I'm a casual powerlifter and personal trainer of 7 years, and I got worked on by Michelle and Cameron at NK body philosophy. They were both great. I got myofacial release work done with Cameron, and he worked on areas around the upper body that were tight. He took time to work on my shoulders,chest, and core. He used trigger point techniques to really dig in those small crevices around the larger muscle to create a great release that was desperately needed. Michelle gave me a sports massage, focusing mainly on my back and trapezius muscle. She did a great job in focusing on the small areas around my back and trapezius for about 20 to 25 minutes. I let my eyes rest and let her work for that time, and the release was amazing when I was done. My experience overall with both Cameron and Michelle at NK was great. When I first came to Nicole I was pretty desperate. I had been experiencing right neck and shoulder pain that was interfering with my ability to work. Sitting down was out of the question, standing at a desk I could tolerate for a couple hours a day. Going to the theater with my wife (who works in the arts) was intolerable. Prior to seeing Nicole, I had tried a Feldenkrais practitioner, an acupuncturist and was considering paying $1000 for an online ergonomicist/personal trainer to design a set of exercises for me without the potential to interact with him in real time. I thought I had shoulder impingement and was convinced I would not fully rehabilitate my shoulder until I remodeled my acromion by hanging from a pull-up bar. Over the course of 6 months, seeing her once a week(ish) and doing her exercises 2-3x/week(ish), my posture dramatically improved, my pectoralis minor and anterior deltoid scar tissue was released and I developed enough strength to be able to do a full day of work again, even in poor ergonomic environments. I can also go out to the theater with my wife again. (Unfortunately I still have to exercise once a week, and ideally stretch a few more times than that.) I consider myself to be a difficult patient because I do not like to exercise and as a physician I tend to think I know what is best for myself. After being diagnosed with a genetic connective tissue disease, my PCP told me that the only treatment was exercise, specifically strength training. My disease causes me to have compromised tendons and ligaments, joint hypermobility, which makes me easily and repeatedly dislocate joints, and chronic pain. As an avid gym avoider, I didn't even know how to start, so my sister referred me to Nicole. Since I have limitations the average person does not have and needed training in a very different capacity, I was a little nervous at first. I shouldn't have been. I've been a client of Nicole Kung for 7 years. I have a very demanding career , where I sit at a computer most of the day and I hold all my stress in my shoulders and jaw. As a result, I used to suffer from constant headaches, TMJ and shoulder tension. Nicole came highly recommended from a friend who told me she specializes in TMJ with intra-oral massage. The massage began by massaging the inside of my mouth. She carefully applied gentle pressure, focusing on the swollen areas to relieve the tension. The appointment lasted approximately one hour. I already noticed some improvement. The next day, I noticed my mouth felt much more loose and relaxed, something I hadn't felt in a year. Nicole hired me to collaborate on some projects for her business and suggested I come in for a massage to get a real sense of what she does. As a former athlete and current running enthusiast with ongoing joint and muscle pain, it certainly didn't take much convincing. I was impressed that she was so committed to having me understand her work, but admittedly, I wondered what she thought would be so different that I had to come and experience it for myself in person. I've had countless massages of every type--from high-end spas to sports medicine at chiropractic offices, to the no-frills joints in Chinatown--and I can say unequivocally (and without bias) that Nicole's was the best massage I had ever received. Period. I knew within minutes that Nicole was not only a pro, but that she was onto something so different from anything I'd experienced before. There was something intuitive about what she was doing that SO impressed me. She knew exactly where to go, what to do, and how much pressure to apply in each area. It was kind of insane. She applied techniques I had never felt before--a rarity considering my history. I remember feeling this perfect balance of gentle pressure and stretching. I was so curious about what she was doing but was too relaxed to care, lol. I had never heard of Myofascial Release, but it was incredible. It was completely therapeutic in every sense of the word. I'm very picky when it comes to massages. Because of my joint pain, some massages will actually stimulate pain and cause frustration if the therapist doesn't get to the source in each area. I typically ask for as much pressure as possible to alleviate knots or trigger points, and most of the time, I'm directing the therapist where to go throughout the process. Not only did I not have to tell Nicole where to go or how much pressure to apply, but she also found problem areas I didn't even feel as a source of pain--that really surprised me! I finally understood why she felt it necessary for me to experience the practice first-hand. It was nothing I could understand fully from her description alone; I had to see for myself. I left feeling completely lighter, looser, and more hopeful than I had in years that alleviating my pain was a real possibility. Why? Because she gave me really helpful insights and information about my body. She provided stretching and posture suggestions I'm still using. As a writer, I'm spending hours per day at a computer. Nicole could tell what needed to be adjusted just from looking at how I sat in our assessment. She also introduced me to Epsom salt baths--a new staple in my health-care and relaxation regimen. I feel so fortunate to have found Nicole. As many other reviewers have said, her knowledge of the human body is impressive. She is also very attentive and can spot the smallest imbalances that are leading to injury or contributing to pain. I've been going to her for personal training and massage for several weeks now, and have already noticed impressive changes. I have a lot of chronic injuries--you could point to just about any area of my body, and it's either hurting, or overcompensating for an area that is. I have been through PT, and tried just about everything else out there--trigger point injections, prolotherapy, muscle relaxers, pain killers... PT had the most potential to work, in theory, but the requirements that insurance places on physical therapists makes it almost impossible for most people to recover. My therapist would try to help my back injury, but wasn't allowed to do work with any other parts of my body. NOBODY with a back injury has it as an isolated issue. With Nicole, we are able to do exercises for my whole body as well as release all the overly tight areas through massage. I believe that this is the only way I can make progress, and I have already seen postural improvements and felt a reduction in pain. Aside from her knowledge and skill, Nicole is also very kind and is SO hardworking. I can tell she spends a good deal of time in between any given client's training sessions, looking over notes, reviewing videos, and coming up with the very best course of action. I hope all of her other clients realize how hard she works, but based on her perfect reviews, I see I am not in the minority in finding her amazing! I have been a client of Nicole's for a while and I have to say she is the absolute best at what she does. She has extensive knowledge of the human body and musculoskeletal system. I've had lower back pain and upper leg pain for more than 4 years and no doctors could tell me what it was. I did MRIs scanners x-rays took muscle relaxing pills and the pain was still there without a clear diagnosis. I have suffered from migraines for over 20 years and have tried various types of treatments (acupuncture, cranial sacral massage, lidocaine injections, pain killers, muscle relaxers) to no avail.
