The staff were so nice, were very helpful & went out of their way to help us. The store had a great selection of NP merchandise, as well as authentic items. We bought many items both as souvenirs and gifts. Additionally, the gentleman that worked there suggested we stop at Chiricahua NM on the way back home. Both staff members spent time with us, gave us info & I have to say....it was an amazing suggestion! We couldn't believe how beautiful it was & we would never had known about it if it wasn't for them taking the time to tell us about it. We went today to watch a 70 minute video that a couple made of their travels to the Arctic and it was quite well done! The couple was there to introduce themselves and answer questions at the end, but the movie they made was played on a massive HD TV. NOTE- you have to sign up for these events in advance and they do fill up. You literally have to call and reserve your spot right when they open up. We tried to reserve spots for next weeks "an armchair walking tour of Tucson" and it was already all booked.

After the past few months, I had to come back to update this and hopefully help people avoid this…read moreplace if it's not a necessity. 1) Luckily, the retaliatory false CPS report they filed after I fired the case worker was quickly found to be unsubstantiated and closed. If I did not happen to be someone who keeps extensive records to immediately disprove the report point-by-point, that could have truly been a nightmare and caused substantial additional trauma for my daughter. The experiences with Casa did, unfortunately, make her very wary of mental or behavioral health services. 2) I am amazed and endlessly grateful to see the positive changes that have occurred since she stopped getting "help" from the Casa workers. Her confidence and activity levels have soared, she's so much less fearful and depressed and anxious and confused and isolated all the time. I truly wish I would have trusted my own knowledge and instincts and not let these "professionals" keep making my daughter and I feel like they know more about us and what we should do and feel and think than we do. I guess there's some silver lining out of this nightmare. I am thankful that, if nothing else, it definitely made us closer. It's hard for most teenagers to recognize what their parents do for them and appreciate it and see how much we care about them, but after seeing how awful and manipulative and biased and self-serving the employees were, it was really a wake up call for her. She's so much more appreciative and grateful and motivated for both the present and the future now. So I guess at the end of the day, Casa de los Ninos did help us, but unfortunately, it was through the damage caused by their professional incompetence, agenda-pushing, overreaching, undermining, and boundary-crossing.

What a fantastic place for building stuff!…read more My dad first learned about Xerocraft when he needed to rent a particular type of woodworking machinery, only to learn that he could come in to the shop and use it. They have a massive wood shop full of tools and machines, so whether you're an experienced woodworker who needs to use something special, or if you're new to building stuff, it's a great place to check out. The laser cutter is super cool! You can cut or etch a variety of materials, including wood and acrylic, using your own designs on the computer. They have a ton of 3d printers, so if you need to make a weird little part for something, minis for your D&D game, or anything else, they're happy to show you how to run the equipment and get you going. If you want to be prepared to rebuild after the zombie apocalypse, you can even learn how to weld! I have no idea when I would ever need to know how to do it, but I wanted to learn, so I attended a Thursday night class and got hands-on practice, and now I could build an epic Mad Max battle wagon if I felt like it! There's also WTF nights (womens, trans, femme) where folks get together for all sorts of neat projects. If you join their Facebook group, you can see what events are coming up. If you want to get started, your best bet is to send an email message so you can set up a meeting with a staffer/volunteer who can show you the ropes and get you set up to work safely. The hours can be a bit odd, but all the folks I've worked with have been very helpful, and they'll make sure to take care of you.

I recently met with the children and family services coordinator who told me they take women and children and offer daycare to residents, in order to provide job training for interested women. Both men and women are offered services. On campus is an El rio health clinic so people could get health services. There's food available. There's places to sleep. There's an intake counter for people in need, look for the Welcome center building. The gospel rescue mission is always in need of volunteers to do various things.
