure how it was going to pan out. The small venue and everything built by hand didn't seem like it had that much promise. But when I arrived for the real Game Show Show it was a blast! I was part of the team that played against the Utility Players in Family Feud. They succeeded in making this feel like a real game show. They even had a "Vanna White" type gal. The Hostess of the show was really sharp and fast with the right responses. The second part of the show is a $10,000 Pyramid type thing. I was able to enjoy this from the audience and it didn't disappoint either. Whoever writes the stuff seems to have found funny and believable subject matter that transcends just "game show" and makes you laugh out loud. The space is really intimate. The seating is comfortable and close to the stage and action. I'm not a real Theatre buff or have live shows mapped out on my calendar, but this place just might change that for me. Some of the shows they have lined up seem to be interesting to me and the size of the venue makes it feel more like an experience than just a time to observe. The parking sucks, but as many people have said, "We are just spoiled in Reno." to never have to walk more than 2 blocks to anything. So just plan accordingly when you see one of these shows that the walk may be a few blocks further away than you had anticipated. That being said, the whole area is very attractive. read more

A must see before the last day at Good Luck Macbeth Theatre Company is the play Mrs Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge. A good way to spend a weekend night and get in a festive holiday mood. The play is hilarious and some of the characters are worth the price of admission to hear them deliver their lines. This was a great way to spend a night with friends. Tonight I visited GLM for the first time. The show was "Young Frankenstein." If you've never seen the play, it is a musical (unlike the movie). It's also a bit "racier" than the movie (not for children). The show was very well-done. The house was full (yep, sold out) and the audience loved it. If you are not looking for this theater you will pass right by it. Located on Virginia in the heart of Midtown, it is not noticeable. But what happens inside is defiantly something to remember and to be noticed. A small, mini stadium style theater. There are 45 seats ( I had to count). Being short, I was worried that a tall person would sit in front of me. Yes, it happened, but the way the seating was set up I could see and so could everyone else!! A carnival style ticket counter and a small foyer that does sell wine/beer/water before the show starts. We came after seeing a post on Facebook as to how good the production of "The Nether" was... GREAT was an understatement. Reviewing the production adds to the value of GLM. The selection of the perfect play for the venue is part of what made the experience a 5 plus star one. Simple and elegant stage and lighting made it a hit. The actors were perfect in their roles. "The Nether" was based on a very sensitive subject, and the portrayals of the characters more than brought it to life. The emotions that flowed through me watching the play and that go through my mind right now go to extremes on both ends... laughter to disbelief to tears to wondering why and how.... We are looking forward to the next production and will one of the firsts to buy tickets. read more

My first time here and what a delight. There are little touches that brought me back to some of the Off Broadway theaters back in NYC. I am looking forward to attending many more productions here. And speaking of productions, A PLAY ABOUT A DICK is an entertaining production with fine acting. We laughed, frowned, got thoughtful and wished there was a second act! Since I first posted I've seen a few more plays. In my original review I said GLM reminded me of off broadway back in NYC. The production of EQUUS I saw the other night was worthy of Broadway. The casting, the direction and the actors are all Tony caliber and I say that having seen Equus on Broadway with Leonard Nimoy as the Doctor. Thank you all for exceeding my expectations. I must say, GLM has really found its footing over the past few years, and they are currently consistently producing some of the best (and most affordable) local theatre in town! This fledgling company started out as a classical theatre company producing shows at First United Methodist (beautiful church across the street from The Jungle) in downtown Reno under its original director, Scott Reeves. They later moved to a location on S. Virginia street near Bruka Theatre, and gained a new artistic director in Chad Sweet. Sweet had a pulse on the development of the city (still in the bowels of the Great Recession of '08), and picked a great location in the soon to be up-and-coming Midtown district. GLM made Midtown cool before Midtown even knew what "cool" was, and they currently still operate in a cozy little space between Shea's and Dressed Like That. I had seen many shows at GLM (all of varying quality), but they really seemed to hit their stride with a local production of Stephen Sondheim's "Company" a few years ago. Sweet left the company shortly thereafter for a great gig as Technical Director for RLT, where he can build beautiful sets with a bigger budget. GLM was in a flux at that point, and many hands came on deck to keep the fledgling theatre afloat. Under the (current) capable hands of Joe Atack, educational director for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, GLM has really come into its own! GLM's team has their fingers on the pulse of relevant theatre, and they are making wise choices by choosing shorter plays (90 mins on average), and keeping their ticket prices affordable. A precedent was set many years ago that $20-$25 was the going rate for "professional" theatre in town, and some companies have raised their prices in accordance to that. I don't think that theatre companies are being greedy in this action, but I think that this cost increase is prohibitive to the potential theatre-goer. 2 tickets at $25 a pop + wine & dinner easily adds up to over $100, which is pretty costly for the average Renoite to do on a regular basis. I LOVE theatre and I want it to thrive, and I think a key piece of that is keeping ticket prices competitive with movie ticket prices. At $15 in advance, and $18 at the door, GLM is keeping theatre accessible for the average Renoite, and I love that! But let's get back to why GLM is so special. In addition to being affordable, they are really choosing great stories to tell, and they are telling them in 90 minutes! I have worked at and continue to support all of our local theatre companies, but I can't tell you how refreshing it is to enjoy some great theatre and be out at 9:00-9:30! This season's productions of HAND TO GOD and THE MOUNTAINTOP really blew me away! They have also done some amazing Halloween musicals (EVIL DEAD & SILENCE!). The house is intimate (about 45 seats or so), so it sells out easily, but I love the intimacy of the environment. There is literally not a bad seat in the house! The rapid development of Midtown and its increase in prices currently has GLM searching for a new home. I hope they find it, and that they continue to be able to offer affordable ticket prices for their shows. GLM is a company that you can walk into as a non-theatre goer and enjoy a really good show without needing to know anything in advance. And because it doesn't break the bank, you can actually afford to return! Seating is open, so make sure you come early to find parking and choose a seat to your liking, kick back, and enjoy the show! read more

Last night I had a chance to watch Evil Dead the Musical. Initially I knew nothing about it. I have to say it was FUNtastic. I was laughing hysterically. The performers were so talented. The play is full of singing, dancing and pretty silly overall. I would definitely recommend it. Be ready to be a part of the play if you choose to sit within first 4 rows. I'm a big fan of this little theatre on Virginia Street in Midtown. I saw "The Last Five Years" with a friend (wow, it's kind of hard to witness the breakdown of someone's relationship, even if only fictional) and I found the acting and the singing to be top-notch. It's not a dinner theatre, but you can order a bottle of wine to drink while watching the play. The only downside: One co-ed bathroom. And you know how I feel about those (see my review of The Living Room in Austin). Even so, I'd definitely come back here again. read more

Here is the verbiage from Brown Paper Tickets, the ticketing website for Good Luck Macbeth: "Note from the producer of Fun Home : Please be advised that house opens at 7:00pm and show begins at 7:30pm. Seating is unassigned, so arrive early to get first preference on seating. If you arrive past 7:30pm, GLM has the right to resell your tickets - without refunding - and depending on availability, may not be able to honor your tickets toward a future preference." Tonight, I was in my seat at 7:27 p.m., but I walked out at 7:43 p.m. because the production had not started and there was no sign that the production would begin in the immediate future. There were no medical emergencies or technical difficulties. Rather, the staff chose to accommodate latecomers again and again and again and again, thus delaying the production beyond any reasonable start time. Such bald contempt for patrons is very hard to fathom. As I silently walked out, a staff person said to me: "Thanks for your patience and have a good night." Obviously, my patience had already elapsed, and yet that staff member thought that sarcasm and even more contempt for a patron would be an appropriate response. It was not appropriate, and that employee or volunteer should be dismissed immediately. You need to ask yourselves why your standards are so low and your tastes so vulgar. Is it internalized homophobia? Are artsy people unworthy of respect and common courtesies? Or is it just rank incompetence? read more

Everyone loves a good community theater, and there's nothing not to love about Good Luck Macbeth! The theater is nice and quaint, with a small bar in the waiting room and no more than 100 seats, arranged in a stadium fashion. The shows here are unique and innovative. I have had the pleasure of seeing two shows - one a love story and one a sci-fi video game story. While I am more of a romantic and less of a sci-fi fan, I have to say, both shows were EXCELLENT! The actors are quite talented for community theater and even with a small, low-tech stage, they do a great job of setting the scenes. Prices are reasonable with tickets typically not being more than $20pp. Be sure to have this theater on your radar! Enjoy a dinner in midtown and don't miss an opportunity to catch a show here. (I'd been to MidTown Eats a bunch of times and did not even notice there was a theater less than a stones throw away.) The trial run of the Game Show Show was fun and I could tell we were all a bit nervous, even though it was a small stage! The MC was welcoming and ran both of the game shows with a smile on her face. This is a very cool venue, especially if you're a fan of local theater. The small foyer allows you to grab a snack and/or a glass of wine before your feature. Then, enter the mini stadium seating that allows for great viewing from any seat. My daughter and I came to watch the preview of "Memory Card", an intriguing play regarding the digital world we live in. The simple stage had some cool features with a tv screen and light columns that provided an illusion of tram travel within some of the scenes. Everyone from the actors, to the set designers, to the tech controls did a really fantastic job. This was my second visit, as I had come down before to watch my husband participate in the preview night of the The Game Show Show. That was an enjoyable night, too. Again, the stage set, actors, and tech control together put on a fun feature.
