Goto is a true artist and master at what he does. My first appointment he spent the first 15-20 minutes asking questions, thinking, and listening because I wasn't quite sure what I wanted. He suggested a style that would work well with my hair and felt fit with my style and it was great. My hair continued to look great even as it grew out. When I came in the next time I was surprised that he remembered me and what he did last time. He has a great memory, very nice to chat with, and gives a great haircut. Yay! Finally got to my hair appointment and I'm happy with the cut and the experience. The salon is on a quiet block and easy to find- the frosted windows and black door- not the Salon on the right. I feel it was a pleasant total local East Village NYC experience. Goto was the only stylist there, in a spacious quiet space, with a calm little dog. Goto knew a lot of hair cutting tips and advice. Goto gave me one of the best haircuts of my life. I found him on Groupon, which as we all know can be very hit or miss. Hence, I had a ton of anxiety going into my appointment. I made my appointment through Yelp as I read that it was difficult to reach him via phone - communication was super easy and he sent me a confirmatory message the day before. His salon is beautiful and artfully arranged, and his ultra cute dog even hangs out there. But the haircut? Truly amazing. I have long hair so it's not like I expect to walk out of salons utterly transformed, but somehow I always end up a little disappointed over the layers and the hairdresser is always trying to upsell me on toner or "oil treatments," or trying to tack on hidden fees to the Groupon. None of that here. Goto listens carefully to what you want and most importantly adjusts things to your lifestyle. At his craft he is a true master, and reasonably priced to boot. Goto is the absolute best hairstylist I have ever gone to. I'm indecisive and change my hair often, but he gives great recommendations and has my full trust when changing styles. Plus, he quickly learned that I'm bad with maintenance but love a unique cut-- he catered to that perfectly. The salon has an industrial but cozy feel, complete with his mohawk-wearing Poodle. There are only 3 styling chairs and he often works alone during the week, expect to be the only client in the room. This is the best hairstylist I've ever been to. True artist and master of his craft. Don't waste your time going anywhere else, Goto knows what he's doing. The first time I ever visited him, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my hair, and he was very honest and told me my hair looked fine the way it was, instead of giving me a haircut I didn't need like other salons would do just to take my money. This time when I saw him again and knew what I wanted, he took his time and paid attention to small details to make sure I got exactly what I wanted, and he did it perfectly. I'm so happy I went to Goto. A real hidden gem of the East Village I've been in NYC for about 2 years now and have yet to find a hair salon that's given me that quality haircut without the high price tag. After doing thorough research on both Yelp and Groupon, I decided to trust the reviewers and give this place a chance. I'm glad to say, I was more than happy I did! The hair salon is not really what I expected at all--tucked away on a very quiet street in the East Village. I was his only customer, which was a surprise at first, but kinda made me feel special. Goto is the sweetest! He's really takes so much pride in what he does as a hair stylist and has been doing it for years and years. I appreciated the fact that he really listened to what I wanted in a hair cut. We had great conversations about his past life in Japan and how he's established himself in NYC over many many years. I got the worst haircut ever from this man and I never bothered to leave a review when I did! I'm not over the time when he butchered my hair, like my beautiful hair all on the ground. He also has very shaky hands from maybe a health condition but it doesn't help when he's close to my ears with his pointy scissors. I don't get all these great reviews but so so over rated. Wanted a blunt bob with a very clean line. I showed a picture of what I want, and explained i want the back slightly beveled. He run his fingers through my hair to look at the previous cut which was also a bob (done in feb). He did a wet cut, blew it out and check and fix the line of the bob. I am sure I was his last appointment of the day but he took his time to perfect the line. There was no flaw after he was done. He gave me a few tips to maintain it. The man has a lot of experience in doing what he does and he never gets bored of it. He takes his craft very seriously. Years of experience cutting hair in Tokyo before coming to NY in the nineties. Before cutting your hair, he'll get a sense of what's good (eg. knowing your profession to see how conservative the cut can be). Takes his time, looks at every detail. Gives great advice and recommendations - such as cutting your sides a certain way if you're growing a certain type of beard. I actually don't remember feeling as satisfied as I did after a hair cut at Goto. Grateful that he was able to fit me into his schedule on a busy Friday night. read more

GOTO is the guy! He got me the perfect comfortable hair style for me, I have been to many other Japanese stylist in the same neighborhood but never once I left the salon satisfying. But Goto did it for me!! I always had difficulty expressing how I want my hair cut done because i always wanted something simple but just right for me. I don't know where all the good reviews came from...I had absolutely THE WORST haircut I've had in the last 5 years maybe. The guy seems grumpy which is fine as I don't care much for customer service so long as he can do a decent job. But hell no, he has no skills either. He did take his time to ask me what I want along the process, but the end result is absolutely a disaster. I felt like he barely did much work at all with my hair and just fixed the length, blow-dried my hair and applied some product to my hair... All this for a whopping $105. With a service that charges for this price, I do expect it to be at least decent, but I am very disappointed to say this place sucks. Will not return. Best. I've. Ever. Had. In all aspects: 1. Booking: he somehow fit me into a cancelled spot 2 days after I first requested on yelp (needed to get in before an international trip). 2. Consultation: I get nervous in consultations because I never really know how to articulate what I want, so I tend to rush through it. Most stylists I've had just say ok and take me to shampoo bowl. Goto rather took some time to understand what I was asking for, asked questions, memorized where my part was and how I styled it (even though it was a mess when I got there) and actually discussed with me what I wanted vs. just telling me what he thought. It felt a little awkward at first but my mind was blown at the end when I realized how well he listened and took every detail into consideration. 3. Shampoo: wow. It's like he has 30 fingers. 4. Cut: every step of the way he checks to make sure length and angles are what you want. 5. Dry: super gentle and never rushed 6. Dry cut: actually took the time to tell me how and why he cut the way he did, based on my style (which he somehow NAILED after spending 30 mins with me) and what I wanted. He obviously has his own clear vision, and rather than just doing it his way he explains it to you and makes sure you're okay with the direction he's heading. I worked in a salon for years and I have stylist friends that normally give me major discounts or haircuts for free, but I would rather go here. Goto sat with me and spent up to 30 minutes just talking and getting a feel for the person I am and the kid of hair that person works, and what we could do it make the kind of hair I need for work. And a lot about what would look best. It is very important for him that you love your hair when he is through. He is also extremely proficient and a perfectionist. He can see things and details and fix them up like I have never seen before, and quickly. He is a one man show. He doesn't have assistants, inside it's nice and has a cool vibe inside. Last thing: Since he has no one else in the shop from the time you get there and begin to talk through the time he washes your hair he's making sure you get what you really want as well as ask questions along the way.
