I understand why Dr Sakamoto has such mixed reviews, because he is truly a case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I have been seeing him for some time now, and at my last visit, I got the Mr Hyde version, and it was truly awful. I was there for a critical follow up visit and had many concerns, all of which Dr Sakamoto dismissed. It wasn't just that he dismissed my concerns, it was the manner in which he dismissed them - he was extremely curt and cold. Given that he never followed up with me after my initial hospitalization and then ended back in the hospital with a much more severe condition later, I would have thought that he would take my concerns more seriously. That day, he clearly did not care to alleviate my concerns or that I left distressed. read more

The negative comments about Dr. Sakamoto just disgust me. For the person that said you lost your job, well you seem to have had the same surgery as me and I was off pain meds within 5 day and walking more than I should have. Dr. Sakamoto did not make you lose your job. In CA they can hold your job for a period of time. This surgeon saved me husbands life as he removed a brain tumor, I will never ever forget how he made sure my husband was taken care of in ICU and stayed with me until he knew everyone was comfortable and we are talking after 8pm. I got to know the most kindest, compassionate and caring surgeon. Please don't listen to the negative comments, please use your own judgment. He is a surgeon, he wants to help. He is not there to be your friend. He is very direct and some people don't like that, if you don't want to listen to what he has to say, he is not the dr for you. Also, he is not a pain mgmt dr. Isn't it his job to get you off meds with surgery? Don't blame him for not giving you more pain meds, you yourself said you were on them before Dr Sakamoto. Stop blaming him for your issues. We know him well and we think he is the best! He is my hero and saved my husbands life and he helped me with my back. Give him a chance, he is so nice and tells you like it is. I would go to him for any issue I had with the brain or spine. If you need hugs and want a warm fuzzy feeling, your not going to get it from this brilliant surgeon. Genuinely one of the worst doctor visits I've been to in the last 20 years. Took my husband here today after being referred to him via an ER visit the previous day. Lower back pain, shooting pain down the left leg, etc. To say this doctor is dismissive is an understatement. Complete lack of empathy and openness to any questions. It almost felt like we were annoying him by being there. I cannot imagine letting him anywhere near me or my husband with an operating knife. Patients, please take these negative reviews in mind while assessing your options. Dr. Sakamoto he perform my surgery L5,S1, at my follow-up appointments I always told him that it hurt a lot and something was not right. He checked my ct scans and always affirmed that everything was fine and that the pain would disappear over time. I lost my job because I could not return, I had to move from the city and get another surgeon and at the first ct scan he realized that Dr. Sakamoto had left many disk fragments that because they were there so long they damaged my asiatic nerve in my leg. I had to have a second surgery to clean everything that Dr. Sakamoto left me in the surgery that he did. as a result of his mistake I lost the sensation of my leg and have foot drop . I still kept all the pieces of disc that were removed in the second surgery. read more

This is so long overdue! I had horrible back pain, like the kind where you can't sleep or sit or stand or do anything for very long. I was miserable and I found Dr Sakamoto and he quickly identified that I would need surgery to truly fix my back pain. The day after surgery I woke up and felt AMAZING. Like right away you guys! I've since had two full term pregnancies with no problems and overall quality of life is just so much better. Chronic back pain is no joke and a good surgeon like Dr Sakamoto is the best thing ever. I get it. He's a surgeon. Surgeons are not typically known for their bedside manner. The best I can describe him is brusque and impatient. He clearly gives the air that he does not want to see you, perhaps because I am not a surgical case. In and out in 7 minutes with no advice on how to manage the back injury except to say it takes time and that he doesn't prescribe drugs (which I did not ask for). I read his on-line reviews after I saw him since I was so shocked by his demeanor. There were quite a few that spoke to the same behavior. This is not a one-off event. This speaks to a pattern of behavior and inability to accept feedback. He may be a good surgeon, but he is a terrible doctor. Having a good bedside manner and being a technically good surgeon are not mutually exclusive. Do better. You are here to care for people. Focus on the caring part when a scalpel is not involved. read more

I was most unhappy with my initial and follow-up visit with this MD. He is almost robotic in his patient interaction and doesn't make small talk. He did not show a smile during my two visits. Also, he was unfamiliar with a spine technology that a previous surgeon had used on me, which was disconcerting. After my visit, I sent an email asking for a copy of the visit notes for my records, which seems like a simple enough request. Other MD's have provided this w/o kickback. But his office, thought his medical assistant, who appears to act as the MD's email surrogate, refused to provide this summary and instead pushed me off to another department called Medical Records down in Mountain View, where I would have to make a formal request to receive a copy of my own personal records! I then had some back and forth with the Medical Assistant on this issue over email. This resulted in my receiving a personal telephone call from the MD on Friday evening, Jan 4, 2019, where he apologized and promised a written copy of my office record within the next week. The week passed and the MD and his office failed to deliver the promised report, forcing me to email again to remind him of his promise. The following day after sending this latest email, I received a VM from PAMF Patient Relations instructing me to file the Medial Records request. So annoyingly, we were back to square one. So much for this MD's personal promise. Additionally, ALL interactions with his medical assistant in the office and again, apparently acting as the MD's primary email surrogate, were also negative. On the basis of the above, I cannot recommend this MD or the Burlingame PAMF Neurology department in general. read more

I'm 8 days out of surgery so I may return to update if anything changes, but I felt compelled to leave a review. I'm making it a long one because it deserves to be, but for anyone bored by elaboration: 4 years with a herniated L4-L5, got surgery with Dr. Sakamoto, was off pain pills day 4, back in the office day 7, taking it VERY easy (day 8 now) but essentially asymptomatic and walking around comfortably and it feels GREAT. The story, for those who like a novelist in their Yelp research: After a car accident 4 years ago I had back pain that was quite well managed by chiropractic and exercise, to the point of competing in and winning martial arts tournaments in the 12 months following the accident. As time wore on however, the core issue worsened. Over the past 2 years or so I've had a variety of symptoms piling on, some that have come and go, but the situation was trending downward. Sciatica, and a year later tingling and numbness in the left leg, then the bottom of the foot, then the whole foot. First it was sometimes, then it was regularly. For a period, if I stood up from laying down, I'd get a searing pain where I had to crouch for several seconds til it passed. I hadn't been back on the mats for martial arts in nearly 3 years. Again, this is absolutely no brain tumor, but certainly quite a quality of life detriment for an active 20-something who couldn't remember what it was like to stand for 5 minutes in line at a restaurant without his left leg feeling like it was dropped in a tub of Icy-Hot. An MRI confirmed L4-L5 herniation of pretty considerable size (in Dr. Sakamoto's words, "not the biggest I've seen, but pretty big") and my primary care doc directed me to Dr. Sakamoto, who very clearly and concisely explained the situation and the options. Don't expect him to pat your head and give you a lollipop on the way out like it's a return visit to your childhood pediatrician; this dude is a SURGEON. For the record, this is a total non-issue for me. I could not possibly care less for having a sugar-sweet surgeon... I want an excellent and specialized one with a track record of success to free me from 24/7 discomfort and make me well enough (in due time, of course) to revisit the martial arts room. Dr. Sakamoto's honesty struck me as impressive. He told me I could try PT, but I've tried it before. He told me I could take cortisone shots, but I declined this quickly as I know it isn't a permanent solution. And of course, a microdiscectomy. He also noted some "off the insurance path" choices like chiropractic and acupuncture. I'm a proponent of chiropractic but had tried a dozen in the last 4 years with minimal success. I asked what he'd do if it were himself. He candidly told me surgery should be a last resort and that I should try physical therapy for 4-6 weeks and if it stays the same or gets worse, then at least I exhausted my options before going under the knife. A 4-week stint with a physical therapist later (whom I liked, but found provided me exactly 0 relief from symptoms) and I was back in for a consultation. Dr. Sakamoto again gives me the cut-and-dry scoop, asks if I have any questions, and goes over the operation and its risks and scheduled a date. There's not much to say about the operation itself. The patient has the easy part. You get wheeled into the OR, pumped with a chemical cocktail and wake up fixed. In my case: no complications, a textbook excellent surgery through about a 1.5 inch incision that 100% of the time elicits a reaction to the tune of, "oh, that's teeny." An hour after surgery I was on my feet (bambi legs, but hey) with NO tingling in my foot. Pre-op this symptom was about a 50%-of-the-time-any-time-I-stood-upright shot so this was a promising start. I still can't test it too much, but sitting, laying down, standing, and walking on it for the past week, the symptoms have been 95% gone and regarding the surgery recovery itself I'd say I've gotten 30% better every day. When I say 95% gone by the way, I mean zero tingling, zero shooting pain. If I'm in a position where my left leg gets some slight stretch, you can tell there is still some healing for the nerve to do, but it's easy to accept that as the nature of being 8 days removed from getting sliced open to relieve 4+ years of pressure on the nerve and spinal cord. I have a follow-up with Dr. Sakamoto in a few weeks and will maybe pop an edit or two in here at the 6-week and 6-month points, but sitting at my desk 8 days removed with a DEAD QUIET left leg and a minorly sore and swollen lower back, I'm optimistic that this excellent surgeon has freed me from my literal and figurative 4-year pain-in-the-ass with no complications and for that, he earns my highest recommendation. read more

This is 13 months overdue, as I am 13 months post fusion surgery at L4L5. I am truly and grateful every morning I wake up. I get out of bed, stand and brush my teeth -- and I have NO pain. Usually by the teeth brush, my leg was on fire. Like many reviewews, Dr. S is my quality of life savior. Dr. Sakamoto was recommended to me by my physical medicine doctor, who was trying to help me cope with extreme sciatica (zero disk between L4/L5 and full nerve compression brought on in part by pars fractures). I had attempted conservative management (PT on and off for years, acupuncture, cupping, injections -- zero help --) for a long time. Dr. Sakamoto was described as a neurosurgeon who was only going to do surgery as a last resort. I was also recommended two ortho surgeons, who were likely to be more "surgery-inclined." I thought this was going to be surgical, but I liked the idea of coming up with a solution with someone who didn't start with an answer. When I met with Dr. Sakamoto, we walked through my options. And, it was really time: he really wanted me to wait for the surgery until the pain was unmanageable. It was really unmanageable and I had a crazy pain tolerance. I had grinned and then grimaced and beared it for a long time without the awareness of anyone but my husband and eventually my boss and kids. Dr. S really got who I was - a super active person/working mom being crushed by this thing. Our conversations were pretty dialed in and I loved that. I found the physical medicine doctors to be so vague. I was super honest about what my life was like, what I was hoping for, and he was super honest about what possible outcomes were (including that if I returned to running after surgery, it may mean a future surgery in 10+ years). We made a plan and a few months later, I had an ALIF/PLIF. Before the surgery he ran another round of x-rays. I was impressed by the circle of other surgeons he reviewed cases with and how they shared ideas. One of the new images showed the inflexibility of my spine and that's when he really settled on the way the surgery would be done. He told me all of this - and maybe for some people they would be freaked out that he wasn't a computer who just was going to do this surgery one way. I saw him as analytical, cautious and perfectionist driven. He was looking for all the data he could get to go in with the best possible outcomes. When I woke up after, 9 hours of surgery, I knew it had worked. The searing pain in my leg was gone. They had me up and walking in an hour. And I was walking my neighborhood within a week. Surgery recovery was relatively easy. The abdominal sutures were the only discomfort. I was cycling within 6 weeks and returned to running (slowly) at 6 months, gradually increasing running with cycling as my base. Now I'm running regularly (and pretty fast! hey!), I have zero pain (immensely helpful for the pandemic year and working and momming) and feel like a 41 year old, not a 65 year old. Dr. Sakamoto is beyond excellent. My confidence in him made me feel really sure about the whole process. read more

In early 2020 I started to notice this pain running up and down my left leg. I dismissed it initially but it just got stronger and stronger, till I was screaming (often silently) in agony, hobbling and not able to walk or drive without that constant pain. It felt like I was being tortured 24/7. By some miracle and after many doctor visits I got an appointment with Dr.Sakamoto. He took one look at my MRI and said I had a Synovial cyst that could be removed via surgery. It was a fluid filled cyst growing between my vertebrae, pushing on my nerves and causing all that pain. He also told me there were non-surgical options which I tried first at a pain management clinic in Foster City where they tried to puncture the cyst from outside with a big needle. That was a complete disaster as it left me more immobilized, in greater pain, and the cyst refilled with fluid and became even bigger. So I decided that surgery was the only option. Dr. Sakamoto performed the surgery in September 2020, and excised the cyst. My first thought as I came out of anesthesia was "the pain is gone". A week later I had resumed normal activity, 8 weeks later was in Hawaii where in a moment of reckless joy I jumped off a rock and into the ocean. As I landed in the water and felt the impact to my spine I was fearful, but then treading water I realized I felt...absolutely nothing. Three years later I'm living a normal life in a whole body. There are some residual effects like numbness in my left foot, but feels like a minor thing that I don't notice often. Dr.Sakamoto is an exceptional surgeon, and very, very good at what he does. His communication was very clear, I felt nothing but kindness and empathy from him, and through this whole harrowing journey I felt that he deeply cared about me and the outcome of the surgery. I had absolute faith that he would do a great job and he did. I am so very grateful that destiny led me to his practice, and would reccomend him highly as a great human being and a highly skilled nuerosurgeon. read more

When we started he was able to explain the medical conditions that the mri found and explained my many options. He explained I was not in need of any surgical intervention at this time. Dr. Sakamoto took his time in covering all areas of concern and showed he understood my issues. He and his staff were extremely professional and caring in all contacts. Dr. Sakamoto was not only an amazing neurosurgeon, but also a compassionate man who always took the time to listen to my concerns, ailments, and (at times) neuroses. I am moving away from the San Francisco Bay Area, and I must admit that one of my biggest reasons for wanting to stay was knowing that I had this doctor in my corner. It is hard to find good doctors, let alone surgeons with bedside manner, and Dr. Sakamoto is both. I suffer from a chronic illness that will likely cause me to meet paths with neurosurgeons throughout my life, and I will be hard pressed to find one as good as this guy. He always took the time to fit me into his office when I needed a shunt adjustment. He got to know my fiancé and always asked how we were doing and updates on the wedding planning. He is a perfectionist, and that is what you want in a surgeon. When the x-rays did not come out to his liking, he escorted me to the x-Ray lab himself to make sure they came out right. He personally called me after I had been discharged from my surgery to see how I was doing. He even seemed to feel bad for cutting off my curly locks. I was up and taking out the trash 24 hours after my surgery with him. Miracle-worker doesn't even begin to describe his talent! I feel really lucky to have been under the care of Dr. Sakamoto. While I would hope to never have to refer any of my friends to a neurosurgeon, if the occasion did arise, I would hands-down send anyone his way! Thank you again, Dr. Sakamoto! read more

this man is a bastard! gets you pumped on oxy and when his sugery makes you worse. he cuts you off. has the nerve to quit you as a patient in a paid appt tht is not even pvt as a family member drove me. he told me to go to yhe the er and tell them what wirks for pain. thats what i do. they call him. he tells them he never told me to do such a thing. he ended getting me 5150'd. at least they gave me my pain meds. im still suing. due to an accident tht put me in icu for 2 mos with a tbi and in coma. it pushed everything way back. he has a malpractice suit coming tht will snake his insurance costs skyrocket. very matter of fact. he wont ever smile. it would crack his face! read more

My mother was admitted to Mills Peninsula with a C1 C2 fracture. This is, from what I've discovered, is a deadly, or at best a paralyzing scenario. She seemed to have dodged that bullet. With luck. This doctor was absolutely unavailable to discuss her outcome. Not only did he not attend to her...he was unable to speak to what procedures, medications, or what she had experienced in his care. He was asking a heavily medicated and injured woman what her chart could have told him, in a grossly condescending and dismissive way. It was other-worldly. David Lynch could have directed it. This guy is a weird automaton. He came in to a patient's room, 36 hours after a life threatening injury, and released her, with no instructions or care provisions. I'm talking gross negligence. I get it, surgeons are mechanics, not doctors, they don't see a whole person. This surgeon didn't see even a fraction of this person, or her care, or the fact that releasing her in this condition could have meant death or total paralysis. We were, are, lucky so far. This guy could have changed our world, for the best, if he had taken that opportunity. To give us a safe way home, and a way to look for the best explanation of how to care for this injury. He could have done it for the better, but he doesn't seem capable of that. Thanks to all the care givers who cover for this kind of negligence....his nurses and fellow doctors, who collectively seem to get it that they need to pick up the slack for his incompetence in this aspect of patient care. Dr. Sakamoto performed microdiskectomy on me 2 days ago and I already feel so much better. I had a herniated disk that caused severe sciatica on my right leg and I endured intense pain for 2 months until surgery day. I couldn't walk or sit at all. My life was turned upside down. Dr Sakamoto explained the procedure very thoroughly to me and my husband. He does this at least a dozen times a month and said its relatively easy compared to other surgery he does. He never tried to push surgery on me but gave his honest opinion that my condition was considered "moderate to severe". I didn't want to waste more time with other options. I tried chiro, acupuncture, herbal patches but not yet PT. But i couldn't drive anymore and didnt want to suffer any longer. For those looking for a Neurosurgeon, please do yourself a favor and go see Dr. Gordon Sakamoto!! That man saved my husbands life last year. My husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor and of course our lives turned upside down. My husband was referred to Dr. Sakamoto immediately following his MRI that determined his brain tumor. When we arrived at his office he reviewed the scans with us immediately and said that this tumor needs to be removed as it was cutting off the brain fluid that runs rapidly through your brain. Dr. Sakamoto explained in detail what he was going to do to remove the tumor and explained that it was a dangerous surgery and was very frank with us that he may not make it. He always asked how I was doing and I wasn't even the patient. He scheduled the surgery a few weeks later because he wanted some surgeons from Stanford to assist him. Well, fast forward one week and my husband was not feeling well and I called Dr. Sakamoto immediately and he took my call and moved around the schedule to see my husband that day. He wanted to put my husband in the hospital until his surgery to watch him but my husband refused and Dr. Sakamoto told me that he would see me probably in the ER. He was so right, that night Dave was having alot of pain and I took him to the ER at 2am. They did the MRI and it showed a blockage. Dr. Sakamoto showed up in the ER and said surgery could not wait. He arranged everything, the operating room, he watched as they did the MRI mapping, sat with us in his room and made sure we were clear what was going on. Dr. Sakamoto in my eyes is my hero! He is an exceptional Dr. and he is the most caring, compasionate Dr. I know. That man is a genious! I could go on and on about him. If you have any brain, spine or nerve problems, please go to the best and that is Dr. Sakamoto!!!! Dr. Sakamoto if you are reading this, words can not describe the man you are. After a long time putting up with leg pain, which I thought, was Sciatica, my physician ordered an MRI. The MRI exposed the real problem, which was Spinal Stenosis on the L3-L4 & L4-L5 area. My physician advised me to talk to a Neurosurgeon because Spinal Stenosis can be fixed. I searched for a Neurosurgeon and found Dr. Gordon T. Sakamoto. On my first appointment I took my wife, Dr. Sakamoto explained carefully several alternatives to us and I chose surgery. About a week after surgery I was off pain pills and walking around with no pain. I'm now in week six and have been given the okay to go back to normal lifting, bending, and twisting, I'm at 100%. However, I was at almost 100% from week three to six, I just needed to be careful to not overdo activity. I sincerely thank Dr. Sakamoto for getting my quality of life back, I can walk without pain, and I'm feeling GREAT!! I gave him permission to pass my name on if someone needs a reference. read more

I'm giving Dr. Sakamoto five stars for NOT doing surgery. I was referred to Dr. Sakamoto by San Mateo Spine Center, which starts as a good recommendation. I came into his office with a very ugly MRI of a herniated disc. Due to some badly impaired nerve function, he recommended surgery. (a second opinion agreed). However, on the day of surgery, Dr. Sakamoto came in to talk to me, and we found improvement in a bunch of my symptoms. Right there inside the hospital, Dr. Sakamoto suggested cancelling the surgery, in effect saying that my disc was just barely too healthy to operate on. This doctor, of his own volition, walked away from thousands of dollars of my insurance money, because my symptoms got a bit better, so my risk-to-reward ratio had gotten a bit worse. That's a sign of honesty that I would trust over and over again. He hasn't operated on me, but he is smart, well-spoken, kind, and most impressively, very honest. If I re-injure this thing, I'll go running back to his office with no reservations. I would recommend Dr. Sakamoto to anyone. read more

I'm writing this reviews based off of first impressions. First off, 5 points for punctuality. Our appointment was at 4:20, which means you'd better be punctual, or better yet....early. We were shown into the exam room, where the nurse immediately took vitals and a short explanation. Time 4:23...next? the nurse practioner came in, did a quick exam and some questions. Time? 4:25... Cue to Dr. Sakamoto, who came in and in a very cursory and cut and dry way explained the scoop? Any questions? We have a few, which we (I as the caregiver) felt that we were wasting his time. My husband was very numb by the news he was given and probably did not ask his question in a clear manner. Dr. Sakamoto looked at him and said he didn't understand the "essence" of the question. Not a blue collar Doctor by any means. At this point, I kind of took over the questioning. Dr. Sakamoto kept looking at his watch, as though he just wanted to move onto his next appointment, because it seemed more important to keep on time than anything.
