What a great experience. I came across Grae Therapy when in the area with some time to kill and with a shoulder that's been bothering me and some neck and jaw tension from TMJ. Tim was relaxed and welcoming and took the time for a chat beforehand to really understand what my issues were. Before the massage he also gave me some tips on seating posture. The massage was amazing, Tim clearly knows what he's doing and intuitively found all the points of tension, it wasn't a deep tissue massage in the typical sense but he worked through a lot of the knots I had, as well as including some more functional stretches and movements at the end which was energizing at the end of the 60mins and loosened up my joints. The setting is comfortable and cosy, dark wood and relaxing. Since Tim's ALSO a DJ - there's a choice of music, I left it to him and the music was relaxing and a far cry from the musaq that plays in your average walk-in massage place in Chinatown! Tim is a gent, and a fascinating guy, was interesting to hear how he began in the business, he clearly knows what he's about and has a passion for it, but is also an entrepreneur, with a side hustle of hats and shoes and other branded gear. Tim is a choreographer of muscle and body tension release. Between being asked what kind of music I wanted to hear ( jazz classics), taking the time to listen to the causation of my discomfort, manual tension release & aromatherapy-- not to mention he was able to see me as an emergency-- it was stellar service all the way around. Yep, Yep, Yep, Tim G is the real deal! I can't recall how I found Grae Therapy, but was impressed with the reviews I read, the website and the overall brand. I saw Grae + co providing services at marathons to services @ NYFW, and that's just pretty dope work all around! Anyway, the day arrived back in Oct 2016 - (wow almost a year to date, didn't even realize that) when I made my 1st appointment due to some discomfort in my hip and neck. I needed more than the average spa in a sense. Spoke with Tim about my concerns and we ran through a few movements to better help him understand perhaps my source of discomfort. We spoke about breath/breathing and how to better expand these beautiful lungs that I have and get more bang for the buck LOL. After a quick chat, he got to work...right amount of stretches, and pressure and caring energy is what did it for me. After 60m, I felt better and w/o discomfort in my hip! I visited a few more times and the service is STILL AMAZING! I always leave feeling great mentally and physically. The studio is quaint and comfortable and have a good vibe about it. I've been dealing with back pain for a few months now. A good friend of mine recommended Tim. I'm usually about skeptical massage techniques outside of the ones I know from college athletics. The space was super relaxing and the purple aesthetic made me feel like I was royalty. He asks you questions about your mental and physical state and what you want then he uses his knowledge of the human body to figure out what your body wants. His style is unique, in that he works in an intentional manner that may not include typical massage methods. For example, a large component of his massage consists of your breathing. Mary at Grae Therapy not only has helped me with my athletic recovery, but has been invaluable in resolving my underlying nerve pain. After seeing a few other therapists and doctors who insisted I had carpal tunnel even though my symptoms were in both of my hands, Mary encouraged me to continue getting testing, which led to the discovery I actually was dealing with nerve pain originating from my neck, not my hands. Her commitment to figuring out what the best course of action for my body and pain has been exemplary especially in comparison to every other therapist I've seen who were more willing to dismiss my symptoms that didn't fit their analysis. Mary has an amazing talent for not only listening to people, but their bodies as well. She is constantly reassessing the best course of treatment for her clients. For me after trying a 90 minutes session once a week we decided to switch to two shorter one hour sessions, which has not only allowed me to continue my level of activity but also more use of my hands with significantly less pain. I had my first session this past Tuesday and I can't explain in words how wonderful my body still feels. I had some serious knots on my back that caused a lot of discomfort during work (I have a desk job from 9-5) and prevented me from reaching my full potential when I was Kickboxing in the studio. After a while I learned how to work about the discomfort/pain in my everyday activities. But after having them massaged broken down during my massage session, I can whole heartedly say that I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I can breathe better (due to being realigned during therapy), sit straight with no bothersome feeling and work out at almost 100%. I have been to Mary Cody at Grae and she is fantastic. I went for treatment for tennis elbow and "serious I can't move" back pain. I feel 150% better after 3 sessions.
