Walking trails inside the park that connect to The Line Creek Trail that connects to most major trails in the northland, access to Line Creek itself that runs next to the park, a skatepark for the cool kids, a playground for the younger kids, gazebos and benches for family gatherings and a lot of history and signage for us nerds. The site is very important from an archeological standpoint of indigenous settlements going back 7000 years. Lots of excavation has been done here over the past century+ and the location is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Thanks to the Argosy casino money, Riverside is able to keep the place is great condition with continuing additions and improvements, and the location is next door to the new library. A perfect combination to entertain the kiddos for a day.

The climbing structure is for older kids, I would say ages 5+ and then there are some swings, and some other play features for smaller kids a few feet away. I love how most of these parks have something for everyone whether a toddler, tween, or adult it's hard to say you're bored when you're surrounded by the beauty of nature and the architectural builds. The trees are huge and form a natural canopy over the playground and splash pad area. Currently reminiscing about how beautiful this park is and might have to take a stroll through it this weekend because there are so many great parks in the area it's easy to frequent those you live nearby. Thompson park is in the heart of Overland Park that I don't want to describe as a "hidden gem", because iykyk; but if not come find out what the hype is all about!

Like many parks, this one benefits from its location in the neighborhood, and is easy to walk to for thousands of homes nearby. It is, in my opinion, not a destination park like Loose Park or Westwood Park are for many. The playground up at the top of the hill has been redone and it's pretty nice; sandbox, slides, a spinner, and pretty traditional things to do for the kids. There's nothing to climb if you have an adventurous kiddo, but plenty of other fun things. In the winter, this is *the* sledding hill for the area, and although it's been many years, I have good memories of this one. This summer season, Wild Way Coffee is setting up on Sunday mornings right by this park which is nice, and it's good to have some green space for the dogs and kids to run.

Often times, a park is a park. But this park, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King,…read moreJr., stands for so much more. There is green space and walking trails, tennis courts and a playground, shelters and areas to explore. But there are also consistent reminders of the thoughts and legacy left to us all by the late Dr. King. The playground is a recently renovated space done in partnership with the '15 & the Mahomies' Foundation, the community-focused group backed by the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes. Safe, new equipment with a soft surface makes for all kinds of playtime fun for the littles. Getting outside, with cooperative weather, has always been a wonderful way to spend family time and this playground offers exactly the kind of fun atmosphere in which to enjoy that time. The area is lined to the south with paved walking paths and sidewalks, plenty of space and very accessible. You are just a mile or so from the Plaza, the UMKC campus, and more. This is a green space tucked in a beautiful area with lots of historical and cultural significance. We should all be so fortunate to not only use the space but remember of the legacy of the man who inspired its name.
