The culture is extremely welcoming and family oriented. All instructors, assistants, and students check their egos at the door and work toward the same objective, which fosters a cohesive and comfortable training environment. Coach Ed instructs the 5am class and provides thorough instruction for all levels while managing to keep things light with humorous analogies. The group varies from 10-20 people in the mornings so the instruction is more personalized unlike larger chain gyms that have 2-3 times the students training. A Truly Special Part of UFC GYM Kailua…read more I just wanted to take a moment to recognize Kavika, who works in the childcare at UFC GYM Kailua. This isn't about one specific interaction...it's about the way Kavika consistently shows up for the kids. Every time we come to the gym, he is so loving, caring, patient, and genuinely playful with them. He makes the childcare feel like a place where my kids are not just being watched, but are actually cared for and valued. My kids get excited to go to the gym because they get to see Kavika. They talk about him all the time! As a parent, there is no better feeling than knowing your children are with someone who genuinely enjoys being around them and makes them feel safe, happy, and welcomed. Kavika deserves to be recognized for the impact he has. The consistency, kindness, and positive energy he brings to the childcare absolutely does not go unnoticed. I reached out to Allan Lima and he immediately responded in a friendly and welcoming manner and invited me to train At his school during my visit. I was very pleased with my experience! Allan's Academy was most welcoming, respectful and professional and I had a great experience training. The school was not too big nor too small which led to great hands on and personal instruction. The training was hard and yet very technical. Allan himself in my opinion was a very gifted instructor, pointing out carefully technical details to the techniques which flowed in a logical and practical progression. The physical building was no frills yet more than adequate. If you live in Hawaii and looking for a great school to learn jiu jitsu at any level or are visiting and looking for a friendly and accommodating place to train I would highly recommend!

It's a place where anyone regardless of their experience level can come and train. It doesn't matter if you're looking to compete, get in shape, build confidence or learn self defense, you can do it all here. The owners actually teach a lot of the classes which is pretty rare. All of the coaches are knowledgeable and effective at teaching. They'll make sure you're doing the moves correctly. Aside from being a solid place to train there's plenty of parking, the schedule is accommodating, there's air conditioning, mats are nice, the inside is aesthetic, seating to watch and a bathroom. They tell me its because they like the students, drills, and instructors. Just happens that this academy has many students that are of very similar skill level and size which really helps with their training (especially my younger/small kid) using technique (vice overpowering with strength and size). I see that the instructors teach at a level higher than beginner for the Saturday class and explain/demonstrate/monitor in a way that kids will understand, give their attention, and execute. The class has ample time for drills and sparring. Many of the kids participate in lots of competitions big & small and for the ones that compete, a lot of them do really well.

Once in, and talking to the instructor He said they're trying new classes out, and currently his is donation based, (but I'm sure it could change in the future), and to bring your own mat/ blanket etc for a rejuvenating intro to breath on weds at 6pm for 45 minutes. I am Yoga Nidra certifies, and this very much so reminded me of that with breath work. However, we were consciously awake and checked up on constantly through the practice. An awesome experience for those that need to tune in to themselves and out of the world. Great for people visiting the island looking to relax on a deeper level, and for locals who need to get back in touch with their innermost. Strongly suggest! Chi Kung, Kung Fu, Tai Chi are just some of what are offered. They also host workshops on varied topics conducted by themselves, as well as other community members. Workshops such as "Heal Your Back & Neck Pain", "Building Better Balance" have provided me with tools for life. My back and neck are the most comfortable they have been in years. I started with Tai Chi and discovered so much else to learn. In addition to Chi Kung, I'm enjoying kettlebell and a variety of strength training. My flexibility has tremendously improved, too. At times, it's been challenging, but I enjoy learning new things and feeling well. The quality of teaching is very high here. Bruno is very patient, humble, and knowledgable beyond his years. He is an exceptional teacher and the reason for my first yelp review. I've learned more from him in one year than the 20 years I invested in gym memberships.This is not an exaggeration.
