It's been our family tradition for generations. The turkeys are the best! Make a day of it as the area is rich in orchards and shore line too. Madison has one of the best book stores!

Gozzi's pastel-colored toms and hens are an 80 year old Connecticut tradition! (All dyes used are vegetable based and 100% natural.) I had such a fun time checking them out for the first time next year. I went inside their shop and also bought a pie! Lots of option- even a turkey pot pie. Gozzi's Turkey Farm provides award-winning, fresh turkeys and is a third generation, family-owned and run business that raises its turkeys right here in Guilford. In November, people come from miles around to visit these colorful turkeys out front that are quite a sight to see. Bring the kids- they will love it! Pro tip- don't miss the colorful turkeys- November 1- December 24, daily 8 AM- 5 PM. Give them a call if you want to place an order for pick up. Happy holidays, friends!

    Guilford Gozzi's White Turkey - 15 pounds

Gozzi's Turkey Farm is a live poultry farm that opened in Guilford, Connecticut in 1940. It was founded by brothers William and Bruno Gozzi. They originally raised about 50 turkeys and sold them only to neighbors and friends. Years later, William developed one of the first strains of white turkey on the East Coast: the Guilford Gozzi White. These turkeys are raised without chemicals or growth-enhancing hormones. This variety of turkey soon became famous for its thick breast and moist meat. At its peak in the 1970s, the farm sold more than 150,000 turkeys a year and shipped many overseas. By the 1980s however, large poultry suppliers like Swift and Perdue had put a lot of small farmers out of business and Gozzi's sales dropped nearly 80%. Just when William felt pressured to sell out, his grandsons Bill and Bob decided to take over the business and they saved the farm. Bill still runs things today and the farm sells about 15,000 turkeys a year for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. In addition to selling turkeys on site, Gozzi's also distributes to about 20 small markets around the state. A popular tradition at Gozzi's Farm is their famous 'Colored Turkeys'. Beginning in the 1950s, William's wife Martha began dying the feathers of some of the turkeys and displayed them in a pen outside the store. It became a Thanksgiving tradition for families to come and see the pastel-colored toms and hens. They are on display each year from November 1st until Christmas Day. I have been eating Gozzi's turkeys for as long as I can remember. They produce some of the meatiest, most flavorful turkeys that you will find in the state. My parents also used to take my brother and me to Gozzi's every year to see the colored turkeys. This is a tradition that I continue today with my own son. The brightly colored birds resemble giant feathered Easter eggs. If you live in Connecticut and you want a delicious Turkey for Thanksgiving, then make sure it's a Gozzi's Turkey!

My 4 Year old loved the turkeys. We drove a long way to support a CT Turkey Farmer...found out the turkey we bought for Thanksgiving dinner isn't even from CT. Won't be back. But...the colored turkeys were wicked cool.

This is the second year that we've bought a fresh turkey at Gozzi's. We love getting locally raised food. and a month or two ahead time to reserve our turkey. Each year, they seem to lose our reservation, but we always end up with the turkey we want. Each year it has been a great turkey. It is also wonderful fun to see the brightly colored live turkeys they have outside. If you pick up your Turkey on the day before Thankgiving, expect a long line, both in the parking lot and inside to get your turkey. The line moves quickly and it is fun to chat with others waiting for their turkey

So glad I decided to get our turkey from here for the Holiday this year! Definitely the best turkey I've ever had or made, and the best part is you are supporting local. Some folks said its expensive, but I have no problem paying 2.99/lb, it was worth it. Just call and order a few week ahead, and they'll have the bird read for you. Check out the colored birds running around the field! Kids love it.

Just look at this beautiful Gozzi's turkey!

Absolutely the best & juiciest turkey you'll buy & prepare at home! Have been going there for 30+ years! They only take cash or check for payment. As it happened, on one occasion I didn't have either with me. They trusted me to mail them a check! Really, in day & age?? I ended up going to the local bank ATM & promptly returned to pay. Great family owned business!

I'd read that a fresh turkey cooks faster than a previously frozen one, and this definitely turned out to be the case.

Initially the farm's main crop was strawberries, and thus the farm was named Strawberry Hollow Farm for their main crop and for the hollow that it sits in. Harvey's government work as a research wildlife biologist took him out of the country and away from his farm in June, the most important month for strawberries. By 1981, Harvey transitioned from growing strawberries to growing members of the pumpkin family, because the growing schedule for pumpkins matched his work schedule. When he retired in 2001, Harvey realized his dream to farm his land full time. In addition to farming crops, Strawberry Hollow Farm also has a small gift shop where they sell various crafts. My family and I recently visited Strawberry Hollow Farm for the first time. There are so many different varieties of pumpkins and other various gourds on display, and their mums were just breathtaking. My wife and I dressed our son like Linus from "Peanuts". There were several spots on the farm for us to stage a "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" photo shoot. In addition to jack-o-lantern pumpkins and sugar pumpkins, Harvey cultivates giant pumpkins that can weigh up to 300 pounds (the kind that you see at a County Fair). The craft shop was really cool too; lots of Autumn and Halloween decorations. In the winter months, everything is themed around Christmas decorations. We purchased a couple of sugar pumpkins to take with us. We enjoyed our time at Strawberry Hollow Farm and we plan on returning in the future.

Finally, I just had to taste one of their July specials, their own blueberry pie à la mode. You had the choice of blueberry or vanilla ice cream, and I needed blueberry. It had whipped cream and blueberry compote on top also. I enjoyed every bit. It was incredible. The large wedge of their own blueberry pie was excellent. I loved the flaky crust and there was a lot more blueberry filling than a lot of other pies. I had also been eyeing another flavor on their board, and what I ate was so good that I went back up to the window for a kid size cup cold brew pb chip. The cold brew flavor was strong but balanced, and it's rare that so many flavors work together in ice cream without one getting lost. I was really impressed this was one of those rare cases where everything shined and wowed, and it really was as good a flavor as I wanted it to be. I did not go inside the farm market. I just ordered at their ice cream window and ate at one of the outdoor tables. There were several of them, as well as a few benches, and it was a nice environment. The girl at the window was super friendly and helpful too. I loved my first experience. I can't wait to go, and actually hope to for another of this month's specials! Highly recommend a visit.

Lakeside farm also has a small farm with llamas, so it's a great place for the kids. As I walked in the farm store, I was greeted by the owner and she was very friendly and she talked about how they started making pizza on the farm. She stated that her husband had a pizza shop and he wanted to start making pizza at the farm. What a great idea!!! I ordered a small Vegetable pizza and the vegetables were straight from the garden. When my pizza came out, my pizza definitely didn't look like a small. It looked more liked a medium or a large pizza. There were definitely a big helping of toppings and the sauce tasted homemade ,and made with love. The only thing I would do differently is to cook the pizza a little longer to hold up to the toppings. There was so much toppings that the dough couldn't hold up. I had some leftover over pizza and heated up at home for my kids and I and I made the crust crispy, and boy this was some great pizza!! The customer service was great and I love to support farms. I would definitely be back again to try the Ice Cream and to buy some farm fresh products.
