    Derby day party.

Have been eating here for years and it has always been good. But lately it's GREAT! New menu items, new staff, new events like bingo and entertainment, new building going up. Place is packed most nights, even Sunday now that the kitchen is open. And Sunday morning breakfast buffet is amazing!!! Only problem was parking, but owners bought the lot next door to expand parking. Keep up the great job!!!

Great food for a small town restaurant! I was surprised at the diversity of the menu. The place was clean and service was great. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was fairly priced.

Had to get a pic of the Cajun crawfish before we ate them all!

Service is very good. The food was ok. I ordered one of the daily specials and was not impressed. I've had better Mexican food elsewhere.

My wife and I were visiting my niece, and on our way out of town we came across a little BBQ spot…read morecalled Sugar and Smoke. It's a neat-looking place--nicely decorated, inviting, and full of that good smoky aroma that hits you as soon as you step inside. We were welcomed immediately, told to sit wherever we liked, and our waitress followed us over to take our drink orders right away. My wife ordered the meatloaf special, and while I teased her for choosing meatloaf at a BBQ joint, I ended up going with the Smoked Reuben. They brought her an entire meatloaf, along with green beans and mashed potatoes. I'm not exaggerating--this loaf easily could have fed three people. It was so good she nearly hurt herself trying to finish it. She almost made it through all the green beans, too, but I managed to snag the last one--and it was delicious. Then came my Reuben: a massive, five-layer monstrosity. I actually asked the waitress whether they made it that way just to impress me (since I had announced upfront that I'm a bit of a Reuben snob, lol) or if all their Reubens are like this. She swore they're all made exactly the same. You've got to see the photo. The marbled rye was sturdy and didn't collapse under the weight of two layers of thinly sliced smoked beef and a thick layer of juicy, tangy sauerkraut. I'm a kraut lover, so I really appreciated how generous they were. The house-made Thousand Island-style sauce tied everything together perfectly. In the nearly 17 years I've been posting on Urbanspoon, Zomato, and now Yelp, this Reuben easily sits in my top three--maybe even my #1. The smoky flavor made it unique, and I loved it. My only regret was not being able to finish this monster of a sandwich--it was delicious but messy, and I went through a handful of napkins. A lovely lady came out to ask how I liked the Reuben and introduced herself as one of the owners. (I apologize--I've forgotten her name!) My only suggestion would be to keep the meat thinly sliced--shaved would be even better--and maybe offer a half portion at a lower price. As it was, I could barely touch my perfectly cooked French fries. To top off the experience, my wife ordered the bread pudding. She has a "gold standard" bread pudding from years ago that she compares all others to, and she said this one was just as good, if not better, than her all-time favorite. I wish we had a Sugar and Smoke closer to home, because it would absolutely be a regular stop for us. It's so refreshing to find an establishment that cares this much about its food and its customers.

Interesting place. Definitely worth our stop passing through here. It's a barbecue smokehouse in…read moresomeone's actual house! They do a bustling business. The food is actually very good. They put together some really well crafted sandwiches that we felt to have been a reflection of the care of putting together each recipe. The fries were really good, nice, crispy, seasoned well and HOT! The Cole Slaw was excellent on the sandwiches, but as a stand alone side, not so great, just average. It's more than just casual. When we were there, and I assume this to be the usual, there were no non-disposable utensils or plates. The place is cramped, and only one table (2 two-seaters pushed together. Everything else were booths, and on the small side to accommodate the limited space no doubt. The kitchen is right at the tables, and the entire place is a bit (actually a lot) crowded. They do a bustling take out business though. That was evident. So I think that would be reflective of how good the food is. The reviewer who gave it one dollar sign to reflect price, failed us. Three of us, three sandwiches, two fries and one cole slaw, with three small fountain drinks, yet it was over $60. I cannot give my usual highly descriptive, wifey assisted review, but she's with me writing this. We've already left and I got no pictures! Just one of those days where you're in a rush.

My wife and I split half rack of ribs, 1/3 poind of brisket and pork, jalepeno cornbread, peach Bourbon baked beans, and brisket mac and cheese. This is going to sound silly especially on how good the brisket and pork were - but I enjoyed the beans more than anything else. These beans were sweet and spicy with peaches, Bourbon, and red pepper in them for a truly amazing experience. The brisket and pulled pork were elite as both were tender and juicy. The ribs started off great and fell off the bone but the end was a little too tough. Jalapeño cornbread was sticky, sweet, and had the kick you would expect. Brisket mac was cheese but the brisket seemed out of place to me. There are 6 sauces: Carolina Red (mild), Georgia Mustard, Perfect 9 BBQ (vinegar tomato base), Triple S (medium), Sweet Chili, and Hot Carolina Red. All sauces were fantastic! Based on my review, Carol Lou's serves up a 5-star experience but 2 things holds them back. 1. They charge you for sauce. They charge $1 for an extra 2 oz container of sauce. You only get one choice of sauce with your sandwiches or meat and you don't get any on the side if you choose for them to dump it on the meat. Carol Lou's sauces are not made of gold and it is ridiculous to charge for extra sauce. 2. Sweet tea was rurnt and that is a Southern Word for bad and awful. It tasted old and it had gone bad. Other than those 2 things, the food is excellent but if you are a sauce-aholic and sweet tea lover like me, be prepared.
