Passed GMK while wandering around South Kensington one rainy morning...saw the banner or sign advertising best burger in London, and laughed to myself thinking "yea, a guy from Texas not buying this line"...but I was intrigued. Place is small, and has a cool Kensington urban look. Dropped back by few evenings later, ordered, and can only say WOW! Meat has amazing flavor and creatively prepared, bun fresh and also amazing, and the toppings were unique and...well...you know the drill, amazing! Onion rings were top notch, and the service was friendly and attentive. Seems that London can be a bit hit and miss when you stray from the standards...but GMK is a definite hit, and well worth searching out! This place was awesome! I rarely enjoy the food in London and walking around Earl's Court, my co-worker and I had a difficult time deciding if we were going to eat at GBK, but I'm really glad we did! The burger patty was awesome here. Very flavorful and cooked to perfection. The toppings were fresh and interesting. This is set up similar to a lot of the new wave of restaurants in the US where you order your food at a counter, get assigned a number, pick a seat, and then eventually someone brings out the food. The dining room isn't large, but seats a number of people and the decor is really clean, modern but warm. We camped there for awhile as we had arrived to London that night and were not yet used to the cold weather coming from Southern California. No one made us feel like we needed to leave, and the place did get quite full. A great burger if you're in the area. I'd certainly return. read more

This is a spot that is so cool to stop and eat. It also has a take away portion as well. It was a juicy burger and the sweet potato fries were crispy. It is order first and pay, and then sit down. Before my trip I'd already looked at some online menus and I liked Gourmet Burger Kitchen's one s on the last day of my trip I decided to have a go. After entering I was asked wether I'd been before and they explained that you had to go upto the bar for ordering. After looking at the menu I opted for a cheeseburger(got to choose between 3 types of cheese&got to shoose how I wanted my burger(well done), chips with garlicky mayo, onion-rings and a banana milkshake. I was free to then take some water and nuts whilst waiting for the food to arrive. The milkshake came pretty quick and it was delicious. But rather huge, whilst I was able to finish the lovely burger once it had arrived I left about half of the chips&onion rings. Was tempted to ask for a doggy bag but felt too embarrassed to do so. It's our last night in London and we've been all over this town and enjoyed a variety of delicious food. We decided to check this place out tonight and it did not disappoint! My husband had the classic cheeseburger and loved it, but I had the Californian veggie burger and it was OUTSTANDING. I do eat meat, but I love a good veggie burger now and then and this one is the best I've ever had. Such care and attention to detail with a perfect combination of flavors! Been here in the UK a few weeks. This was the 1st restaurant where the service was rude and the food was poor, I guess good luck ends at some point. The salad was nice, but the burger was brought out right after ordering (pre-made?) After pointing out that I had ordered a cold dish (starter salad) and a hot dish, could they have said it would all come out in 2 minutes? They said they do it that way (like McDonalds? pre-made?) I wolfed down my salad, which was lovely with my red wine (a bit skunky, but not too bad otherwise). By the time I finished the salad, the burger was rock hard. I asked again if they could fix this mistake. They said it wasn't a mistake and finally took it (without my permission) and threw it on the grill. It ended up as rubber texture, which was inedible unless you like super well done. Finally, I ate none of it and asked once again if they would fix it or remove it, the manager said no. I said, please take a bite and tell me it is good and I will happily pay. She wouldn't, in spite of my not eating it at all. Had the California burger which consists of avocado, fried black bean patty, cheddar, red onions, mayo, relish, lettuce on a brioche bun. It was probably one of the best veggie burgers I've had due to the the tasty fried black bean patty. It didn't taste too greasy and felt unexpectedly light. Along with that we shared a GBK salad and chunky fries. Both nice. The workers do well clearing out tables in a timely fashion for the next party and orders brought out promptly. We arrived right at dinner time and all tables were occupied so it did feel a bit tight. If I turned around I was uncomfortably close to our neighbors plate so when we left and I turned around to grab my purse hanging off my chair, I felt intrusively close. My god how much I liked this place. The burgers were just outstanding! So good. I also tried the veggie burgers and they were amazing as well. The one I tried was the California, and it didn't disappoint. It's was good, tasty and light at the same time. Loved it. They also serve really good onion rings, crispy and sweet. So so tasty. The place is kind of small and so are the tables, which makes me think that this place could use some restructuring to renovate the interiors. Once you are handed the menus you have to go at the counter and tell the waiter what you would like to order. I guess this could be kind of a bummers since you have to stand up and go to the counter every time you want to order something. Also everything must be paid in advance. Tasty, pricey burgers. We tried this place in the advice of an ex-pat living in the neighborhood. We were looking for a quick bite before our flight & were told the burgers here are huge and delicious so we stopped in. You go up to the counter, order your burger & beverage then choose your seat. I had a delicious bacon & avocado turkey burger. The burger was quite large and definately filling, the chips were pretty lame however. Decent burger chain. LA is one of America's premier burgertowns in the premier burgercountry. That said, I wasn't too disappointed with the quality here and theres one big reason why I've kept coming back. I got the 'cheese" which is just a cheeseburger. They have many more interesting options including the "Babaganoush"-Peter's secret recipe with mashed aubergines blended with tahini & spices and the "Kiwiburger"-beetroot, egg, pineapple, cheese, salad, mayonnaise & relish among others. The meat was nice, thick and of high quality. They cooked it just as I ordered it at medium. However there were two things that turned me off. The cheese was just not that flavorful, and what flavor it did had was quite peculiar. It was "aged cheddar" instead of american or sharp cheddar most american burgers come with. Secondly, the bun had all sorts of seeds and flavors on it that made it more like an "everything" bagel than a normal burger bun. The real reason why I really like this place is not that they have awesome burgers, but that they have a card for 40%(!) off all food for students. A great deal and a great reason why I will be heading here even though I miss the quality of In N' Out, The Apple Pan, Father's Office, The Library, Umami, the Habbit and others back in LA. read more

I had heard a lot of good things about this chain of quality burger places so I had to try it for myself. I have to say I am a bit mixed about the whole thing. The decor of the restaurant is fine - simple but modern. Service was good. Burgers looked very impressive.... But they just did not taste that special. The meat was a bit chewy; they dont ask you how you want it cooked - which I would have thought is a must for a quality burger. Chips were fine but nothing to rave home about. It was ok. Accidentally found this place when all of the pubs in the area stopped serving food at 10pm. We tried 2 of the 4 veggie burgers on the menu and they were some of the best we've ever had. The total meal came out to £14.90, a bit pricey. I would definitely come back again and recommended this place to others. ADDENDUM: I went to wash my hands in the restroom after the meal and I saw an employee come out of the toilet and leave the restroom without washing his hands. Everything at GBK was absolutely satisfactory the staff were pleasant, the cheese & bacon burger did all the things you'd expect a cheese & bacon burger to do, and at £9, the price was definitely surmountable. Nothing about the experience really stood out, though, and despite the wide selection, presentation and general attention to detail, our evening at the Gourmet Burger Kitchen was lacking a certain je ne sais quio. On the other hand, maybe that's needlessly negative because there was certainly nothing wrong with food, service, or decor. I wasn't sure what to expect of this place before going. I hadn't had many good burgers in the UK, and didn't expect a chain restaurant to change that. My group went largely because it was convenient and not crazy crowded on a Saturday night. There were three of us- one got the Don, one got the Mighty, and I got a plain Cheese, while we all shared an order of onion rings. I was already pleasantly surprised by the availability of American cheese before the food came. The onion rings were quite good, and all three of us were impressed by our burgers. Not only were they the best I'd had out of three months in England so far, it was one of the best burgers I'd ever had. However, while I'd ordered it medium-well, the burger was only done medium. After some indecision on my part (I'm not one for confrontation), I went to the front and asked them to cook the half-eaten burger a bit more. Instead of simply complying with my request, they gave me a new burger to replace the half-eaten one, had the manager apologize for the problem, and offered us a free drink as well.
