Let me preface this by saying that given others' experience, my terrible experience with Wheelock's…read moreseems to be an outlier. Still, it seems wrong not to share what happened. TLDR: I trusted Wheelock's to check a car before I bought it, bought it with their word that it was all good, and now will have to spend more than $1000 to fix obvious problems they missed. On April 12th I test drove a friend's car because I was thinking of buying it. I liked it, but noticed the AC was not working and the check engine light was on. She dropped the car off at Wheelock's to get checked out before I got it, and I had a budget in mind such that if the fixes cost more than that, I wouldn't take the car. We both called them and made sure to list what we wanted to get checked out (she mentioned a couple issues she knew the car had, and I mentioned the stuff you always want to have checked out before buying a car such as the suspension and clutch, plus the AC which was not working). I eventually got a price (~$2000) and told them to go ahead. I then picked up the car on April 23rd, with them telling me it was 100% and all good. Later that day I noticed the AC was still not working and the check engine light was still on. I had some important trips to do in the next few weeks though, so had to drive it like that. This was red flag 1: how can a decent auto shop say the car is 100% without figuring out and fixing the issue with a check engine light? It's literally a light on the panel. I later checked the error code for that and got that I needed to replace a part. So that's $120 off my pocket. Then I tried replacing the AC freon, since that's usually why the AC doesn't cool, and it didn't work. I'm calling them they said - I kid you not - that "the AC was blowing cool air so we thought it was working but it was a cold day". This was the extent to which they had checked a specific part that both the owner and I had mentioned to not be working. This was red flag 2, and a huge one. I was hoping they'd understand this issue and give me a discount with the actual AC fix, so I decided to take the car there for these last few fixes, as opposed to finding a better prepared auto shop. This was my first car in the US, though, and I was unaware that I need to make an appointment with the auto shop before taking a car. So I just took it, and they said it might take a while because I didn't have an appointment. That part is fine, 100% understand. What I don't understand is why they told me on 4 separate occasions that they'd call back with a price "later that day"/"right away", if they clearly weren't ready. Just tell me you'll need a couple more days. This was really frustrating and when I complained they told me to pick up the car and forget it, they would not fix my car. So I wasted a week. It was my fault for giving them the second chance, though - now I know that the issue with my AC is the compressor, so that's $700-900 off my pocket. If they had checked it properly as *two people* explicitly asked them to when they had the car in April, I'd never have bought it. Now I need to materialize $1000+ out of nowhere because of their disrespect for my money. Again, I hope this is an outlier. But I'd recommend you think twice before going here. Any shop that does not check a check engine light and considers checking whether the AC is blowing cold air (ignoring two people's word that it isn't) as properly checking an AC does not seem trustworthy. I'll be down $3000 by the end of this, and who knows which other issues they did not properly check. Very disappointed. Hope they get better in the future.

There are twentieth century car dealers, twenty-first century car dealers, and then there is Wilson…read moreToyota. At Wilson Toyota, there's Brad Baker. What am I trying to say? Okay, the buyer wants a car at a fair price and the dealer wants to make a fair profit; these goals are mostly consistent so it should be possible for everyone to come out a winner. Right? Only sometimes. The problem with the twentieth century dealers, and there are plenty of them still in business, is that they want you to pay as much as possible; that makes you want to get them back by getting the car at a price that gives them the absolute minimum profit. But the dealers are professionals and they will almost always make a deal that's good for them regardless if it's good for you. This creates an adversarial relationship and you can hardly feel that you may have been had by the salesperson after the deal is done. I always hated buying a car when these dealers were the only choice. The twenty-first century dealer understands that the final deal needs to be good for everybody because they want us to feel good enough to see them again in the future. Big improvement. This is how Wilson Toyota does business and more often than not, they set the bar pretty high for their competition. Brad Baker of Wilson Toyota is among the best of the best automobile salespersons. He listens very effectively to what your needs are and takes time to get to know you so he can help you clarify those needs. He clearly explains all your options and what the different models can do. Maybe more importantly, he makes certain that you understand what a particular car cannot do. I've worked with Brad twice now and noticed that his approach allows him to improve his ability to help you every time you visit. My deal is I'm an older guy and I have some problems twisting and turning to see what's happening all around me. I compensate by trying to be extra careful all the time and I back into parking spaces and garages as visibility of my surroundings is better even though it takes a little longer to get the job done. When I purchased a 2018 RAV4, I was so impressed with the safety features that I also purchased a 125,000-mile extended warranty. Past experiences were that the lowest cost of car ownership meant keeping a good one until it was pretty worn out; however, the safety technology of 2018 may have been good at the time, but the current safety technology is significantly better. Brad Baker helped me select the safest 2020 RAV4 options, arranged for a fair trade in, and even showed me how to get a refund on the unused portion of my extended warranty. Our professional relationship was never adversarial; indeed, I'd say we have become friends. Ten years ago, I'd expected buying a new car to be more stress than fun. Brad Baker and Wilson Toyota completely changed my expectations. I recommend doing business with these folks with no reservations whatsoever!

Summary at the end…read more Went to Ron's to drop my truck off for an alignment and to take the strut spacers off. Ron's told my husband they would have to charge for an inspection (don't remember getting a price), the alignment was going to be about $100, and we didn't get a price on taking the strut spacers off. We get a call later in the day saying the alignment is done and it's as aligned as it's going to get and it's going to be $170 for the alignment and that they didn't take the spacers off because it was going to be $1000 to remove the spacers. To better assist customers, they should have called us before doing the alignment if they knew or even had a hunch they wouldn't be taking the spacers off. We were told they were going to charge us 170$ plus $140 for inspection. On top of that, we have to get a new alignment after getting our spacers off since you're supposed to take spacers off first. In hindsight, we should have read yelp reviews instead of Google reviews because there were reviews of people with similar experiences. So we took my truck to Trickles and they quoted us about 600 for the strut spacers and the new alignment. We went back to Ron's and told them our situation hoping they would be understanding and they said they'll only charge us for the inspection so they charged us $147. We were also informed at the checkout process that they weren't familiar with spacers/lift kits on ford trucks, which is fine, but I just wish we would have known that before dropping our keys off with them. I'm just very disappointed in the lack of communication because we didn't need the work they did if they weren't going to take the strut spacers off. I wish we were told before they proceeded with the repairs. Summary: They should have called us after the inspection and told us the combined cost of the strut spacer removal AND the alignment. Instead they did just the alignment even though we'll have to get another one after strut spacers are removed. I give it three stars because I appreciate not having to pay for the alignment but I did not have a good time, definitely didn't want to pay $147 just to have to take my truck somewhere else. The alignment and inspection is reasonably priced if you're not getting it for no reason.
