We went here for a wedding. It was a beautiful venue! The ceremony was held on the lawn at 4pm. Cocktail hour was outside in the patio. And dinner and dancing was in the dim all room. All the workers were friendly, helpful and hard working. The venue itself was beautiful! Decorations and ambiance was wonderful. Weather cooperated. People seemed happy with their food. I had their beef, while my friend had halibut. We both ate all our food! The women's bathroom was impressive! It had fabric hand towels along with a refreshing station: breath mints, hair spray, dry shampoo, panty liners, tampons, gentle face wipes, and slippers! It was awesome. All the girls were happy for the night! The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because there were several, not just one, issues with the sound system and the music during the ceremony. I don't know how much it cost, but because this is a private golf club, I have higher standards for making sure the audio was correct if it was my wedding. The person played the wrong song for the bride's walk down the aisle, they had to restart the bridesmaid song because it wasnt long enough, the officiant's lavalier microphone kept cutting out, and the hand held mic for the bride and groom to say their vows didn't even work so they had to use the officiant's lavalier. It might be my protective nature and wanting my friend (the bride) to have an amazing wedding. Overall it was great. read more

My wife and I had a blast at the UNC Ophthalmology holiday party held at the Governors Club in Chapel Hill earlier this month. Simply put, it was a great event with excellent and food, drink, and service provided by the club. There was a dance floor and DJ too. I hadn't heard of the Governors Club until we were invited to this event. I looked up the club online beforehand. The first comparison that came to mind for me is TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia (outside of Atlanta), just because I'm from Atlanta and I'm familiar with TPC Sugarloaf. Both are private, gated, country club communities with lots of big houses and 27 holes of golf. In the case of Governors Club, the course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. I thought it was impressive/interesting, but not too surprising, that Chapel Hill had a private neighborhood like this. It's something you expect to find in bigger metropolitan areas, but Chapel Hill and the Triangle do have affluent populations that can support a neighborhood of this scale. According to the club's website, this is the only private golf club community in the Triangle that is gated. There are over 900 homes. It's a big site. Doing a quick view of available homes, I saw a 3-bed, 3-bath, 3,600-square-foot home with a list price of $750,000 up to a 4-bed, 6-bath, 8,325-square-foot home with a list price of $2,785,000. Not your typical Triangle home prices. We visited at night, so I wasn't able to get a good look at the houses and golf course as we made the windy drive to the clubhouse. But from what I was able to see, the Governors Club neighborhood reminded me of what Lee Trevino once said about the Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Georgia -- words to the effect of, "Every house is a clubhouse." I don't think it was that pronounced here, but the thought did come to mind. There are other clubs with the name "Governors Club" or similar around the country. For example, in Acworth, Georgia, there's Governors Towne Club. The course there was designed by Wake Forest grad Curtis Strange, but I digress. *This* Governors Club was founded in 1988. Despite its age, the parts of the clubhouse that I saw looked up-to-date and in great condition. It's a sign of a healthy membership and perhaps a thriving club, in my opinion. I've been in my fair share of country club clubhouses over the past three decades. Some clubs have fared better than others since the Great Recession. Governors Club looks good. I guesstimate the party I attended had roughly 80+ guests. There were two parties going on the Saturday night of our visit, one on the first floor of the clubhouse and ours on the second floor. The room was beautiful, floor to ceiling. Just really nice and elegant - what you'd expect of a top-tier club. There was a bar, dinner buffet, carving station, and a dessert table. As mentioned in the first paragraph of this review, I thought the food, drink, and service was excellent. The buffet had Caesar salad, a variety of pastas (meat, seafood, vegetarian), and enchiladas. The carving station featured beef tenderloin. The desserts were a colorful assortment of mini, finger-food desserts, from small cheesecake bites to cones filled with delectable vanilla and chocolate frosting. I thought the chef(s) and staff did a wonderful job. The Christmas tree inside the front part of the clubhouse was gorgeous, as was the clubhouse in general. They did a terrific job with the look and decor here. It was classy, modern, and stylish. I'd love to return and play 18 sometime. read more

Came here for a business meeting/dinner as one of our colleagues lives in this very scenic neighborhood. Bar was nice. Had a titos dirty martini to kick off the night. Initially bartender said they had blue cheese stuffed olives, which got my hopes up high, turns out they don't. No biggie, dirty martini was still solid with regular olives. Moves over to the dining area. Ordered the special that night which was hanger steak. Had it done medium rare. Could be a tad bit rarer in my opinion with tiny bit more redness in the center. Despite that, very well cooked and outer portion had a nice crisp at certain parts. Asparagus and mashed potatoes were crunchy and soft, respectively. Order came with a wedge salad which is probably one of the best wedge salads I've had. Creamy ranch with crunchy iceberg lettuce. One decent sized bacon but it was a nice thickness and perfect crunch to it. Very good. Only gripe I had with the entire experience was the amount of time it took for the food to come out. It was not an immensely busy night by we were waiting at least 45 min for the food. Food was probably 4 stars maybe 4.5 stars, but the amount of wait is not really acceptable. In terms of dining, the club offers you two unique dining experiences. You can either go the formal route and sit in the main room (no denim) or have a more casual dining experience at the bar. You can't really go wrong with either! Sports enthusiast? Then this place is for you! You have plenty of activities to keep you busy ranging from tennis to golf. We moved to GC two years ago and have loved the community and the country club. It really feels like living at a resort. We have made many friends and enjoy the countless activities. We were nervous about moving into the community with young children, but it has been a great experience for all of us. read more

My initial feel when I entered the Governor's Club for a rehearsal dinner was one of extreme embarrassment. The invitation had said informal dress and Carolina BBQ, and not having seen the Club before I went in jeans. Thankfully I was not escorted off of the property and there were a couple others at the event who had the same interpretation as I did. Yelpers - do not wear jeans to this location, this is not a jeans "place". Having lived in the Carolinas for 8 years now I wouldn't class the meal as the best representation of Carolina BBQ, since the food was all a little dry. The service was attentive - my plate was cleared promptly and water glad was always full. The next day (and properly attired!) we returned for the main event, which was a beautiful outdoor wedding. The club has a gorgeous outdoor patio and I was thankful not to trek through grass in formal clothes. However the ambiance was diminished by what sounded like power washing adjacent to the ceremony. Thankfully it stopped before the bride appeared but it did distract from the lovely classic music playing leading up to the event. The cocktail hour immediately following featured plenty of delicious hors d'oeuvres. My personal favorite was the mini BLT - a crostini topped with bacon, tomato and basil. The cocktail hour ended up being closer to two, and after about half an hour my feet were strongly objecting to my heels. I subtly (or so I thought) slipped a foot out to stand on to relieve the pressure. Thankfully a waitress noticed and escorted our group to a bar set up in the back. Cushioned bar stools and a personal bartender (at least until other people figured out about the back area), definitely my kind of party! The dinner that followed was superb. There were several buffet stations, and I tried a little bit of everything. The best offering was the salmon en croute because the crust remained flaky despite being set out just before the speeches. The tenderloin was appropriately cooked to varying degrees so you could select your preferred temperature. The pasta station had two chefs continually whipping up their respective pastas so everything was fresh. The location was stunning, the food was good, and if I lived in the location I would consider this a fantastic place to host an event. read more

Place is beautiful, property is enormous! Felt a little unwelcome due to the cost of the housing but I was only there for a venue tour of the clubhouse for my upcoming wedding. Grounds of the clubhouse were beautiful, flexibility in choosing how you want stuff. It truly seemed customizable. What I didnt like was that I felt rushed and unwelcome during my tour, almost like I was a burden. Totally waste of a 40min drive. Disappointed in the level of professionalism. read more

Relocating to the area and had a chance to have a meal. Through the years, I have belonged to many clubs and dining quality has been all over the place. Governors Club created a great experience. Prior to the meal, we enjoyed a couple of drinks inside the casual room. Games were on TVs and the bartender was great to talk to and provided excellent service and cocktails. For dinner we had a filet and grilled salmon. Both were good quality cuts and grilled to expectation. The sides were fantastic. The steak had asparagus with the stalks shaved and a real nice seasoning and the risotto/spinach with the fish paired nicely. The wine selection by the glass was well thought out and had good quantity and variety. Service was spot on and we had a great meal in a wonderful setting. You would think all high end clubs could create an excellent dining experience but many are challenged to do so. It was nice to see one excel. read more

Attended a wedding and reception here. Beautiful venue. Hannah was very helpful, and Carolyn and Kira were fantastic. Delicious food. Guests should be informed beforehand that the bar is for members only because that caused some confusion, and the male bartender in there came across as pretty smug about non-members being in there, like we were supposed to know or like our money was no good. read more

We were at the club for a wedding and had a fantastic time. Everything was perfect from the atmosphere to the ceremony to the food. The views are terrific, the staff was helpful and we can't remember when we had attended a better event. The ambiance is terrific. From the time you enter the club grounds you are surrounded by beautiful homes, a gorgeous golf course and you have this expectation of a terrific time. The experience doesn't disappoint. I have NEVER experience a place not wanting someone's business. Contacted Governor's Club on Wedding Wire to receive additional information regarding pricing, which Lisa did email within the day. After reviewing what she sent, I was really interested so I emailed her back regarding couple questions, no response from her, sent her another follow up email, again no response. Finally sent a 3rd email and she contacted me via phone. I was really interested in having my wedding here, hence why i followed up 3 times with her. We made an appointment to view the venue. She gave me couple time frames and then after speaking with my fiance, the day we schedule didn't work as well as the other day she offered. So I called back right away, left a VOICEMAIL and sent an EMAIL to ask if we can choose the other date she mention since it worked better for us. NO RESPONSE . Other places I contacted went above and beyond to answer my questions within the same day. This is the worst customer service experience I encountered. Base from other people's review, she seems good. I guess Lisa just did not want my business. Really disappointing and surprising to see a place like this would provide such rude service and lack of professionalism. read more
