Gorditas San Roque - A little hard to find but well worth it!

I was looking for something to tide me over until Enchiladas Doña Lupe opens for dinner, and this…read morewas both highly rated and close--and far cheaper (and faster) than other highly rated options. It was a little hard to find--Yelp's location marker was off, and it wasn't in Plaza San Fernando like it seemed (I edited it, so hopefully they approve the edit). Google had it a block over but had it marked as permanently closed. I took a chance and went over a block and voila! The same lady that's in one of the photos on Yelp! I ordered one gordita and one tlacoyo (it's in their name, so it must be good). Good heavens. How rich and satisfying and flavorful! The red sauce was to die for! I'm sitting across from it and debating ordering more, but I am attempting (in vain) to exercise moderation, and the enchilada place opens in a couple hours, so I'll probably hold off. But I don't want to! Well worth the trouble to find. If Yelp's location marker isn't fixed, it's across the street from the northeast corner of Templo de San Roque (the street might be called Roque, but I'm not sure). Edit: I got two more. How could I not??

A nice stroll in the alleys you get to this small stand next to Estación Gelato ( review another…read moreday). Great little stand. They set up around 9:30 am and run pretty much all day. Two ladies. You have the option of gorditas or tlacoyos. A Gordita is like a slightly thicker tortilla that is opened up a bit like a pita bread. A tlacoyo is like a tortilla gone wrong after you take it out of the tortilla press. Again opened up and filled with cheese first and then a filling. They have a variety of fillings that you choose. We had picadillo, deshembrada and papa. All delicious and filling. You line up ( usually full) and then order how many gorditas and how many tlacoyos. They then press hem and cook them and when they come to yours they then ask you what you want in them. Recommend the food tasty, filling and just right for a warming winter day. My discovery in Guanajuato, is the initial cold reception that always warms to a friendly chat with the locals ( if you speak Spanish). A bit like talking to parisians. Proud cold at first but then warm to you. Enjoy. Sorry no pictures. I was enjoying my food too much!

You get an option of 2 main dishes to choose from and typically most people go for the Enchiladas Mineras. You can get the Enchiladas with or without chicken. Unless you are a vegetarian, go for the chicken. The chicken is so soft and flavorful and the enchiladas have the perfect seasoning. The cheese, carrots, potatoes all are such simple but powerful additions to the dish that you cannot help but almost lick your empty plate within minutes. The pickled jalapeños and carrots that are served on each table are so delicious and the jalapeños have such a nice kick to complement this dish. I also ordered the hibiscus juice, which honestly has such a large serving and is a must here! The place does get crowded at around 7pm with a line, especially since there are not that many seats. After almost an hour wait (trust me it is worth it), I was seated. If you come alone or with just one person, chances are, you will be sitting with strangers and making friends as you eat.
