Dropped off donations early on a Saturday Morning and decided to check out the inside too. I was pleasantly surprised with just how clean and well stocked it was. I like that they have "grab bags" at the front with small items (bundles of greeting cards, sewing supplies, kids toys), this is a great way to reduce waste and put donations to good use! Hearing the staff interact with the customers and each other is part of what inspired me to leave a review. I heard one staff member run to the back to compliment another on how they organized a section of the store. The advertised times/ hours of operation are incorrect. I lugged an entire large bag of items to donate on public transportation all the way to this location and was turned around at the door and not allowed to donate my items. What's shown online and what the in store personnel adhere to are completely different. It's heartbreaking because I'm essentially forced to throw perfectly good items away since a company that promotes good will and charitable efforts are refusing mine. read more

This appears to be one of their newer locations. As an avid Thrifter, I have not been impressed with the Goodwill locations in the Maryland and DC area. Second Avenue thrift is definitely better. However, this location is decently stocked, well organized, standard Goodwill prices. One of the benefits of this store that you don't find in all of them, dressing room! I was surprised to see it. The downsides: Parking. Very hard to find a spot. read more

This is a great newer Goodwill to shop at! The store is very spacious, with a lot of isle space. The volume of inventory they have on the floor is vast, and I find that each time I go there has been a good amount of clothes that has been cycled through. The sections are clearly organized and have a lot of variety. The items themselves are more on the newer side so its great for people who are trying to build out a wardrobe for work. Changing rooms are spacious and open (not a lot of thrift stores do that post pandemic). Staff were super friendly and accommodating. read more

Great new, smaller job. There's a decent men's section, and a nice selection of home goods (in particular kitchen items). I've dropped off donations multiple times at the new location and although it can be congested, it's helpful that the staff come right to your car to make it quicker. Parking is my largest grievance compared to the last location. read more

I've been needing to find a good thrift store in the area to fill that void I have in my life. I have been to many in the area with hopes that I would find a location that would afford me some pretty good finds. With high hopes I decided to come here. This place is crazy busy. Mostly with people coming here to drop off donations. This somehow causes a backup of traffic in the parking lot because so many people are dropping off items. Once you can make your way through the parking lot and find a parking spot, you are finally free to go inside and roam about the building. Once inside you are hit with that familiar Goodwill smell. After your eyes adjusts to the lighting you finally get a good look at this space. First thing I noticed was that it was smaller than I expected. The next thing I noticed was how much of a mess this place was. Like you walked into a kid's room after they said they cleaned it. I went about my way, attempting to browse, but wasn't having much luck. Every turn I took I was blocked by several people just standing there and not browsing. I left the clothing section in hopes of browsing the housewares and having better luck. Granted, you're only going to have luck here if the selection on the shelves are good. Needless to say, I wasn't having much luck. I went through the housewares section with hopes of finding a toaster. I know, I could go buy a new one, but if I could find a gently used toaster that needed minimal cleaning, I'd feel quite lucky. No dice. Every one that I came across had rust inside of it. How? I'm not sure. I continued to browse and look over items that I didn't necessarily need, but looked interesting to me. After a few more minutes of this I gave into defeat and realized I wasn't going to find much here. With that, I am still on the hunt to find a great thrift store in the area. read more

Was told that if I were to leave my donations (which were neatly packed in bags and boxes) next to their building before 10am, "that's called littering". LOL. Are you going to call the police on me for "littering" my neatly packed donations next to your donation facility? Do you want my stuff or not?????? There was not even an appreciative "thank you" for bringing in the donations. Was just scolded for trying to drop my crap off 20 minutes early. The signage to enter and where to donate is very clear. Just don't miss the right turn into the lot, otherwise you'll be on Route 50 and can't easily make a U-turn back. I first donated a ton of clothes, and the donation clerk was friendly and immediately assisted me. I then went inside. Not a whole lot of merchandise or cool finds, and a lot of it is disorganized so it's a bit of a pain to sift through all the mess of things. I bought several gender-bending sunglasses and two mint condition books, all for less than $20 total! Yellow, pink, and brown sunglasses and "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer and an easy desserts cookbook! The cashier was friendly and offered to round up my purchase for charity. How could I say no to helping fund educational programs for a few pennies? read more

This review is for the drop-off donation only. They have it down to a science! Big boxes for you to self-sort your items, or you can ask for assistance with bigger items. Today I donated a large glass cabinet, so I asked for assistance and a kind young gentleman came to my car with a flat cart and got it out of my vehicle by himself in beast mode! Just great customer service all around. Beware the long donation lines right now (lots of people cleaning out their spaces during COVID), so I recommend going earlier in the time window that they accept donations. read more

This is a happy place, I guess it's because of the spirit of charity, because every time I come here to browse for some old music they are warm and welcoming. They ask to make sure the cd I'm buying is in the case and some congratulate me on a good choice. I really haven't looked at the clothes much but that seems to be the main draw here. You can also find some good picture frames or mirrors usually. This last time in the electronics section I found a good stereo receiver and five disk CD player and five cds for fifty dollars! I had picked up some abandoned speakers for free earlier so now I have a garage sound system fire when I detail the car and a week to return anything that doesn't work. There was a record player with an old style phonograph that I spotted but I don't have any records so I left it. Looks like it was $24 and it needs a needle if you're interested. read more

Great Goodwill overall. I'm a huge thrifting guy - I don't like to wear ANYTHING that's not bought from a thrift store or eBay - just like a car, as soon as your sweaty body rolls out of Neiman Marcus in that $3000 Isaia suit, or out of J.Crew with a $90 pair of Chinos, the value drops precipitously. Why pay new prices? And speaking of name brands, I've been to thrift stores ACROSS the entire Southeast and beyond - from Buckhead, GA to Annapolis, Maryland, from Tampa, Florida to Buffalo, New York and then some (how about the thrill of thrifting in Ottawa? Yeah I've done it...it's awesome): DC thrifters are very lucky that the kindly limousine liberals of DC donate some VERY good brands and VERY high quality clothes. The difference between a Goodwill in Thomasville, GA and our South Dakota Ave store is night and day. To be fair, the majority of Goodwills of Greater Washington (especially in NoVa) are equally great. In short, the selection is great, and REGULAR prices here are far better than those at the Salvation Army on Kenilworth (BUT they do a half-price day that is unbeatable for the area) - most items will run you between $5-$8 dollars. For men, blazers are $8.99 and suits are (a little high) at $15.99. Bless Goodwill of Greater Washington for sizing their clothes - they are color-coded - Orange for small, Red for medium, and so forth. This store has a great selection of clothing and a particular "color tab" each day is discounted to half-price - probably the oldest color tab in the store, a great way to clear out the less popular items. The furniture selection here is tiny and not great usually. Lots of chairs. The book section is a mess, not organized at all, and kinda measly too. The housewares section sometimes has some good items, and there's usually a huge selection of luggage. They also have a reasonable amount of random sports stuff and appliances at fair prices. The location is out of the way for many Washingtonians, but it's also right next to Costco and a straight shot down New York Avenue to US 50E and near Bladensburg Road. It's a real pain to try to make a left turn coming off the highway, so, coming from DC, I try to come up the back way and then it's easy to pop over to Costco to join the melee for a $1.50 hotdog meal. For shopping, this is my favorite Goodwill. The prices are usually fair and unlike Salvation Army, they have standard pricing (except for a small selection of designer items in the "boutique" section) for most items. In addition, the clothes are organized by size and type...all adult clothing items have size tags which are attached with plastic, not the horrible extra thick double staples that Salvation Army uses that leave your clothes looking like they were attacked by a pack of vampires...I appreciate that. The size tags are color-coded as well as placed in separate areas so you don't have to waste a bunch of time looking through random sizes. They also have maternity and plus size sections. There are three large, fairly clean fitting rooms and there is a changing table in the bathroom (there's only one) which I really appreciate. I always find something really cool here...a NASA onesie, baby suspenders, lion costume, new condition Jordans are a few of the items I saw on my last visit. This is the only thrift store where I routinely purchase items for myself because it is so well-organized that I don't have to waste hours looking to find a few unflattering garments. The Tuesday regulars are usually cool and love the babies! Unfortunately, they are my competition for deals on this 25% off clothing day (accessories not included), so it's not all good but I enjoy overhearing stories about growing up in DC in the 40s...like my grandmother who grew up in super-segregated DC in the 1920-30s - it reminds me of her. As thrift stores go, this is my #1 all-round pick. read more

Stopped in to donate items and the staff is very friendly in the drop off area and will help you remove bigger/heavier items from your vehicle. I've stopped by a few times and you will need to ask for a receipt they typically don't offer it to you. Great experience - happy to donate here again and again! read more

There are only a couple of workers at the donation center who are actually friendly and polite. I can't tell you the number of times that I have come to donate goods and gotten yelled at for something or just because the person was crabby. The only person who's actually polite is one of the good will services recipients. Receiving area is very small, and frequently there a goodwill truck parked in it making it even smaller and harder to navigate. Today I got yelled at for parking spot while trying to donate when it was blocked. Then the helpful employee or volunteer dropped some of my donations on the ground right in front of me, broke them, and made no motion to do anything about it. I will be looking for someplace else to make donations in the future. read more

You gotta love a goodwill thrift haul on a Monday afternoon. Just left the goodwill with five pairs of pants, IN MY SIZE. I'm a 8-10 kinda gal, and sometimes it's a struggle finding thrifted pants that actually fit AND makes your butt look fabulous. For me, a successful business is about how you make customers feel when they encounter you and today Regina should not have been that person. While waiting in the line to drop-off she came out the gate hollering at people(customers) commanding them to get out of their vehicles and bring their donations. Her turned up face and body language spoke before she did. People were walking up saying good morning and she said nothing in return. Rashad, the donations drop off employee, asked her about the two kids beds I wanted to donate and she said they would take them(he confirmed this as I was headed out). After dropping the first bed and asking politely where she'd like the second one she stated she didnt know what I was talking about. When I explained I'm the one Rashad just had the convo with you about she again said he only asked about one bed. I told her not sure what your issue is but I have nothing to do with you having a bad day. She then said she didn't want the bed. I said no worries. I asked for her name and if she's the manager which she stated she was. I've lived in the neighborhood for 8 years and frequent this Goodwill for drop offs and shopping. First time I've ever experienced this kind of service from an employee. I have a feeling I won't be the only person calling corporate about today's experience. She should be retrained on customer service because today she failed at it. The three stars are for Rashad. He went above and beyond to make sure traffic was flowing and everyone in lined was spoken to and guided. read more

Although they do price items for the home a little too high, there are still some great deals. I've been thrifting at this location for a year and have found some great items for my home. I like this place. The folks taking donations make it super easy. And the store itself is big enough to not feel cramped and jammed all the time. For donations, drive your car around back, pop the trunk, and the employees will help you load up a bin with all your donations and give you a receipt if you want. The employees inside the store itself are just as helpful. Like all Goodwill shops, you have to search to find something you want, but I've never walked out of this place without buying something. At the beginning of summer, I got a pair of knee-high brown boots for just $2. In the middle of winter, I got a great summer dress for only $4.50. It pays to shop off season. Also, it looks like the local boutique Current donates their items that don't sell with the tags still on them - shoes, suits, dresses, tops - all of them are great items, and they are much cheaper at Goodwill than they are at Current. read more

Shopping in this store was an absolute pleasure. There is ample parking outside. It is clean and spacious. It is well-lit. The items for sale are logically organized, and clothing is separated by size. I could browse the clothing racks much more efficiently than at many thrift stores, because I could go right to the section that had my size and not waste time. The clothing is very affordable, and each category of item has the same price. Long coats, $14.99, T-shirts $2.99, and so on. I found an Ann Taylor Loft wool skirt perfect for fall, for $5.99. The furniture section is well-stocked with attractive furniture in good condition. I was particularly pleased because I've been on the hunt for the perfect folding chair. I found it here at Goodwill, a wooden-framed chair from a reputable furniture manufacturer, for $6.99. In fact, they had two of the chairs, so I bought both of them. They were in great condition except for a few light surface scratches here and there. These chairs retail for $33 a piece new, so I was very happy with my find! The book selection is nice and has a good mix of history, cookbooks, biographies, etc. Not just fiction trade paperbacks, although those are there, too. 99c for paperbacks, $1.49 for hardbacks. There were plenty of staff on the floor, and they were friendly and happy to help. I observed a customer ask a staff-member if an electronic item had been tested. Without skipping a beat, he offered to test it in front of her eyes so she could be absolutely certain it was functional, explaining that he wanted to make sure she'd be happy with her purchase when she took it home. The woman who rang up my order at the front register was similarly professional and cordial. This was all-around, a really well-run Goodwill and also a well-run thrift store by any standard. read more

This is one of my favorites in the area. I drop off donations there about 6 times a year; geesh. The guys are ALWAYS friendly and are at my car before I can even get out. Now onto the inside.... when I say I can rack up on some good deals. I recently purchased J. Crew, Calvin Kline, Ann Taylor and Bennetton slacks(all recent season) as I am constant shopper so I know what's in. I've also purchased skirts, blouses and a cutsie Banana Republic dress. Additionally, I love African American history and have found quite a few books as well. Lastly, cooking is one of my passions an I can always find GREAT cookbooks there. I feel good about donating quality items to Goodwill. Though, I often feel bad about it on my way home. This is because the facility at 2020 S Dakota Ave employees the rudest young people in DC. This group is anything but customer-centric. They remind me of rude workers at fast food chains who really don't try to provide even C- grade service. Goodwill should consider getting professionals to volunteer a few hours on the weekend to assist with taking in donations (e.g., Big 4 firms, Consultancies, law firms). The current weekend staff should never be seen by customers. read more

This store is cleaner and more organized than any I've visited and I was able to find a few well priced classic items of clothing --Brooks Brothers red plaid flannel work shirt @$5.99 (oh so soft), and a white Aqua blouse with lace sleeves @$2.99 (a brand typical sold at Bloomingdales). The items are cleaner and better priced than any Goodwill I've visited and has kind of a "high end" feel. I will be back..! read more

I was looking for a place to donate a giant bag of clothes and box of stuff I no longer have space for. I found this Goodwill online and saw it had great reviews when it came to making donations. Well the reviews were right! I drove here on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm. A little awkward to get to, but once they have clear signage telling your where to go. And although the parking lot was full and 3 workers were all helping unload one van FULL of donations, when I asked a worker where I could put my things he came over to my car and unloaded them right away. He also asked if I wanted a donation receipt. Super quick and really helpful! The store itself looked big and clean, but I knew if I went in I would come home with more things I don't quite have room for yet. I will definitely be back with more donations! read more
