I had a closet that needed to be purged desperately and Saint's Place has a community in need of gently used women's clothes. When my friend told me that they'll use my old clothes right away, I was sold. It was a match made in philanthropic heaven, so to speak. Saint's Place is located in Pittsford, adjacent to the St. Louis Church. Their goal is to aid and assist newly arrived refugees by giving them clothes, housewares, tutorial services, and by setting them up in new apartments. Lots of families rely on Saint's Place to get set up upon arriving in Rochester. What I really liked the most is that the refugees pick out clothes and leave with them that same day. Here's how it works: you can just leave your donations on the back porch and grab a receipt if you itemize. Make sure you keep everything together in a plastic bag to protect from the elements! For those of you who love a good garage sale, Saint's Place has an annual super sale. This is noteworthy because it's the one time of the year when they accept donations of non-children's books. Saint's Place normally only takes children's books because the refugees are only now learning to speak English. Clothing donations should be of the casual variety, maybe a little business casual to be thrown in. Pickup is available as well if you can't drop off your donations easily. Of course, volunteering is also good too! I'm glad my friend told me about Saint's Place because I know my old clothes will be put to good use here. I have also seen used items from Walmart, a store 500 feet away, marked at over their retail value from this Goodwill in Macedon. 5 years ago this was my favorite Goodwill to visit, now I only go their to laugh at their ridiculous pricing. If this price increases resulted in a higher percentage of monetary flow to their work programs I would understand and support this. However their 1/8 of profit has not changed and the increase in price is only to boost the income of the higher ups. A concept that charitable organizations are supposed to be in stark contrast of. I believe that this up-charging of price is made even worse as Goodwill Macedon is not located in a wealthy area and those searching for clothing are limited to either brands that are known to be cheap and unreliable, or paying 3x the base amount for something that they can find brand new at Eastview Mall for $5 more. Over the years I have donated hundreds of dollars by rounding up my change at the end of a purchase, but currently I can not see myself doing that as I am already paying up to 10x the amount I would have been paying 2 years ago, and I have no longer any desire to donate this money to Goodwill Macedon. I have began to take my money and donations to other organizations such as Salvation Army as I know that my money is actually being used for rehabilitation and it hurts myself as a consumer less. They have a wide selection of books in various genres and age ranges. All of the books that I looked at were in very good condition. They have some newer and more popular titles as well.
