I don't think I've ever come a cross a thrift store with this much versatility. Out of the Closet is serious about HIV/AIDS advocacy and they prove it by putting their money where their mouth is. Like many other thrift stores in Montrose, you can expect marked up (but still fair) prices compared to the larger ones with piles upon piles of clothes to sift through. 96% of all proceeds at this store, however, go toward supporting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Free condoms are offered near the cashier counter; free HIV testing and a not-for-profit pharmacy sits in the back. The roots of thrifting inherently lie in supporting the community. This is usually accomplished through the affordability of everyday items, but this shop takes it to the next level by showing their dedication to safe sex and access to healthcare. Give this place a visit the next time you cruise through Westheimer -- they deserve your time more than you know.

I assume that the Heights location is simply keeping the items donated from people living in the 1-2 million homes that have destroyed the Heights. I did score a bright yellow new J.Crew sundress my last visit that for some reason wasn't in the designer section & a yellow Loft sleeveless shift. I don't remember what I paid, but probably $12-$15. which was high for the Blalock location. Perhaps they were simply hung in the wrong area by a new employee. On one visit I scored a pair of like new OluKai Hawaiian sandals for $3. The cashier immediately knew that they shouldn't have been $3., but she gave them to me at that price. When I looked them up they were $90 or higher.

I came here today to drop off my junk. I know they are other people's treasures. It has the cleanest and coolest air conditioning inside. All prices are standard for brand name and off-brand clothes. But the racks are mixed with everything from one entire family. While I was browsing through men's trousers, I found a bra and a size 16 pants. Wow. Not appetizing to me. I literally flipped through the entire rack for a pair of size 36 jeans. No luck. Oh well. I know they have challenges finding employees. It's ok. Just another large Goodwill Store in Houston.
