So thankful for Dr. Detch !! On New Years weekend, I fell and broke my left femur bone. My left hip had been replaced 30+ years ago, so I had to undergo a rather complicated hip "revision" surgery with all new hip parts. Dr. Detch has such direct presence and honesty I would like him to do my knee replacement surgeries when my pain indicates further treatment. I was under the mistaken impression that I had 3 torn meniscus, but I was misinformed. No soft tissue, no meniscus, no cartilage, just bone on bone arthritis. I recently received a full hip replacement via Dr Detch in Feb 2019. I suffered a car accident 40 years ago that dislocated my hip and left complications that in recent years have become very painful Dr Detch was highly recommended by my Primary Care Physician and with good reason. He is professional, courtesy and cautious. He did not rush to surgery and arranged a Cortisone shot to facilitate a vacation prior to an operation . Several months later , once quality of life issues demanded, he quickly scheduled surgery and then his excellent team swung into gear. You sense Dr Detch is demanding with his staff and hospital services and seems to get the very best. This means great organisation and support with excellent communication. Pre op was well informed and helpful, the actual operation went very smoothly and the Post Operation service was excellent. I walked the same day of surgery, spent two days as an in-patient, 3 days with a walker only and then used a cane for less than 6 weeeks. Within 2 months I was walking unaided for 3 miles a day. Dr Detch is an excellent surgeon , He is confident in his abilities ( which according to some reviewers may appear arrogance - I did not see this ) and although I am in no rush, I hope to secure his services for the other hip ! read more

I had my right hip replaced in September 2020 by Dr. Detch. Before surgery, my pain level was off the charts bad, and I could not walk without the aid of cane. I am so thankful for the care and support I received from Dr Detch and Mills Hospital. My hip replacement is strong, pain free and last week I got the all clear from Dr Detch go on with life as I was before my hip became a problem. When I was first diagnosed needing a hip replacement, I was extremely anxious about it as I have never spent a day in the hospital. Seemed like everything was going so fast in our consultation, and being my first time in that situation, I was extremely unsure of what was the best course of action. Dr. Detch saw that I was a little bit shaken by what was going on and to his credit, he slowed everything down for me, brought in a prosthetic model, and showed me exactly what was going to happen. Not only did my anxiety level immediately go down, but I felt like the doctor understood my fears, had my best interest in mind, and I developed a strong trust in him. Dr. Detch is serious and to the point, which I liked a lot. I believe he is a very skilled surgeon, and I have absolutely no reservation giving him my highest level of recommendation to anyone needing hip replacement surgery. I felt his team at Mills hospital was tremendous, including the after care and physical therapy teams. If you are in need of a hip replacement, I strongly suggest you call Dr Detch. I recommended him to a friend and he got a replacement a month or so after me and is doing fantastic. I saw Dr. Detch last week to arrange for surgery for a medial meniscus tear. He didn't want to schedule surgery and instead gave me a cortisone shot. Less than 24 hours later I was in extreme pain. I contacted him and arranged for a follow-up visit. I explained the shot had taken discomfort and turned it into full on pain. Again he refused to schedule surgery. I broke and dislocated my femur and hip in an accident and was at the mercy of whoever happened to be on call when I came into the emergency room. Thank goodness it was Robert Detch! He did an excellent job, was clear in his communication and follow up, and I have regained almost complete mobility and am pain free. I was able to overhear some of the procedure because unlike Dr Detch, the anaesiologist was not good, and what I heard was Dr Detch making sure everyone was absolutely precise and complete in their part of the procedure. I had a consultation with Dr. Detch 3 years ago for a injured hip and he recommended hip replacement from the x-rays he saw but I wanted to see if the hip could heal itself. I should have listened to him because I endured 3 years of pain and immobility after trying all different kinds of remedies. I went hiking with my wife recently and I had a hard time keeping up and I looked at my wife and said it is time to see Dr. Detch again. He took x-rays and said I was bone on bone this time. We both agreed it was time to do a hip replacement. The surgery was done at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, CA. Beautiful facility and a first class operation. The staff was professional and looked after every need. On the day of the surgery, Dr. Detch assured me that he will make me better. When they wheeled me into the OR, the anesthesiologist (Dr. Gray) told me that he was giving me something to make me calm. I said, "okay" and that is all I remember and waking up in the recovery room. The recovery room nurses were absolute angels! After recovery, I was moved to my private room and the staff there was great and made sure I was taken care of. The physical therapist came in and got me up to walk and move around. I stayed there one night to make sure my vitals were okay. Dr. Detch came in and said that my replacement surgery went very well and I was happy to hear that. I did more PT and was discharged that day. BTW, got several "get well" cards and such thoughtful touches from the nurses and staff! What was truly amazing was my surgery on Monday, discharged on Tuesday and on Wednesday, I was at my gym doing PT and playing ping pong. The members at the gym could not believe I undergone hip replacement surgery two days prior. Many of the nurses mentioned Dr. Detch was the best and now I know why. I went in today to have my staples removed and told Dr. Detch he did a phenomenal job on me! He had me walk and was impressed how well I had progressed and called over another doctor to show him my progress. I never used the walker (except in the hospital) or cane. Never had much pain, just stiffness. I have another evaluation in 4 weeks and if the x-rays are positive, I will be cleared to play hard. Those suffering from hip or knee pain, I would highly recommend Dr. Detch in a heartbeat. I know I stalled having hip replacement for years but if I know what I know now, I would have had it done years ago. My quality of life was shot because of the pain. In November, Dr. Detch successfully performed a total knee replacement on my right knee. The surgery was scheduled after several attempts to alleviate the increasing pain and stiffness with PT, cortisone shots and hyaluronic acid injections. I have recovered well, with great flexibility and strength. Dr. Detch and his staff were very professional and encouraging during the entire process. I had complete hip replacement surgery in August of 2020; it was bone on bone, and a lot of arthritis. I'm significantly overweight, also, so was worried about that. I was so happy after Dr. Detch did my hip replacement! My healing went without any complications at all, each week the hip felt better and better. Went to Dr. Detch a few years ago with hip and knee problems. Just had surgery to fix my hip labrum because it was detached, which caused bone spurs in my hip, chain issues to knee problems, and spinal issues. He told me to lose weight, and prescribed PT. PT only made it worse, because clearly there was a lot more to the story. He was argumentative and arrogant. He made me feel incredibly uncomfortable - to the point where I was gulping down and holding back tears. And frankly, had he taken me seriously, perhaps it wouldn't have taken so long for me to get my problem fixed. read more

I first saw Dr. Detch about 2 years ago after I suffered a bad fall when my foot got caught in a "Hole " at a car dealership and I sustained knee and hip injuries. At that time he felt that we needed to take care of my knee first so I had knee surgery, but shortly after that I started having major problems with my left hip. Six months later I was bone on bone and could hardly walk and the pain was unbearable. I saw Dr. Detch again and he suggested a hip replacement which was done 6 weeks ago. I belong to a hip replacement group on Facebook with over 3000 people on it and I was shocked at the young age of many of these hip recipients (30 - 50). I am older and I'm doing much better than many of these young people. At 2 weeks post surgery I was able to walk without any aid or pain and I was not having any of the problems that many of my peers in the hip group are having and I definitely attribute my great recovery to his skill as a surgeon. I have always found him to be very easy to talk to, he has answered my many questions with patience and respect and when I have emailed him with a question he has replied promptly.
