The kicker was that, in cleaning out the car (whcih they didn't even bother to do, either) I found a hand-written note that said "car dies when warm" followed by several question marks. The car is the same now as when they bought it so not like there was money put into it to justify the price tag. I wrote an email to them mentioning my research and did receive a reply but no mention of working with me on price. It shows pending now so hoping the potential buyer does their own research or sees this post.
