Looking at the other reviews, it seems like they either do very well or very poor. In my case, it was very poor. I was trying to get an existing awning fixed for a client of mine. First they need to come see it and I told Katie, I needed a new remote because the owner died and there was no remote. She wrote an estimate for 2 guys for 1.5 hrs @ $310/hr And a new remote. They decided the motor didn't work so they ordered a new one, but did not leave the remote. Then when they came back, they brought the new motor but no REMOTE! But did remove the old motor and took it and the new one with them, since they didn't have a REMOTE! When I called Katie, she called me a liar, said I never ordered a remote, even though I can prove it was on the invoice. Then Jeff called to say I hurt her feelings...it's great that he stands by his employees, but not when they are dead wrong, and I can prove it! I will follow up and let you know how this saga ends, but this company did not impress me. read more

In Nov. 2024, I contacted the company to install a patio cover for my rental. I come from the Central Valley, where this company was founded. I chose not to get bids. The home was completed in 2015 and we were tired of the heat. Jeff and sub contractor Taryn were on the project. What a difference the insulated cover makes. My general contractor Christian Construction, who did all the renovations on the home, came back after the job was done, and made recommendations. I felt two general contractors were better than one. I often do this with my projects. Taryn returned and corrected the issues. It was very easy to contact Jeff, who is related to the founder. It also helps to have two civil engineers in the family! Installed the Bella model awnings on our back patio in December and am realizing the benefits now that the weather is heating up. The interior of our house is substantially cooler. After the extensive 110 degree days during the 2020 summer we had awnings installed after dining on the patio at the Iron Horse in Folsom one hot fall day. We asked where they got there solar shade and it was GC. The awnings make a big difference and with climate change it adds additional value to our home. It's been a few months now and I have solved the problem with our shade that had fallen completely off its roller to the ground. Careful readers will recall my warning to stay away from Goodwin-Cole or at least to engage with them only knowingly and at your own risk. And so, I hear you ask, what happened - did we engage with Goodwin-Cole's proposed more than $2,000 charge to put one window shade back on the roller from whence it never should have fallen off? Did we engage with Goodwin-Cole's proposal to replace the 8 ordinary D-cell alkaline batteries (~$8 at Costco) for $100? In two words, NO and NO. After checking around, we hired a SF competitor whose service men happily came to our place and showed us how straightforward it truly is to put the shade back on the roller. It took them ~30 minutes and they installed our D-cell batteries in the problem shade and another shade in the same room - no extra charge. The overall charge for the service call? I do not want to say publicly how very reasonable the competitor's charge was out of respect to their possibly confidential pricing model...but I will say it was a TINY FRACTION of Goodwin-Cole's mega-proposal and we saw it as very fair. Still I must ask myself, what the heck is Goodwin-Cole gaining by being so very stand-offish and offering basically nothing in the way of ordinary customer support? I wish I knew the answer to that question. Instead, I will repeat my admonition to 'engage with Goodwin-Cole 'at your own risk'. In my humble opinion, Goodwin-Cole is neither honest nor are they operating in good faith as a vendor. Act as you see fit. read more

Based on the driving I saw today, Sept 8, I would not patronize this business. The guy was driving a truck (license plate ending in 1H2) near Folsom Blvd and Howe Ave. First, he drives in the bike lane to get around traffic stopped at the traffic light at Bicentennial, so he can be first! Then, he makes three lane changes within 3/4 of a mile without using his turn signal. He does not represent the company well. When you're driving a company truck you have the ability to make a good (or bad) impression. You have the company name on your truck to advertise - that can also hurt your business if you drive poorly. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! I've done business with Goodwin Cole for over 50+ years, from skis and boots to awnings. My front Awnings's needed replacement, since Goodwin Cole has always done a great job, I naturally called them......the awnings had to be re-done 5 times, no quality control! Each time they agreed they weren't right! The 4th re-do, they took the awning back the Friday before Memorial weekend. The manager, Scott, guaranteed re-installation the next week. I reminded him it was a holiday weekend and he repeated his guarantee . I called after 3 weeks, because I'd heard nothing, and I was treated like the most demanding person ever. I was told how busy they were and they were placing bigger jobs before mine. Right after that call I received a call from Jearlyn, in their accounting department, demanding payment in full on my over-due account...WHAT? she got an earful! She promised to call me the next Wednesday, but again heard nothing. Scott the manager is a total flake, has never been in this type of business before, over promises and under delivers at every turn. Make sure there's a different manager if you call there! By the second month I started requesting all communications in writing, at the suggestion of my attorney, since so much double talk was continually happening . read more

I scheduled an appointment to get an estimate for the replacement of existing fencing and two gates. They were quick to send Ponce to complete the estimate that was promised seven days after the consult. It did not arrive as promised so I nudged them for it every week for five weeks. When it did arrive from Chris, it did not include drawings, details of costs or materials; just a contract for signature with a hefty price tag. I asked for a breakdown of costs by fencing and gates as well as drawings. The drawings arrived, but did not reflect my conversations with Ponce. When I expressed this concern, I was told to pursue another vendor and recommendations were provided. I guess they did not want my business. I am still interested in getting quality service if Goodwin-Cole is able to provide it. read more

They came out looked at all my windows told me how great of a company they were and that I'd get my estimate for work in two days and that was a month ago! What a waste of time. This Company has been around for a long time. When I was a kid 1960's), my parents had bought a tent from Goodwin - Cole , tent was a huge piece of tough canvas and poles, the canvas had eyelets that had metal rings inside of the canvas so the canvas did not tear, 30 plus years. I was looking for some estimates on iron/steel gate to put up in my backyard to my little patio area and the side (dog run) of my house to block off my pool. I drove out to Goodwin-Cole and made an appt for a tech to come out to take pics and measurement of the areas that i needed the gates to be installed. Brain came out on the appt day. He took some pics and measurements. Told me that it is peak season for them and that it should take about 7 days to get a quote back. Well, it's been 3 weeks and nothing. No email as promised, no text, nor phone call. What a waste of time for me. I would not recommend this business to anyone. I can only image what it would be like to do business with a company that fakes out on thier clients and/or potential clients. I have used Goodwin- Cole for both my home & business. My house faces east- west and in the Afternoon the Sun has always kept the air running in the summer. Brian & Roger suggested a Retractable Awing that runs across the slider glass door and windows. I was AMAZED at how much it cut out the heat and in turn has resulted in the A/C running a lot less in the summer. It is a perfect patio cover also and the fact that it is adjustable make it even better. They have also down the awing on the outside of my business. Both over my experiences with them have been great, they are truly experts at what they do and it is not all about the sale. They have provided me with Great service and workmanship. We remodeled our home after 22 years and I loved the look without the blinds up. Obviously the Sun was going to be an issue in the back with southeast facing windows. We got several quotes for awnings and decided, for a couple reasons, to go with Goodwin-Cole. When they first installed them, I had an issue with the underside appearance. They never blinked, they just said they wanted us to be happy and they would make it right. They removed the frame and all, rebuilt it with a different canvas attachment, and they just left after installing the beautiful awnings over our back windows and French door. I have finished my second major project with Goodwin-Cole (since the first was so successful). I highly recommend them. They fabricated two custom and very unusual awnings for me and both are working out very well. Special recognition should to go Robin. While exact measurements and the overall plan were my responsibility, Robin made it a point to understand my goals so well that she was able to suggest further modifications for improvement that I had not thought about. She didn't just take my plans as is and say "okay, we'll call you when it's ready". She spent time and expertise giving it some thought. Robin was also super helpful and insightful on selection of colors (they have a crazy amount of colors available and I was a little lost). The craftsmanship and materials are outstanding and I have proved them more than once in adverse conditions of use. My only advice is to plan ahead. The custom jobs take some time and you can't be in too much of a hurry. They are very busy and often booked a few weeks out. But I like that. When I have a tough problem to solve, my rule is that I want to talk to the person who's busy. From a restaurant to a mechanic, the people who are busy are the people who know how to do it right. After having several visits to the show room. And then having Goodwin-Cole come out to measure a shade structure that was already built. Shade structure was approx 16x20 feet in square footage. The estimate to provide shade sail cloth at 95% sun block was $ 4500. Which I believe to be very high. When asked to give a break down of labor and material the company refused and said that I had to give a 50% deposit NON Refundable in order to get the breakdown on cost and material !! I told them that I believed that good business would be to give me the labor cost and the material cost. They refused to divulge that information which made me suspicious of the cost. I refuse to do business with a company that appears to be dishonest or hiding cost. I believe that a company has the right to make a good profit but that should be up to the customer if they want to pay for the service. To me it seemed they were hiding something. So I have taken my business elsewhere. read more
