From our first discussion at our modest Lexington Hills house in Folsom about our back yard (and front yard, btw), my wife and I felt Randy's passion, knowledge, experience, and energy. It was like he was our long-lost friend, suggesting instant ideas, taking time to listen to us, and easily changing his approach with our input. In subsequent discussions that led to what his crew completed in about three weeks (from demo to final, including a fun trip to Green Acres to see what types of plants could be in our yard), Randy's blunt honesty and top quality coursed through every minute of every day that his crew worked on our yard. What began as our desire to touch up our lighting and irrigation systems for a few thousand turned into a near-complete tear-out and re-do for less than $23,000: three new irrigation lines from a relocated source and new timer; 10 spot lights with a new, relocated power source; 85 plants (we kept 2 mature palm trees and 2 other mature plants); and river rock with cedar bark covering all. Hire Randy Gove for your project! My wife and I selected Randy for our backyard renovation project here in El Dorado Hills. We are beyond thrilled with the results, and the project has completely transformed our home. About the Project Our project was a complete backyard renovation. Everything existing was removed to the dirt and the space regraded. Our goal was to transform an unfunctional space into a vibrant extension of our living space. The design involved new concrete; new shade structures with outdoor fans; installation of a fire pit; new outdoor kitchen; new ground lighting and irrigation; and new plantings. The design brought together the elements of water, fire, shade, and ground lighting. Why We Selected Randy We knew we had the right guy on day 1. We inquired with four local landscapers about our project. Randy responded same day, and hosted us on a project tour that evening to see some of his design work at his own home, and at a few reference projects in the community. So we scheduled a meeting with Randy to go over our project goals. Randy came back quickly with a design concept. We worked collaboratively with Randy to iterate the design to fit our budget and deliver our desired project elements. How Did It Go? Excellent! Every member of Randy's team was highly experienced, friendly, and attentive. They never failed to explain part of the job to me when I had questions. Your project is going to go through several phases, starting with design. Every phase leader on Randy's team was proactive, paid attention to detail, and went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The Gove Team is creative. Nothing ever goes 100% to plan. Our project didn't, and yours will not either. What you need is an expert who can creatively solve problems while staying within the structure of the design and budget. In our case, we had two situations involving water features that had to be implemented slightly differently than as designed. In both cases, Randy and his team came up with alternatives that actually made the final product better than designed. Running into issues is stressful; Randy and his team really took the stress out of it. Gove Landscape is reliable. They showed up when they said they would. They always did what they said they would do. Gove Landscape is responsive. We never had a problem communicating with Randy or his team. Texting Randy always resulted in a response or call back same day. Randy is a plant guru! While Randy directed and supervised all phases of the project, he laid out the plantings personally! And he obsessed over it. He laid every planting out for us, and then went back and changed things to enhance the visual effect. Then he made several mods after we had plants in the ground. Plantings were an area where we decided to extend our budget a bit, and we are glad we did. Ultimately, we used over 25 different species and 150 individual plantings. Our yard looks like a resort! Gove Landscape is Attentive: Randy's team pays attention to details. We noticed so many small details: How they did a little more on the existing sidewalk to tie to the new patio; how they arranged individual plantings; how they handled the down-spouts in the drainage system; how they cleverly positioned electrical outlets; how they meticulously detailed the countertops; how they arranged the rock for effect in the fire pit. From the design, through construction, to plant installation I could not ask for a more professional team. The final product is incredible. Randy Gove and "Plant Randy" spend an incredible amount of time with the client touring Green Acres Nursery and then selecting the plants which will coordinate and enhance the features of the property. This is the 5th home I have had professionally landscaped and is by far our favorite. Randy and Adam listened to what we wanted and then provided numerous options. Randy was also not afraid to tell us what would not work and why, so he provided guidance and education on plant material. You can tell how much Randy cares because the amount of time he spends selecting the plants, carefully placing each plant (which meant moving, changing, or just eliminating plants), and then studying his design before any plants are installed in the ground. It has to be perfect in Randy's vision and mind before the crew can move forward...in fact he came back the next morning before installation to change the color on a couple of the plants. I hate to pay someone to do jobs that I have always done myself. But people that care about me seem to believe that there are some jobs that an 82 year old should not be doing. Actually, in my prime I could not do the job that Gove Landscaping and Construction did In landscaping our front yard. It was overgrown with old, woody rosemary plants, and a variety of weeds that I was too tired to pull. The crew from Gove arrived and I witnessed a miracle happen in just a few days! A young man named Jake gave us excellent advice regarding plant choices. He spent time with us moving plants around on our newly manicured yard. Then Tim moved in and replaced the valves and the entire drip system so plants of different sizes would get the appropriate amount of water. As a final touch, they spread redwood chips that really made the plants pop. I cannot endorse Gove Landscape Construction strongly enough. Three years ago Randy Gove and his team did a magnificent job upgrading our front yard with some hardscape and landscape elements that have earned us compliments from our neighbors ever since, and have utterly beautified our home. We selected Gove Landscape Construction for our backyard, which had never been landscaped before, and was, in the words of my father-in-law "like the surface of the moon". Randy worked with my wife and me in lengthy design phase with a local landscape architect and was indispensable with his sage advice, striking the balance between beauty, efficiency, possibility and practicality. The design phase took a long time of multiple rounds with our landscape architect. I don't believe that we could have come up with an affordable, beautiful, complete and complimentary design if we hadn't had Randy's guidance throughout the process. His decades of experience came to bear as an advocate for us, even against ourselves, because he understood our underlying vision and how we could best achieve it. We ended up with a significant length of walls, decking, fencing, stairs, a sunken fire-pit and major grading of the garden. The plants we selected were almost all native or otherwise well adapted to El Dorado Hills' climate, and I'm confident that they'll flourish for years to come without needing to use Randy's one-year plant warranty too extensively. Once we got through the design phase, because of the closeness with which we'd worked with Randy, his bid was timely and efficient, and he didn't begrudge us shopping it against competitors. His bid was competitive and fell in the middle range (we were well into the six-figures for the major project), but it was the most comprehensive and properly line-itemized, which we appreciated. It was a very easy decision to stick with Randy for the build, although we did go to a deck company, at Randy's suggestion, for our deck. Randy assisted with the oversight and timing of that construction phase. Randy's team of employees and subcontractors were all A-grade professionals with deep knowledge and expertise in their various crafts. From ultra-precise Cowboy Ron, to botanist-extraordinary Randy Reid, to the tireless Tim, and everyone else on the Gove team, we were in the hands of master craftsmen who shared their opinions freely and with the comfort of knowing that they had a great boss who was going to listen to their ideas and suggestions. The whole team worked cleanly, and knowledgeably, explaining anything we asked and always keeping the backyard clean and as presentable as possible when doing major landscaping. Because of the time spent in the design phase, the implementation phase went smoothly and without significant changes and without cost overruns. It took about 5 months to finish the half-acre project, which was exactly the amount of time that Randy had forecast before we signed the contract. Throughout the entire time, Randy was extremely responsive and involved in the entire process, frequently dropping by the house to check in that everything was going exactly as it should, and correcting the few and minor instances where something wasn't up to his standards without us needing to complain or raise the issue. The result of his team's effort is a showstopper of a half-acre backyard that has stunned our friends and family since it was completed. I think I've already hinted at this, but let me be explicit: Randy Gove is not only a world-class landscaper, he is also, and is always, a world-class human being. I love the fact that our backyard was developed with and landscaped by someone who is local, who loves El Dorado Hills and is a pillar of the community. After many, many months of design and planning, we were introduced to Randy by our landscape designer. As originally planned, the project was well above our budget. Randy and the designer (Geoff Andrews) came over one evening, sat with my wife and I, and helped to find ways to make adjustments and cuts to the original scope to get the project within budget but also to where we would love the end result. We signed a contract that night and Randy got to work the following week. We were doing an entire backyard renovation including pouring all new concrete, removing changes in elevation, and adding an outdoor kitchen. Demo was FAST and if not for nonstop rain, we probably would have been done with the remodel sooner as well. Over the 6 months we worked with Randy, there were a few times where we discussed adjustments to our original plan that he felt incremental cost would drastically improve the quality of the end result and we are SO glad we listened to his advice. There were other times where he felt we had some unnecessary changes and where we could SAVE money. The whole experience working with Randy and Adam, from beginning to completion, was the best experience we have ever had and are so thankful we found them. Randy and his team did an excellent job with our landscape remodel. Unlike many other landscape services firms, Randy is a General Contractor. He helped us from the initial conceptualization stage by engaging HDH Design Group on our behalf to develop the landscape design (see separate review). He told us that when we were ready to bid the job, he would bid on it like any other contractor. We were so impressed with Randy's process and integrity that we didn't feel a need to obtain a bid from any other contractor - we just asked him to provide an estimate to do the work. His estimate was very fair and reasonable so we asked him to proceed. Randy's crew includes a Certified Arborist and a number of skilled individuals that did everything from preparing the site (removing trees, stumps and huge rocks), to installing the drip irrigation system and sensors, and planting ground cover, plants and trees. After the initial work was done, several of the plants appeared to be unhappy so we called Randy. He came to see us promptly and replaced the plants without a blink. He explained that his services include a 1 year warranty on the plants and all of the work, and that he would be back at least once every quarter to be sure that everything was doing well. In the meantime, we should feel free to call him if anything needed attention. We were delighted with Randy and his team's competence, diligence and integrity. We had an old redwood deck that was falling apart. The entire area was unusable. After meeting with numerous Landscapers/Contractors we found Gove Landscape. Randy Gove came in with Great ideas for Our back yard. He redid all of our drains (which were in bad shape). They constructed an Awesome moss rock retaining wall around my Redwood tree. Randy Gove is a very good salesman. But the execution fell short. We had a large job, 3 acres, but all went well with design. Then we started work. We did not realize until much later that the project needed much more attention to grading. We have had to go back and regrade some areas. The biggest problem is he kept pulling off the foreman of the projects to start other project. This left some very nice young men on their own to do things that should have had some guidance. All of our plants we planted wrong for for the clay soil. We have seen had the watering system and plants looked at by another landscaper. He is digging bigger holes to allow the the root system to expand before it hits the clay. Randy will be on time or even early to collect another check but other than that his attention to detail and his workers is non existent. Do use caution hiring this company. read more

We actually found Randy on Yelp. I called 3 contractors in addition to Randy, who didn't bother to come out to see the job. Randy came out within the week, then sat in his truck to draw his vision. We waited another few months and decided to add a driveway. Randy and his crew did an outstanding job! The entire front of our 63 year-old home looks like it's had a facelift. Ron and his guys gave us a beautiful stamped concrete driveway, followed by Randy's gorgeous landscaping. I'll admit I don't know much about plants, just wanted something easy care that could tolerate our hot Sacramento summers. Randy met me at the nursery to educate me on the best choices for our yard. I truly feel our home is the best looking one on our street. My only critique is that my husband and I are kind of visual "itemizers". With Randy, you don't get the price of each plant, so you don't really know what the exact total cost was, and we increased our plant budget at Randy's suggestion to give us a richer look. But maybe all contractors work this way, IDK. We also added metal fence posts and new faucet hardware which we wanted so it cost a little more at the end. I will also need to be vigilant in battling Bermuda grass which is inherent to our area and rock vs bark might have been easier but the beauty of the yard would have been lost to the few plants that can survive solid rock landscaping, and Randy will not compromise this point. The recent negative reviews by Chris B., Kevin K., and others are not surprising to me. We hired Gove Landscape Construction to create a design for our backyard landscape project (through Gove's designer, Jeff Middlebrook), and we considered hiring Gove for the actual work. After enduring an unsatisfactory process during the design phase, we quickly decided not to move forward with Gove. Summary: If you have concerns about the cost of your project, and/or if you have opinions about the types of plants and materials you want in your backyard, then Gove is not a good fit for you. Communication during the design phase was painful -- both Gove and Middlebrook were poor listeners, didn't respond to emails, ignored many of my design requirements, and were often uncooperative and evasive when I asked very clear questions. And despite the substantial cost of the design work, copies of the design were presented to me in black-and-white, which made the 'plant legend' almost impossible to read. What's more, several plants were included in the design that I never asked for or agreed upon. But one of my biggest concerns is that Gove's m.o. is too focused on sales pitches, and not focused enough on clear communication with the customer to understand what they need and what's affordable. Every business has a sales department, but the best businesses understand that good customer service is paramount -- and that means clear, honest communication with the customer. read more

Moving to a new home has a lot of responsibilities, one of which is creating a beautiful experience, a beautiful vision, inside and out. I interviewed 7+ different landscaping companies with Gove Landscape coming in via referral. It must have been fate, because I could not have been happier to have gone with such an amazing owner and team to handle our landscaping needs. Being so new to all of this, we had a lot of support from Randy to capture our vision and to have our entire backyard setup flow so wonderfully together. Gove Landscape Construction is the Best! Top notch all-in-one landscaping contractor. We hired a Landscape Architect to design a front yard patio seating area and landscaping for our home here in El Dorado Hills. First contractor we talked to, gave an estimate without coming to our home. Did not like that and our Architect, Bill Roach, recommended Gove. Randy Gove came out to our home that day. We were sold on his promise to deliver a beautiful job and he did! His team of hardscape and landscape workers were all on time and worked long hours to detail every part of the project, from drainage and irrigation to concrete and masonry to plants and sod.
