In that time, I've trained all over the country and experienced a wide range of schools--but Waza BJJ stands out in every way. The owner, Derek Damano, is the real deal. He earned his black belt in 2006 from world champion Casio Werneck, and it shows in every class he teaches. On top of that, Derek is a Division 1 wrestler and has placed at multiple world-level international BJJ competitions. He's an elite athlete with an unparalleled depth of knowledge in grappling, both gi and no-gi, and one of the most well-rounded instructors you'll ever meet. Waza is home to a strong team of high-level black belts, and every assistant instructor brings their own flavor of excellence. The kids program is flourishing--the coaches are amazing, and the kids absolutely love being there. The environment is welcoming, structured, and fun. Beyond the instruction, the vibe at Waza is something special. Derek himself is probably one of the coolest guys in Jiu-Jitsu--laid-back, calm, funny, and just genuinely great to be around. He sets the tone for the entire academy. The facility is gorgeous--huge mat space, multiple bathrooms and changing areas, a clean waiting area for families, a kids' zone, and even a small cardio corner with machines for a quick workouts. Whether you're brand new to Jiu-Jitsu, looking for an amazing program for your kids, or already a black belt looking to sharpen your game, Waza BJJ is one of the best places you'll ever train. I personally love this place.

If you are looking for a Jiu Jitsu gym for either yourself or your kids, this is the one you want…read more About 2 years ago, we decided to enroll our son and daughter into jiu jitsu. Our son tried multiple sports (basketball, baseball, soccer) but none of them seemed to catch on. Our daughter also tried soccer and gymnastics but only gymnastics stuck. We wanted to try jiu jitsu to see if they 1) enjoyed it and 2) to hopefully give them some skills to defend themselves should they ever need it. After doing it for about two years now, we have gained SO much more than we were expecting. Because of jiu jitsu, both kids have developed and learned so much. Their bodies have transformed from the physical activity to ones that have become leaner and stronger. They gained an appreciation for the sport because the coaches make it fun and interactive with a game at the beginning of every class. They have learned what its like to have setbacks like defeat and injuries and how to rebound from it. They have gained confidence in themselves from doing really difficult things that most don't do. The facilities are great. Its in a large shopping center so parking is never a problem. The gym mat area is fairly large so it is able to accommodate a fair amount of people. In addition, the coaches do a fantastic job of maintaining and cleaning (which is VERY important for a contact sport) to make sure that people stay sanitary and healthy. The best part about this gym are the coaches, Shawn and Shawn. They are both black belts that have competed and continue to train so they have a really good knowledge base. They create a really good gym culture that is about learning and supporting one another like teammates as opposed to adversaries. They break down each move step by step and actually have the patience to explain it again over and over when the students are struggling to perform the move. The focus is always about performing the right technique vs. just doing something unnatural for a short term win. For the students that participate in competitions, they take time out of their own personal schedules to show up and support. I can't say enough about both coaches and how much they have meant to my own family and the rest of the gym. I have enjoyed being part of this gym so much as a parent that I even started participating as a student! I will say that participating is much different from just being a spectator. If you can be humble enough to learn from those around you and from a ton of defeat, you will be rewarded with an enriching experience that will allow you to improve your physical attributes (e.g. strength / stamina), be challenged, and will allow you to learn a whole new world of information that you never even knew existed.

Both the coaches are friendly along with the community they have within the gym. At the end of class you'll feel encouraged and motivated to come back. The coaches--Jordon, Pren, and Billy--are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping everyone improve. Whether they're teaching energetic kids or grown adults who occasionally zone out, they always take the time to make sure everyone learns in a positive environment. One thing that really sets this gym apart is the sense of community. They regularly host BBQs on holidays and special occasions, and anyone who comes by for Friday night open mat is always welcome. I've honestly never trained at a gym that makes sure everyone gets fed after practice, but these guys never let us leave hungry. They also go the extra mile to make the gym comfortable, especially during the summer, with air conditioning and plenty of fans to keep the airflow going. I truly feel blessed to be part of this growing team and family. It's more than just a place to train--it's a community that genuinely cares about its members.

They all have different styles and are really patient. They explain the details behind every technique, and they never make anyone feel like being a beginner or not understanding something is a burden. I've been training for a pretty long time now, so it is refreshing to be around coaches who genuinely love the art and love sharing it without ego. This place is a whole family vibe. Having the option of a women's program is really nice too. Coach Katie is a seasoned brown belt competitor, and you can see it right away. Our 14-year-old and 10-year-old daughters both train, and watching them grow so quickly in the kids' program has been one of the coolest things to see as a dad. My 14-year-old will even come train with the adults too, which says a lot compared to some of the other gyms we've been to. We also bring our 3-year-old son, and the gym has this gated kids' area that is pretty legit. He's always having his own little party and is chillin while the rest of us are on the mats. It's a small thing, but it makes a huge difference for families with little ones who aren't quite ready to train yet. The talent and the culture here are authentic, which is really important to me. It feels like family, and for us, it is. If you're looking for a place to train, take an intro class. You'll see what I mean.

That's exactly what I found at Yemaso BJJ. From my very first email, Professor Marcos was incredibly responsive and took the time to explain how everything worked. Before I even stepped on the mats, I came in to observe a class. He introduced himself, welcomed me, and explained what I'd be watching. You could immediately tell how passionate he is about teaching and how much he cares about his students. Watching the class, I was impressed by how organized, structured, and well-run everything was. The academy was clean, the instruction was clear, and everyone--from the instructors to the students--was friendly and respectful. There was no ego, just a great atmosphere where people genuinely wanted to help each other improve. I signed up that same day, and now, three weeks later, I have zero regrets. Professor Marcos and all of the instructors have been incredibly patient, especially with someone starting from scratch. I've already made new friends, learned more than I expected, and genuinely look forward to every class. Whether you're looking to compete, learn self-defense, get in shape, or enroll your child in a positive environment, I can't recommend Yemaso BJJ enough. It has exceeded every expectation I had, and I can honestly see myself training here for years to come. If you're on the fence about where to train, do yourself a favor and give Yemaso BJJ a try. I think you'll quickly understand why so many people speak so highly of this academy.
