I recently met with the children and family services coordinator who told me they take women and children and offer daycare to residents, in order to provide job training for interested women. Both men and women are offered services. On campus is an El rio health clinic so people could get health services. There's food available. There's places to sleep. There's an intake counter for people in need, look for the Welcome center building. The gospel rescue mission is always in need of volunteers to do various things. Spoiler alert, my work with this CT location is positive and I'll give details below, however, I'd like to address one reviewer's comments. The Southern Az CT has very, very little control over what we bidders are willing to pay for items and almost all bidding starts at $1 so if someone felt their family did not receive what they should have, pls understand, as bidders we are looking for a bargain--most auction bidders are--and Unless an item is very unique, scarce or custom--when the bids go higher than we'd like to pay we just stop bidding and go elsewhere. This explains why items sell far below retail--that is the point as far as we buyers are concerned. Now I'd like to tell you that I live in Ohio so anything I've won in these particular auctions must be shipped to me, which I, of course, pay for and consider part of the cost of my finds. I've had many occasions to work with these folks and believe me, like you I would not give my money to a company unless they provided me Stellar and careful customer service. I have returned to their auctions, and will continue to do so because they've photographed each item from multiple angles in proper light, written a detailed description with any known history, and pointed out any known flaws so that I'm always left knowing exactly what I'm looking at on their website. Once I win an item (usually several!), they write to me, attach an itemized invoice and provide me with an estimate of what packing,, shipping and insurance will cost. Let me tell you, these folks are fearless regarding what they will carefully pad, pack and ship to me. My first experience with them was truly surprising as I bid on three pairs of table lamps--with shades. It did not occur to me until I received them how much time and care it took to pack these unwieldy lamps, shades and other items. I knew then that this crew was experienced and had confidence in their knowledge of how to ship such items that did not drain my bank account. Out of six lamps, six shades and numerous other objects, one ceramic lamp's base was a little damaged, however, this was due to a previous repair attempt which they'd informed me of before it was shipped so the choice to take the risk was mine and in this one instance it did not pay off but it's an easy fix so I didn't even bother mentioning it to them or ups as neither were at fault and I like to tinker! Here's the bottom line folks--I can only speak to the obvious care they take with my items and me as a customer but if I lived in the Tucson area and had need for a downsizing or relocation service I would call them quickly and without hesitating because they've proven themselves, on three occasions, to be caring, thorough and forthright--all the best qualities any of us should search for and other companies would do well to emulate. I took a tour and learned a lot! GRM has the ability to house nearly 400 people - men, women, and…read morenow families too. There are carefully monitored guidelines including strict intolerance of drugs/alcohol, violence, and even hate language. Every resident must participate in a program (learning, job training, etc.) as well as in requirements of the house - cleanliness, chores. These all evolve from their mantra: love, grace, dignity, and respect. It is demanded by and from residents and staff. Remarkably, it is intrinsically self-policed, that is, residents will call out misbehavior by a peer before staff ever need to. And, despite their Christian roots, participation (by staff volunteers and the unhoused) is non-proselytizing. We learned that medications are also strictly regulated - no one can have them loose by their bed, etc. All meds are locked and carefully distributed directly to the assigned patient-resident one day at a time. Once a resident has completed job training they become eligible to attend a Pima College certificate program - one that, again, GRM pays for. These ultimately lead a resident to become employment ready. One of the really cool things about GRM is that residents stay until they have BOTH a job and an apartment lined up... and, maybe a bit counter-intuitive, despite all that's provided for free, residents are self-motivated TO graduate. GRM manages to accomplish all of this on a budget of around $12-15M per year. We learned that they regularly receive corporate donations from the likes of Amazon (giant pallet surprises) as well as from area businesses. Another cool thing is that donations from individuals like you/me are never resold. Rather all are distributed in-house, frequently to those graduating to their own place. Moreover, they have a small fleet of trucks (think medium-sized U-Hauls) that will drive to you and pick up any donated furniture or appliances... for free! They will go as far south as Green Valley and as far north as Oro Valley and all in between, east/ west. These items provide "graduates" with the modest items to furnish their new apartment. There were other volunteers in attendance on this Saturday as well and you can register to volunteer most anytime. I have since brought my last two "goodwill" loads to this (local) charity!
