The paper menu didn't say anything about gluten free, unless I missed it. Our waiter did say anything pizza style can be put on the GF crust. There was very little in terms of leftovers. This was everyone's first time in and 3 of our 5 in the party live really close!! But we all said we would definitely return and definitely recommend to others!! Well to the establishment. Let's get this out of the way; I love this place so much that I hosted out-of-towners here, the night before my wedding. I've never had a bad pizza or salad here. Here's my review. Great restaurants offer food that you crave. Here's what I crave from Grampa's. 1. Gluten free crust. Face it, you'll have a hard time deciding which pizza to order, so rder an extra pizza so you can try the GF crust. 2. The cake. The cake. The cake. Save room. Or take it home. 3. Table for one? Grampa's has a very sweet, cozy bar if you're dining alone, with competent, friendly-enough (not overly friendly) staff. Final fun fact. This place used to be Grampa's Gun Shop. The guy who owned it kept rifles in stock, in an old chest freezer. He was a total character, and I think he'd be proud that his legendary gun shop is now a legendary place to enjoy a night out. Came here on a Friday night and was expecting to wait a long time but a table opened up and we got to sit outside. The pizza was really good. The outdoor seating was a little chilly but it was nice to be outside again after having to sit inside all Winter. The waitstaff was very attentive. They cut the pizza in squares just and FYI. Great, crispy, thin crust pizza. Unique topping and sauce combos. We had three pies at our table. Goomba, Basic, and Pinocchio. My pick was the Pinocchio with red sauce and sausage. Funny thing was I think I preferred the Goomba with white sauce and mushrooms. Dining room is non existent and eating outside in April with no heat lamps cost them a star. Wine selection was deep. Wow wow wow.... Found this place through yelp while looking for gluten free friendly places for my friends and I while visiting Madison. When I tell you this place was just perfect in every aspect. The inside was so cozy and cute, absolutely perfect for date night. They also have a couple tables outside for nice days. Also a huge, beautiful garden outback that they use for fresh ingredients. The best pizza by far was the bacon and Brussels sprouts. At first thought, I thought that it wouldn't go well together but the flavors complimented each other so well. Overall the food was good! The quality of the ingredients really came through and you could taste the freshness. 1. The roasted vegetables were delicious but I wish the aioli was more flavorful. The mushroom has chimichurri on them and it was the best bite. 2. The mushroom and goat cheese pate was yummy. It was different than meat pate and I liked it! I didn't really taste mushroom, mostly goat cheese but the bread was amazing. It has a nice crust but was still soft. 3. The pizza had a good flavor combo. I loved the thick cut bacon pieces but I wished there was more flavor. The pizza actually didn't have a base sauce so with was not as flavorful as I was hoping, and the toppings slid off. The crust was very thin and crunchy though! The server was so nice and gave some great recommendations. The owner actually held the door open and checked in at our table. I don't know who Grampa is, but he needs to learn how run a pizza place. Outdoor tables were comically small, price was high and my pizza tasted like a wet dog smells. Classic Pepperoni Pizza. $17.93. (Way too much for the quality) Tried this place because a review said it had crispy cheesy pizza. It was not very cheesy and it was definitely not crispy. It was only crispy on the outside, like they rushed making it and didn't cook it all the way through.I asked for a side of ranch to go with it when I ordered it. I was told when I picked it up (35 mins later) they didn't have ranch, no big deal. The pizza was not cut all the way through so I had to finish cutting it when I got home. I tried to eat some on the way home while it was fresh to get the full effect, it was really hard trying to tear it apart. It takes me 14 minutes to get home from there and it was cold by then. The customer service was good but the pizza was definitely disappointing. For that price and quality I wouldn't go back. read more

There's good pizza and then there's great pizza. Grampa's crushes great and goes to straight phenomenal! Not only is the place super chill, super comfortable but the food and service are second to none. Came here on a friend's suggestion and was floored. He said this was the second best pizza in Madison. This is a debatable fact because number one is oh so good too but two totally different styles of the good stuff. Either way I was in pizza heaven! We ordered two apps and three pies. The first app blew my mind. We had the dumplings which were in this rich broth with a nice smear of foie gras. The dumplings were a perfect way to start the meal. Four perfectly cooked dumplings that were tender juicy and full of flavor. I started to realize then and there Grampa's was not afraid to build flavor profiles wish the right spices and ingredients. Next up pizza 1, 2 and 3. The first was this week/months special. The sweet corn pizza. This was hands down my favorite despite its lack of protein. I was amazed and when I read it on the menu I knew we had to try it just because. No wrongs here only right! Pizza two and three were the staples of the house which would be the Pinocchio which was nice and spicy, literally some heat! The fennel sausage and chilies made it nom-nom good! Also had a milder but still packed with flavor and big chunks of bacon, Brassacare. This was another solid edition to our stellar line up of pies. Grampa's is a truly killer thin crust. It is crisp and holds up well for the selection of house favorites we had. I would come back again in a heartbeat and Madison overall always gets some love for the amazing food scene they supply. Located on Williamson street (a cool and trendy part of Madison) you will find Grandpa's pizzeria an homage to the recipe from the chef's grandpa (as well as the former Grandpas gun shop located on the site). There were 5 of us and we arrived a little before 6 on a Friday night in September (on a Football weekend) and were pleased to get seated right away without a wait. We were in a sort of back room (that actually fronts the sidewalk) that has 2 tables for 6. Server was very helpful in explaining the menu options and the clever pizzas all sounded great. We started with the charcuterie plate - featuring a bunch of cheese and some great bread. We ordered 4 of pizzas - three would have been enough. Head and shoulders the best one was the Pinocchio with a great balance of flavors. Of course you can create your own and the basic pepperoni was also well received. The only let down was that they only serve beer and wine - seems like the perfect place for some creative cocktails. Great pizza and something unique. definitely worth a visit. read more

Had to check Grampa's off the Madison bucket list! Came for a fun dinner with a friend after a long workday. We each got a glass of wine - Pinot nouveau for me and Pinot Grigio for my friend. Tasty wine to accompany the pizza and good conversation! We split the Barberini and Puerco pizzas. The Barberini was covered in a big layer of arugula. I could have used a little less, but it offered a nice complement to the rich cheese and honey. I think I preferred the puerco - tender pork and really good cheese. The crust is thin and cracker-like. I think I prefer a Neapolitan but it was still very nice. They topped off dinner with a couple complimentary shortbread cookies. Tasty! Delicious thin crust pizza with unique selection of toppings. This has become one of my top 3 favorite pizza places in Madison! My partner and I shared the 3 courses for $30 takeout special and it was the perfect amount for two (we probably could have stuffed ourselves with more pizza it was so good, but definitely didn't need it!). You get a selection of one of the small plates or salads, a pizza and dessert. We had the beet salad which was a perfect blend of red and golden beets and pea shoots. They ingeniously placed the dressing on the bottom of the to go container to prevent the salad from getting soggy! Pizza as to be expected was the true star. We got the goomba- SO good!! Plenty of mushrooms and that garlic cream sauce really pulled it together. The thin, crunchy crust was perfect. The sticky ginger cake was okay- cake was dry; didn't get the "sticky" part of the name. Whipped cream on top was good but couldn't taste any of the lemon flavor. We stopped here on a Friday night - we made a reservation online but still waited another 20 minutes before we were seated. For starters, we ordered mozzarella and shishito peppers. Although plated beautifully, the mozzarella plate was a bit bland, and the shishito peppers were over-charred (you could pick off the char on most sides of each pepper). We also ordered the puerco and brassacre - both were delicious thin crust pizzas. I want to give this place 5 stars, but I'm docking 1 for the service - our waters were only refilled once when we got our check, and during the meal when we ordered more drinks, our empty glasses were not cleared. I'm only mentioning this because the tables are small, especially with the pizzas, and we would've appreciated having more room/being looked after in this way. That being said, we still had a fantastic time and would come back to try more of their pizzas. read more

A1 service and food! Was visiting from out of state and found this place when looking for another, glad we did.

On nearly every platform, Grampa's is rated in the 4.5-5 out of 5 range. Because of this, I really wanted to go and was excited to give it a try. However, my wife and I left feeling very underwhelmed. So, I think a more appropriate score for Grampa's is truly in the 3-3.5 range. Using another popular rating system when it comes to pizza (if you know, you know), we gave the actual pizza a 5.8 out of 10. That's not to say the pizza was terrible, but we found it to be very over-hyped. It just lacked flavor in our eyes and is not worth returning for. That's really the only reason for a lower score compared to the common reviews you'll see. Outside of this though, the service was great and the ambiance was pretty cool too. I think the high reviews take the latter into consideration more when leaving a 5 star review. If you want a comfortable and trendy place to get some drinks or maybe one of their appetizers, I'm sure this place's higher ratings would make more sense to me. But, if you make it your full dinner plan and get pizza, I would just temper your expectations. In summary, not the worst, but certainly not the best. Really the definition of average pizza. read more

Bottom line : Excellent paper thin crust pizza. This was on our list of places to check out and after wandering the Willy Street Fair we stopped in for an early dinner. We got a table in this very small restaurant - I could see how it could be tough to get in most nights. Our waitress was delightful and very personable - she helped guide us through all of our questions. We split a beet salad which was very good especially with the interesting mustard sauce. The highlight was the pizza with the pork confit - super tasty and how we like the crust very thin. We will be running back to eat here again! read more

THIS IS THE BEST PIZZA ON MADISON. Sorry to all the other pizza joints. The crust is crunchy and thin, perfectly cooked every time. I love pizza that isn't super heavy on the cheese and they nailed it! The sauces are delicious. The toppings are incredible. They come served on a wood board which is unique, you will love it. The pork confit is literally one of my favorite appetizers of my lifetime, put some mustard on the bread, then pork and peppers. It's simply amazing. Compliments to the chef! You're awesome! They do a different infused water everyday with lemons, limes, cucumbers, grapefruit and combinations of them. It's so refreshing! I used to come here when it was Grandpas gun shop so it's really cool to me being here and seeing it transformed to one of my favorite places. There even a couple GUNS on the wall! They have outside seating that is very nice and inside is romantic and dim lit with candles on each table. Great places for dates! When I first walked into Grampa's I was surprised at how cozy and romantic the place is. It feels like you're eating dinner in a house that was converted into a restaurant. Enough about the ambiance, let's talk pizza. OH. MY. GOD. So thin, so good, so perfect. I can't remember the name of the pizza we got, but it had sausages which packed some heat. This is a really good thin crust pizza. Crust is thin, nicely cooked with a crisp but still holds up the rest of pizza well. We ordered the Barberini and really enjoyed the mix of peppers and honey. The ricotta and fresh watercress were a nice mixture of flavors as well. I could have done with fewer peppers as sometimes the spice masked over some of the other excellent flavors. One pizza was fairly satisfying for two people, but I'd probably recommend ordering an appetizer as well. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Cracker crunch thin crust! So good!!! Pizza was delish- crust was crunchy and think and so good. Toppings ratio was appropriate, and sauce had good flavor. Probably our new go to pizza. The pork confit was also delicious!!! Such good little open face sandwiches with the mustard and giardiniera on the fresh bread. Just delicious pork. Salad was also killer- dressing was delicious and toppings were fun and creative. Food 10/10. Drinks reasonably priced and the rose cider on tap hit the spot on a hot night. Service on the other hand... not good. Had to ask for silverware after apps came out. Had to ask again for napkins. Arm went reaching across the center of the table to fill up water glasses. Just slow all around and not attentive. The $30 take out special will probably be our choice in the future because we loved the food but not worth it almost service was so bad. The same people own the bar next door and we saw pizzas being walked over, so that could be the move to drink over there are order pizza. Don't let that be discouraging though! I came here with my expectations through the roof because of these raving yelp reviews and hearing it from people I know that live in the area.. I was a bit underwhelmed. The reason why it took me so long to try Grampa's is because the wait is always over an hour and we're always way too hungry to wait that long. Surprisingly, we went around 7PM last Friday and got seated immediately for two at the bar. The bartender was extremely attentive and quick to help us. We ordered the cheese board to start (along with some drinks). They had a variety of different cheeses along with candied pistachios (yum), honey, and bread. It was pretty satisfying and nice to have with a glass of wine while waiting for our pizza. We ordered the "Jabroni" pizza which is vegetarian. Maybe it's because I grew up in the Chicagoland area or visit NYC a lot... but the pizza was just average to me. The edges are always super crispy and kind of burnt, which I was not a fan of. I felt like every time I had an edge piece, I had that burnt taste in my mouth. One pizza was enough for the two of us, we ended up taking a decent amount of it home (most likely because we had the appetizer with it). It's a great atmosphere with a really nice staff--but because the pizza is the main attraction, I have to give it the average rating of 3 stars. read more

Hats off to Grampa and his outstanding pizzeria. One of my favorite restaurants to go that is located on Willy street. I've visited here about five times in the past year and half and always leave satisfied. My most recent visit was on Valentine's day. There was a prix fixe that patrons had the option of choosing. This menu featured some unique dishes that allowed Chef Gil Altschul to flex his culinary muscles and show customers what else his talents include. The Valentine's menu consisted of a bottle of wine, charcuterie board, butter poached lobster served on vanilla bean rissoto, a specialty pizza (the ones that are usually on the menu), and either ginger cake or chocolate mousse for desert. My girlfriend's tree nut allergy leaves us to always request no nuts on any dishes. Of course Grampa's pizza obliged to our request, but, they did something that really no other restaurant has done for us: they replaced some of the tree nut containing items with subsititues to ensure we still enjoyed full servings of food. This really was an unexpected, considerate, and generous gesture. The charcuterie board was well planned with a great mix of crunchy and soft textures, acidic and flat tastes, and rich and lean flavors. The rissoto was perfectly paired: the lobster offered a richness to a rissoto that was unqiuely flavored. I'd say that this is some of the best lobster I've ever had in Madison. Obviously the pizza is great, with a thin, crispy crust, many fresh flavors and bold meats. The dessert while not my personal favorite was really good as well. The service has always been top notch. Give Gramps a shot and prepare your socks to be blown off, figuratively, of course :). PS - They are environmentally considerate as well being a clean energy partner. If you peek in the backyard, you will see a garden where the fruits of talented green thumbs are apparent (maybe not much during the winter). read more
