I stopped with a friend who's local so we could check out the cool pastel turkeys. They were adorable. I know they used vegetable based dyes so as not to harm the birds. I ordered 2 11# turkeys and picked them up a few days later. For Thanksgiving I smoked one and roasted the other. They were both outstanding, some of the juiciest, tenderest turkeys I've ever cooked. Gozzi's Turkey Farm is a live poultry farm that opened in Guilford, Connecticut in 1940. It was founded by brothers William and Bruno Gozzi. They originally raised about 50 turkeys and sold them only to neighbors and friends. Years later, William developed one of the first strains of white turkey on the East Coast: the Guilford Gozzi White. These turkeys are raised without chemicals or growth-enhancing hormones. This variety of turkey soon became famous for its thick breast and moist meat. At its peak in the 1970s, the farm sold more than 150,000 turkeys a year and shipped many overseas. By the 1980s however, large poultry suppliers like Swift and Perdue had put a lot of small farmers out of business and Gozzi's sales dropped nearly 80%. Just when William felt pressured to sell out, his grandsons Bill and Bob decided to take over the business and they saved the farm. Bill still runs things today and the farm sells about 15,000 turkeys a year for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. In addition to selling turkeys on site, Gozzi's also distributes to about 20 small markets around the state. A popular tradition at Gozzi's Farm is their famous 'Colored Turkeys'. Beginning in the 1950s, William's wife Martha began dying the feathers of some of the turkeys and displayed them in a pen outside the store. It became a Thanksgiving tradition for families to come and see the pastel-colored toms and hens. They are on display each year from November 1st until Christmas Day. I have been eating Gozzi's turkeys for as long as I can remember. They produce some of the meatiest, most flavorful turkeys that you will find in the state. My parents also used to take my brother and me to Gozzi's every year to see the colored turkeys. This is a tradition that I continue today with my own son. Stopped here this weekend with my husband and our 11 month old son to check out the colored turkeys. Totally adorable. We went inside the store front and I guess I was hoping for more than just a counter and some t-shirts for sale. Would have been cool if it had more to sell, say a cold case with gravies or maybe pies from a local orchard, but maybe that's not their thing. There are many signs posted saying do not feed the turkeys, but yet there are always those oblivious parents who are talking to eat other, ignoring their children as they run around the turkey pen and find anything they can find and throw them at the turkeys.... read more

This is the second year that we've bought a fresh turkey at Gozzi's. We love getting locally raised food. and a month or two ahead time to reserve our turkey. Each year, they seem to lose our reservation, but we always end up with the turkey we want. Each year it has been a great turkey. It is also wonderful fun to see the brightly colored live turkeys they have outside. Fresh turkey from a turkey farm? Who ever guessed there would be so many people lined up to buy this stuff? I heard that some people actually order a month in advance to secure the freshest turkey around, for Thanksgiving. But I on the other hand, being the procrastinator that I am, found myself at Gozzi's one day before Thanksgiving, an hour until their closing, begging for a turkey. Yes, I practically got down to my hands and knees to get myself a turkey. And I came home with a smaller size turkey than I would've liked, but I can't complain. I will write how this turkey tastes later on, but for now I can only be grateful that Gozzi's gave me one of their last turkeys. My suggestion for you. If you are close enough to drive to this place, call in advance. Call at least a week in advance. I also need to rave about this place being child friendly. They have all different colored turkeys for children to feed. I thought pink, purple, green, and yellow turkeys were just in coloring books. But Gozzi's got them. Yep! I don't know what they feed these turkeys, but these turkeys are rainbow colored. See pictures for yourselves. And, I almost forgot! Bring your cash or a check. They do not accept credit cards, which is another story of mine to tell another time. **** The taste of roasted fresh turkey didn't impress me that much. It was grainer and meatier and had much less of that unpleasant "smell" of frozen turkey. Last Thanksgiving was my first year cooking for my husband's big extended family. We inherited the holiday from his aunt, so I had some big shoes to fill. I'd cooked whole turkeys from the grocery store before, but decided to order a fresh bird from Gozzi's for our family feast. I reserved a huge turkey and picked it up a couple of days before Thanksgiving. The farm was crowded, but they had an efficient system going and it didn't take long to pay for our turkey and get on our way. I'd read that a fresh turkey cooks faster than a previously frozen one, and this definitely turned out to be the case. I brined and prepped my turkey according to a video I watched from Alton Brown, even using a thermometer during cooking to make sure the turkey did not over cook. It was done much earlier than I expected, but I kept it warm and when it was time to slice into the bird, we could all see right away how juicy it was. My husband's uncle, the one whose wife had hosted Thanksgiving for decades, declared it to be the best turkey he'd ever tasted. With Thanksgiving approaching again, I am about to call Gozzi's to order a turkey for this year's dinner. I don't think I will ever buy a turkey from the grocery store again. read more

Well, it's post-Thanksgiving and I just want to say that the 23+ pounder we got from Gozzi's is probably the best bird we ever had. I stuffed it with apples, cooked it breast side up, did a salt and herb rub the day before and it came out really moist and flavorful. We picked our bird up on Tuesday and it was very easy. Turkeys they sell are not from Connecticut. We got a turkey that costs 40% more than the average supermarket. The turkey was very tough and very grizzly. We could only eat about half of the turkey and the rest of the meat was just too tough. I support Guilford Business and if Gozzi is going to have turkey's shipped in from outside Connecticut then they should at least consider finding a better source. We bought from them two years in a row and same experience both times. I would love to give them a better review but I hope they read this review and make the necessary changes. read more
