This is the largest Salvation Army store and donation center within the Philly proper, and since its within three blocks of my girlfriend's house, I randomly find myself within here a lot so I can boost my thrifty pants style. Since its within the Roxborough/Manayunk area you do tend to find a lot of good products at bargain prices. I've scored everything from vintage Calvin Klein jeans and collegiate pajamas to American Eagle sweaters and Star Wars merch all between $3-12. With the frequency that they get and restock inventory, it definitely gives you good reason to visit regularly, and you run into a ton of colorful regulars who do just that.

My friend picked up an Elvis doll and my other friend picked up a vintage Barbie doll. So many cool finds. You really need to look around as they have newer stuff and old vintage finds. Because in the world of thrifting, this place harkens to the old style - jumble of items, packed, run by volunteers for the benefit of a charity. You know, treasure hunts. I love treasure hunts. I'm on my way to downtown Lansdowne one morning and I see a simple wooden A-frame sign: "Re-Purpose Shop". Oooh. Interesting name. Will it be like a Habitat store? Something else? I turn on the side street, then into the parking lot of the church it's housed in. Hm.. No more signs. Well, that door looks logical, so I go in...to an empty hall and kitchen area...but wait, beyond that, some light. Ah! They have two rooms, and have partitioned so one is clothes and the other is 'everything else'. The shelves are packed and there's stuff along the floor too. Roughly categorized, it was so much fun rooting through and finding some cool stuff. The volunteers are very cool, one has a small dog who greeted me with a welcoming sniff, wearing his little doggy Eagles sweater. Aw. Then I was not interesting and he went back to whatever he was doing. This is not a place run by professional organizations under the mask of 'thrift'. It's not neat and super shiny. It's a mad wonderful jumble, and for a treasure hunter it's an absolutely great place to be. They're only open a couple of days a week. I had cash, I don't remember if they take plastic. Benefits the church's programs which include their food pantry.

[618] Driving down…read moreLansdowne Ave I see a sign in front of the Lansdowne First Presbyterian Church that says "Thrift Store" so who am I to pass it up? :) There is plenty of street parking where you can enter thru the front (middle of church) or park in back which you can enter thru the red door (thru hall then store). The small church basement thrift store expanded to another room for good reason. Tons of donations. The second room is stuff with tons of great bargains at a discounted price. The main room is filled with books, kitchen items, house items and a kids corner which is filled with toys and board games. The great prices along with the staff being super friendly is why this rating is a 4. Everytime I stop in I always find a great deal on something. Today it was a $1 under armour sweatshirt and $2 set of 8 pyrex bowls. I always stop in to see what new stuff has arrived and I'm never disappointed. Not many hours but that doesn't stop people. The place was packed. I'll definitely be back and if you're in the area you gotta check out the friendly staff and great prices.

Yelp limits a user's categorization of a shop like this one to "thrift stores" but this is less a thrift shop than a high end consignment and gift business with remarkably affordable prices. Yes, you read that correctly: Owner Joanne Rebold is very intentional about her inventory and very price conscious. She understands that moving stock is more important than storing it. That's rare these days, isn't it? The premises are remarkably clean, beautifully well organized and appointed and appropriately lighted. At the front of 2 Friends you'll find an excellent selection of women's, men's and children's clothing, and arranged for convenient browsing. What you won't find at 2 Friends are ripped stitches, tears or moth holes in anything Joanne sells because she's meticulous about condition. To the left of the entrance stands a lovely (and often asked about) china cabinet full of crystal, dishware and fine porcelain. Among today's takeaways were a Beleek china bud vase for twelve (!) dollars, typically priced at $65.00 to $75.00 elsewhere (check Rubylane if you don't believe me). Now, take a deep breath, backtrack and read that sentence again. This sort of shopping find is rarer than hens' teeth on the ground these days. Dig a little more deeply into the china cabinet and you'll find full sets of designer dishware (Pfaltzgraff stoneware, Royal Worcester tea sets), cut crystal (today's visit turned up sparkling Waterford and Wexford sets) and Royal Danish holiday pieces all elegantly presented and priced to sell. Keep walking through this immaculate store and you'll pass designer handbags, vintage women's hats from the twenties and thirties (I counted no fewer than a half dozen cloches, smartly displayed), jewelry, brass, flatware, toys and on and on. You never know what you'll find so stop by often. Joanne's stock changes daily and her consignment traffic is high. What sets 2 Friends apart from so many other neighborhood consignment shops is that Joanne offers high tea for groups in an ever-evolving, ever improving back room. The 2 Friends "tearoom" is already booked weeks in advance for reading groups, local women's organizations and product demonstrations so be sure to make your reservations early because her calendar is filling up quickly. Parking is a little bit of a challenge because meters line the lot out front. However, there's ample free parking a hundred yards past the store on Woodland so keep heading west until you find a spot. 2 Friends is tucked into a row of stores flanking the Drexel Hill Post Office and set in the business district of historic downtown Aronimink. If you're planning a consignment junket to the Main Line remember to add 2 Friends to your itinerary. You won't be disappointed. This is a local treasure owned and operated by one of Upper Darby's leading lights. Brava...

I will preface this review by saying I am a difficult convert to thrift stores for clothing…read more(excepting rare vtg fashion), and even moreso when it comes to clothing or gear for my baby. But I admire people who can make use of thrifting for clothes, especially if they are saving money over what they'd pay elsewhere (I love saving money)!!! I bought all of our baby gear + 0-6m clothes new b/c I was paranoid of germs. That said, once 6m hit, my son went into a growth spurt that lasted 2 months, and grew him into 2T clothes! That was when I decided second hand was not such a bad thing. (I could not even get things through the wash before he grew out of them.) Until today, I'd never shopped at a kids' thrift store, I bought items a la carte on ebay (REI, LLBean, Carter's PJ's, etc). So I ended up at As They Grow in Berwyn b/c I called ahead about a second hand convertible tricycle/stroller. They had a Kettler model for $50 ($170 new). There are a ton of these ride-ons on the market, and my son is only 9mos, so I had been eyeing a version made for younger babies. The As They Grow proprietress (she didn't give her name) encouraged me to visit and take a look, in case it might work. Great. When we got to the store, the Kettler trike was right out front. There was more wear to it than I was expecting for $50 at a thrift shop. (Percent off retail is great for sales on new items, but it doesn't apply to the world of used. Garage sale prices apply.) Still, we took a look, discussed it as optimistically as we could, but it just did not seem safe for our son. The proprietress then came out to join us, and she agreed, he is too young. I decided to take a look inside since we made the trip. If you like high-end Nordy names for kids clothes (Mini Boden, Tea Collection, etc.) and filler with more middling preppy standards (Baby Gap, Polo, etc.) this is the place. Girls on the right, boys on the left. Clothes on racks, shoes lined along the wall on the floor. Tons of fancy preppy clothing in loud ginghams, rugby stripes, florals, etc. Bold bright prints, that will make cute photos, but are so noticeable, that your kid can't really wear them more than once or twice, b/c the statement is so memorable. I did not spend hours picking through everything, but I easily got a feel for the vibe, which was Derby race attire. Lilly and V. Vines galore! And don't take me for a knocker of these styles; I have plenty of V. Vines, and Lilly dresses (I sold half on ebay and still have a dozen of 'em), but I can't wear that stuff all the time. My son is crawling, and wants to get dirty, and I want to allow that growth to happen for him. I need practical, durable clothes for him, in dark or earthy colors (like the REI and LLBean mentioned above). I didn't see those labels here. They could exist in other seasons, or perhaps as consignments come in, but again, the vibe, was Devon Horse Show, not walk in the park. So for me, it was a wasted trip. I'd call these "vacation clothes," or "dress up clothes," or "family photo clothes," but not "everyday clothes." I attend storytime at Radnor Library every week, and none of the other babies wear these kinds of clothes on the daily either. Just providing my input for other shoppers, who will have varying needs. As They Grow was running a 50% off sale on all tags of certain colors (orange and green this time), so they work to move inventory by consignment age. However, the prices for used clothing were high. I saw some cute Janie & Jack boys' loafers, but the price was $20 used (and used looking)! I searched these on ebay and they're $8 there, in better condition (plus shipping, but that is a wash with my gas and time to lug a baby to the store). A no name brand was $7 for boys' pull-on print shorts. I can get these items brand new on sale for the same price (and this year's latest inventory). I can get them on ebay for half the price with shipping. I also have to say, when I visited in my "uniform" of yoga pants and VS tee, I was looked up and down. (I wear this outfit everywhere else I make Yelp reviews, and I never before noted that I've been looked up and down, except Devon WF.) I felt like I should have been dressed to the nines to visit a thrift store. Excuse me. I don't think the woman meant anything by it, and it is probably just her nature, but in a retail setting, toward a customer, it's not appropriate. I've shopped plenty of thrift stores for vintage furniture and home goods. I have donated tons to local thrift stores, as well. People at Bryn Mawr Hosp Thrift are super gracious and sweet, on the shopper end as well as the donor end. That is the kind of attitude that welcomes me back. It's a shame that I did not have a better experience at this place because I was on the fence about trying a local kid/baby thrift store, and this visit sent me right back to ebay, where I just bought my brand new Joovy Tricycoo for only $15 more than the used Kettler.
