Been in line for 20 min - another 20+ minutes to go...
    Kristen P.

So I LOVE a goodwill outlet store. I will happily dig in the bins for hours. My low rating isn't for the store itself it's for the management. If you have been to a Goodwill outlet then you know there are the customers who come first thing in the morning and stay all day. They have their shopping carts that they keep lined up against the wall covered in a blanket so no one can see what they have, which is fine, EXCEPT the store only has about a dozen shopping baskets, so unless you're here right at opening you will not get the use of a cart. (GW management, please please get more shopping carts at this location.) My other issue is no matter how long the line gets, they will never have more than one employee checking people out. I come at least once a week and regularly stand in line for over 40 minutes. There are plenty of employees working, just not at the register. Clearly it's not a priority to keep the line moving quickly out the door. I have been to Goodwill outlet stores in several states and across Texas and this is the only one that I've seen that runs like this.

This place has both, and despite its impressive array of goods from clothes to furniture, it's well organized and easy to navigate. I'm normally a neutral-color dresser but some of the clothes encourage me to step out of my comfort zone into some louder designs. Additionally, the walls are all lined with non-clothing items for sale -- books, movies, glassware, water bottles, and more. I don't think I've ever come a cross a thrift store with this much versatility. Out of the Closet is serious about HIV/AIDS advocacy and they prove it by putting their money where their mouth is. Like many other thrift stores in Montrose, you can expect marked up (but still fair) prices compared to the larger ones with piles upon piles of clothes to sift through. 96% of all proceeds at this store, however, go toward supporting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Free condoms are offered near the cashier counter; free HIV testing and a not-for-profit pharmacy sits in the back. The roots of thrifting inherently lie in supporting the community. This is usually accomplished through the affordability of everyday items, but this shop takes it to the next level by showing their dedication to safe sex and access to healthcare. Give this place a visit the next time you cruise through Westheimer -- they deserve your time more than you know.

Pavement provides a valuable compromise between thrift and retail stores. Everyone loves the idea…read moreof thrifting, but it's often time-consuming and requires a sharp eye to spot the hidden gems. For a markup price, but still no where near what you'd pay at a retail store, Pavement filters a lot of the boring thrift items out. That way, you're more likely to find something you like without having to look too hard. Some of the finds here are quite impressive. I've bought a couple of graphic tees over the years, never paying more than $15 each despite them looking new. One of them has even landed in my rotation about once a week. Pavement's role as a trendy semi-thrift store works well for its location; I often find myself popping in for only 20-30 minutes, either right before or after grabbing a bite with friends, because that's all the time I need to browse the already-curated merchandise. In short, this is a great place to upgrade your wardrobe without breaking the bank or combing through hundreds of pieces at a time. The chances of walking out with something in hand is still hit or miss, similarly to any conventional thrift store, but I like my odds way better when I walk in here.

I submitted the form for a collection to the art department. The confirmation of submission email I received indicated it might take up to a week to get a response, so after a couple of weeks I sent a follow up email. I never got a response to my submission or to my follow-up attempt. I then forwarded the email to the main email address for The Guild, and again, nothing. I waited a while and then reached out again to follow up. No response. I also attempted to reach someone by phone. This process was really exasperating, and I eventually gave up and took my items somewhere else. At the very minimum, their confirmation email should've indicated it might take weeks or months to receive a response, if that was the issue. If they did not want the items, all it would've taken would have been a one-line email to let me know. I followed all the instructions on the website. I couldn't bring the items in because the website indicated you could only bring one or two items in on the designated art day, and that if it were more, that you had to submit that form to the art department. It is bizarre to me that I would receive no response to my submissions through these official channels. I also sent a follow up email indicating how unhappy I was with my experience, and I received no response to that either. My advice is to take your items somewhere else for consignment. It is not worth the trouble to do it at The Guild. It was a complete waste of time for me.
