I went with about…read more10 of my coworkers, and we all had different "jobs" to do from helping with check out to running the stamps to cut out shapes for bulletin boards. What Classroom Central does, is provide free school supplies for teachers in underprivileged school districts. They cover about 7 districts from Union to Mecklenburg to even one in SC. They have everything set up for teachers to "shop" the store. They get a certain quantity of each item and can pick up to 25 different items. These items range from book bags, to one subject notebooks, to markers, pens, pencils, and crayons. All the items are donated and Classroom Central doesn't receive money from the state. Risa is in charge of the volunteers who work there, and she is a gem. She's very patient with people like me who ask a lot of obvious questions, and I can tell she appreciates everyone who comes in. If you ever have the chance to volunteer, please do so. They have a sign up online, and normally go in 4 hour shifts. Mine was 1:30-5.

Disappointed and Misled…read more I spent six difficult months hoping this program would help me get back on my feet, only to be let down by empty promises and a lack of genuine support. I was told to trust the process, but after long periods of silence and delays, I was ultimately rejected with a generic email. This program seems more focused on selecting people who are already likely to succeed, just to maintain a high success rate for appearances and funding. It felt strategic, not compassionate. I also felt discriminated against for my faith and discouraged for receiving disability income--even though I made it clear I was ready and willing to work. I was judged instead of supported, and never truly given a fair chance. This experience was disheartening, and I want others to know: this program is not what it claims to be.

However, there are limits on the items priced to move quickly ($1) and there may be limits on other clothing groups. The funds help the organization continue its mission of helping women.

People were scurrying about digging through tables of what resembled trash. Things will likely never be on a hanger. - Yes, you have to wait to get the go ahead before you can start sorting through the bins. If there's a cone on the items, don't touch it! Wait with everyone else until the workers remove the cone. - Yes, other people will be there shopping for themselves and their families or stores of their own. I have never had anyone become physical with me nor have I ever seen a fight that happened at this location. - Yes, there are lots of good things that you can find! Great brands, cool home goods, and clothes for the whole family. There are also underwear in there so I wear gloves. These are items that were left at goodwill retail stores. Sometimes items aren't purchased because they were priced too high or in a store out of season. There are quality, usable and wearable items here! The outlet is the last stop for them.
