I can't believe I've never been here before. From what I understand this has been here a long time. My daughter was here for spring break so I decided to look for a play. I looked online at Yelp and thought I would give it a try. The prices for the play are very affordable. For two people it was around $60.00. We decided to see the play "When We Were Young & Unafraid." This play was fantastic! The acting was incredible! I truly felt like I was watching an intense movie on the screen. The best play ever! Reno Little Theater is a small venue in Midtown. Close to a lot of nice cafes. Parking is limited but we arrived early and didn't have a problem. Light snacks and drinks are available to purchase. The people who took our name and sat us were so friendly! Love this venue! Will definitely return to see more plays! read more

Reno Little Theater (aka. RLT for short) has been a part of the Reno community for almost 100 years. They hosts a myriad of events ranging from their in-house theater productions to recurring music series and community events. The venue is versatile and accommodating for the different events I have attended at the space. I primarily visit RLT for their regular season productions which are affordable and well produced with local talent. During these types of shows, there are always drinks and light snacks available for purchase. I appreciate the variety of drinks available. There is usually 1 beer on draft as well as other canned options. Or, enjoy yourself a little more and do a canned cocktail! The staff is always friendly, and the facility clean. The parking can be a little difficult (as is the case for most places in Midtown), but as long as you arrive early you can find a spot within a block of the theater. Regardless of how much I like the show I am seeing, I know RLT will provide a space that is comfortable and welcoming. The schedule is thoughtful and community oriented, so it is likely to be an enjoyable event. read more

We have been regular attendees at RLT for awhile now and I am impressed with the professional level productions that we have seen over the last few years. We just went to see "The Cottage" . A bit of a farce on the "veddy" British drawing room comedies. The play itself got mixed reviews on its Broadway run. Mostly negative about the script, but very positive about the acting. I do occur with the tough NYC critics and yes, the whole set-up seemed a bit ridiculous, but the stunning cast pulled it off magnificently. British accents and all. Once you got past the silliness and the very predictable outcomes, it was a very enjoyable romp. he cast really kept the pace going through infidelity, interfamily drama, prat falls, sexual innuendo, and mass quantities of alcohol consumption. The acting was spot on and we enjoyed every cringeworthy moment of this well produced performance. I highly recommend attending this most professional community theater. read more

I have attended several plays and concerts here over the last few years. Recently, again wanting to support local entertainment, I went to hear some jazz. It was a long day, and knew I would arrive late, but assumed I would just wait for a break to be seated. (Although, for some incomprehensible reason they usually block the pathway behind the stands that would make sneaking in easier.). They had locked the door! The concessions lady opened it 8" to tell me that I wouldn't be allowed in! This was jazz, not a theatrical show. So much for supporting local arts. I will spend my money elsewhere. read more

This theater is near my neighborhood, and in ten years I finally attended. What a fabulous surprise. I really should catch more productions here. For me it is easy to walk to. There is some street parking and limited lot parking. The ticket box is right inside the door to the lobby. It can get a little congested coming in and those picking up will call tickets. You can purchase tickets online, there is a fee. I'm not sure how much since a friend made the purchase so we could all sit together. The ticket was around $25. The production we saw was While the Lights Were Out. A great comedic murder mystery. The set was the living room of a Bermuda mansion, and well done. We had third row tickets at the stage left side and could see the entire play from there. I really doubt there's a bad seat in the entire theater. Sound was also not a problem. The friend I attended with had a co worker that was in the play, hence our reason to go. I was surprised to see other people I knew in the play also. Their quality was really quite fabulous. The cast and the script left the crowd gasping and laughing quite a bit. For a small local production it is worth attending more often. And I shall be. read more

So I actually learned about this production on Yelp!! I was searching the events tab and there it was. I was mainly interested because of the title. I am a sucker murder mystery's. So I bought tickets and planned a little date night with the hubs! It's a very small venue but has comfy seats, a small bar with wine, beer, pre-mixed canned cocktails as well as sodas, water, coffee and teas. We attended our very first Reno Little Theater play 'Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)' as we continually try to mix-up our December tradition of every other year with the traditional ballet version of the Nutcracker and Reno Philharmonic and throw in a Christmas play or something festive. So when RLT popped up in our radar we were intrigued by the quirky & funny synopsis of starting off with A Christmas Carol and concluding with Santa does exist - LOL! With just the click of a button the RLT website of purchasing tickets was easy, allowing you to see exactly what sections, what seats with the view of the stage - BTW all seats are GREAT! Be sure to not hesitate too long on deciding whether to go to the RLT as there is always the potential that the production and/or date you had in mind will sell out with you missing out on an enjoyable night out, laughing hysterically and enjoying a wonderfully unique play. Continuing - we had a enchanting evening with the delightful cast as they easily submerged us into each Christmas story as we giggled, laughed while the time seemed to dance by. One of my absolute favorite parts as there are many to chose from was during The Legend of the Yule Cat performance the audience handed over gently used scarves, gloves and hats for Step2 Clothing Drive for a local charity specifically for women & children. This was on their website and FB so we made sure to find some items to share - LOVED THIS! Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention their version of The Nutcracker that had me literally teary-eyed with laughter while tapping my toes from the Sugar Plum Fairy song and I'll just share this as to not give anything away: mouse in a leotard, a solider and some ballet moves that were absolutely EPIC - bahahaha!! LOVED, loved every minute of this play!! This is a MUST see before the holiday season is over and highly recommend Reno Little Theater! When I think local theater - I think about supporting the arts and getting what you pay for. At Reno Little Theater - you get so much more! We have seen a couple different plays here: a few when they still had a three-sided theater and a few since they installed new seats and have always been blown away. Parking at this place can be a bit tricky but it's easy to grab a meal nearby and then walk straight to the theater. This place is relatively small so any seat you buy is going to have a great view! My 6' 5" fiancé would argue though, if you're tall, you'll want an aisle seat so you can stretch your legs as they are a bit tight! Concessions are more than reasonable and they are currently featuring a local brewery which is fun! It's intimate and easy to get to the bathroom/concessions and back to your seat. We recently saw the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and it was so fun! Where were you 'While The Lights Were Out'? Hopefully at the Reno Little Theatre, experiencing the theatrical genius of playwright Jack Sharkey brought to life by a must-see cast of actors. Like Halley's Comet or an honest politician, it is rare to witness a 15-character non-musical play. While The Lights Were Out is a two-act, hilarious murder-and-mayhem-whodunit romp akin to comedic gems like The Butler Did It or The Real Inspector Hound. Having a large cast together onstage for most of the show, the director, Libby Bakke, guided them thru an organized chaos with Tony-nomination-worthy acumen. The actors, professionals all, are sensational. Working together as a team, each member of this acting troupe works to bring out the best in each other. Of course, we all have our personal favorites, and I am no exception. My two standouts are Holly Lorge as Lady Monica Wickenham and Darcy Lenardson as Jasmine Perdoo. Why? Go see the show to find out. If you haven't been to any of Reno's live theatre presentations, While The Lights Were Out would prove a most enjoyable first performance. And if you're either an occasional attendee or a season subscriber, you should make it a point to see this show. What a magnificent space! What a magnificent group of actors! What a magnificent evening! I've only been once. But once was enough to make me check out pricing for season tickets. I didn't see an overly compelling reason to get the whole season. The price break wasn't huge and the flexibility of getting the shows that I am most interested in are totally worth paying regular price. We planned a whole evening around the Peter and the Starcatcher production on a Friday night. Our family as a whole has sort of been on a Broadway musical kick, and have been seeing as many shows as we can afford while not sacrificing quality of production. We have headed into San Francisco for this entire last season of HSN. And we've been to New York for a handful of plays as well. All this, just to give you a base for my personal experience. I'm not some theater major that knows the ins and outs of how a production should be put on, but I do consume theater when I can at the best possible price vs. quality. Will we drop $1000 to see Hamilton on Broadway? No. Will we pass on most Broadway tours that come to Reno because we are watching the 4th String tour company? Probably. So with that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this performance of Peter and the Starcatcher. The production was minimal and used the space very creatively. It did seem a bit crowded at times on the stage, but I think that may have been the intent of the production. The actor's performances were what I would expect from one of the best playhouses in Reno. Solid performances with a stumble here or there. Yet there was one actress that blew me away with her stage presence. Hannah Davis could have easily stood on the stage of any theater I have been in. The seating is small and intimate. It's hard to miss the missteps at this close of a range because it's just hard to miss anything. From the sound system and the lighting and the seating in the round, this was a really immersive experience. Sightlines were awesome where we sat, and I am sure are great from everywhere but the angled seating. It looks like those seats may have rare moments that are blocked by other seats. Parking is very small, but street parking is plentiful and there are lots of great restaurants and food choices around the RLT. We made it a whole evening with dinner at The Gaslamp. As I have said many times before, this was very bittersweet. I really am happy to have this wonderful place here in Reno, and my ONLY regret is that I haven't taken the time to go before now. But that won't be a problem in the future.. read more

I had my first visit to Reno Little Theater (RLT) on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019 to see their production of Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park". It was a simply delightful experience! A quality stage production at a very affordable price. I brought my 84-year-old mom to the 2:00pm show. We are both long-time fans of the 1960's movie version of (which starred a *very* young Robert Redford and Jane Fonda), so we knew most lines before the actors said them. The cast did not disappoint. Standouts were Emilie Meyer as Corie Bratter, Aaron Foster as Paul Bratter, and especially Michelle Calhoun, who played Corrie's mom. All were spot-on in their portrayals of the characters we've come to know and love over the years. Our seats were front row center, which put us within arms-reach of all the action. Mom walks with a cane, so floor seats were a requirement for us. (They don't advertise handicap seating, so if mobility is an issue, any of the front row seats are your best bet.) For those without mobility issues, there *really* isn't a bad seat in the house, there are only about 100 seats in the place. Even seats on the sides of the stage are excellent, as the actors cover the space well, so not all action faced the front. Chairs aren't traditional theater seats - they are more like padded banquet chairs on small sets of risers (3 to 5 rows up). Chairs were comfy and had mom's seal-of-approval (she's a tough critic in that regard - lol.) I bought tickets online and was pleased they offered a senior discount for Mom. If you need to call, be patient as it's mostly a volunteer operation. You'll more than likely get their message machine (even during advertised open hours), however, don't be afraid to leave a message. I called and left messages on two separate occasions, and got calls back from friendly, helpful people both times. Customer service is excellent! Originally, I bought tickets for the show on SuperBowl Sunday by mistake. I called and left a message asking if we could switch to another day. I got a callback a few days later and was told they were adding another weekend, and we could switch to those dates for just a $2 change fee (that was $2 total, not $2 per ticket.) Since these new dates hadn't been advertised yet, we had our pick of any seats in the house! The second time I called was at noon on show day. It was the morning after a big snow storm and I wanted to know if the show was still happening, as most of the town was still digging out. Got a callback about an hour before showtime. The caller apologized they didn't call sooner - they were all out shovelling their parking lot - and, yes - the show was still on! We arrived about 20 minutes early which wasn't early enough to secure one of the two handicapped parking spots by the front door, however I was able to drop off mom right at the door, and still found a spot in their main lot (which if memory serves, can hold about a dozen cars.) There is also a parking lot across the street with plenty of spots (a big plus as parking is a challenge in most other mid-town locations.) The small lobby was packed, and they had a concession counter offering wine, beer (I think?), sodas, chips, candy and speciality cocktails with cute names related to the play. I was recently told by someone at UNR that even the actors at RLT are volunteers. If that's the case, they attract amazing talent, as (with few exceptions) this production was first-rate! I highly recommend RLT, and plan to return there often. read more

Attended this Theater after many many years. I had attended regularly when they were in their other location and not sure why I waited so long to come back! Attended their performance of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. Fabulous little theater, with intimate seating in that there is really no bad seat. Love that the seating is reserved! Thank you for that! We were just starting to begin enjoy the show and about 45 mins in, the power went off, emergency lighting came on immediately and the audience was ushered back into the lobby. There they provided complimentary champagne. I doubted the power would be fixed in 15 mins, but it was and we were all ushered back to our seats and the performance began again where they left off. Very professional actors and all were very much engaged in making this a fun show. As I enjoyed the show, I could also see the audience on the other side of the stage and everyone had a smile. Beverages and treats served in the lobby at intermission and such a lovely overall experience. Highly recommend and do get your tickets early as these shows sell out fast. read more

RLT has been around for 80 years (as of 2014), and there are many generations of Renoites that have fond memories of RLT shows through the decades...Though it seems to have already been forgotten, RLT has only had their new building for about 3 years or so. When their original (proscenium) theatre in downtown Reno was demolished in the late 90's, many thought they were done. Hug High was kind enough to offer them a home for many years, and at the beginning of 2012, RLT finally had their fabulous new 99-seat blackbox theatre up and running! Though their black box theatre can be configured a number of ways, they perform most of their shows in 3/4 thrust, which means that the audience partially surrounds the stage. Because RLT has such a history in our community, they also have a strong financial base. The theatre is so beautiful, but I do wish that they'd invest in better seats for their patrons- they certainly have the resources to be able to do so! The seats are just stackable chairs that you'd find in any convention center, and it's difficult to feel comfortable in them. RLT is the most traditional of our local theatre companies and has the widest audience base. The talent here can be mixed, because they work with a broad range of experience levels. If you've ever wanted to try out for a play, RLT is a good place to start. This is also probably the best theatre to visit if you've never been to a play. They produce crowd-pleasing shows with broad appeal- no need to be afraid of weird, alienating, experimental theatre here! They also rent out their venue for special events and offer a free children's show during Artown. The Jester's League, a local improv group, regularly performs here. It is also the new home of Ageless Repertory Theatre (ART), which offers reader's theatre productions of classics read by talented seniors. Last summer, a new company called Rising Tide Productions mounted a production of "Chess", the pop opera created by the duo behind ABBA. You can even host a quincañera here! The RLT staff and volunteers are professional, organized and helpful. I do wish it was a more welcoming environment to socialize in after the show, like the other theatres offer. They have such a beautiful venue, and it's a shame to feel like I need to immediately disperse from the theatre. All in all, RLT is a solid bet, and you will very likely enjoy your time here! read more

Far from the great white way yet they do some interesting productions. Located just off Wells on pueblo street. it's Reno's longest running community theater. Not only do they offer their regular season they teach theatre to kids from kindergarten through high school. La Gente Latino Theater calls RLT home. Plus they do senior reading @ lunch time once a month. They host numerous visiting productions throughout the year. The lobby is set like an art gallery with a reasonably priced bar with moderate offering of beer, wine. Water, soda & snacks. I love that the art is themed to the plot of the plays. So far I've voted for a favorite painting, interacted with the activity wall or made a sugar skull. I really dig the interactive art before the show. The good: Solid performances. Nice array of pieces shown. They do a lot with minimal sets. Not a bad seat in the house. The space can be rented for private events. Very reasonably priced. The not so good: Short runs on the shows. So for me scheduling is at times is an issue. read more

W e have never been to the Reno Little Theatre. Located off wells ave on pueblo, it is a small theatre, but they definitely make due with what they have. Parking is right next to the building, in a private lot. At the entrance of the building is the ticket office. You can either purchase tickets online or at the venue. They sell concessions in the lobby, soda ,water and snacks. The theater itself is fairly small and is considered a black box theatre. You are literally sitting right next to the actors as they perform. There are no elaborate backdrop changes, what you see is what you get. We went and saw the Odd Couple, female version. It was fabulous. The acting was fantastic, and the set was always changing, but with several items always there. We will definitely be back. read more

This is a great little theatre. They have productions year long, from musicals to plays. I have see quite a few shows here and love what they do with the limited space. Reno little theatre is a black box theatre. Not the normal huge stage and props. They have a talented group of actors who are local, who have made a name for themselves at RLT. Some of them start out acting and move on to directing. I recently saw side by side by Sondheim. Fantastic show with wonderful voices. We are so lucky to have a theater like this locally. read more

I absolutely love RLT! This place is so adorable and has been around so very long! I also learned that RLT is the longest running community theater and I can definitely see why! I have seen several plays here and really have loved each of them! The actors and actresses are wonderful entertainers! I appreciate the wide variety of genres they cover! There really is something for everyone! There are so many dedicated volunteers that make this place incredible! I have only ever been to this new location and was introduced through a friend of mine. They really have made it comfortable and aesthetically pleasing! They have a confession stand where you can get beer, wine, tea, water and snacks. I haven't been to many small theater events in Reno. I think this was my second one outside of the University performances. I went with 6 other friends to see Too Much Water Makes the Baby Go Blind. It was 30 plays in 60 minutes. The order of the plays is chosen by the audience by shouting out numbers. The cost of the tickets varies between $11-16 based on the roll of a single die. The base price at the door is $10. Attendees roll the die and pay an additional amount equal to the number rolled. Tickets purchased in advance are $17 and the roll of the die determines the refund amount. I thought this was kind of a fun idea. Since my group had purchased tickets in advance, I rolled the die and received a $5 refund Refreshments were available in the lobby area. If you so choose, you can pay $1 to spin a wheel for free refreshments. Maybe a water or soda, a candy item, beer or wine, even two free tickets to an upcoming performance. I spun and landed on Spinner's Choice which included anything except the performance tickets. $5 beer for $1 was a pretty good deal in my book. All in all, the show was a lot of fun. the venue is very small so there isn't a bad seat anywhere. I'm looking forward to attending more shows here. read more

I had been to a play here a few years ago and enjoyed it but kind of forgot this place is existed until last week when I attended a debate put on by the Reno Debate Society. The venue was perfect for this activity, the sound system was adequate and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house with the layout they have. Speaking of seats - they are cushy. Posted after my first visit to the new space on Pueblo. The space: Exterior of the building is modern and "artsy" looking, which I love, but the signage isn't very visible from the street. I knew which side of the street I needed to be on and still missed the venue as I drove past. It wasn't until I turned around at the end of the block that I could see the sign on the building. The lobby is great! Open and bright, huge windows, more modern angles and colors and furniture, and a nice concession area. I love the combination of tall tables and regular height tables, combined with LOTS of standing room. There's also an upstairs area where I could hear people commenting on how beautiful the space was, although I didn't venture up there myself. All in all, this building has the feel of a legit professional theatre. A huge move up from the days of the Hug High School stage! The bathroom was beautiful. Three private stalls and two sinks. However, there's more area in the little entryway/waiting-in-line area than is probably needed, and not much space between the stalls and sinks, which struck me as a little odd and potentially problematic during a rush at intermission on a sold out show. Tonight, though, there was no discomfort. The stage! It's a black box theatre with a thrust stage (stadium seating on three sides of the stage). The tech booth is above the entrance to the theatre area, so the lights in there are completely out of the line of sight of audience members. I love that the tech is so non-intrusive. The lighting is hung from the ceiling, as you'd expect in a top-quality theatre space. From a technical standpoint, I couldn't see any shortcomings. They seem to have spared no expense or thought in providing a current, professional space. Performances: I've seen a couple of shows here, although only one in the new space. My overall impression of this theatre company is that they have wonderful people working for them, they thoroughly enjoy what they do, and they embrace a wide range of experience levels in casting. This makes it a great place for would-be performers or tech staff to audition, even if they haven't done a show before, or not in a very long time. Great place to see a show.
