My son has been a student at Goshin Dojo for nearly 6 years and we have enjoyed watching him grow in so many ways under the tutelage of Sensei Frankie.
Two ends of the spectrum illustrate the range of experiences that we have had. As a new student, my son was overwhelmed by the rules of a game and got upset. Rather than giving him a hard time, Sensei gently suggested that he take a minute in the bathroom... then followed up after class with the reassurance that even he had been a new student once, but that everyone that stuck with it grew and developed and learned. Five and half years later, Sensei was still encouraging him, but also pushing him to do his very best as he tested for his second dan (2nd degree black belt.) My son has gone from unsure student to class leader and continues to grow and develop.
Sensei Frankie is the third generation from Gishin Funikoshi, founder of Shotokan Karate. There are many federations with different katas and belts, so if you are looking for a particular school, I would encourage you to chat with Sensei about the specifics of our federation. Students who transfer in from other schools are generally able to keep their rank - or an equivalent rank, but are required to learn the kata, kihon and terms used in Shotokan Karate and specifically at Goshin Dojo prior to being promoted into the Goshin Dojo belt system. This is to ensure consistency among those in the dojo.
Sensei balances discipline and high standards with compassion and individualizes expectations of his students. Prices are very competitive and Sensei does all that he can to make a karate education achievable for families. There are no added costs beyond monthly tuition.
